As December draws another year to a close, I have to say, this year

has been an incredible one for Estrella. We have enjoyed many wonderful community events,

some that are new and some that we have come to expect, but one thing for sure is that they just keep getting better.

Participation at these events is what brings us together as a community, developing lasting memories and creating new relationships.

Meanwhile, major projects to improve the aesthetics of the community have been completed. The ornamental lights are now all refurbished. The block and iron walls throughout the community have been renovated and painted. This project will continue into 2014 in many more communities. The lake view wall renovation is underway. Thousands of tons of gravel and thousands of trees and plants have been replaced. The community is really coming alive with all of the improvements, new neighborhoods and new residents.

There is no wonder why you live here in Estrella. This is a first-class community with top-notch events, clubs, classes and a very positive sense of community. Your Estrella HOA staff takes great

pride in the work that they perform throughout our community, keeping the amenities in superior condition, creating new and innovative events for residents to enjoy for years to come, and providing top-notch customer service.

With that said, all of us at the Estrella Community Services Office would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season, and we are looking forward to serving you in 2014.

The Holidays are right around the corner and the stores are stocked with festive decorations. Given the wide range of worship preference and ethnic backgrounds of the residents of Estrella, the types of decorations to be displayed will not be regulated. However, the Design Review Committee has established periods of time that such decorations can be displayed. Seasonal decorations may be displayed from November 1 to January 31, and no earlier than one (1) week before and no later than one (1) week after any nationally recognized holiday not falling within the previously mentioned months. We are excited to see what holiday decorating ideas our residents have for us to enjoy.

Are you an administrator of an organized group that meets here at Starpointe? If you are please contact Tammy Campbell at 623-386-1949 or [email protected]. It’s that time of year again where we need to update our records. Does your group still meet on the days and times chosen last year? Is there a new administrator for your group? Does the room set up you have still work for your group? These are all questions that need to be answered. Thank you in advance for everyone’s cooperation.

Get healthy & possibly Save moneyBy Debbie Harper, Operations Manager

Did you ever think that owning a home in Estrella may have some financial dividends? Did you know that some

insurance companies and some places of employment actually reimburse their members or employees if they belong to a health club?

Homeowners in Estrella pay quarterly assessments to their respective Community Associations. A portion of those assessments get paid to the Estrella Joint Committee, the overseer of all common areas including the Starpointe Resident Club.

Inside your fabulous Resident Club is the Starpointe Fitness Center. Try out the various equipment including cardio, rowing, stair climber, elliptical, treadmills, weight machines, and free weights. The club also offers a variety of fitness classes and personal trainers.

Has it been a while since you last visited a gym? Come by the Resident Club and sign up for the

free Adult Education Fitness Program (A.E.F.P). When you are done taking this refresher class you will have no problem programming the machines and knowing proper gym etiquette. Classes are offered once a month, but fill up fast.

To find out if you quality for a refund, the best thing to do is check with your health care provider or employer to see what options are available to you. They realize that preventive care is the best route to keeping you as healthy as possible (saving them money) ... so you might be pleasantly surprised to find out that you will be rewarded for taking care of yourself. The staff will be glad to assist you if you need a letter for your insurance carrier or your employer. See you in the gym!

Watering for the Winter monthsJim Trog, CLWM, CIC, CLIA, Water Conservation Manager – Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

>>>SNippETS

With the prediction for another dry winter, the need for supplemental irrigation in the winter months will be as vitally

important to the health of your landscape plants as it is in the summer. Although, winter rains do provide more of a margin for error when it comes to irrigation, it is essential to have a plan to keep your landscape healthy. Unless your landscape consists of Bursage, Cactii or other southwest native plant material, this most likely applies to you.

Irrigation is an area of the landscape that is often overlooked during our cool season. While many plants have gone into a dormant stage and aren’t readily showing signs of growth, they are busy storing the nutrients and building root systems that will help them spring back to life as temperatures warm. Neglecting them now will have negative results in the Spring when plants are slow to rebound from the Winter. Additionally, stress induced on Pine Trees due to the lack of winter moisture is one of the leading causes of death due to Pine Tree Blight.

Maintaining adequate soil moisture also minimizes the injury suffered from plants and trees during the periods of freezing weather we may see over the next few months. Leaves, stems and branches that are under stress due to dehydration are damaged easier during a freeze when compared

to other plants that have adequate moisture stores in their outer extremities.

This is not to say that we should continue to irrigate our plant material at the same rate we did in July. Obviously, we should be watering far less. As a matter of fact, by January, we should only be using about 10% to 15% of the water on our plants and trees compared to what they received during the hot summer months.

How frequently you need to water depends greatly on your soil type. A clay type soil will retain moisture better than a sandy, well-drained soil type. Your best bet is to occasionally probe the soil with a screwdriver or the like to see just how much moisture is there. Typically, giving your trees a good soak once a month and your shrubs every one to two weeks should be adequate. Non over seeded turf will benefit from a watering once every 28 days or so once it is dormant after the first frost. Any more than that may only encourage weeds to grow in the lawn. And don’t forget, if we get a good rain, you should be able to skip a watering cycle or two.

The Estrella community is home to three top-notch schools

in both the Liberty and Buckeye School Districts: Estrella

With the holiday season upon us, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past year and the things that have truly made an impact on our lives and

the greater community. Looking back at 2013 what stands out to us the most is your commitment to community and the warmth and closeness so evident among our residents.

All of our residents have different stories and have made it “up the hill” from different places, but everyone here would

agree that they have found something special in Estrella. The community is built upon a sense of togetherness, where neighbors know each other by name and people join together whenever there is a need to support their fellow neighbor.

One of the opportunities we have this season is to seek out ways to help support others and a program we thought our residents would enjoy embracing along with us is the City of Goodyear’s Fill-A-Need initiative. The holiday drive works to brighten the season by providing gifts for children of less fortunate families in Goodyear and the surrounding areas. We will be joining the program by collecting toys here in Estrella. Residents are encouraged to drop off new, unwrapped toys, clothing and school supplies for children 17 and under at Estrella’s Information Center now through December 11. Clothing is the most requested item and the program works to fill that need, but also ensure each child receives a toy or fun gift as well. Please call the Information Center for more details, 623-386-1000.

The Fill-A-Need program could also use wrapping volunteers December 11 – December 13. For more information or to signup for wrapping duty, call 623-882-7081 or visit www.ci.goodyear.az.us.

Another great way to support the community is by purchasing a school calendar. In its second year, the calendar showcases artwork from local students portraying “What I Love About Estrella” and is available for purchase at Starpointe Residents Club for $5. In support of its community schools, Newland organized and funded the calendar project and Capitol Litho generously underwrote a portion of the print costs again this year. The calendars make great holiday gifts and 100% of profits benefit Estrella’s three schools – Estrella Mountain Elementary, Westar Elementary and Estrella Foothills High School.

Newland wishes you and your family a healthy and happy holiday season. We are looking forward to another great year, and we are excited for what 2014 holds.

G oodyear Police D e p a r t m e n t is an agency

comprised of individuals committed to making a positive difference in the community it serves, even for our four-legged friends!

On July 30, 2013, police were called out

to a Goodyear residence, on a complaint of animal abuse and neglect. When police personnel arrived, they discovered a very disturbing sight! A male Rottweiler was living on the side of a house with no shelter from the hot summer sun, lying on feces-covered gravel. There was very minimal food and water available, and no human interaction. It was later reported that this dog had been living in these dismal conditions for approximately two years.

The Goodyear Police Department contacted the compassionate folks at The Rotten Rottie Rescue and this sweet boy was rescued and placed in immediate foster care and renamed Erie. But, that is

LIFEINESTRELLA.COM | OCTOBER 2013 | 23

CITYMaking A Difference for Our Four-Legged FriendsBy Lisa Kutis, PIO, Goodyear Police Department

not the end of Erie’s story….

Erie had some difficulty getting along with others. After two years of enduring harsh living conditions, Erie developed behavioral problems and trust issues. Unfortunately, Erie’s behavioral issues rendered him unadoptable.

When pets are not adoptable, they typically end up being euthanized. This was a disturbing reality for the employees at the Goodyear Police Department who had worked so hard to get Erie rescued; this was a reality they were unwilling to accept. The good people at the Rotten Rottie Rescue reported back to the department, “Erie wants to be a good boy; he just needs to learn how.”

After learning that the specialized training Erie required would cost approximately $750, Goodyear Police Department Personnel reached deep into their hearts and wallets and took up a donation with the mission of saving Erie’s life. The good news is that enough money was pledged through employee and outside donations for Erie to go to training to become an adoptable companion. Goodyear Police employees agree, “We may not be able to save them all, but

we can make a difference one customer at a time!”

T he EMR Motorcycle Riding Group formed in April of this

year. About the same time AZ Bike Week pre-rally days

kicked off. For those who are unaware, AZ Bike Week is an

annual occurrence, and is comprised of five days of pre-rally events

followed by five more days of official Bike Week events. During those

10 days, members of our newly-created EMR group went on four

separate charity rides.

The first three rides were to raise money for cancer research and the

final one was to raise money for victims of child abuse. That ride,

the Child Empowerment Ride, was hosted and led by two actors

from the TV show Sons

of Anarchy. I volunteered

at that event and, while

I was exhausted from

directing traffic for 2,500

motorcyclists for four

hours, it was a feeling

like no other to do

something so worthwhile

and important. It was a

cause we all cared about

deeply as evidenced by

the number of bikers that

had volunteered to help

out that day.

Anyone who saw

the thousands of

motorcyclists all staged

in one huge area, all

there to help children

who suffer from abuse,

couldn’t help but be

moved. And when the

moment came for all

to start their engines,

the rumbling of 2,500 motorcycles was so loud that people from

everywhere around stopped and watched. The motorcyclists poured

out of the parking lot for five minutes straight, led by the Sons of

Anarchy actors, onto the loop 101, which was shut down by the

DPS officers specifically for this event. They all rode to Westworld

where they met up with the actors and shared in the pride of raising

money for such an important cause. The EMR Motorcycle Riding

Group was proud to participate in these events, and will surely be

involved again in more charity rides in the future.

Zumba for All AgesBy Suzy Dee

I teach the Zumba classes at Estrella because I have a passion for fitness and for the program. The support system for Zumba instructors is also unbelievable. I

started teaching Zumba in 1983 and became Ace Certified in 1993. I later became a Drums Alive instructor in 2000. I spent 20 years working in professional theater, so I do know a thing or two about performing. I guess that is another reason why I enjoy Zumba so much, because it fills that performance need in me.

If you are thinking about toning up, losing weight, staying in shape, getting active, doing some dancing and/or getting with a fabulous group of people, come to my Zumba classes. I have classes on Tuesday mornings at 10am, Thursday mornings at 10:30am and Saturday mornings at 8am. My classes are only $4.00 per class. It does not make any difference if you are 6 or 106, it is never too late to exercise. Exercise does not have to be grueling…just ask the Zumba ladies. In fact you don’t have to ask them, just listen outside the door some Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday morning and you will hear them. There is a lot of screaming going on. They are screams for joy... Come join us!

This is what Estrella residents are saying about Zumba.

“Zumba is fun and doesn’t seem like exercise.”

“Zumba is a good cardio workout and a good mood filter.”

“Suzy makes it fun for everyone; you do not realize you are working out.”

“Friendly people and modifications for all fitness levels…I take the classes whenever I’m in town!”

“50 minutes of utter joy being just your silly self. I love coming here for Zumba.”

“It’s fun and keeps me energized the entire day!”

“If you need to increase your heart health program...this is it!”

“Fun and very easy to follow...even if you have two left feet!”

“I am a former dancer. Because of an unfortunate incident, I was told I would never dance again, but Zumba changed that.”

“Zumba is like a dance club without the alcohol!”

to be soaking in the sunshine instead of shoving holiday snow! Please join us for the December 10, 2013 book club at 10 a.m. at the Starpointe Residents Club. We are a friendly group and meet the second Wednesday of the month. Check in at the desk and bring your coffee. This is a great place to talk about books, meet old friends or make new ones.

This month we will be discussing “This Year It Will Be Different,” by Maeve Binchy. It is a delightful collection of Christmas-centered tales. This collection of short stories is as refreshing as a cup of warm tea on a cool day. Come prepared to share which was your favorite story!

Is one of your 2014 goals to become more widely read? For those who have read along with the Estrella Book Club during 2013, we have read twelve novels that have enriched

our minds and souls. Because of the different books we have read and discussed, we have gained much insight in many different views. We have selected a diverse and interesting reading list for 2014. Won’t you join us?

If you need a head start on the January read, it is, “Stolen Years: 20 Years in a Desert Jail” by Malika Oufkir.

Looking forward to seeing you on December 10th at our meeting. Happy reading and happy holidays from the Estrella Book Club!

A Year to CelebrateShared by Estrella Resident Jennifer Barber

18 | DECEMBER 2013 | LIFE IN ESTRELLA

As we gear up for the busy holiday season, Life in Estrella magazine reflects on the highlights of 2013.

The official community magazine of Estrella rolled out its first issue in January 2013. Community Manager Lisa Lundskow tackled the much-needed maintenance projects throughout Estrella. Today as you walk or bike throughout our oasis, you’ll notice a fresh coat of paint, refurbished ornamental lights, and improved landscaping.

15-year-old Taylor Campbell touched our hearts in February. The inspiring Estrella teen underwent various heart procedures as a child and manages to maintain an active lifestyle. He’s a high school soccer star who runs and skateboards to keep fit.

March brought us a fantastic feature story on Estrella’s trails. As a resident, I must say we have some of the most beautiful trails and views in the state. Grab your camera and check out the “Stop and Smell the Flowers” locations along the Estrella loop.

My favorite section in April’s edition is the scrapbook. I may be a little biased, but our community has super cute kiddos. Mary Ann Brungardt nailed it when she wrote, “Our Pre-Schooner Club is one of Starpointe’s best-kept secrets!”

Many people think Arizonans spend summers indoors. Not in Estrella! Summer issues focused on Estrella’s top-notch amenities. My family spent our ninth summer here this year. We still get a kick out of the Big Dipper at the StarSplash WaterPark!

In August, we showcased Estrella’s schools. Principals, teachers, staff, and parents work together to make our elementary schools great learning environments for students. All of our

schools need volunteers and it’s never too late to get involved.

This fall, we met cancer survivor Judy Gauvin and her husband Jeff. I’m honored to be volunteering for their new organization called the Estrella Cancer Crusaders. The Gauvins hosted an inaugural community walk in October. Like many of Estrella’s residents, they’re wonderful people working for a great cause.

Estrella is proud to be home to dozens of active military families and veterans.  In November, we sent out a special salute to these courageous men and women. We cannot thank these brave and honorable residents enough for their service.  Patriotism can be found throughout Estrella.  As you drive through the community, look up at the tops of our foothills.  Odds are you’ll see an American flag gracing the peaks.

We’re certain 2014 will bring new stories of hope, progress, and success. Until then, we wish you a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season!

Salute our Troops–An Arizona ConnectionBy Shirley Robertson and Darleen Deal

>>>cElEBRATiNG ESTREllA

LIFEINESTRELLA.COM | DECEMBER 2013 | 19

Estrella was adorned with more than 1000 people of all ages to honor our military

on Saturday, November 9, 2013 for the ‘Salute Our Troops’ 10k Run – 5k Walk/Run and Family Fun Run. As preparations were underway for this event, there was a tremendous amount of brainstorming. In the midst of the brainstorming, ideas of creating a piece of art that serves as a visual representation of the direct connection between the residents of Goodyear and the US Military became a great possibility.

To take this vision to the next level, the Estrella Foothills High School Art Department (EFHS), under the direction of Darleen Deal, Arts Instructor, and Dr. Leslie Standerfer, Principal of EFHS, took on the challenge to make this possible with donations from CCMC; Guylene Ozlanski, Estrella resident and City of Goodyear employee; Debra Goley, Estrella resident and member of The Creative Arts Academy in Goodyear; and Karen Gallo & Frank Williams, Estrella residents and members of Estrella Arts Council.

EFHS Art students drew the black outline of the soldier and started filling in the white areas with different color dauber dots. Each dot represents a different group of family members (including in-laws) and/or friends who have served or are currently serving in the military i.e. – green represents grandparents; blue represents parents; teal for aunts/uncles; etc. This magnificent work of art stands 60” x 72”.

When Darleen was approached about this project she was concerned that it would be a challenge to get a decent collection of Art work from her students that would not only be a visually pleasing piece honoring our troops and demonstrating

their talents, but also having a decent amount of participation. The idea of having student work displayed at various community events sounds exciting, but at a high school level (and with “Beginning Art” students – which comprise the bulk of this semester’s classes) Darleen ran into a few challenges.

She found out that many teenagers are hypercritical of themselves and are very hesitant about displaying anything that might receive criticism from others. Many of them have a lot on their plates and these extracurricular projects become yet another stressful project for them to complete, while those that may have more time on their hands don’t want to work on anything if they don’t have to. After all- they’re teenagers. The majority of them, however, do like the idea of creating something that will pay tribute to a cause or a group, such as our military. Especially since most have friends and/or family members who have been or are a part of the military.

Future group projects are underway for Darleen and the students of EFHS Arts Department.

Trail ThoughtsBy the Estrella Trails Committee

>>>cElEBRATiNG ESTREllA

20 | DECEMBER 2013 | LIFE IN ESTRELLA

TrAiL LOVE There is a lot of work that goes into getting a trail put in. To protect our investment and protect the environment, please consider staying single file when the trail is only as wide as your shoulders. This keeps the trail narrow and more visually appealing. Also, big foot stomper, please stay on designated trails. When folks make their own trail, typically to get to the top of something, they often don’t think of the consequences of the “new trail” they are putting in. Water will always find the path of least resistance and eventually it will create a mess!

TrAiL COurTESy Our community loves dogs! We want you and your pooch to have many bonding moments on our trails, so we have provided some doggy bag dispensers at some trailheads. We encourage you to use them and please, pack them out. If you don’t, then we have a plastic bag and a mess!

JuST WhErE ArE ThOSE TrAiLS? Do you know that there is an 11.96 mile trail around Estrella? It is called the Estrella Loop! If you go to www.lifeinestrella.com and look under “Estrella Amenities” you will find a map of our trails. Click on “Trails in Estrella” tab. We promise to do a better job keeping these maps up-to-date. 95% of the Estrella Loop is marked!

There are several nodes where you can get on a trail. Let’s start with Starpointe. Just cross the street on San Gabriel and you will see trail signs on both sides of the road. Also, if you know where the Corgett or Lum Wash trails are, they can lead you to more trails. Up and over Westar Hill… no problem, we have a trail there too!

Another main node is the Estrella Community Park by the High School. If you walk down to the end of the sidewalk, in between the ball fields, you can get on a trail that will take you underneath the power line. You

can go either way at that point to get on a trail. You can also find “Park Avenue Trail” that takes you to the fence line between our community and Estrella Mountain Regional Park. There is now an opening in the fence line to go into the Park. This is a fee area, so please bring $2 for a day pass. There are instructions at the entrance. As a side note, the City of Goodyear and local volunteers are going to build a bike park on the north side of the soccer and ball fields. This promises to be fun for the whole family! There will be more to follow.

SuGGESTiONS Or quESTiONSIf you have any suggestions or questions, please contact me, Kim Doud at [email protected]. We welcome you to attend our meetings scheduled for the last Wednesday of each month at Starpointe starting at 5pm. Happy Trails To You!

It is hard to believe that we are to December, and the fall semester is almost over.

Soon we will be on winter break and then into the second half of the school year. As I think back

on this year, I am proud of the students and staff of Estrella Foothills and all of the positive things they have done thus far this year.

Two students, Michael Ragone and Connor Moore, have been named National Merit Semi-finalists. The Drama Club has received recognition from the United Blood Services for the blood drives they have hosted. The Interact Club participated in Make a Difference Day painting fire hydrants around the city – a yearly tradition for them. Art Club participated in the Salute Our Troops 5K by providing artwork to honor our Veterans. The Culinary Arts program has hosted events for retirees in nearby communities. The Career and Technical Education Student Organizations have all attended fall leadership conferences. The football, swim, and cross country teams all had athletes qualify for and participate in postseason play. The Pom team placed 5th at a state qualifier event and will compete again in January. Our Fine Arts students are all preparing for performances that will take place prior to winter break. And,

almost every club and student organization on campus has done some part to participate in our Wolves Helping Wolves program where we find ways to help students, staff, and families in need.

I am tired just thinking about all that has gone on over the past four months – and I know what I have listed is only a fraction of the good that has happened. And, this is all in addition to the academic classes students attend every day.

As a community, we have an ethical obligation to ensure that the youth of today are given the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to grow and develop into the leaders of tomorrow. I ask that when we see young people doing the things that we want them to do that we take the time to let them know that they doing the right things and making a positive difference. And, if you are so inclined, take the time to email me the good things that they do so I can take time to let them know that the good they are doing is noticed.

One of my favorite things to do as the Principal is to stand outside at dismissal time on an early release day, a Friday afternoon, or the day before an extended vacation and remind the students to “stay safe and make good choices!” I love the reactions on their faces as they respond back that they will, and mean it as they say it.

During this season as we think about Christmas and the joy this holiday brings, our thoughts turn to how we might bring

joy to others. It is in this spirit that Estrella Mountain Preschool is honored once again to be partnering with The Pajama Program to host a Pajama Drive for warm comfortable PJs that can be given to local children in need. The Pajama Program gives new pajamas and books to children at local group homes and shelters. Many of these children have been abused or abandoned, and have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in with a story at bedtime.

Last year, the Pajama Program received requests for over 4,000 PJs from Phoenix area shelters and group homes. To kick-off our Pajama Drive, Estrella Mountain Preschool will be holding a pajama party! The students will be coming to school in their PJs, wrapping their donated pajamas and making a little prayer to go with them.

If you would like to help make a child feel warm

and cared for during the holidays, please bring a new set of PJs sizes infant to teen to Estrella Mountain Church or Preschool by Thursday, December 12th. For every set of pajamas collected, Scholastic will provide a child with a new book. The preschool is located at 10485 S. Estrella Parkway on the church campus.  For questions or further information, please contact Lisa Tucker at (623) 476-5578.

Blessings for a wonderful Christmas!

‘Tis the Season: To protect Yourself From CrimeBy LIsa Kutis, PIO, Goodyear Police Department

Goodyear one of eight u.S. Cities Selected for Alliance for Innovation AcademyBy Georgia Lord, Mayor, City of Goodyear

In the months ahead, the City of Goodyear will have the chance to learn about best practices and strategies to integrate innovation in city operations, showcase and share its

innovative methods and efficiencies, and learn from experiences in other cities while participating among a select group of cities as a member of the Alliance for Innovation’s Spring 2014 Innovation Academy.

In October, Goodyear was one of eight U.S. cities selected by the Tempe-based Alliance for Innovation to participate in the Spring 2014 Innovation Academy. The Alliance is an organization which partners with Arizona State University and the International City/County Manager’s Association to promote innovation in local government. Other cities in the 2014 academy include Austin, Texas; Gainesville, Florida; Glenview, Illinois; Knoxville, Tennessee; Nevada County, California, Palo Alto, California and Sparks, Nevada.

This puts us in a league with some of the most dynamic cities and counties in the country. We’re excited about the opportunity and confident it will challenge us to be even more inventive.

We will have a team of 14 employees representing nine different city departments learning, sharing information and mentoring other city employees through the course of the academy. The representatives from each city will take back what they learn and share it with their cities.

I am proud to say that our City is known for implementing innovative practices such as its priority-based budgeting, performance measures, implementing its own medical clinic to help cut healthcare costs and encouraging creativity and entrepreneurship within the business community.

During the course of the academy, representatives from each city will meet for eight sessions addressing various topics. Our goal is to continue improving operations to best serve our residents and businesses.

It’s a great stepping tool to take us to the next level. I’m excited to see where it goes from there.

We are putting on our poodle skirts and greasing back our hair so that we can hop back to the 1950s for a good ‘ole fashioned Sock Hop complete with a live band and a car show by the Estrella Mountain Car Club.

‘That Kool Band’ will be out to perform a two hour show that is sure to have you tapping your toes or dancing up a storm. They will be bringing us their show titled ‘At the Hop,’ a musi-cal tribute to some of the greatest Rock & Roll stars of the ‘50s and ‘60s including ‘The Beach Boys,’ ‘The Beatles,’ ‘Dion and the Belmonts,’ and many, many more. They preformed here in Estrella last May and many of those that attended have said they put on a great show so you don’t want to miss them.

Members of the Estrella Mountain Car club will be displaying some of their hot rods and unique car collections at the event, too. This club is a group of 30 residents and guests whose members own over 40 unique automobiles. The years and models of these cars range from current convertibles to exotic imports to restored hotrods. You don’t have to be a member of the Estrella Mountain Car Club to show off your car. If you have a unique or classic car that you would like to display at the event there will be spaces in the parking lot reserved for you to show off your cars, too.

Dinner will include a classic menu of burgers, chips, and side salads catered by Dad’s Catering. The evening’s signature

McDonald’s - A New Addition to the Estrella CommunityBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager

O n July 23, 2013, the Estrella community was enlightened about

the presentation presented by Derrick & Darian Mellon, brothers who own seventeen West Valley McDonald’s and will open Estrella’s McDonald’s this fall. Most people think of McDonald’s as a place to eat that offers convenience, variety and value, which the Mellon brothers want people to remember about McDonald’s, but there is more to McDonald’s that most people do not know.

• Community commitment and economic impact

• Food quality, choice and nutrition

• People and opportunity

As the biggest and most recognized quick-serve restaurant in the industry, McDonald’s has become a “poster child” for many causes big and small. The Estrella McDonald’s is:

• Focused on local communities and lending a caring hand to our neighbors

• Dedicated to providing new menu choices, nutrition information and food quality that Estrella demands

• Committed to providing opportunities for their employees

• Ready to serve the local community and contributing to charitable causes

The Mellon brothers bring a long history

>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe

and commitment to the tax base and economic development of the West Valley as follows:

• In Goodyear they employ over 250 employees

• Local sales over $10 million last year

• Huge share of the sales pays in state, county and local taxes

• The tax revenues grow and sustain the communities in which they do business

In addition they support many charities including the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Derrick & Darian Mellon are committed to support the Estrella community for many generations to come, so please stop by their new facility and welcome them to our community.

It’s Time for the Estrella Annual MeetingBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager

I t’s that time of year again; It’s time for the Estrella Annual Meeting. This meeting is not

only a business meeting, but a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the Estrella Community over the past year. It is bound to be quite a celebration with a Big Top theme and so many things for the community to be proud of.

The evening will begin with a vendor reception starting at 5:30pm. Community partners, vendors, and friends of the community will gather in front of

the performing Arts Center at Estrella Foothills High School to meet and greet with residents. The Estrella Foothills High School Culinary Class will be offering tastings of some of their fantastic culinary creations. There will be games to help you win more raffle tickets to increase your odds of winning one of the over 50 prizes we will be giving away later in the evening.

The meetings portion of the evening will begin with the Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard presenting the flag and a member of the Goodyear Police Department leading us in the National Anthem.

>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe

Then the Estrella Community Association and the Villages of Estrella Community Association will hold their business meeting. This meeting will also be the final step in electing two new resident board members for The Villages Community Association. The nominating committee made up of resident volunteers accepted applications from residents interested in running for this volunteer position in July and August and the ballots were sent out to each voting member of the VCA.

After the business meetings and the election of the new resident board members, there will be community updates including a financial report. There will also be updates from the management company, CCMC, as well as, the Developer, Newland Communities. We will also celebrate the many accomplishments of all our resident volunteers. From the residents that serve on Estrella’s five Committees that have dedicated numerous hours to help ensure that this community is functioning as successfully as possible to the event volunteers that make sure that the residents of Estrella have a fun way to come together and connect. Every resident volunteer is important and has contributed to the community’s accomplishments this year. I hope to see everyone on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm applauding your fellow residents for their hard work and celebrating all the great things that are happening in your community. Plus there will be over $4,000 worth of donated prizes given away and you have to be present to win!

Art: A Path to Creative DiscoveryBy Phyllis Hill, CDP, Senior Consultant, The Creative Arts Academy

P icasso, Rembrandt, Monet . . . When many of us think of art, we may think of Monet’s painting “Impression Sunrise,” hanging on a museum wall, or a sculpture

such as Di Vinci’s “David,” on display. The mention of art may evoke images of marble pillars, ancient expressions of periods of time, odd shapes of clay or metal reflective of a more modern twist. But art is more than an end product on display; art is a path to creative discovery.

Most aspiring artists will never attain the fame of Picasso and Rembrandt, but they do not let this stop them from engaging their creative value, for the creative process inspires the soul, entertains the mind and encourages artistic expression. Expressions of creativity are limitless, from paper to canvas, brick walls to drywall, from wood trusses to water-filled shapes, flowers to planets. Creativity spurs us down the path of discovery and broadens our relationship with texture, color, time, light, sound, volume, size, and shape. Art brings all of these elements together to increase our understanding and enhance our experience in the world around us.

You can engage your creative value. Yes, you have creativity eagerly waiting to draw you into a delightful experience of discovery! No need for reserve or embarrassment; the discovery of creativity will inspire your own style of expression. It is the process of discovery that holds great value.

There are many opportunities to engage your creative side right here in Estrella. The Creative Arts Academy provides classes for those who dare to discover. Approaching this fall is Coffee and Canvas, September 13, 2013 and Family Canvas, November 2, 2013. Visit www.createu.org for class registration, time and place or send an email to [email protected] for more information. Come and experience the warmth of community in an inspirational setting over a delightful cup of coffee and discover your creative value!

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: CAROL RISANO OF OASIS BAGELS

Carol Risano, the owner of Oasis Bagels, welcomes each customer with a warm smile and is more than happy to share news about the great things happening in the community. More than just business owners, Carol and her husband Fred are residents who help support the community they love. Oasis is a regular sponsor of community and school events and generously donates food and gift cards as needed. When she isn’t working, Carol participates in mock interviews as part of Estrella Foothills High School’s career training program - and usually ends up hiring the students to work at her store, among the all resident staff.

“As a true ‘Mom and Pop’ business, we appreciate the community’s patronage and support and try to make a difference by giving back in any way that we can,” said Risano. “If you are healthy and able, you should always be willing to give back.”

Other ways they help out include donating the daily leftovers to a nearby homeless shelter, and Risano is a member of the City’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Oasis Bagels is located next to Safeway in Mountain Ranch Marketplace and is open seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Next time you are at Mountain Ranch Marketplace, be sure and stop by Oasis Bagels and introduce yourself to Carol. She would love to get to know all her neighbors.
