Upcoming Town Hall MeetingBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager

E strella is growing by leaps and bounds. New model homes are opening in the

community and new businesses are moving into the area. With growth comes exciting changes that the community needs to be informed about. In Estrella we are lucky enough to have multiple ways to get information out to you including this great magazine, Eblasts, www.lifeinestrella.com, TV monitors and informative public meetings. One of these informational meetings is our quarterly Town Hall meeting. We

partner with a variety of organizations to raise awareness in the community about important changes and exciting new developments.

The next Town Hall meeting will be held on Tuesday July 23rd at 6:30pm. This meeting will provide a venue for community updates for Estrella and the surrounding neighborhood. Newland Communities will provide a developer update. Newland will be discussing the growth in Estrella, new builders, and provide us a vision of the future of Estrella. Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), has

>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe

also been invited to give us an update on the 303 expansion. This expansion is leading to some significant changes in the west valley by making it possible to bring more large businesses into the area and increasing employment options for residents.

We look forward to your participation at the Town Hall Meeting and ask that you RSVP to Shirley Robertson at [email protected] to assure that we have enough seating for all attending.

T he irrigation pump station located on the Southwest corner of the North Lake delivers water to the entire community. This pump station is responsible for watering all turf and plants

throughout Estrella. Unfortunately, it has been working inconsistently since the middle of February. Over the last few months the largest motor/pump, the clay valves that regulate the water being sent out to the community, and the flow meter have all been down, repaired, and/or replaced. Each element is crucial, and when inoperable only allows unpredictable amounts of water to be pumped out. You have probably seen the turf area irrigation running during the day. This is being done to spread out the demand on the pump station to hopefully get more reliable water out.

While Management has made every attempt to repair the pump station and provide sufficient water to the turf and plants, the turf in the community has still struggled. Please be patient as we continually strive to repair all the issues. The expectation is that the pump station will be back to working 100% by the time this article is read.

On a positive note, the pump station has been approved by the Board for replacement. Due to the antiquity of the pump station, and the ongoing required maintenance expenses, the Board has supported Management’s recommendation to replace the existing pump station. The current goal is to evaluate the existing irrigation system to determine the correct size of the new pump station. Once

this analysis is performed, in the next four to six months, a pump station will be chosen and installed. The timing of this would be perfect, allowing the replacement of the pump station to be during the cooler months when water demand is the lowest. Please stay in tune to EBLASTS, website and TV monitor updates, or attend an EJC Board of Directors meeting for the most recent status.

Starpointe Maintenance Update by Dan Castillo, Maintenance Coordinator

In an effort to ensure the safety of all residents and guests who utilize the Starpointe Residents Club and WaterPark, the Club’s maintenance staff are continuously trained in all areas of operat-ing Starpointe facility in a safe manner, while keeping Starpointe looking great. Recently our maintenance staff attended a pool training class to assist in maintaining proper pool chemicals, pool equipment, as well as emergency response training for any pool issues that could occur. Training requires a continuous hands on approach by discussing various scenarios that could occur and occasionally simulating and coaching the employees through equipment malfunctions.

July Meetings

T he Nominating Committee is seeking candidates wishing to serve on the Board. The Villages at Estrella Mountain Ranch Community Association (VCA) will be electing two

residents to the Board of Directors in September. As a Board Member, you will be representing your community in a key leadership position. Although you may have prior experience serving on one or more boards in either the business world or non-profit organizations, there are certain aspects of community association governance which are quite unique.

Being a Board Member is a volunteer position. The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of all common areas and any amenities located within your commu-nity. The primary job of the Board is to stay connected to and be representative of the entire community which they represent.

The Board of Directors meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Executive Sessions start at 5:30 PM and the Board

meetings begin at 6:30 PM, typically lasting a couple hours.

Weathering the Summer StormsBy Jim Potts, Horticulturist

I f we are fortunate, the arrival of summer rains will materialize

this month, bringing much relief to plants, animals and us. With

increased wind and storms, check your tree staking and re-

adjust if necessary. Remember staking should only be a temporary

solution to allow the tree to establish its root system. Tree staking

should be done only when necessary and stakes should be removed

after one or two growing seasons.

Lightly prune native and desert-adapted trees to avoid breakage

during the summer thunderstorms in July and August if needed. Do

not prune excessively as this will expose the tree trunk to the sun

causing it to sunburn.

You may have noticed the rock mulch (granite and cobble) being

installed in sections of your community, this is a multiyear project

to refresh the entire community. Starting last year, your Landscape

Committee, Management team and Four Peaks Landscape began

working on a multiyear plan to replenish many of the Landscape

assets in your community. Priorities of where to begin were

established after many hours of discussion between the committee

members, with a recommendation presented to Management.

>>> SNIppeTS

The Granite project is

projected to refresh all

of the common area

rock ground cover over

the next 12 years. The

2013 phase of this rock

enhancement project

will refresh about 25%

of Star Tower, all Grand Marquee Entrances, Bougainvillea Park, and

Elliot Rd: from the Shell station west to the limits of Estrella. 2014

will bring new granite to as much of the priority areas as the annual

budget allows and will continue for many years to come.

The areas selected in order of priority are;

• Starpointe & Star Tower

• Grand Marquee Entrances (completed in 2013)

• Lakes/Parks (North and South)

• Major Right of Ways including Entry Monuments

• Elliot (to be completed in 2013)

• Westar

• Calistoga

• Estrella Parkway

• Golf Club Drive

H ave you ever seen a really cool car and wonder “who owns that?” Or perhaps you have seen an interesting auto driving around Estrella recently and wondered what it would be

like to look inside, what it has under the hood or how many hours it took to get it into that condition? Let me introduce you to the EMCC (Estrella Mountain Car Club).

Since our inception by three enthusiasts many years ago, the club has grown to more than 30 members who own more than 40 unique autos. Years and models range from current convertibles to exotic imports to restorations of early (and very early) hot rods.

While our name starts with “Estrella” we have a few members who live down the hill. We are all focused on the same things: to have fun, contribute back to our community and promote an appreciation and enthusiasm for unique cars and trucks.

Some of our recent 2013 activities include:

• Participating in the Tale of Two Cities Parade. This is an event that supports both Avondale and Goodyear.

• In March, we attended Estrella’s Eggstravaganza event. Perhaps you may have seen us there...

• Several members also attended the Car Show at the Lutheran Unity Church to help raise funds to send kids to summer camp.

• Most recently, there was a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall as it traveled through Buckeye.

Estrella Mountain Car Club Takes the RoadBy EMCC Members

>>>ClubS

• Annually, the Club hosts a barbecue at South Lake which is typically one of our most attended events. Who would have thought “car people” like to eat?

Our regular meetings are at Starpointe (9:00 am) on the Second Saturday of the month. After the June 8th meeting we were joined by our spouses and went to lunch at the Martin Automotive Museum. Generally speaking, we look for activities & events which will enable us to use our cars to benefit the community and/or educate the members on local attractions. As previously stated, our intention is to grow a greater presence and appreciation for “special vehicles.”

With a successful (short) trip within the city behind us (this side of I-17) and no major car troubles to contend with, we are looking to create a schedule for our next adventures in the fall. Ideally, we will have a monthly “outing”. Since some of our cars are over 50 years old, they don’t do so well in the heat and altitudes. That’s another reason we take summers off. If you have a destination suggestion or somewhere that might be fun for a dozen (or so) old and unique cars to visit with their owners, please let us know! It must be a place that has food (nearby). Our group doesn’t travel anywhere on an empty stomach.

As we are a “social group” and enjoy meeting new people, on the 4th Saturday we have an impromptu car show at Safeway (across the street from Starpointe) at 8:00 AM. We call this event CC&C (Cars, Coffee & Conversation). Stop by and visit. We love to talk about our cars!

Community

Page 19: Life In Estrella - July 2013

Yes, we have several members that are from Canada. Because of that and the fact that most of us all have air conditioning in our homes, we typically forego our Saturday meetings in July and August. It gets a bit too warm to stand around in a parking lot for 3 hours on a Saturday morning. As such, if you miss us in June, please look for us to appear in September at Starpointe on the 2nd Saturday for our meeting and back at Safeway on the 4th Saturday of the month.

You may see our flyers in local businesses or you can look for us on the www.LifeInEstrella.com website under “Groups”. We’re constantly looking to expand our membership, so if you have a special car (or just an interested in “car stuff”) please contact us or drop by a meeting.

Contact our club at:

• President, Rick Kitchens: 623-932-1246 / [email protected]

• Vice President, Bob Farrell: 623-866-8135 / [email protected]

• Activities Director, Ken Kiko: 623-256-5890 / [email protected]

•Membership Director, Bob Snedaker: 623-203-9795 / [email protected]

As of this magazine’s publication, our next event will be on Saturday, June 27th, (4th Saturday of the month) in the Safeway parking lot at 8a.m. Come join us for CC&C! We’d love to meet you.

Travel Club: A Cool Getaway for Valley ResidentsBy Stewart Rein

W hen it gets hot in the Valley, those who can, look for mini vacations and one nearby spot is our neighboring state of New Mexico. Why not take a mini vacation and visit

Albuquerque?

Starting from Estrella, you can arrive in Flagstaff in less than three hours and in that time, you will go from about 950’ above sea level to almost 7,000’ above sea level. I find Flag to be a great place to stop for lunch and take a walk around the downtown streets visiting the art galleries and interesting shops. Then it’s back in the car for the 4-1/2 hour drive along I-40 to Albuquerque. If you have the time, you can stop to view Meteor Crater along the way. Once you enter New Mexico, the scenery becomes quite stunning and remains so all the way to Albuquerque. Also along the way is the Acoma Pueblo.

Albuquerque sits at 5,000 ft above sea level and has a comfortable climate year round. It has accommodations at all price points. Restaurants of every kind are abundant in this city. Most people have heard of Old Town and I recommend allowing an hour or two to walk around, check out the shops, look at handiwork of the native craftspeople, and when open, visit San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church across the central square. I have enjoyed lunch at several of the restaurants in this quarter and make that a regular part of my visit. Albuquerque has a beautiful botanical garden, and within walking distance of Old Town are the city’s major museums. If you

want to exercise a bit, there are walking/biking paths along the Rio Grande River, known locally as the Paseo del Bosque. On the west side of the river, you should visit Petroglyph National Monument. There are several trails here that wind around one of the largest concentrations of petroglyphs in the world. Finally, for the not so timid, there is the Sandia Peak Tramway that will take you high up in the mountains on the east side of town. From the top, you are literally getting a birds-eye view of the entire city and surrounding area. Finally, no trip to Albuquerque is complete without a drive along Albuquerque’s portion of Route 55. It cuts east and west through the entire city. There’s plenty of neon and old style motels, as well as the University of New Mexico and trendy and interesting neighborhoods and shops as well.

If you are interested in joining the Travel Club, contact Judy Northrop at [email protected] or Judy Gaede at [email protected] or join our meetings on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 11am at Starpointe. The Estrella Travel Club…We are always on the go!

Page 20: Life In Estrella - July 2013

I f you’re interested in shooting but tend to shy away from weaponry, you may want to set your sights on the Estrella Photo Group.

Founded in 2006, the semi-competitive group is made up of about 30 Estrella residents who share a common interest in digital photography. Their cameras--from $5,000 pro models to $300 point-and-shoots--are as varied as their respective skill levels, which range from advanced and very serious amateurs, to those just getting started.

The group meets twice monthly. On the first Thursday of each month, members meet at the Starpointe Residents club to display their photos that best meet that month’s theme. In 2013, monthly themes include black and white, still life, graffiti, waterfalls, sports and saguaro cactus. At the completion of the Thursday meeting, members select the top photographs, which will be displayed at Oasis Bagels. All members’ photos also are displayed at the Estrella Family Breakfast/Coffee Social at Starpointe the following morning.

An education meeting is held on the third Wednesday of each month. This is an opportunity for the less advanced shooters to learn a few tricks of the trade from the more experienced shutterbugs. Recent topics include sports photography, studio lighting and Photoshop techniques. In May, members had the opportunity to sharpen their portraiture skills while working with a live model.

Kathy Brinkman’s reasons for joining the Photo Group may be typical of its membership.

Car with Cigarette

“I joined the group because I wanted to hone my photography skills,” she said. “Photography is a wonderful art form because it lets you express yourself and share the world around you. And the friendly competition pushes me to put out a better final product every month. It’s a great place to hone my skills. I know my photography has improved greatly since I’ve been a member.”

Photography in EstrellaBy The Estrella Photo Group

W e are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area. Opportunities

for beautiful photographs abound with cactus, mountains, sunsets, lakes, wildlife and any other subject that captures the mind of the photographer.

Photography has changed at an incredible pace in the last ten

years. Ten or twelve years ago professional photographers were still debating whether digital photography could ever produce photos with the quality of film. Initially, DSLR’s started out with six megapixels. Now professional DSLR’s are at 24 megapixels and above. Today our smart phones have six to eight megapixels.

With camera raw, photographers are now using the digital dark room to tweak their photos or software such as Photoshop, Aperture and others to utilize artistic means to demonstrate their vision. Currently, there are discussions as to whether some of the more artistic visions of photographers are actually photography. Whether you consider them to be photos or art we might all agree that all good photography whether digitally manipulated or not, must begin with a good photo. To that end, good photographs begin with the basics of good photography, including composition, exposure and lighting.

One can digitally enhance a photograph, however, a poor photo will never become a great photo.

The Estrella Photo Group consists of Estrella residents who enjoy learning about and sharing photos. We are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera oriented. On the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at Starpointe Residence Club we display our photos in a fine art format. Four photos are selected by our members to be displayed at Oasis Bagels. Photos are also displayed the following Friday morning at the Estrella Family Breakfast/Coffee Social.

On the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at Starpointe we hold education meetings on a variety of topics. These discussions include photography techniques, getting the most from your camera, photo printing, framing, Photoshop editing and other member suggested topics.

Our goal is to continue to learn to be better photographers, producing quality photographic work and having fun as a group who enjoys sharing our imagination and experiences.

T his recipe is perfect for summer picnics or to take to a summer outing. I hope you enjoy it as much

as my family does.

Ingredients

• 2 cups Strawberries washed, hulled and sliced

in half

• 2 cups Blackberries washed

• 2 cups Raspberries washed

• 2 cups Blueberries washed

• ½ cup granulated sugar, plus a little more to sprinkle on top

• ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

• ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

• 2 tablespoons cornstarch

• ½ lemon, juiced

• Melted butter

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, combine berries with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch and lemon juice. Stir

gently to combine. Spread berry mixture out on an oblong glass pan. Drop spoonfuls of the blueberry dough mixture evenly over the top of the fruit, then drizzle the surface with melted butter and sprinkle some sugar on top. Set on a cookie sheet and bake for 25 to 35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the fruit juices bubbling.

Cool for 15 minutes before serving. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Blueberry Topping

• 2 cups unbleached flour, plus more for rolling berries

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1/3 cup sugar

• ¼ cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut in chunks

• 3/4 cup buttermilk or cream

• 1 egg

• 1 pint fresh blueberries or raspberries

In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar; mix thoroughly. Cut in butter using a pastry blender or lightly with your food processor or mixer. The butter pieces should be coated with flour and resemble crumbs.

In another bowl, mix buttermilk and egg together, and then add to the flour mixture. Mix just to integrate it. Do not overwork the dough or it will get tough. Roll blueberries in flour to coat, this will help prevent the fruit from sinking to the bottom of the dough mixture. Fold the blueberries into batter, being careful not to break the berries.

Bake the cobbler as stated above.

D eciding what to read next? Why not join The Estrella Book Club for a lively discussion? Our July book selection is Detroit: An American

Autopsy by Charlie LeDuff. Charlie LeDuff is a former New York Times reporter and a current on-air reporter in Detroit. LeDuff writes a gritty story about Detroit including the death of his own streetwalking sister. Gritty and bleak at times but a compelling view of the fall of a great city in America.

Detroit: An American Autopsy is a recent recommended read by the Arizona Republic. Randy Cordova says the author has an “in-your-face reporting and colorful style.” LeDuff was asked in an interview, “What do you want people to take from the book?” LeDuff responds, “There’s a couple of things. This is my family and this is our record. This is a history of a town that is sorely lacking.”

Why not read this book and join us in July? The Estrella Book Club meets at the Starpointe Residents Club the second Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. The July date is Wednesday, July 10 at 10 a.m.

The July selection is sure to bring much discussion about Detroit, crime, families, reporters, and possibly lesson or two we can take away from this story. We would love to hear your point of view. Please join us!

T he Stage calls….and these three siblings answer that call.

Audra (13), Jared (12) and Brooke (10) Barbee all have a

passion for performing on the stage. It all started when they

were very young and would watch musicals. They loved to act them

out afterwards: singing, dancing and acting out the parts. Their

parents also took them to a few plays such as Annie, Beauty and

the Beast and The Lion King. They just fell in love with all aspects:

costumes, sets, characters, singing and choreography.

Two key people have been instrumental in steering the Barbee

children on their acting journey: Mrs. Kristin Caraway, who is a

teacher, writer, playwright, director and friend, first introduced the

Barbees to Mrs. Teresa Tally, who runs Stage Struck Inc. a kids’

Musical Theater company in Surprise, AZ. The three siblings began

taking singing lessons with Mrs. Tally, and then they made their

stage debut with Stage Struck and The Creative Arts Academy

here at Estrella Mountain Church the summer of 2011. They have

been performing with Stage Struck and have been part of the drama

club at school for the past two years and love it! It has been such

a positive experience and a big confidence builder for all three of

them. They are all very comfortable up on the stage. They have

made some very good friends and all three say they love performing

on the stage. Audra and Jared have both expressed that they would

someday like to perform on Broadway. Brooke is just enjoying the

fun of it all for now.

All three children attend The Odyssey Preparatory Academy where

both Mrs. Tally and Mrs. Caraway teach and run the Drama Dept.

Estrella: What Are YOU Doing this Summer?By Estrella Residents

They have just finished a successful sold out run of Willy Wonka

Jr. and performed a Summer Musical Theater Camp taking place

at The Odyssey. For more information on the camp, go to www.

stagestruck.com.

Recently, Audra and Jared auditioned and were selected to travel to

London, England with a small Troupe from school to perform and

take part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival in November. They

will be performing a shortened version of Shakespeare’s Taming of

the Shrew. This will be the first time a U.S. school has been invited

to participate! What a great honor it will be!

Mom and Dad are very excited and proud of them. It will be an

amazing experience that will certainly last a lifetime. Break a leg!

I will be doing a lot of swimming this summer. I am already helping

my mom teach swim lessons and I just joined the Goodyear

swim team. I expect to have lots of fun at my little brother

Jackson’s 3rd birthday party. He is planning to have a Monster’s Inc.

pool party.

We are going on vacation to the beach in Prince Edwards Island,

Canada. My daddy will be golfing some there too. We also get to

visit Niagara Falls, Toronto, and Montreal. In Montreal we are going

to visit a lot of nice places because it’s beautiful there and the

weather is great.

Lastly, I am going to be getting ready for Kindergarten at Westar

Elementary. I will be practicing my reading and writing this summer

so I get good grades. This summer is going to be great. I can’t wait!

T his summer I am going to have a blast, I’m sure. I start the summer off enrolled at the Goodyear’s swim team with the “Sharks.” I try and get as many ribbons as I can. My past

record isn’t so good but I have high hopes for this year.

Second, my family and I are going to Puerto Penasco (a.k.a Rocky Point) in Mexico for beach fun and will stay in a hotel. The hotel has a pool with a water fall. We will go swimming in the sea and then go and relax by the pool. Now that I’m old enough I’m going to ride on dirt bikes they have to rent. It is going to be so much fun.

Also, we might get to go to San Jose, California to see our cousins. It’s always fun when we visit them because they’re the best. With all these fun things and more going on in the summer I’m sure time will fly and back to school I’ll go!

T his summer I will be flying to Ohio. I am super excited because I get to see my family. Half of my family lives in Ohio and another half live in Chicago. When we get to Ohio, we

are going to check out my new summer home that my dad has been working on forever. He has spent a lot of time fixing it and now we get to see all his hard work.

The back yard is pretty big and leads into a State park. The trees are tall and the grass is green. Deer come through the park and into our backyard. We have to be careful you don’t hit them while we are driving.

While we are there, we are also going to Cedar Point. Cedar Point is about a 45minute drive from my house and it’s one of the top theme parks in the country. My dad is always trying to get me to do all of the crazy rides with him. I think I’m going to try the Magnum XL but I won’t try the Demon Drop.

I am so glad I am staying for the whole summer, because I will never run out of things to do there with my family. It’s going to be a great summer!

T his summer I am going camping with my family to Flagstaff, Arizona. I can’t wait to cook the S’mores with the family over a camp fire! We hike and play in the creek. And I also fish

with my dad. We fish for Trout.

Then I am going to a Lego camp. It is at the Estrella Mountain Church. I am a big Lego buff. I build spaceships, robots, helicopters and all sorts of stuff. I heard there are a million Legos! The finest part of Lego camp is I get to build the Legos with friends.

I will also go to San Clemente, California for my aunts wedding. There is a nice beach there and my mom says “it’s a great place to raise a family.” I might even get to go surfing!

I also can’t wait to go to Starpointe and swim at the WaterPark. I am going to hang out at the Youth Club. I love how they made it a fun place for me to be with my friends. This summer will be awesome!

W hat am I doing this summer? Scarcely a week in, I have already traveled to Mexico for the umpteenth time and am still recovering from a sunburn. Alternatively, I’ve played

with my cats, written approximately as much as I did in the most recent school year in Mr. Daugherty’s class at Estrella Elementary. I slept as much or more than a teenage girl is to be expected. Here are just a few things I’m looking forward to this summer.

On the eleventh of June, I’ll be the happiest I’ve ever been watching the “Fall Out Boy” concert with two of my best friends! In July, we are driving to the Northwest to visit family and friends.

My home before Arizona was Portland, Oregon. The ‘City of Roses’ has many charming stores such as the legendary Powell’s Bookstore, with endless floors, rooms, and shelves of every book imaginable. Portland has delectable food served in the finest of restaurants, and an atmosphere that, to me, is greater than anything else in the world.

On the drive to the Northwest, we visit somewhere different each year. This summer, we’re going to Knott’s Berry Farm and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. On the way home, we always spend a few days in Utah. My favorite things to do there are the summer activities at Snowbird Ski Resort, riding the alpine slides and zip lines. I’m also looking forward to meeting my new cousin, due on the 4th of July! I

think it’s going to be a good two months.

I t is somewhat cliché, but each of us can think of a teacher, counselor, or other school

employee that has made a difference in our life. That educator has usually made a point to check on us when we were having a bad day, helped us grasp a concept we thought we would never understand, or has motivated us to try something we didn’t know we could be successful at. That educator has put the needs of students at the forefront of decisions being made - even in

times when that amounted to personal sacrifice of time, energy, and resources.

This year, Estrella Foothills High School says goodbye to two valuable educators who are retiring after having made a difference in the lives of multiple students who have attended EFHS. The Buckeye Union High School District also says goodbye to a couple of leaders who have worked to provide opportunities to our students at EFHS.

Summertime is HereBy Dr. Leslie Standerfer, Principal

Mr. Paul Halpine has been the Head Guidance Counselor at EFHS for the past nine years. He has always encouraged our students to take appropriately rigorous courses and to do their best at whatever they do.

Mr. Jim McFetridge has been an English Teacher at EFHS for the past nine years. He has shared his passion for western literature and his appreciation for being an American with our students.

In addition to these two retirements, Dr. Beverly Hurley, who has been the Superintendent of Buckeye Union High School District for the past ten years, and Ms. Arlene McLaughlin, who has worked in the district for over 30 years and most recently as the CTE Director for the District, are retiring. Both of these women have made providing quality opportunities for students the priorities of their careers.

As we say goodbye to our retirees, we are grateful for the time and talents they shared with our students and staff while at EFHS. And we are grateful for the educators who will continue to serve the students of our community at all of our schools.

S erving on the Goodyear City Council was a dream I’ve held

since the day I rolled into town eight years ago. My dream of

serving in politics dates back to when I was in the 7th grade.

The experience was incredibly educational and rewarding. And I’m

truly honored having been selected to serve by our city council.

What I found most interesting was the fact that just 11% of

Goodyear is developed. That means we’ve got a lot of land and

opportunities up for grabs. Most of it is south of I-10 and, of course,

here in Estrella.

The reason I point this out is because I think ‘future growth’ is a

great reason for Estrella residents to get more involved in our City’s

planning.

Goodyear now has 70,775 residents. That number is expected to

continue to rise over the next several years. With this spring election

cycle, we now have two council members living south of I-10… just

one of our representatives lives here in Estrella.

It will be difficult to get another Estrella resident on the council in the

“Step Up” Estrella Residents Submitted by the City of Goodyear

near future. Due to a change in election laws, our next city council

election won’t be held until the fall of 2016.

In the last election, you may have heard some debate about diving

our city into districts. One of the triggers for our city to be divided

into voting districts is when we hit a population of 150,000 citizens.

In the meantime, Goodyear’s council members are elected at large

on a nonpartisan ballot.

So how can you make a difference now? Opportunities include

serving on a board or committee, volunteering in a variety of city

departments, or simply voting. And you always have the pleasure of

speaking at a council meeting or contacting council members about

topics that are of concern to you.

You can find out more by contacting the city at 623-932-3910. Or

visit the city’s website at http://www.ci.goodyear.az.us.

While serving on the Goodyear City Council, city staff helped me

make the most of this opportunity by allowing me to meet with

department leaders, tour city facilities, and learn all the details

about what it takes to make our city operate efficiently. I leave this

appointment with great hope for our future and confidence knowing

our leadership are working conservatively to make the best decisions

for our growing city.

I’m always open to answer your questions and I do hope see you,

my Estrella neighbors, at City Hall!

You can contact Jennifer Barber at [email protected].

>>>CITY of GoodYeAr

Editor’s Note: Estrella Resident Jennifer Barber was appointed to the Goodyear City Council in November 2012 to fill a vacancy after the passing of Councilmember Gary Gelzer. Her appointed term expired June 10, 2013. We asked her to share her thoughts about her six months in office.

S ummer is in full swing, but water safety is a year-round priority!

Arizona is the second leading state in the nation for child

drowning (Florida is first). According to Children’s Safety Zone

(http://childrensafetyzone.com/go/articles.php?category_id=36) as

of May 27th in the Valley of the Sun, there have been 42 water

related incidents this year, with 14 deaths, three of which were

children.

Water safety is as simple as ABC!

A = Adult supervision: Nothing replaces adult supervision when

children are around water. B= Barriers: Every pool should have a

fence with a self-latching, and locking gate. C= Classes: Everyone

should learn how to swim; swimming lessons are available at your

local City pool and are inexpensive. In addition, everyone should

learn CPR.

Kids Are Not Waterproof By Lisa Kutis, PIO - Goodyear Police Department

Summer is a busy and fun time of year; there are vacations, pool

parties and barbeques. However, when it comes to social gatherings

around the pool, always have a designated water watcher! The

water watcher should be a responsible adult who is designated

by a special hat, tag, or whistle, labeling them as being in charge

of watching the swimmers. Eye to eye contact with those in the

pool is essential. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking someone else is

watching the kids in the pool. Have a fun and safe summer with a

designated water watcher!
