Summer 2015 Summ When lile Gizmo stands on his hind legs and waves his paws to greet you, you would never guess what he has been through. Brought to the Charloesville- Albemarle SPCA (CASPCA) by local animal control, Gizmo was very fearful of people and found it hard to make a connection with anyone. Once in the shelter, our staff was unable to complete the full intake process as he was very unseled about being in this new environment. It was obvious that Gizmo had been roaming on his own for awhile – the lile guy’s coat was very rough and dirty and he was underweight. Gizmo stood in his kennel in the grooming room at the CASPCA and wasn’t aware of how his outlook on life was about to change forever. Once Dr. Scheller, the CASPCA’s Director of Veterinary Services, and the veterinary assistants were able to sedate him for examination, it became clear what was causing Gizmo’s uncertainty with people. Dr. Scheller examined his mouth and saw that his top teeth were completely separated from his upper jaw. Poor lile guy was in intense pain! Dr. Scheller, the vet who examined and performed Gizmo’s surgery, said, “I’d never seen a dental situation like this. I can’t imagine the pain Gizmo had endured. I’m so glad we were able to help him and give him a second chance at a beer life!” In addition to the dental issues, Dr. Scheller also noticed that Gizmo had an umbilical hernia, which she repaired as well. Gizmo recovered well from his surgery and spent the next few weeks recuperating in a CASPCA staff member’s office, where his true personality emerged. He became everyone’s favorite lile guy, and soon began to greet visitors with his friendly “two paws up” approach. Not long after he was fully recuperated and ready for adoption, Gizmo starred in the CASPCA’s weekly TV news spot, and before the staff member had goen back to the shelter from the TV station, the calls to adopt Gizmo started coming in. When Joyce and Otho Butler came in to meet Gizmo he waved his paws at them and they immediately knew that this was a perfect match. Joyce notes that, “Gizmo is the sweetest, most loving lile guy. We love him dearly and he thoroughly enjoys cuddling with us. He will do just about anything for a treat and we are so happy to have found him.” Gizmo is seling in with his new family and the Butlers couldn’t be happier. Two paws up for lile Gizmo! Earlier this year, the local non-profi t organization Light House Studio set its sights on creating public service an-nouncements (PSAs) for other local non-profi t organizations. The CASPCA was both honored and grateful to be chosen as the lucky winner! Headed by Program Director, Zoe Co-hen, and put together by 10 students between 8th and 12th grade, Light House Studio made two 30 second PSAs for our Operation Ruby Slipper initiative. Operation Ruby Slipper is

aimed at ensuring that lost pets can always fi nd their way back home and emphasizes the importance and value of microchipping.

Light House Studio teaches self-expression via fi lm-making to children from ages 8 to 18. There are nu-merous workshops throughout the year that enroll underserved children in the Charlott esville commu-nity. These workshops help develop valuable life skills, including interview tactics and team-building skills, as well as providing specialized hands-on knowledge of the technology involved in today’s digital fi lmmaking.

Elizabeth Culbertson was one of the students tasked with creating the PSAs for the CASPCA and she had nothing but praise for both the pro-cess and the CASPCA. “We chose the CASPCA because everyone in my group has an an-imal. A few students have lost pets and were reunited with them through the CASPCA,” said Culbertson. Operation Ruby Slipper is extremely important to Elizabeth as she says, “I have three older brothers who are signifi cantly older than me, and my CASPCA dog is a like a sister to me. We grew up together and if I ever lost her I’d be heartbroken. Everyone should microchip their pet!”

Both Cohen and Culbertson note that the CASPCA is a great place for anyone at any age! Culbertson adds that “animals can help people through a variety of things, including depression or loneliness, and animals bring a warm feeling and you can’t help but smile when you see one.”

Jamie Howard, the Creative Director at Payne, Ross & Associates, helped mentor the stu-dents at Light House Studio and was very enthusiastic about the project. He says, “ Light House is a unique opportunity to intersect one’s career with kids in the process of exploring

their fi rst interests and passions and gett ing hands on experience. My job was often to get them to that forum and help them agree on a simple idea. And once the framework was in place, they thrived on the options and avenues available to create from there.”

The Commercial Production workshop was support-ed by the Pymwymi Fund via the Charlott esville Area Community Foundation. To learn more about the CASPCA and Operation Ruby Slipper and to view the PSAs that were created visit our website at caspca.org.

The 2015 bow-WOW-walk, held on Saturday, May 30th, was a fantastic day of doggie fun. Over 400 par-ticipants and their dogs came out for the 2nd annual walk, raising more than $55,000 for the animals at the CASPCA. Dogs and their owners gathered in Lee Park before and after the walk along Charlottesville’s his-toric downtown, enjoying give-a-ways from generous animal-loving sponsors, doggie ice cream, a doggie pool park and so much more! The walk was led by our “Top Dog” fundraising team, Natural Pet Essentials, who raised an amazing $5,000 for homeless pets!!

We are greatly appreciative to all of our sponsors, ven-dors, volunteers, fundraisers and the hundreds of people and pets who rallied together to make this walk extraor-dinary! This was a huge success for the animals in need!

MEET GLENN RUST A lauded philanthropist, president and CEO of Virginia National Bank, pres-ident of the CASPCA Board of Directors, and a loving father, Glenn Rust is devoted to the Charlottesville community in many ways. This year, Glenn was honored with the Hovey S. Dabney award, an award that recognizes excellence in corporate citizenship. With Glenn at its helm, Virginia National Bank is an established and vital part of the greater Charlottesville community. Whether the event is a walk/run fundraiser, our very own Critter Ball or serving as a board member for organizations dedicated to community improvement, the Virginia National Bank family sets a high standard for civic engagement and truly em-bodies the spirit of giving back.

A supporter of the CASPCA for years, Glenn is most proud of our No Kill mis-sion and dedication to improving spay/neuter rates. His most meaningful expe-riences here at the shelter have included participating in and directing some of our fundraising projects, as he is proud to see significant community donations coming in, and knows that every cent will be put to good use. He also finds our dedication to animals with signif-icant medical and behavioral challenges to be particularly inspiring and worthy of recognition. In 2009, Glenn lent his considerable dancing skills to our annual Critter Ball after spending an hour a day, six days a week practicing his routine for the two months leading up to the Ball. He felt it went extremely well and he had a blast performing and helping to raise money for the CASPCA.

Glenn has been part of the Board of Directors since 2010 and says he is consistently impressed by the quality and talents of the staff and volunteers who work here. While serving on our finance committee, Glenn helped ensure that our financial resources were properly allocated and helped us raise the money needed to cover our expenses and fund crucial facility and policy improvements. Glenn also served as our facilities chair, working with numer-ous members of the organization to ensure we are able to meet our high standards of care by keeping the building in excellent working order and providing our staff with the tools they need to best serve the animals. In January of this year, Glenn was elected to serve as our Board President and we are thrilled to have his skillset and expertise guiding us into a future of community outreach and humane education as our mission expands.

As Board President, Glenn is looking forward to challenging us as an organization to become even better, partic-ularly through improvements to our facilities and equipment and also through improvements to our community outreach programs, including our low-cost spay/neuter initiative and our seasonal educational camps for school-aged children. He is particularly fond of our summer arts camp for underserved kids in our community and was amazed by the impact the program had last year when one of the camp participants brought in Camden, a stray cat that had been bullied and terrorized by other kids in his neighborhood. After his experience at the CASPCA’s summer arts camp, this student’s outlook changed and he realized what a difference he could make in the life of this innocent and vulnerable cat.

As an organization that takes in over 3,000 animals each year, Glenn recognizes the challenges we face and is passionate about helping us identify practical solutions that not only enable us to serve the animals but also bring us closer to the community as a resource during both difficult and joyful times.

RUMMAGE STORE UPDATE

MEET MIDGET!

MEET TYRA!

Hello! I am Midget, a little cat with a big heart! I came to the CASPCA from some unfortunate circumstances. In the past, I have been admitted as a stray, and later, I was adopted and returned because my owners were unable to care for me and treat my temporary illness. Well, I feel all better now, and I am ready to fi nd my new home! I just know I have a bright future ahead of me, and I am sure that any day my perfect person will walk through the front doors of the CASPCA. Is that perfect person you? I am a very beautiful cat, and oh-so-soft! I absolutely love to snuggle, and I plan on being the best friend to the lucky person who adopts me! I think I would make a great companion, so please come visit with me today!

Hi folks! I’m Tyra and I’m a sweet and outgoing dog who is looking for a new forever home. I came to the CASPCA from a diffi cult home situation, and the staff here have been overjoyed to have me in their care, but it’s now time for me to fi nd a new family! I am a people pleaser who loves attention, and is very curious about the world. I get a little too excited with cats, therefore I’ll need a home where there are none. I know the command ‘sit’, and will do it every time for treats! I also learn very quickly. I LOVE kids and am very gentle with them. My foster family says I am the “best dog ever!” Please come and spend some time with me, I am sure to warm your heart and home!

WE ARE IN NEED OF A HOME OF OUR OWN

Recently cited by VA Business Magazine as one of the best businesses to work for in 2015, Crutchfield has garnered praise for its positive, dog-friend-ly company culture. While Crutchfield has always been dog-friendly, the practice wasn’t formalized until about four years ago, when Bill Crutchfield asked his human resources department to craft a dog-friendly policy similar to Google’s, which states, “ We’re a dog company.” They have worked hard to strike a balance between being dog-friendly and people-friendly, with careful consideration given to employees who suffer from allergies.

On any given day, there are about 10 dogs at Crutchfield who have plenty of love to give, and there are treats to be found in just about every office. All of the dogs who come to Crutchfield get along well with each other and are

happy to share the space, and they’re of-ten invited to sit in on meetings! Crutch-field’s catalog and website frequently feature employees’ dogs, and the owners couldn’t be more proud. The dog-friend-ly company culture helps increase em-ployee retention, inspires lower rates of absenteeism, and reduces daily stress levels while also serving as a great way to strengthen employee relationships.

To those who are concerned that dogs may be a distraction in the workplace, Bill asserts that all employees become distracted by things throughout the day and there will always be some kind of distraction, but it doesn’t have to reduce productivity in the workplace. In fact, studies out of Virginia Com-monwealth University have shown that both productivity and creativity increase when employees take short, regular breaks, and dogs are a fantastic, natural way to remind us to step away from the desk.

Bill says that the CASPCA “is a wonderful organization which provides people with a very important dimension to life and owning a dog helps people with a better qual-ity of life. I am a huge believer in owning multiple dogs as they are pack animals and love to be together.” Bill’s favorite memory of the shelter is when he took his chil-dren to the CASPCA to adopt their first pet and saw the excitement in their faces. The Crutchfield family has been incredibly involved in the CASPCA’s development over the last several years, from donating TVs and entertain-ment systems, to sponsoring the annual Critter Ball and bow-WOW-walk. It’s important to Bill to give back to

the community and his goal is to set an example of good citizenship for future generations, and we at the CASPCA are incredibly grateful for the Crutchfield family’s compassion and generosity.

PET THERAPY TEAMSFor struggling readers, the chance to read with a CASPCA therapy dog or cat can have profound impacts on their education. Studies show that reading to an animal helps children focus better, improves literacy skills, provides a non-judgmen-tal environment and increases self-confidence. The CASPCA Pet Therapy Teams who participate in the “Paws to Read” program are dedicated vol-unteers who value the importance of giving back to the community to create a future generation of more compassionate pet owners and a strong community of pet advocates.

Cale Elementary School teacher Sue Harris says, “Pet therapy has been a motivating reason for my students to read at school. The kids practice their books often during the week to be ready for their time with the dogs. Pet therapy gives children an authentic reason to read!”

The CASPCA Pet Therapy Teams have completed over 200 therapy visits from January to April 2015, where they have visited local libraries, ele-mentary schools and nursing homes. To find out more about the program or to learn how to become an CASPCA Pet Therapy Team member, please contact Chelsea Mitchell at 434-964-3322 or [email protected].

Longtime Charlott esville resident Torey Todd has been a supporter of the CASPCA since its “chicken coop” days in the retired shelter facility and fondly remembers former Executive Director, Sally Mead, and all she did for the ani-mals, for the CASPCA and for the local community. Originally from Charlott e, North Carolina, Torey moved to Charlott esville to be closer to her parents and sister. Her father, John, worked for Frank Hicks and Sons while her mother, Helen, worked as a registered nurse and both were very supportive of their community, generously giving their time volunteering for causes that were dear to their hearts.

Torey’s furry family currently consists of cats Sumpter and Missy, siblings she adopted here at the CASPCA eight years ago, and her gelding horse Easy, from Easy’s Cajun Blaze line. She happily

recalls visiting the CASPCA regularly with her best friend to visit with the cats waiting for their fur-ever homes, and she has adopted all of her feline family members from the CASPCA over the years. Recently, Torey has begun planning for the future in a number of ways, including establishing a trust that provides instructions and funding for the continued care of her beloved pets should she pass away. She highly encourages all pet parents to make a plan for their furry family members in the event that they are no longer around to care for them, as it provides important protection for pets and peace of mind for pet parents.

After planning for her loved ones and pets, Torey turned her att ention to-wards the organizations with missions near and dear to her heart and the kind of legacy she hopes to leave behind. She chose to make the CASPCA a benefi ciary of her estate not only because of the work we do in the community, but also because of our stable and lengthy history. Established in 1914, the CASPCA has dedicated itself to sett ing the animal care and welfare standards, not only for the Commonwealth of Virginia, but for the nation. Torey strongly recommends that people consider leaving a portion of their estate to their favorite causes because “if we all did that, we would have an even bett er community in which to live.”

When asked how she would like the CASPCA to utilize her gift, Torey entrusted that decision to the Board of Directors who are serving when the time comes. A strong supporter of our No Kill mission and our spay/neuter program, Torey believes that the Board will know how best to serve the an-imals and the community with her donation. She fi nds a sense of peace and comfort knowing that her legacy now includes providing for her communi-ty’s most vulnerable and most lovable four-legged residents.
