All Smiles As Hebrew Day School begins its 54th school year, we are thankful that we are well into our 3rd generation of students. Most importantly, a recent survey shows that HDS graduates are strongly affiliated and connected to the Jewish communities in which they live, oftentimes holding positions of leadership. We are thankful to be addressing the most critical issue facing the future of American Jewish life – continuity of community and connection to Israel. May each family continue to grow from strength to strength.
Need a New Table? We Can Help.
On Monday, as part of the innovative Engineering units added to our Middle
School science program, our students will be challenged to build tables
strong enough to support the weight of several text books. Materials: one
piece of cardboard and 8 sheets of newspaper. In doing so they will learn,
hands on, how to brainstorm, test, revaluate, and redesign so as to make
their tables stronger and stronger. We are indebted to C.I.J.E. for their
investment in advancing the level of learning at Hebrew Day School. These
well designed units, guided by San Diego’s Science Teacher of the Year Matt
Bessler, are much needed for students who are too captivated by virtual
reality and need a good dose of reality, plain and simple.
Next time you are on an airplane with your children and the call goes out “Is
there an engineer on board?” make sure your child steps forward.

Parshat Ekev OVERVIEW: Parshat Eikev (Deut. 7:12 – 11:25)
If the Bnei Yisrael are careful to observe even those 'minor' mitzvos that are usually 'trampled' underfoot, Moshe promises them that they will be the most blessed of the nations of the Earth. Moshe tells Bnei Yisrael that they will conquer Eretz Canaan little by little, so that the land will not be overrun by wild animals in the hiatus before the Bnei Yisrael are able to organize and settle the whole land. After again warning the Bnei Yisrael to burn all carved idols of Canaanite gods, Moshe stresses that The Torah is indivisible and not open to partial observance. Moshe describes the Land of Israel as a land of wheat, barley, grapes, figs, and pomegranates, a land of oil-yielding olives and date-honey. Moshe cautions the Bnei Yisrael not to become haughty and think that what they will have in Eretz Yisrael is a result of their own powers or vigor; rather they must always remember that it was Hashem who gave them wealth and success. Nor did Hashem drive out the Canaanites because of the righteousness of the Bnei Yisrael, but rather because of the sins of the Canaanites; for the road from Sinai has been a catalogue of large and small sins and rebellions against Hashem and Moshe. Moshe details the events after Hashem spoke the Ten Commandments at Sinai, culminating in his bringing down the second set of Tablets on Yom Kippur. Aaron's passing is recorded together with the elevation of the Levites to minister to Hashem. Moshe points out that the 70 souls that went down into Egypt have now become like the stars of the heaven for abundance. After specifying the great virtues of the Land of Israel, Moshe speaks the second paragraph of the Shema, which conceptualizes reward for keeping the mitzvos and penalty for not keeping them. (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach International
DRASHA: The Torah reading of this week continues the long, final oration of Moshe to the Jewish people, as he prepares for his own mortal demise. It is important to note that throughout the words of Moshe here in the final book of the Chumash, there is, mixed together, the requirement of the memory of the past – the distant and immediate past – with the vision of the future, again the far future and the immediate future.
There are those amongst us who live pretty much in the memory of our long, eventful and holy past. Being suffused with nostalgia, they paint for themselves a picture that is many times more fantasy than reality. And since the reality of the past never is portrayed, any attempt to learn from that past is futile. We see so often in the words of Moshe how frank and honest is his recollection and recitation of the events of the past. He spares no one and no event. His love for the Jewish people, that shines forth from every verse and word of this book, in no way forces him to color the past and sanitize the events that occur. It is the honesty of his oration and presentation that gives it such power and eternity.
The person who has to climb a hill will oftentimes in the middle of the climb look back to see how much has already been accomplished. In order to continue the climb, psychologically that is an enormous aid. So too, on the eve of the entry of the Jewish people into the Land of Israel, Moshe reminds them of the past and of the climb that they already achieved and experienced – the travails of our ancestors, the slavery in Egypt, the
revelation at Sinai, the disasters of the desert – in order to prepare them for the rest of the climb before them.
But he also portrays the vision of their future in the Land of Israel and in the diaspora. There again Moshe is honest and candid with his words of prophecy. He promises no rose garden, nor an easy path towards the ultimate redemption and return of the Jewish people to their homeland, to their faith and ultimately to their Creator.
Just as Jews were and are prone to fantasize about our past, so too, perhaps even to a greater extent, are we susceptible to creating a picture of an unrealistic and unsustainable future. We see in the Talmud the opinion that promises us a rather bland messianic era. Maimonides adopts this viewpoint as well. However because of the length of the exile and of the enormous tragedies that have been our lot in that exile, many Jews have upped the ante for the messianic era.
By so doing, we are disappointed with what has already been achieved and make it more difficult than ever to have a realistic view of what our policies and expectations for the future should be. For a balanced picture of the holy vision regarding the Jewish people, past and present, one need only study and remember the final words of Moshe as they appear before us in the Torah readings of these weeks. Shabat Shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein. (C) 2016

Teacher Student Connection
As part of the Professional Development for our faculty
Rabbi Meir Cohen, our Assistant Head of School, led
workshops on how teachers can most effectively provide
feedback to their students, and teach students to monitor
their own progress whenever appropriate. Important
educational research shows that as teachers become more
expert in this area of communication, the students
‘reinvest’ in their own learning guided by a desire to reach
an appealing learning goal. As this school year unfolds you
can expect to see your child come home more personally
committed to succeeding at school based on their interest
in completing a well understood process of learning.
