Autumn is my favourite season. I love crisp, hazy mornings,

I love blackberry picking-it reminds me of my childhood,

though I’m not mad keen on the blackberries themselves!

Autumn seems to me about new beginnings and ventures

almost more than the New Year. The Olympics and

Paralympics which were such a success have given us a

boost with the whole country supporting all those amazing ,

inspirational athletes. I believe they will have encouraged

many of us to take up new challenges.

For young people who have left school or just graduated

from university finding a first job is a daunting prospect. If

you are in this situation, and need a bit of advice on how to

present yourself and stand out from the crowd, then

contact Powerful Communication (p. 7).

Now is the best time to rethink your garden plans if you

need to. Consider hard landscaping. Planting trees and

shrubs in the autumn while the earth is still warm will give

them a good start, and put in your spring flowering bulbs in

preparation for a wonderful display of colour next year.

This is your last chance to book tickets to see the Haslemere

Players production of The sound of Music from 23rd to 27th

October. Tickets are going fast, so don’t miss out. See p. 35

for details.

I had to mention Christmas didn’t I? There must be fewer

than 100 shopping days left! The annual Charities Fair on

10th November is great for stocking fillers among lots of

other things (see p.37) and the Christmas Market at The

Grange (p.31) in Midhurst is a date for your diary, 24th

November.

SM Technologies (see p.39) is an

information technology consultancy

working out of Surrey with private

clients and businesses around the

world. We provide a wide range of

services, but are focussed on

retained IT support contracts, our

very strong Web Development

skills, and our specialisation, Data

Loss Prevention (DLP).

DLP is a relatively new aspect of our

industry but is fast becoming one of

the most important. You will no

doubt have read the many news

stories about various Government

agencies and contractors that have

leaked vast amounts of private

information. These are generally

always accidents or a result of

carelessness, but they are never-

theless unacceptable. Since 2009

we have been working on a

combined set of methods to

combat Data Loss for a variety of

businesses. All companies and

individuals handling personal

information within the UK have to

satisfy at the very minimum, the

Data Protection Act, or face very

serious fines should there be a

breach. In addition to that, we try

to emphasise that while you must

of course take care of your

customer data, that very data is

normally your main source of

income, so satisfying EU regulations

is rarely enough.

We deal with a variety of scenarios,

from managing the fallout from a

breach, to addressing mild concerns

on whether measures already taken

are enough or even too much.

Some of our most serious cases

arise from employees removing

data from a business for their own

gain. A survey carried out by Prefix

IT indicates some 30% of employees

believe sales leads and business

contacts are their own to keep!

Our proven methods have saved

one of our clients an estimated £4

million of potential revenue loss in

two years, from employee data

theft alone.

Despite this, we still have an

emphasis on facilitating secure data

usage, rather than being restrictive

and stopping data flow. This

ensures businesses can continue as

normal, but with more security and

peace of mind than ever.

For more information on DLP or to

find out about our Web Design or IT

Support services, please email us at

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy

What is the one key difference between

Olympic athletes and many of the rest of

us? The Olympic athletes believe,

absolutely, that they can win. In the past

few weeks we have all seen the amazing

feats they have achieved. As Michael

Korda, the famous book publisher one said

“In order to succeed, we must first believe

that we can” Or as Eleanor Roosevelt

wrote, “It’s not who you are that holds you

back, it’s who you think you're not”.

One of the characteristics of hypnosis is

that it enables a person to amplify what

he/she wants to believe until it becomes

what he/she does believe.

Many top sports people are coached using

hypnosis as a way of getting to that place

of believing that they can.

In a similar way people often make an

appointment at my clinic wanting to stop

smoking, yet believing themselves to be

smokers. They can leave an hour and a half

later knowing and believing that they are

non smokers. Non smokers do not smoke.

Then there are the people who turn up

believing that they are going to clam up

when they make a wedding speech, or an

important company presentation. They are

right. They probably will. But after two or

three sessions of hypnosis they know they

can make that speech. They may even be

looking forward to it. Then they do it.

Successfully.

Above all there is self belief. If you are

someone who feels out of control or

unable to cope, what would it be like if you

knew that somehow you would deal with

any situation that was likely to crop up in

your daily life. It would be very different.

And it can be. We all have that capacity.

As those Olympic athletes do, we need to

learn how to tap into the innate strengths

and qualities that each of us has. If some-

one with one leg can jump over a 1.8 metre

bar, what does that mean for you and me?

How big are our mental barriers and what

would it be like if we cleared them?

“In order to succeed, we must first believe

that we can”.

that feeling of "come on, if they can do

that, I can find 20 minutes to do a

here's a way which will help you keep

it. When you first get that surge of

"let's do it", hold onto the determina-

it in your mind and write down exactly

what it is you're feeling - it might be

"everyone else can do it, why can't I?"

Can we talk? Initiating a

difficult conversation

Often the most difficult conversations to be had

are with people who are important to you. The

crucial ingredient is having the right mindset.

The best approach is to start from the premise

there are no bad guys. It can be hard to think like

this if you are feeling hurt or guilty, but

continuing a cycle of blame and criticism (of

yourself or others) prevents relationships from

moving forward. There may have been inappro-

priate or unacceptable behaviour but a willing-

ness to see things differently is half way to

resolving the problem.

It takes courage to initiate a difficult conversation,

so here are some guidelines to help make those

difficult first steps easier:

1. Make an appointment. It sounds a little formal

but springing a difficult conversation on someone

without warning puts them at a disadvantage and

creates defensiveness. Acknowledging there’s a

problem and that you'd like to talk about it allows

time for both parties to feel prepared. It is also

important to put a timeframe on the meeting. 40

minutes is a good time span for a first meeting –

any longer and more issues may get introduced

and overload the situation. Too little time and

you may feel pressured, leaving no time to get to

the heart of the problem.

2. Acknowledge the purpose. Good openers

are ‘I want to talk about this because I don’t want

to be thinking like this any more’ or ‘this may not

come out right, but I want to say it to resolve our

differences and not keep blaming’. Set up some

common agreements from the start like ‘let’s agree

to no insults, aggression or walking out’. Remember

your intention, be clear what you would like as an

outcome. If you feel things are going in circles (a

sure sign of a fight brewing) pause, take a breath

and re-focus.

3. Create the right space. Choose the meeting

place with both parties in mind. Remember, both

sides are feeling vulnerable regardless of their

behaviour. Making it safe to meet helps you invest

in a successful outcome. Sometimes its best to meet

in public, especially if there’s a degree of emotional

charge in the relationship.

4. Listen with your heart. When we believe we are

under attack we become defensive. Learning to talk

and listen from a deeper place makes it safer to

communicate honestly. Don’t go prepared with a

speech or thinking you’ll know what the other will

say, stay open and relaxed - as best you can - and be

willing to be wrong! If you stay ‘right’ it blocks the

possibility for change. You always have the choice to

be right or to be kind. Being right keeps the fight

running, kindness benefits both parties.

5. Review. At the end of your time together express

gratitude for the opportunity to talk, review what

was discussed and agreed. Check-in with how

you’re both feeling and make sure you’re both clear

about what was discussed and what the next step

needs to be.

There's a way to ♦ Provide for guardianship of minor

children

♦ Set up a trust fund for minor children

♦ Ensure that children do not inherit too

young (at 18!)

♦ Ensure that your husband/wife inherits

enough

♦ Protect your children’s inheritance

from remarriage or Care Fees

♦ Provide for an unmarried partner

If you should die without a Will the legal

order of distribution of your property

could cause considerable hardship:

♦ A wife/husband inherits personal

property and the first £250,000

outright if you have children.

♦ Children inherit at 18 which is hardly a

responsible age.

♦ A surviving spouse may eventually

remarry and forget to make another

Will. Thus assets may leave the family.

♦ A surviving spouse may go into Care in

old age and the assets may be taken to

pay for Care Fees.

♦ An unmarried partner inherits nothing.

A Will is sensible lifetime planning which

can ensure that your loved ones are

properly provided for.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s) Anyone can suffer accident or illness. If

they have appointed a trusted attorney to

protect their interests this is an important

safeguard.

As people age they may be less energetic

and dynamic and they may wish to rely

on the energy and commitment of their

adult children who they have appointed

attorneys. If they should become ill it

may be vital that their interests can be

protected.

A “Wait and See” approach does not

work because it takes at least three

months to register these documents and

they cannot be used unless they have

been registered.

It is wise to put them in place now.

Ben Clutterbuck HND Arb; M.Arbor A

Tree Care Manager, Transform Landscapes

Transform Landscapes 01428 652222 www.transformlandscapes.co.uk

In the words of William Blake, we are lucky to live in

such ‘a green and pleasant land’, enhanced greatly

by the abundance of trees in the South East of

England. Trees have been called the lungs of the

earth as they replenish the oxygen we use. An acre

of trees produces enough breathing oxygen for 18

people every day.

Look around your local area - you may never have

noticed the abundance of different varieties of trees

and their ever changing colours, flowers, shapes,

forms and textures depending on the season. These

trees and hedgerows also support an abundance of

wildlife, from insects to birds and small mammals.

But as we increasingly put pressure on our country-

side with new homes and infrastructure, our trees

can sometimes be threatened. Cutting down wood-

land, trees and groups of trees can destroy the

character of an environment and also the wildlife

that live amongst it.

It is for this reason that Tree Preservation Orders

(TPO) exist. Local Councils have a legal duty to

protect trees. Urban myth would have us believe

that particular species or size of trees are protected,

but this is not true, and nor are all trees

automatically protected. Any tree that is believed to

be under threat can be eligible for protection,

regardless of age, species or size. Where trees make

a particular visual contribution to the locality, are of

benefit to the general public, or are of major

significance, then a TPO can be put into place to

protect individual trees, groups, areas or woodlands.

A TPO is legally enforceable by the Local Planning

Authority (LPA) and it prohibits the cutting down,

uprooting, topping, lopping, or wilful damage or

destruction to protected trees or woodlands. This

applies to roots as well as stems and branches.

Before making the Order, the LPA makes an

assessment of the tree and its impact on the local

landscape. If an order is justified it will be served on

the relevant parties and any objections raised within

28 days. Any contraventions of the TPO can involve a

fine of up to £20,000, with a legal duty to replace

any tree removed without permission. For serious

offences an unlimited fine can be imposed.

If you are moving to a new property and do not

know whether your trees have a TPO imposed on

them, it is always worth checking with your LPA.

Work can be carried out on a protected tree but it is

always best to seek advice from a suitably qualified

arboriculturist, and permission does need to be

sought from the LPA. Good management of

protected trees will be supported by your LPA.

Protected trees can be cut down, with LPA

permission, if they are dead, dying or dangerous.

If you think that unauthorised work is being carried

out on trees in your locality, then you can contact

your local Council’s planning department. All TPO

applications and Conservation Area tree work

notifications are processed as planning applications

so information can normally be accessed online.

Take another look at the trees around you, and

whilst TPOs may seem like a bureaucratic nightmare,

they are there to help protect our environment for

all to enjoy.
