My life has taken an exciting turn as I’ve joined Life in

Haslemere as the new Assistant Editor. I’ve enjoyed

tasting the delights of the fifth Haslemere Food

Festival, visiting the ever-competitive Sausage Competition

Launch at the Aga Shop and the fun filled Teddy Bear’s Picnic

at the Lions Green. Following the successful opening of the

Hindhead tunnel in July, I’ve been down to see the work begin

to restore the countryside around the Devil’s Punch Bowl.

Entering the autumn, there is a lot more to look forward

to, with an assortment of activities for both young and old.

Horrific Halloween events will be coming to Haslemere

Museum this October, along with the weekend-long

beer festival at Grayshott Village Hall. As we go into

November, we can start to think about Christmas, with

the traditional fair at St Bartholomew’s Church.

With Christmas in mind, our thoughtful gift guide

will help with avoiding the last minute rush. Sticking

On 14 October, Teenage Cancer Trust will challenge Haslemere residents, schools and workplaces to embrace the colour blue for its first ever ‘Blue Day’.

Locals are being urged to organize their own blue-themed fundraising activities – such as wearing head to toe in blue, eating blueberry pancakes for breakfast, making blue cocktails – or order the charity’s own blue-themed items.

Teenage Cancer Trust has also made special blue cupcakes which can be ordered and delivered directly to homes or workplaces.

Hindhead Golf Club has held a special flag-raising ceremony and black tie dinner in honour of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who founded the club in 1904 and later became its first president. The event took place in September with guest speaker Peter Alliss and special guest Richard Doyle (great, great nephew of Conan Doyle).

Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, fell in love with golf when he lived in South Norwood. In 1895 he brought his consumptive wife to their newly-built house Undershaw in Hindhead where she could “breathe the purer air.” He was keen to continue with his new sporting passion and played an important part in the foundation of the golf club.

"I am myself an intermittent golfer, getting very violent attacks at regular intervals,” he said in October 1898.

The Undershaw Preservation Trust is battling to save the former home of the author of Sherlock Holmes, and is putting

together a display of his time in Hindhead/Undershaw. The Trust was invited to put up a small static display of Conan Doyle's time at Hindhead.

Waverley Borough Council planners have accepted a proposal to redevelop Undershaw as nine residential units. The Trust’s application for a Judicial Review on this decision has been approved by a senior judge, and they await confirmation of a date for the hearing.Undershaw Preservation Trust, www.saveundershaw.com

A fun day was had by all when the BBC Antiques Roadshow visited the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in September. Thousands of people gathered with their treasures hoping to find out more from the experts about their value.

The queues waited patiently in the grey (and slightly damp) weather, holding everything from paintings to life-sized puppets. Weald and Downland staff were on hand to give information and complimentary Tudor-style gingerbread.

Series presenter Fiona Bruce was impressed with the museum. “There are a number of things we look for when we are searching for somewhere to film the Roadshow,” she said.

“Accessibility, the ability to cater for a lot of people and obviously somewhere of historical interest. Weald and Downland

is such a beautiful place and even under these grey skies it is truly fascinating with these beautiful buildings.”

The fourth series of Antiques Roadshow hit our screens on BBC1 in September and will run until April. The Roadshow appears in a number of other locations across the UK, including Hartland Abbey in Devon, Manchester Town Hall and the England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon.

After the Hindhead tunnel opening, attention has turned to restoring countryside around the Devil’s Punch Bowl. The Highways Agency has started the project by breaking up the remains of the road and covering it over with sandstone excavated from the tunnel.

The ground will be seeded with heather and grass from the common. The new mix of plants will grow to match the rest of the Punch Bowl.

environmental benefits of the scheme by restoring the original contours of the Devil’s Punch Bowl, reuniting it with Hindhead Common for the first time in 180 years and creating the largest area of lowland heath in southern Britain.”

A double mini-roundabout at the crossroads in Hindhead will replace the traffic signals. The team hopes to complete the work early in 2012, and hand over to the National Trust, which will work to extend the views across the Devil’s Punch Bowl.www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nature

• Set your budget Decide how much money you’ve got to play with and stick to it. You don’t want to start your married life in debt.

Decide on a wedding date and visit a selection of venues early to choose your date.

• Book the venue Whether you’re getting married in a church or a hotel you want to book the ceremony early. To save time and money you can also hold your ceremony and reception in the same place.

Simone Brinkworth, General Manager at De Vere Branksome Place, says, “I would always advise to book as early as you can. That way you will not be disappointed in not getting your requested day and your requested time. If you choose a civil ceremony then you are unable to book more than a year ahead, so a year to the day, get booking the civil ceremony.”

The Georgian House Hotel is also licensed to hold both civil wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships. Plus, it is the only civil wedding ceremony venue in the town of Haslemere with space for up to 100 guests.

• Choose your photographerPaul Tansley at Stylish Wedding Photography says, “Your photographer should be high on your list of priorities, so try to book as soon as possible once your date’s confirmed. Good photographers are in high demand and get booked fast!”

A wedding consultant can be a great help so if you are having a wedding planner this should be booked now.

• Book the caterer • Your wedding dress

"Your dress is the highlight of your wedding and should be chosen early, preferably a year in advance for couture,” advises Katherine Cusack from Katherine Cusack Couture. “Importantly though, only receive the dress shortly beforehand so it is perfect and fresh on the day."

• Hair Eden Hair & Beauty suggest having your Wedding Hair Trial as soon as you have chosen your dress. “Bring your veil or tiara, special clips, hair pieces, flower samples, LOTS of pictures and even your maid of honour along to your trial.”

If the bridesmaids, mother of the bride and mother in law are being styled as well then you can get them booked in in advance too. Decide whether you want to go to a salon on your big day or if you would rather they came to you.

• Book your wedding car

• Find your flowers Sharon Kerr from Flowers in the Avenue and The Potting Shed says, “Plan your flowers early: book consultations around a year before your wedding day to give you time to look at quotes and make your choice.”

8 - 10 months before

• Confirm the ceremony details Decide on arrangements and discuss the service, readings and music. For a church service, talk to the minister and the organist.

• Organize your bridal party Choose your bridesmaids, best man, pageboys and ushers and make sure everyone knows their responsibilities, then pick your bridesmaids’ dresses.

5-7 Months before

• Choose the groom’s outfit While shopping for the wedding dress is essential, equally important is the groom’s attire.

• Choose the wedding rings Keith Clayton from Clayton Fine Jewellery says, “Try on a few to get an idea of what looks good, particularly when wearing with an engagement ring. Four to six weeks allows time for something to be made especially for you, but cross it off your list of things to organise as early as you can. Whilst for ladies gold or platinum rings are popular, there is also the choice of palladium, particularly where cost is important, for example, with a larger gentleman’s ring.”

Similarly, Angela French, Jeweller at Objets d'Art, explains, "Often wedding rings get left until the last minute. If you like the idea of a specialist material or engraving you will need at least three months to get exactly what you want."

• Your wedding stationery A special illustration for your invitations needs to be ordered promptly.

• The honeymoon plans Consult your travel agent and discuss possible destinations and prices. Book early if you’re going at peak season. Gemma Antrobus, Managing Director, Haslemere Travel, reminds brides and grooms that, “Long-haul favourite destinations for honeymoons may need innoculations and malaria tablets well in advance, so speak to your agent about this when you are planning your Big Day.”

Check your passport is in date and whether you need visas.

• Order foreign currency

• Invitations Send out invitations and make a list of acceptances and refusals.

• Organise the hen and stag parties

3-4 months before

• The wedding cake Emma Higginson from Yours Tastefully suggests giving six-eight weeks’ notice for a wedding cake. However, three – four months’ notice for spring/summer wedding cakes is advised, as these are the busiest wedding months. Fruit cakes can also be made to six weeks’ notice but longer is ideal for the flavour to mature.

• Change your details If you are changing your name, allow at least six weeks for a new passport. Notify your bank, doctor, dentist, etc. 3 months before.

2 months before

• Outfit Try on the outfit, including head-dress, shoes, underwear and jewellery to make sure everything is comfortable.

1 month before Have a final hair/make-up practice to make sure you are completely happy.

Remind your groom to have a trim and to write his speech.

Collect bridal gown and bridesmaids’ dresses.

Send table plans to the caterer. Decide on your wedding makeup.

1 week before

• The reception

• Decide the receiving line orderBrief ushers and bridal party members and make a clear timetable to gather the receiving line. If there is no MC, choose one of the ushers with a good clear voice to make announcements.

Haslemere Beer Festival celebrated its fifth anniversary at Haslemere Hall on 9 and 10 September as part of the 2011 Haslemere Food Festival. Firmly established as a leading festival for real ale enthusiasts and music-lovers, more than 1,000 attended this year’s event.

Over 40 great real ales, ciders and perries, a wide range of live music and delicious local food proved a winning formula for the festival. The most popular brewery, voted for by the beer drinkers themselves, was Havant Brewery. Two of their beers, Havant Herd and Havant, along with Hogs Back England’s Glory, received the most votes. Most popular cider was Mr Whitehead’s Rum Cider.

Great local bands organized by Mike Upjohn of Buskers Express were enjoyed in the evenings and the Meet the Brewers session on the Saturday lunchtime session was the best attended yet.

Simon Labrow, one of the

organizers, said the festival looks to support local brewers, to bring the local community together, to raise money for charity, and to create a great atmosphere. “With more people attending than ever before and both evenings a sell-out we hope everyone agrees!”

The not-for-profit festival is run by volunteers with any surplus funds going to charity. This year the charities supported were Disability Challengers, SERV, Round Table Children’s Wish and Haslemere Hall.

As part of the annual Haslemere Food Festival, children’s cooking workshop specialists Crafty Chefs organized a special allergy-free afternoon tea party at the Highlane community centre. The fun workshop saw children learn some baking techniques, making fairy cakes and gingerbread men. The children then had the chance to enjoy their tasty treats in their very own tea party.

Crafty Chefs co-founder Nicola Mundy said: “The workshop is a great opportunity for children to

develop their cooking skills in a safe and fun environment.”

Lower Roundhurst Farm received the accolade of winning of the Haslemere Food Festival Traditional Sausage competition. The local organic farm produces pedigree beef, lamb and pork. Tom Connell, from Roundhurst, said, “We are delighted with the award. Meat orders are now rushing in!”

Haslemere’s town councillors and residents gathered at the Haslewey centre for the annual Winning Sausage Lunch. Guests enjoyed Lower Roundhurst Farm’s winning pork sausage along with traditional mash.

Among the councillors were the Mayor Jim Edwards, councillors Brian Howard, Michael Dover, Michael and Fay Foster, assistant clerk Lisa O’Sullivan and former councillor James Mackie.

Amongst the guests at the lunch was Weyhill resident Edith Gregory who enjoyed the sausage lunch as part of her 90th birthday celebration. “I’ve lived in Weyhill all my life and I always love coming to the Haslewey centre for my lunch,” she said. A joint initiative by Haslemere Prep School and St Ives School is

helping children to learn through outdoor activities.

The two schools have worked together on Forest School education for a number of years in an initiative pioneered by Head Teachers Patrick Wenham (Haslemere Prep) and Mrs Shaikh (St Ives). Their Foundation Forest School officially opens on 4 October.

Children aged from 4 to 8 from both schools in their respective year groups take part in weekly outdoor learning activities in woodland at St Ives. “It is all about children exploring and experiencing the natural world through practical involvement,” Mrs Shaikh said.

“By using the varied natural resources in our woodland

and combining this with the children’s own interest we will be able to stimulate imagination, creativity and investigative skills. It is a great way of developing social and communication skills, along with thinking skills, confidence and self-esteem as the children work together in small groups or pairs. Every curriculum subject can be covered and enhanced.”

Patrick Wenham added: “The

boys from Haslemere Prep and girls from St Ives have loved Foundation Forest School. The two schools remain committed to the benefits of single sex education, but see Forest School as a fantastic opportunity for pupils to mix and enjoy an educational initiative that is proven to bring significant benefits to children.”

Balanced approachPupils at St Swithun's School have achieved the school's best A-level and GCSE results on record. At A level, 36.8% (compared with a national average of 18.2% in independent schools in 2010) of exams taken by girls at St Swithun's were awarded an A* grade, with 79.1% achieving either an A* or an A grade.

Overall, 259 A-level exams were taken by 63 St Swithun's pupils with 96% of A-levels being awarded A*-B grades. On an individual basis, 11 girls were awarded 3 A*s or better.

At GCSE, 66% of exams taken by girls at St Swithun's were awarded an A* grade – the national average in 2010 was 29.5% in independent schools

and 7.5% across all schools in the UK; 89.6% of exams taken by girls this year were graded A* or A.

This September The Royal School has become the first in Surrey to follow the ‘diamond teaching model’. Lynne Taylor-Gooby, Headmistress of the school, explains: “This means co-education at the youngest ages, single sex in the Prep department to GCSEs, and a co-educational sixth form.

Pupils at Churcher’s College Junior School returned from their summer holidays to find a little bit of magic had taken shape in their grounds. Instead of a bare piece of grass there was a reading area protected by standing stones, a decked music area, a wildlife garden, a hill and a maze. Planting is now taking place and soon the whole area will be a mass of trees, shrubs, herbs and plants. There might even be a few surprises lurking in hidden corners.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the parents, this new area will be ready by half term. As an outdoor classroom it will

provide a stimulating and unique setting in which to explore and develop all areas of the curriculum. Pupils’ ideas have helped to create the garden and they are now working on a time capsule which will be buried for future pupils to find.

It was a summer of high adventure for sixth formers from Godalming College

who packed their rucksacks to take part in a four-week expedition to Tanzania.

The 13 students combined a safari in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and time spent with the local Maasai tribe, with a community project in Moshi, the centre of the country’s coffee-producing region. Another project in the northern seaport of Tanga involved marine conservation work.

Having completed their A-levels this was a trip of a lifetime for the students, with

the chance to develop life skills before embarking on university courses, or employment.

Speaking about the expedition, tutor Amy Tidd says, “Tanzania was a real eye-opener for our students, it’s a privilege to work within other communities and to realise that you can make a difference to their lives.”

A record-breaking group of Year 8 pupils at Highfield School have

something to celebrate as the scholarship season draws to a close. Fourteen Year 8 pupils have secured 17 major scholarships and awards to their senior schools, for academic, artistic and sporting excellence, breaking the school’s previous record of 16 awards last year.

The scholarships were awarded to the top academic institutions in the country – Marlborough College, Bryanston School, and Charterhouse. All Highfield Year 8 pupils have secured places at their first choice senior schools on the strength of their Common Entrance Exam results.

They celebrated the end of months of hard work with an exciting trip to the Cleddau Estuary in Wales. The pupils enjoyed a thrilling, action-

packed week of water sports; ‘coasteering’, kayaking, raft building, sailing, rock climbing and abseiling off dams.

The Grayshott Folk Club creates a special space where audiences can enjoy music at affordable prices – on their doorstep.

Club founder Des O'Bryne says: “I started up Grayshott Folk Club to encourage young, local musicians by giving them an opportunity to showcase their talents to a wider audience. The club is already gaining an excellent reputation amongst musicians, who come from all over the UK to play in Grayshott, and audience members have travelled from as far afield as Kent, Wales and Brighton to attend gigs.”

Over the past six months the club has put on a variety of gigs, showcasing a broad range of music including;

folk/rock, English folk/Americana, Celtic folk, young new folk, folk rock legends and Scottish folk. There is no membership or joining fee for the club and audiences are free to pick and choose the gigs they come to.

This autumn Des hopes to offer even more quality folk music with top gigs including the 'More Folk/Rock Legends Than You Could Shake A Stick At' on Saturday 8 October at the Grayshott Village Hall. This September saw GalleryOne celebrate its 10th anniversary. Opening in Barnes, London, three days before the 9/11 attacks in New York, GalleryOne entered a world which was staring straight into the face of adversity. It was apparent that the gallery would have to shout at some volume to receive attention.

So, with early exhibitions including the likes of Picasso, Piper and Bacon, GalleryOne made itself heard. After nearly five successful formative years in Barnes, the decision was taken to relocate to Grayshott. This proved to be a shrewd move, as the rapidly maturing gallery met a new market with a real hunger for contemporary art.

Unfortunately, while the GalleryOne team were occupied with enhancing the gallery’s already strong reputation with the new locale, they also had to contend with the recession. This led to GalleryOne adapting to the changes in the market. Thankfully, with the experience of their director, they could do so without compromising the vision and character already established.

8 October 2011 is the first anniversary of Grayshott Children’s Theatre and to celebrate they will be opening their doors to ‘the magnificent, and very polite”, Shoe Baby by Long Nose Puppets.

This enchanting story by mother and daughter team Joyce and Polly Dunbar is told through puppetry, shadow and music – the latter composed by Tom Gray of Gomez – and is a perfect autumn treat for children aged 2-7 and their families.

Children’s Theatre Trumpeting successGrayshott Concerts are busier than ever this autumn staging two high profile concerts in a month. The first, with a top London choir, is at 7.30pm on Saturday 8 October at St Luke’s Church in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

Called ‘Hear My Prayer’, the concert will feature London’s famous Pegasus Choir on World Hospice Day. Since their TV success on BBC’s ‘Choir of the Year’ Competition, the group have become renowned for their unaccompanied singing.

Their programme will span almost 400 years of works including Allegri’s haunting ‘Miserere’, and Mendelssohn’s popular ‘Hear My Prayer’.

“The choir have waived their usual fee,” says organizer Peter Harrison, “so the tickets, at only £10 each, are especially good value for a performance of this quality.”

The second event,on Friday 4 November, stars trumpeter Alison Balsom, the winner of Classic Brits ‘Female Artist of 2011’ Award,

dubbed ‘Britain’s most exciting young soloist’.

Her programme called ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound’, starts at 7.30pm and will include Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto with the famous London Mozart Players conducted by Hilary Davan-Wetton. Unsurprisingly, the event was sold out in July. Returns may be available.

There comes a time in all our lives when we, or someone close to us, need a bit of help. For many

elderly people the thought of needing help can cause more anxiety than the infirmity they have to face, and there is a nagging fear that if they ask for help they will inevitably lose their independence.

But there is plenty of care available to help an individual remain at home and leading a full life – it’s just a question of knowing where to go and who to ask.

Alarm bells should ring when an elderly person is: • noteatingproperlyorregularly• feelingincreasinglyisolated• pronetofalling

• physicallyimpaired• showingconcernsovermemoryloss

The first person to approach is the Community Nurse (formerly the District Nurse) who is contactable via your GP. Haslemere’s Community Nursing Team is based at the Health Centre and they will be able to advise what an individual is entitled to through the NHS Foundation Trust.

Attendance Allowance is a tax-free social security benefit for those who need some supervision with their personal care in order to keep safe at home. It is not means-tested, and comes in two categories – for those who need help during the day, and a higher sum for those who also need care at night. (For those under 65 years of age the Attendance Allowance is

called the Disability Living Allowance). The Attendance Allowance form is

long and complicated. Age UK and the CAB will help you fill it in. Age UK will visit your home to do this – their help will prove well worthwhile.

When an elderly person is cared for to some degree by their local authority – whether it be in a care home or just visiting a day centre, look at the website of the Care Quality Commission who regulate all care whether it be NHS, local authority, private or voluntary.

Anyone who has assets of more than £23,250 (including the value of their property) has to pay for their care. Before spending savings, it is worth seeking the advise of an Independent Financial Adviser. Gordon Tate specializes in inheritance tax, long-term planning and funding elderly care. He will come to your house and advice on the best possible financial planning for your situation. “My job,” says Gordon, “is to remove the stresses caused by not knowing what the available options are, and providing peace of mind.”

The Alzheimers’ Society offers great support and advice for those suffering from dementia, and the people who care for them. Mary Jordan from the Haslemere branch will home visit and assess the patient and talk through the options available.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is a brilliant organization which helps people of any age with legal and complicated matters, and they are experienced at helping the elderly particularly with pensions, family matters, etc. CAB will help fill in forms for housing benefit, tax credit, Attendance Allowance, etc.

Another excellent charity is Cross Roads Care, “the people who carers turn to”. They offer great support to carers of the frail or disabled who, as they themselves get older or their situation becomes more critical, need to know where to go for help.

Acupuncture Never having had acupuncture before, I was a bit wary about the prospect of having needles stuck into me. Thankfully, within moments of entering The Acupuncture Health Clinic in Haslemere, acupuncture specialist Simon Casciano had put me at ease.

As soon as Simon had reassured me the therapy wouldn’t hurt, he explained how acupuncture works using a system of medicine that restores and maintains health by inserting fine needles into specific points on the surface of the body. The action of needling these points stimulates the body to rebalance itself, activating our own self-healing powers.

After explaining more about the 2000-year history of acupuncture, Simon began my treatment. The process started with a consultation, where Simon asked me a series of questions to discover more about my individual energy movement. This was particularly important as throughout the therapy Simon explained how acupuncture worked by “treating the individual, not the disease” and how no two people were the same.

Based on a ‘Stems and Branches’ tradition, Simon then created a birth chart and highlighted any possible strengths and weakness in my overall constitution.

Once Simon had created my chart, he took a series of pulses to identify my different element movements, before picking the best points to insert the needles into me. I was surprised (and pleased) when Simon told me that he would only be inserting two

needles. The first just above my ankle and the second in my foot, as these were the two best points to stimulate my ‘energy flow.’

As Simon entered the needles I felt a minor scratch but within seconds I had forgotten they were there and simply felt relaxed. After inserting the needles, Simon continued to take my pulse and talked me through the changes he could feel to my energy flow.

When it comes to eggs, you can’t get much more local than your

Moving on to cattle, Lower Roundhurst Farm on Tennyson’s Lane produces a range of quality local pedigree beef, as well as lamb and pork. This year’s Haslemere Food Festival also

saw the farm named the winner of the sausage competition.

Another winner at the Food Festival, this time for the speciality sausage award, was Grayshott butcher, fishmongers and delicatessen, Kaighin & Daughter. Given the award for their hot Spanish chicken sausage, Kaighin & Daughter have some 30 different varieties of sausages in their recipe book, which they rotate by popularity and the seasons. At Rother Valley Organics all the meat is fully traceable and the Spracklings have even built their own on-site butchery where they employ master butchers to ensure the meat is cut and presented to the highest standards.

There are also a number of pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy Haslemere’s local ingredients. Having succeeded potty training my daughter I thought it would be a walk in the park second

time round with my three-year-old son. I mean, how hard can it be?

I admit I’ve left it quite late, partly due to pure laziness plus a lack of time. However, I was a little embarrassed when a very confident two-year-old pointed out that my son was still wearing a nappy. It was at this juncture I took it upon myself to embark upon operation potty-training.

The long summer holidays had arrived and so I had plenty of time and no excuses. The well-known phrase about leading a horse to water really struck a chord with me because for love nor money I could not lead my stubborn son to any loo or potty. He refused, point blank so I had failed at the first hurdle. But, I knew

I had to get back up and try again. Although my son is very able he’s not very

willing. I would win an Oscar for praising every child we know wearing “big boy pants”. I’ve tried reading potty training books, bribery and bought every pair of fun character pants under the sun – from comedy ambulances to six-eyed aliens, but no matter, he’s just not interested.

In my vulnerable state I must be an advertiser’s dream. I was frantically searching the internet for novelty potties, bright ones, glow in the dark, dancing, singing and flashing ones. You name it, I was looking at them. Money no object. If it meant my son was nappy-free then so be it.

You can imagine my delight when the expensive neon, novelty, frog potty arrived in the post, the answer to my prayers. Potty unpackaged the green frog was ready to

go; all it needed was one enthusiastic boy. He shrieked with delight when he saw

the huge frog eyes looking at him, so far so good: “Is this really for me. I love it.” Ah success, but then he promptly turned on his little heels and left the room leaving me alone with the frog.

This task was really hard, I was on the brink of searching Yell for a Potty Training School where for one week you drop your child off and they came back potty trained, but, alas, no such thing exists.

I decided to go cold turkey and, with novelty pants on, my son and I turned our backs on nappies. I would be lying if I said we had cracked it, but slowly but surely we are making progress.

There have been some funny moments amongst the frustration. Once, my son proudly pulled down his trousers on a park round-about, showing off his new crocodile pants to a surprised seven-year-old. Then he accidentally weed on a bouncy castle which resulted in children screaming and mass evacuation, much to my embarrassment.

Believe me, I’ll be delighted to see the back of the green frog who glares at me every time I walk in the bathroom.

HHH Concerts’ new season begins on Saturday 8 October at St Christopher’s

Church, Weyhill, Haslemere, with a performance by the Atrium String Quartet from St Petersburg. Winner of many prestigious prizes, the Atrium’s programme will include string quartets by Haydn, Shostakovich and Smetana.

There are five concerts in all, and the two other concerts in the Autumn will feature Trio Anima, with music for flute, viola and harp by Bax, Debussy, Ravel and Britten; and the Sitkovetsky Piano Trio (Alexander Sitkovetsky violin, Wu Qian piano, Leonard Elschenbroich cello) with music by Haydn, Smetana and Brahms.

Quartet, Benedetti Piano Trio, pianist Martin Helmchen and violinist Charlie Siem have delighted the Haslemere audience with stunning performances.

A new satellite youth theatre for young people in the Midhurst area has launched from September by Chichester Festival Theatre.

The groups are open to anyone aged 10-19 who enjoy creating and performing and would like to have fun in a stimulating environment while learning about the workings of a professional theatre. The sessions will be led by Chichester Festival Theatre’s Senior Youth Theatre Leader Megan Purdie.

There will be weekly workshops for two age groups, one aimed at school years 6-9, and the other for years 10-13. The classes will be held at The Midhurst Rother Valley College, Drama Hall, Easebourne site on Monday evenings from September 19 from 6pm-7.30pm for the younger group, and 7.30pm-9pm for the older group.

When Gary and Jenny West set up a business selling cruises at their home, they little knew

that within five years it would become one of the fastest growing and most successful companies in the country.

It all started after Jenny West had been made redundant by P & O Ferries and then she became pregnant with their son Samuel. As she and Gary both worked within the travel industry, the idea was born for Planet Cruise, a niche market company to sell cruise holidays.

Jenny did the initial testing and the business earned £120,000 in revenue in the

first year of trading. Planet Cruise started in earnest in 2006 when Gary came on board.

Gary’s parents Gordon & Rosemary ran the hairdressers Justin in Weyhill for almost 30 years until they retired two years ago. His Dad was born in Grayshott, and Mum in Haslemere. He grew up and went to school locally and said his parents probably gave him the “entrepreneurial gene”.

He was a director at Royal Caribbean, and completed an MBA at Ashridge College between 2003 and 2005. “The cruise market was very robust,” Gary recalls, “and 95% of people who take a cruise holiday go cruising again.”

In May 2006 Planet Cruise moved to its present location in Petersfield, with a handful of staff in one room of 500 sq ft. Initially the business was niche market reselling – taking packages from the cruise operators and selling them on to customers.

In June that year they organized their first reader offer, from Southampton to the Med; they brought in some additional part-timers to help with phone selling, and achieved some £45,000 worth of sales. Since 2007 reader offers in newspapers have become a key product for the business. Now the national press – such as The Times, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Express and the Daily Mail – feature regular advertisements and cruise supplements in association with Planet Cruise.

In 2008, the year that Lehman brothers went bankrupt, the Wests appointed a commercial director, Simon Morris, who had worked for Thomas Cook. “That was a difficult three months after Lehmans,” says Gary. “But we have always managed to keep ahead of the ever-changing market by analyzing it and looking out for opportunities.”

Annual Growth: 182%In 2009 Planet Cruise’s sales rose to £13.5m (with a staff of 26), and up from £603,000 in 2006. They will achieve an expected £30 million plus this year – representing annual growth of 182%.

Today Planet Cruise has a staff of more than 50, with great emphasis on customer service. “I want each customer to be treated as if they were my parents,” says Jenny. They have gone into home shopping TV and Jenny goes to Peterborough to front the only cruise programme, on Freeview on Tuesday evenings. The next showings are on 4 and 18 October; 1 and 15 November; and 6 December.

The Wests once believed that the company would go entirely online and, although their website gets more than 50,000 hits a day, most of Planet Cruise’s business is done on the telephone. Their Petersfield call centre is closed for only four days a year.

Planet Cruise has been winning awards since the start. In 2010 they were fifth in the Sunday Times list of the Fast Track 100 companies, sponsored by Virgin; they were Cruise Agent of the Year as well as having the Most Improved Revenue and the Biggest Year on Year sales growth by a call centre.

This year the Association of Cruise Experts (ACE) made Planet Cruise Agency of the Year. In the summer Gary and Jenny were among 150 guests invited to 10 Downing Street in recognition of their achievements.

Gary and Jenny have bought a new home recently and plan to move in next year with their son Samuel, who is now 8, and daughter Lily, aged 5. They are also expanding their office space, taking a neighbouring floor.

They attribute their success to keeping a close eye on a market which they know well, and moving swiftly to package holidays immediately new destinations become available. in the area to come and see what they are all about in August as part of the Meet the Business scheme set up by the Haslemere Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Hosted by Haslemere Chamber president Julianne Evans and Branksome Place manager Simone Brinkworth, members enjoyedanentertainingtalk by Haslemere’s Town Crier, Christian Ashdown, followed by a barbecue.

During the talk Christian gave a full history of the origins of Town Criers, including interesting facts about how they vary from town to town, their original function, and their role today in the community.

Place, with a three-course meal. The venue also staged a Summer Fun Day in August in aid of the Variety Club. The fun included a BBQ, bouncy castles, games, races, stalls, crafts and a dog show.

Where did the summer go? Looking out of the kitchen

window, the tinges of autumn are turning the leaves as we write. For a lot of busy people, the summer has passed and the children have gone back to school. But one thing on the ‘to do’ list still remains – improving the garden, I hear the sigh – another year has passed and the garden will just have to wait until next Easter.

Don’t despair, this is actually the perfect time of year to tackle a fading border which is missing that certain something. And if you don’t know where to start, that’s where Transform Landscapes, based in Haslemere, can help. Transform can provide the design expertise to help you create the garden you’ve always dreamed of or improve an existing one.

They have been designing and creating gardens since 1988. Designers Lucy Chandler and Nick Hart believe that now is the best time of the year to get the ideas flowing and draw up a garden. The garden can be built and planted through the winter.

This means that, by the time the warmer weather arrives, which could be as early as spring if this year is anything to go by, the garden will be built and ready to use. It also

has many cost benefits. For example, trees and hedging become available as bare rootstock, which means you get more for your money and they are much more likely to take.

It’s also good for most herbaceous plants as they are in the ground ready for the first moment spring arrives. This will maximise the amount of growth in the first year meaning they look good from spring. And don’t forget the amazing array of bulbs that can go in now for

a definite splash of colour.So if you’re struggling for

ideas, need some advice or really don’t know a dandelion from a foxglove, get in contact with the designers at Transform. They can help you make the most of your outdoor space.
