Taiwan has rich historical background with a multifaceted culture as a melting pot of different cultures. These years, Tainan city is becoming the arts capital of taiwan. There are many artistic and skillful people in Tainan, but the studio art space for their own work and for "meet the artist" events is currently lacking in Tainan.

The purpose of this project is to create a space that people can gather, use as a meeting place, and also enjoy art performances and art exhibitions. It will be unlike traditional single-function spaces such as museums, theaters etc.

The Tainan Performing Art Center is a cultural crossroads for the people. The center will be a fusion of modern and traditional culture, and It is an "open place" that everyone can enjoy.

In order to capitalize on this, the performing arts center of Tainan will become the crown jewel. It will be the arts center for art lovers, whether they are creative artists, performers, or audiences. Moreover, the center will foster arts education, support arts commerce and employment, and improve the standard of living from the artistic perspective.

TAINAN CITYCulture Capital of TaiwanTainan is a City which has great historic atmosphere. It's in southern Taiwan. It is the fifth largest after New Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Taipei. It was formerly a provincial city. Tainan faces the Taiwan Strait in the west and south. Tainan's complex history of comebacks, redefinitions and renewals inspired its popular nickname "City of the Phoenix."

Tainan was initially established by the Dutch VOC as a ruling and trading base which called Fort Zeelandia during the period of Dutch rule on Taiwan. After Dutch colonists were defeated by Koxinga in 1661, Tainan was remained as the capital of the Tungning Kingdom until 1683 and afterwards the capital of Taiwan prefecture under the rule of Qing Dynasty until 1887, when the Qing Dynasty established Taipei as the new provincial capital. Tainan has been historically regarded as one of the oldest cities in Taiwan, and its former name, Tayouan, has been claimed to be the source of the name Taiwan.

It is also one of Taiwan's cultural capitals, for its rich folk cultures including the famous local snack food, extensively preserved Taoist rites and other living local traditions covering child birth to funeral. The city houses the first Confucian school–temple, built in 1665, the remains of the Eastern and Southern gates of the old city, and countless other historical monuments. Tainan claims more Buddhist and Taoist temples than any other city in Taiwan.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of TaiwanAccording to legend, Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China, a ritual dance of some 5,000 years ago. In 1973, choreographer Lin Hwai-min adopted this classical name for the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community: Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan.

Cloud Gate's rich repertoire has its roots in Asian myths, folklore, and aesthetics, but it brings to these age-old beliefs and stories a contemporary and universal perspective. The company is made up of two-dozen dancers whose training includes Tai Chi Tao Yin (an ancient form of Chi Kung), meditation, martial arts, Chinese Opera movement, modern dance, ballet, and calligraphy.

Cloud Gate has been on extensive overseas tours th roughout the continents of Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America, including engagements at New York's Next Wave Festival, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival, Lyon Biennale De La Danse, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Adelaide Festival, Berlin Festival, Sadler’s Wells Theatre and Barbican Centre in London, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Kennedy Center, and Internationales Tanzfest NRW directed by Pina Bausch.

Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural GroupEstablished since 1929, with 80 years of history in developing Ge Zai Xi (Taiwanese Opera) into a household name, not only does Ming Hwa Yuan represent the best of Taiwan’s creative cultural asset. Ming Hwa Yuan has also introduced, with great success, this art form to other parts of the world to the delight and surprise of these global audiences. A highlight in the field of performing arts, Ming Hwa Yuan boost 3 generations of immediate and extended family members who are directly involved in the production and performances.

Ming Hwa Yuan has expanded the envelope of Taiwan’s locally developed and honed theatre art form- Ge Zai Xi to new horizon. It is now a culmination of folk-arts, drama, poetry, music, dance, acrobatics, visual arts, movie, modern theatre technique and sometimes even the effect of Black Light Theatre and flying trapeze are employed. Stunning and colourful visual, rich musical scores and lighting effects, familiar gestures and body languages, all these translate to passionate and optimistic energy that are part and parcel of Ming Hwa Yuan performances, encapsulating the multitude of artistic imagination of Taiwanese people.

Performance Workshop Theatre TaiwanPerformance Workshop founded an experimental group, Off Performance Workshop, on June 9, 2000. Under the leadership of Lehe Chien-Chang and the help of Fu Hong-Tzeng and Chen Bor-Wei as well as PW, OFFPW produced a total of 26 productions. We made 112 performances, averaging 8 productions and 37 performances per year, achieving very remarkable results. The fundamental goal of OFFPW is to research and use experimental and creative methods to bring new elements into a play. With the turn of a new century, they hope to incorporate current events and trends into their plays making it more well rounded. As a result of the overwhelming pressures of informational media, the survival of traditional theater is in jeopardy. Therefore, they are asking a very should ask ourselves a very simple question: What is the difference between a play, a movie and television? As a group, they hope to gather all the talent and expertise in this field and together, to give birth to a new generation of theater.

A FUSION OF MODERN AND TRADITIONAL CULTURETRADITIONAL VS MODERN

By mixing traditional and contemporary, Eastern and Western, local and international, Taiwan's artists in both the visual and performing arts are exploring different approaches and developing their own unique styles. From the past to present, Taiwanese people have been connected by Traditional Festivals.

Tradition connects with culture, experience, art, history, peo-ple and performance. I wanted to express modern and simple atmosphere with the spirit of traditional culture by focusing on the Seven representative traditional festivals, the Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival, the Moon Festival, the Chinese Valentine's Day, the Ghost Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival.

I designed the space through the Taiwanese traditional elements – stories, material, color, style and patterns. It also vividly elaborates the manifestations and variations of the festival customs with lots of historical anecdotes, fairy tales, folktales as well. I will provide the theater, gift shop, restaurant, bar, media area, and library in this project.

The Tainan Performing Art Center will present and give Taiwanese activities to people. Furthermore, to letting people feel the Taiwanese spirit in this project. And provide more experiences for visitors through eating, living, watching, listening and reading, and visitors will obtain a many-sided experience and have a lot fun.

I w o u l d l i k e t o c r e a t e a e l e g a n t a n d simplificative atmosphere to display a warm moment on New Year's Eve. I use the chinese traditional colors of red and gold to represent a cheerful and noble feel.

The Chandelier which make from gold plate showing the elegant look and have a good meaning at the same time. It will be a center, a focus point. The round column will be added to keep a smooth look which all made by fiber glass.

It is the main entrance to TPAC, and the dramatic design is to have immediate impact and lasting impression to visitors. Chinese people also think red is a lucky color and bring on blessings.

Inspiration from the Incense Stick activity on New Year's EveOn New Year's Eve, families go to local temples, hours before the new year begins, to pray for a prosperous new year by lighting the first incense of the year, they believed it brings whole year bless.

At the center of the room is the reception counter. It's a place where to welcome the visitors with the feeling of respect and passion, so I design the counter in a Chinses coins shape to attract people’s interest and attention.

The theater ha l l car r ies out the main function of TPAC just l ike Chinese New Ye a r w a s a m o n g t h e m o s t i m p o r t a n t family occasions. And it is the source of our spiritual culture.

Inspiration from firecrackers, I applied the color of red, gold, black and orange to represent the happy, auspicious mood and the high-end quality. The back wall has lucky money patterns and has some lighting behind.

There are 1803 seats for big performances s u c h a s m u s i c a l s , O r c h e s t r a c o n c e r t , traditional opera, dance, etc.

Inspiration from Spring Festival Couplets and FirecrackersThis was a time for the chinese to congratulate each other and themselves on having passed through another year, a time to finish out the old, and celebrated with firecrackers to welcome in the new year.

GIFT SHOPLantern Festival Celebrating the Show

MAGGIE HAIN YANG #02651252 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN FALL 2011 DECEMBER 5 12:15 PM

In the gift shop, there are many regular displays. It offers a selection of modern and contemporary art books, as well as innovative design, objects and furniture, c o n t e m p o r a r y j e w e l r y a n d a p p a r e l , educational books, perfprmance DVD, stationery, and our exclusive line of TPAC signature products. Target audiences are artists, visitors, designer, children, scholars etc.

The space will lights the gift up. Inspired from a lantern festival, I used color range of the lanterns which reflects the light into all the colours of the dark night to lanterns : black, red, orange, yellow, white, to create an optical effect which depends on the location of the viewer.

Inspiration from the Lanterns On The SkyAccording to Chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate.

The restaurant is a fusion restaurant that you can enjoy various countries foods and serve delicious seasonal fare. Performers and businessmen, students and visitors can have lunch in the afternoon. In the evening, families can enjoy their dinner after the show in a pleasant atmosphere.

High ceilings are provided to created the elegant moon and cloud chandelier. I designed a separate room for some people who like more privacy. There is traffic in restaurant dining area, so the transparent wine shelves are used to separate these two parts.

The application of materials are modern materials such as glass, concrete and metals, but represent in the pattern and symbol of Chinese style, to provide a graceful environment. It also provides people a gathering place.

Inspiration from Goddess Of MoonThe moon festival is a time to celebrate the celestial light of the moon. During this annual holiday, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th moon, there are plenty of spectacular fireworks displays throughout the night. The festival is for lunar worship and moon watching.

When the full moon rises, f a m i l i e s g e t t o g e t h e r t o watch the full moon on the Moon Festival. So I designed the chandelier in a full moon a n d c l o u d s h a p e a t t h e center of the dining area to attract people’s interest and attention. It's a place to welcome the visitors with the feeling of the moon and the sky.

Once we take the stairs or the elevator to second f loor which is the bar. The bar I designed with the lighting and wave-shaped ceiling panels. The suspended wave ceiling panels that I used the shape as Magpie's winds and the color of sunset. It's made of special PVC material.

The counter area has large shelf that is made from panels that intermediate moulding painted in shiny purple red.

I used the verity of table seats, I believed that people would have their own favorite seat. I have seating arrangrment in four, six, eight chairs. This bar is a jazz café and a wine bar. It provides a relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail.

Inspiration from The Bridge Of MagpieAccording to Chinese folklore, when you look up in the sky on this day, you can see the Vega Star crossing the Milky Way to meet the Altair Star. Chinese believe that it is the weaver crossing the Heavenly River to meet the cowherd over the magpie bridge on this Valentine's Day.

Inspiration from the Ghost Month CeremoniesAbout the Ghost Month- This entire month is a period when it is believed that the spirits of the dead walk the earth. This is a long held Chinese Taoist belief, which has its roots with the birthday of the Chinese Guardian of Hell. On the Ghost month, colorful ceremonies to honor the ghosts are held in public places and in Taoist temples.
