6 LETS MAKE PIES
A Greek tradi-
tional custom.
Last Thursday we
made pies in our
schoo l . Ada s
grandmother with
the help of the
teachers and the students of D class made cheese pies, spinach pies and milk pies.
The pies were very delicious and we ate them the following day at the carnival
party.
CARNIVAL PARTY
Last Friday we had a
school carnival party.
Our classmates came to
school wearing fancy
carnival costumes. We
listened to music and
danced. While the
boys were playing
football the girls were dancing the Gaitanaki in the schoolyard. Then we ate sau-sages, souvlakia and the fantastic pies the students and teachers had made the
previous day. It was the funniest party and we enjoyed so much!

My school ...Page 2, little Argonauts, issue 2nd, Jan. Feb. 2013
My school is in Portaria and it is huge and very old. It was built in 1883 and it has been a school for 131
years. The name of my school is Nikolaos Tsopotos, because he was the man who gave his house to the
village to make it a school.
On the ground floor, there are three classrooms, a computer lab and a library. On the first floor there
are four classrooms, an Assembly Hall and a Maths and Science lab. There is a playground with a small
garden with herbs and big trees. There is a basketball court but there isn't a football field. There is a
statue of Nikolaos Tsopotos in the schoolyard. There is another small building. On the ground floor of
that building there is the dining room where we have lunch and the toilets. On the first floor there is the
teachers office, the headmaster's office and a small class with a projector.

Choco day ... Little Argonauts, 2nd issue, Jan. Feb. 2013, page 3
Choco-day was a very special day in our school. We
made chocolates, chocolate cakes and chocolate
mousse. All the classes were involved in the cooking
and tasting and nobody was bored. We melted choco-
late, caramelized hazelnuts, and used plums and wal-
nuts to make little chocolates. We also watched pres-
entations about the history of chocolate involving ge-
ography and culture. We also listened to songs about
chocolate and danced. We had a lot of fun. The fol-
lowing day students, teachers and parents were in-
vited to taste all the choco-delicacies made by the
little chefs. After going to church we cut the New
Year's Pie, we had soft drinks, we danced and played
in the school yard. These two days were fantastic.
Chocolate
Choco-
late is
a raw or processed food produced from the seed of the
tropical Theobroma cacao tree. Cacao has been cultivated
for at least three millennia in Mexico, Central America and
Northern South America. Chocolate played a special role in
both Maya and Aztec royal and religious events. The seeds
of the cacao tree have an intense bitter taste, and must be
fermented to develop the flavor. After fermentation, the
beans are dried, then cleaned, and then roasted, and the
shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. The nibs are then
ground to cocoa mass, pure chocolate in rough form. Much
of the chocolate consumed today is in the form of sweet
chocolate, combining cocoa solids, cocoa butter or other
fat, and sugar. Milk chocolate is sweet chocolate that addi-
tionally contains milk powder or condensed milk. White chocolate contains cocoa butter, sugar, and milk but
no cocoa solids. Chocolate has become one of the most popular food types and flavors in the world. Choco-
late chip cookies have become very common, and very popular, in most parts of Europe and North America.
Gifts of chocolate molded into different shapes have become traditional on certain holidays. Chocolate is
also used in cold and hot beverages, to produce chocolate milk and hot chocolate.

Liravlos
Last week all the classes of our school visited
Iolkos Primary School and we watched the
music event Liravlos. There was a presen-
tation of ancient Greek musical instru-
ments. We saw and listened to 40 dif-
ferent musical instruments which were
used by ancient Greeks. The two musi-
cians were father and son. The father
played the instruments and the son sang
a lot of ancient Greek songs. They
also showed us how to make musical
instruments using simple things such
as straw, bones and hose. We were
really impressed by what we saw and we would like to
watch it again. It was so interesting!
Prince Lemon and the beautiful Onion
On Monday 28th January A class with the m u s i c
teacher Miss Artemis played the music fairytale
Prince Lemon and the b e a u -
tiful Onion in
their class-
room. The
story, which was
written by George
Sakelarides, is a
big poem that can
be sung. So the lit-
tle students have
learned to sing their
roles. They brought clothes and accessories from their homes and they made up their faces. They en-
joyed themselves very much and had a lot of fun.

Students of E class take part in a very interesting project about the Train of Pelion. Mr Arvanitis was in-
vited by the teacher Miss A. Argyriou and the students to talk to them about the train. Mr. Arvanitis
showed them pictures of the train, of people who used to work for the railway, the passengers and the vil-
lages. He told them the history of the train and he pointed out how important it was for the transportation
and the development of the whole Pelion. It was the only means of transport 100 years ago. Then a discus-
sion followed and Mr Arvanitis answered to all the students questions. Finally he promised to accompany
the teacher and the students on a train trip to Milies.
Good morning Mr Arvanitis. What is your profession?
Well, good morning children. I used to be a hotel manager in the past and then I became a teacher in
order to help the tourism professionals. Tourists travel to other places to visit sights of histori-cal, religious, architectural and natural interest, meet other civilizations and customs and entertain
themselves. They have the need to sleep somewhere, eat, drink and be guided around. So there
must be people with knowledge and experience to serve the tourists. .
Why are you so interested in the
Train of Pelio?
Well, Im very interested in it, be-
cause this little train, that used
to connect Volos to Milies in Pelio,
is unique. There is no other train
like this in Greece. So there
must be an organization that in-
forms people how this train used
to work. I remind you this: medi-
cine was developed here in Pelio
by Centraure Herron since his
first student was Asklipeos. So
we can inform all visitors that
medicine started from here in
Pelio. Visitors can still travel
from Lehonia to Milies and enjoy
the nature and the view.
Thank you very much Mr Arvanitis
