William Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April 1564

in Stratford-upon-Avon, in England. He is widely re-

garded as the greatest writer in the English language. He

was a playwright, a poet and an actor. He wrote 37 plays

(17 comedies, 10 tragedies and 10 histories) .He also

wrote 154 sonnets. Some of his most famous plays

are: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Mackbeth, Romeo and

Juliet, Midsummer’s Night Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado about Nothing and The Taming of

the Shrew .His works have been translated into over 80 languages.

His father was a glove maker and they were not poor. His

lessons at school were Latin, grammar, arithmetic, astron-

omy, rhetoric, logic, geometry and music. He married Anne

Hathaway in 1582 and they had three children, two girls

and a boy who died when he was only eleven. W. Shake-

speare moved to London in 1587.During his career as an

actor and a playwright, he became rich and famous. He

founded the Globe Theatre in 1599. Theatres like the Globe could hold up to 2500 people, but as there

were no lights, shows were put on only during daylight hours. The stage of the Globe theatre was open on

three sides. The balcony above the stage was used by musicians who played during the performance.

    W. Shakespeare only came back to Stratford for the last five years of his life. He died on his birthday,

aged 52, in 1616 (400 years ago) and was buried in Holy Trinity church in Stratford.

Midsummer Night’s Dream: Midsummer Night's Dream, W. Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, was

written around 1594 or ’95. Taking place in mythical Athens and a magic

forest deals with the universal theme of love. It shows the adventures of four young people in love, a

group of amateur actors and their interaction with woodland fairies. Will love win in the end?

Shakespeare week at our school: The last week of March we “celebrated” William Shakespeare in our

school. All the classes of our school took part in this project. Our English

teacher Mrs. Zoe Louvari presented us W. Shakespeare:

his life, his plays and his theatre “The Globe”. We drama-

tized his play Midsummer Night’s Dream and we loved it.

We also watched the performance of Midsummer

Night’s Dream played by ΔΗΠΕΘΕ of Volos espe-

cially adapted for children. We think it is funny.

“Meeting” W. Shakespeare for the first time was an

interesting experience and we had a nice time.

“Paths to the Forestbook” is the environmental and cultural event that was organized in our school. It

lasted three days from Monday 21st March to Wednesday 23rd

    March.

“Puppet Show and puppet workshop”. The pupils of the C class,

their teacher Mrs. Veta and their drama teacher Mrs. Zoe pre-

sented the puppet play “The papers are recycled” to the pupils of A

and C classes. Then they made puppets using paper with the help of

the KDAP educators. They enjoyed it very much.

“The Poetry Fights Racism». The students of our school were in-

spired by Greek and foreign poets, they read poems against racism

    and drew pictures.

“The School of Colours”. The students, the teachers and the head-

master of our school decided to make our classrooms bright and colourful. So they started drawing on

the walls. Our classrooms are more beautiful and we like having lessons in them.

“Meeting W. Shakespeare and his Midsummer Night`s Dream». We became familiar with the great-

est English playwright and we dramatized the Midsummer Night`s Dream. We enjoyed it so much!

“Swallows travelling…” is the title of the workshop the students of C class and the Reception class took

part in. Mrs. Eleni Barboudaki invited them in the school library, which was turned into a “hat shop” for

that day. They read the book “The hats of Mrs. Stroubinsky” and talked about the diversity of people,

that we are unique and we have to accept each other. They made different hats for each pupil, they

dramatized the book and they said what makes each pupil of the group special and unique.

“The Eratosthenes Experiment” was organized by our headmaster Mr. H. Karagiannis and took place in

our school yard. The students of C and E classes took part in the experiment. We put a stick (1m long) in

the middle of our yard and at 12.26 pm we had to measure the shadow of that stick. Based on this we can

calculate the imaginary perimeter of the earth, which is 34.000 Km. It was an educational and exciting

    project.

A visit to the Folk Art and History Museum of Makrinitsa

The pupils of B class visited the Museum of Folk Art

and History in Makrinitsa on Monday 6th April. The Mu-

seum is housed in a tower. The pupils saw and admired

old traditional costumes, guns, furniture, photos and

woven textiles. They also saw a loom. The guide told

them about the everyday life of the people in the past, their customs and the difficulties they faced. It was a

    very interesting and educational visit.

L’arbre des poèmes – the tree of poems 21 mars:

    Journée mondiale de la poésie

    Journée mondiale contre le racisme
