\ WHAT THE ROY AL TOUR HAS DEMANDED OF THE QUEEN: THE HEAVY PROGRAMME CARRIED OUT On the evening of November 23 her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh left London Airport at the start of a six-month journey which has taken them round the world and to man y _ parts of the Commonwealth. 1 t is difficult for the ordinary individual to appreciate just what this tour has entailed

for the Queen in terms of official day-by-day engagements, and the strain it has imposed even on one trained from childhood to shoulder the heavy burdens of royalty with a smile. During the tour of New Zealand, which lasted 39 days, the Royal visitors travelled some 1300 miles by car, 7 20 miles by air, and

IN BERMUDA, JAMAICA, FIJI, TONGA, AND NEW ZEALAND SUPERIMPOSED ON A MAP OF THE ROUTE. 600 miles by train. ln Australia, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh travelled some 14,000 miles ; just under 10,000 of them by air, 2500 by road, 1000 by sea and 800 by train. ln addition to the demands made by travelling these huge distances, the Queen carried out literally hundreds of engagements, often in

exhausting heat. It is little wonder that the way in which the Queen always appeared smiling, cool and interested has won the admiration of people ail over the world. On the map on this and on the following pages, we show the sea and air routes followed by the Royal travellers and her Majesty's list of official engagements.
