Can you believe it’s November already? The warm, sunny days of fall didn’t do anything to help the leaves change color, but it sure helps our dispositions to hold off Old Man Winter for as long as we can!

We had a change of plans at the last minute for our Fall Tail-gate party. Due to a shortfall in the number of attendees, we moved the party from the airport to Slop’s. We changed the bags tournament to a Chamber Triathlon – bags, darts and pool – and had a great party that was attended by 60 Chamber members and several people at Slop’s who joined in the fun. Dave Meade, the winner of the triathlon, won a customized bags game from RK Graphics. Thanks to all who attended and congratulations to Dave!

With the city elections just a few days away, October was also the time for candidate forums. About 80 people attended the forum in Camanche, where 7 people are running for 3 council positions, and 2 people are running for the mayoral spot. In Clinton, about 20 people were in attendance at City Hall and others viewed the forum on TV from the comfort of their home. Three people are running for two at-large positions, two people are running for the 3rd ward position, and one person is running unopposed for 1st ward. Be sure to exercise your right and privilege to vote in the elections on November 7th!

Just a reminder that November 8th is the date of our first PM Presentation. The November speaker, Andy Sokolovich, will be presenting on Generational Differences in the Workplace. This fast-paced program takes place at Ashford Building 2 off the Mill Creek Expressway at 5:30 pm November 8th. There will be beer, wine, soft drinks and hors‘d oeuvres available through-out the 2 hour presentation. Members will pay $20 per attendee for up to 5 attendees and $15 per attendee for 6 or more. Not-yet-members are welcome and encouraged to come. Cost will be $25 per person. Please make sure you’re registered as you won’t want to have missed this! Call the Chamber at 563-242-5702 or visit our website at www.clintonia.com to pre-register. We want to make sure there’s enough to eat and drink and a chair for everybody, so get that RSVP sent!

Planning for Grow Clinton County Day in Des Moines next January has begun. Our Member Engagement Coordinator search is underway, a January social event is in the planning stages, and work continues on all the day-to-day things that contribute to our success. Life is good at the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce!

Until next month, don’t forget to Celebrate Clinton! Passion. Pride. Positivity.

Maureen

Symphony of Lights is Clinton Iowa's Holiday Festival.

Visitors to the festival will enjoy the viewing of over 40 lighted displays, 500,000+ supporting lights, castles, streams and a gingerbread lodge that fill a 1.1 mile loop of Eagle Point Park located off of highway 67 North. Its beauty and splendor will take you back to those holiday memories of your childhood.

The Symphony of Lights was brought to Clinton, Iowa in November 1996 by two non-profit organizations, Clinton Jaycee Foundation and Clinton Symphony Orchestra. These organizations founded the event as a fundraiser, but quickly learned it was much more. The Symphony of Lights brought a sense of pride to the community that had been lacking for a long time. It awakened volunteerism in all ages. Since its inception the number of volunteers has grown tremendously. It is estimated that the number involved reaches over 400.

During its 6th year the Clinton Jaycee Foundation became the sole organizer of the Symphony of Light. This change occurred due to reorganization and a change in focus of the Clinton Symphony Orchestra. All Proceeds go to enhance and continue the Symphony of Lights, fund the programs of the Clinton Jaycee Foundation and make improvements and upgrades within Eagle Point Park.

Come out and enjoy, first night for viewing the lighting displays will begin November 23rd from 6:00 PM – 9:00PM. Symphony of Lights will be on display until December 30th 2017.

United Way Campaign Chair Fall 2017 Message

The United Way of Clinton County, Iowa has kicked off the fall 2017 cam-paign! Our goal is to raise $650,000 for the partner agencies in our county to aid in the fight for the education, health/wellness, and financial stability of every person in Clinton County. We fight for every resident to have a job that supports a family throughout a lifetime. Over one- third of our community is living in poverty or one paycheck away from falling into poverty. These hard working individuals and families are unable to afford basic living expenses every month. When an emergency occurs, these families have to choose between food, shelter, and medication. Our community goal is to increase the number of low-income individuals and families that move into self-sufficiency. Local contributions help keep families stable, safe, and secure. United Way of Clinton County, Iowa addresses the most pressing local human care needs by funding agencies that give a hand up! When you donate to United Way of Clinton County, Iowa, 99% of funds stay local. The needs here are ongoing; friends and neighbors need the support every year. You may give to help those affected by the recent natural disasters as an extra gift this year, but remember to Give Where You Live every year.

Make the United Way the charity of choice in Clinton County! United we fight. United we win. -Justin Shaffer, Campaign Chair Fall 2017

Ascentra Credit Union Foundation Provides Grant

A loud roar of excitement filled the River Center in Davenport as roughly 900 students from grades 3 to 6 cheered in preparation for a day of en-gaging conversations with authors at the 2017 David R. Collins Children’s Literature Festival on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Students were treated to presentations from best-selling author Bruce Coville and internationally acclaimed author of children’s nonfiction, Kelly Milner Halls. Other presenters included Gary Metivier, Belinda Holbrook, Ryan Collins, Mary Meinking Chambers, B.J. Swartz and Connie Heckert. The Ascentra Credit Union Foundation provided a $5,000 grant which helped make this a free event for all students in attendance. Each classroom that attended also received a bag of books for their library or classroom. “Whether it’s through partnerships with area libraries on reading programs or giving out scholarships to our members, we are big supporters of read-ing and education initiatives that help uplift our young people,” said Dale Owen, Ascentra President and CEO. “This is such a wonderful festival that aligns itself nicely with our foundation’s mission, but most importantly it encourages our future leaders to be creative.” This is the second year Ascentra Credit Union Foundation has provided a grant to the festival, committing a total of $10,000 to this annual event. For more information about the mission of the foundation visit ascentra.org/foundation.

Ascentra Offers $10,000 in Scholarships

Paying for college or trade school usually means taking on large amounts of student loan debt. To help, the Ascentra Credit Union Scholarship Com-petition is providing opportunities for members to offset the ever-increas-ing cost of higher education. This year’s competition is now underway with a total of $10,000 in schol-arships available to Ascentra members planning to further their education starting the 2018 – 2019 school year. The ten scholarships are awarded to students as follows:

• Five $1,000 scholarships for high school students planning to enter college

• Five $1,000 scholarships for members age 19 or over, considered non-traditional or continuing education students

“Scholarships offer a great opportunity for students to graduate with little or no student loan debt,” said Ascentra President and CEO Dale Owen. “This could potentially save them hundreds of dollars per month in loan payments at a time when they are starting out their lives and could really use that money for other things.” The scholarship entrants will be judged on a 500-word essay on the topic, “What does my credit union membership mean to me?” All entries are judged on their essay, resume, awards, extracurricular ac-tivities, volunteer services and work experience. Deadline for the Ascentra Scholarship Competition is March 3, 2018. Applications and official rules may be picked up at any Ascentra branches or found online at www.as-centra.org/scholarships. There members can also find information on other scholarships. Awarding a total of $10,000 in scholarships is another way Ascentra Credit Union recognizes that financial planning and education is essential to lifetime success for its members and the community.
