The Annual Meeting is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the

Estrella Community over the past year. We will also review the Community’s current financial condition and outlook for the future.

The evening will start with a vendor reception at 5:30 p.m. Community partners, vendors and friends of the community will gather in front of the Performing Arts Center at Estrella Foothills High School to meet and greet with residents. The Estrella Foothills High School Culinary Class will again be preparing the refreshments and culinary creations that we are sure will be astounding.

The meeting portion of the evening will begin with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (Unit Veterans Pride Battalion) presenting the flag and Goodyear Chief of Police Jerry Geier leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, the Estrella Community Association and the Villages Community Association will hold their business meetings. These meetings will also be the final step in electing resident board members. Both ECA and VCA will be announcing new resident board members at the Annual Meeting.

The Estrella Community Association has met the criteria in their CC&Rs to transition from developer to homeowner control. The current ECA Board consists of two resident directors and will increase to four.

The Villages Community Association will elect two resident directors because the terms of the incumbents end this year.

After the business meetings and the election of the new resident board members, there will be community updates including financial reports, Management Company report (CCMC) and Developer report (Newland Communities).

We will also celebrate the many dedicated volunteers who spend numerous hours to help ensure that this community is functioning to the very highest standards and to make sure that the residents have a fun way to come together and connect through our community events. Every resident volunteer is critical to Estrella and we hope that all volunteers will attend to be acknowledged for your hard work.

We hope to see everyone on Tuesday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. celebrating all the great things that are happening in your community. Plus there will be lots of prizes given away (last year prizes were valued over $6500) and you have to be present to win.

The weather is finally getting cooler and for many of us that means more time spent

in the great outdoors. Whether your activity of choice is a game of tennis at the park, gathering the family for a BBQ at the South Lake Ramadas or taking a stroll around the lakes

to enjoy the beautiful Arizona sunrise or sunset, it is important to always bring your resident ID card with you when you leave home.

Your quarterly assessments go toward maintenance of over 500 acres of parks and open space and provide a beautiful, private refuge exclusive to you as an Estrella resident. Keeping our parks private for residents not only helps to maintain their aesthetics, but it restricts the amount of wear and tear on the equipment and helps to keep the amenities open and available for residents’ use.

You may occasionally see our Community Patrol stopping residents in a friendly manner and asking to see resident ID cards. Please be sure that at least one member of your party has their ID card available at all times while in Estrella’s common areas. Unaccompanied non-residents will be asked to leave.

The cooler weather means more four-legged friends will be out enjoying the cooler air as well. Please be sure to pack doggie waste bags to pick up after your pet. Remember that the City of Goodyear ordinance states that all pets must be on a leash no longer than 6’ in length while outside the home.

If you have any questions, please contact Robert Cruz, Estrella’s Operations Manager at 623-386-1112, or by emailing [email protected]. Community Patrol may be reached by calling 602-329-0462.

currently serves the Estrella Community as a:

• Member and Treasurer of the Estrella Community Association Board of Directors

• Estrella Budget and Finance Committee Member

• Ad Hoc Supplier Performance Evaluation Team Member

Susan has 30 years of management audit experience analyzing complex organizations, programs, contracts and budgets as well as extensive volunteer experience as a project manager and team member for numerous national/local community boards and committees. She has a Master of Public Administration degree from Seattle University.

She has served as a Voting Member or Alternate for the past six years. She was appointed to the Communications Committee in 2011, served as the Chairperson for two years and is currently serving as the Chairperson for 2015.

Barbara attends and participates in community events to promote Estrella. She attends community meetings and HOA-related seminars to bring as much knowledge into the Estrella Community as possible.

Barbara would like to continue her involvement on the Board of Directors to help improve Estrella.

fred a. Soltow, Jr.I am an Ordained Clergyperson with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). I am presently semi-retired serving a congregation in Quartzsite, Arizona.

I also have a broad construction experience, beginning as a stonemason. I completed my construction career as Managing Director of Resort Operations for a Four Seasons resort community. My responsibilities included management of six Homeowner Associations (HOA) and twelve CC&Rs representing a thousand homes.

I moved to Estrella in January of 2014. As an ECA Board member, I offer my years of experience in dealing with HOAs from both developer and owner perspectives, professional training in conflict management and willingness to serve the Estrella community.

ronald SpitzI have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and served in the U.S. Air Force.

My HOA experience includes:

• Member of the Board of Directors/President of a 100 unit condominium complex

• Participated in the hiring of community management companies

• Resident of Estrella for nine years and serving my third year as a Voting Member

• Served on the Ad Hoc Committee developing review criteria for management company evaluation

Why run for the Board? The HOA structure is not simple. I feel that open and direct communications are essential between all levels of the governing boards, the management company and the residents. I feel it is important to listen and absorb the information from all points of view, then make decisions.

association>>> Committees

The Scenery OutlookBy Landscape Committee

The Landscape Committee is one of four standing committees chartered by the Estrella Joint Committee. Originally tasked in February

of 2011, the committee’s responsibilities include observing common area landscaping practices and conditions, meeting monthly with the management company to review landscape conditions, addressing unresolved landscape concerns received from residents and assisting the management company in development of requests for proposals (RFP) and making contract recommendations to the Board of Directors.

The committee is composed of two advisors from the Management Company, Todd Wuellner-Facilities Director and Bobby Keller-Facilities Coordinator, and six volunteer resident members appointed annually by the Board of Directors. For 2015, committee members include Dennis Brungardt, Walter Coley, C.J. Harris, Sarah Mullen, James Modeste and Cherie Rosenquist. The committee has an opening for a seventh member and is seeking applicants at this time.

The committee works in partnership with the Management Company in determining annual landscaping budgets and various landscape project priorities. Examples include the annual tree and plant replacement programs and annual gravel replenishment programs.

Landscape maintenance-related expenses are the community’s single largest annual expense. The community is currently in the first year of a three year contract extension with Four Peaks Landscaping Services. A key aspect of the community’s relationship with Four Peaks is a shared commitment to an ongoing performance evaluation and management plan. Maintenance activities are performed by Four Peaks at common area parks, neighborhoods and rights of way with every property addressed on a six-week cycle.

Maintenance activities are evaluated on a sample basis every six weeks by a committee member walking parks, neighborhoods and rights of way following completion of maintenance activities the prior week. Using this approach, every one of the 600 plus areas in the community are evaluated twice

annually. The evaluations address seven categories which include cleaning, granite maintenance, turf maintenance, shrub/ground cover, tree maintenance, irrigation system and annual flowers. Evaluation results are tabulated by CCMC staff and reviewed with Four Peaks the following week. Performance evaluation ratings are subsequently reviewed with the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis.

In the 2015 community-wide survey recently completed, the question specific to Maintenance of Common Areas and Facilities indicated that of the 403 respondents 24% were Very Satisfied, 38% Satisfied, 14% Neutral, 21% Dissatisfied and 3% Very Dissatisfied. The survey covered common area landscaping, block and view fence wall maintenance and painting, and Starpointe Residents Club.

In reviewing the comments received in the survey (130) approximately 70% (positive and negative) were common area maintenance related. The majority of negative comments were related to the need for replacement of trees and plants or replenishment of granite. Funding for these activities has been increased significantly over the last three years, but residents obviously feel more attention is necessary. Additionally, there continues to be an opportunity to better inform residents about the landscape maintenance responsibilities (HOA areas versus City of Goodyear versus commercial properties) within the community. The survey results will strongly influence the committee’s activities for the remainder of 2015 and funding requests and priorities for 2016.

The Estrella Information Center is your one stop shop to learn about all things Estrella. Get to know the knowledgeable and friendly

Information Center staff, comprised almost entirely of Estrella residents. They are a fantastic resource for information on the ins and outs of the community. Stop by and say hello, or catch them out-and-about in the neighborhood.

amy kriStoSik is the marketing director responsible for the overall marketing strategy and initiatives for Estrella. She has enjoyed the relationships she has made with all of Estrella’s staff, as well as the residents, and feels that the tight knit community is what makes Estrella so strong. In addition to her role at Estrella, Amy is a busy wife and mom of three: Caroline, Ryan and Gizmo, her Maltese/Shi-Tzu mix. Amy is the only staff member that is not also a resident, but this does not stop her from making the 47 mile one-way commute from Gilbert, AZ.

birgitta timko is one of four community representatives, and she is likely one of the first faces you see when you enter the Information Center. Community representatives give tours and promote the lifestyle and amenities of Estrella to guests. Birgitta has been a resident for nine years and although that sounds like a long time, she is the team member who has lived in Estrella the least amount of time. She enjoys Estrella‘s beautiful location, desert mountain scenery and access to the amazing hiking trails. Birgitta also enjoys traveling and frequently visits her daughter and grandsons in Washington D.C. as well as her family still living in Sweden.

Caroline Stenz is the marketing manager responsible for providing support to Estrella builder sales teams and helping market Estrella. She feels that her love for the community makes marketing to consumers and real estate agents much easier. Caroline lives in the neighborhood of Sonoran Springs with her husband Frank, their children, Sarah and Abby - and their two dogs, Nava and Sassy. Caroline has lived in Estrella for 12 years. She points to the amenities, the beauty and the people as the most desirable traits of Estrella.

Cindy oliver is another wonderful Estrella Information Center community representative. She has lived in Estrella for 12 years in the Legends neighborhood. Cindy describes Estrella as a desert oasis for her entire family. They love the landscape, the scenery and the quiet nights and starry sky. She has traveled to just about every state in the U.S. and has lived throughout the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. She now feels that she has truly found her home in Estrella.

gayle warren is the marketing coordinator responsible for providing support to real estate agents and other duties related to builder sales and traffic reporting. Gayle loves the fact that she is able to meet and interact consistently with so many different people, great real estate agents and builders. Gayle has also lived in Estrella for 12 years. Moving to Arizona from the east coast, Gayle loves the lakes at Estrella because it makes her feel a little closer to home.

JUne montoya is also a community representative and another people person with a knack for making every visitor feel right at home. June has lived in Estrella for more than 17 years, the longest out of her fellow Information Center co-workers. She really enjoys the friendly residents, the amenities - such as the parks, trails and fitness center - and the musical events that are offered to residents in the community.June and her husband have a son and 18-month-old grandson who live in Florida.

SUSie Colborne is the last community representative in our Information Center staff run down, but she is certainly not least! She has been employed the longest at the Information Center…10 years. Some of Susie’s daily responsibilities beyond giving tours include tracking pricing on new homes in the community and keeping this information up to date on Estrella.com. One of her favorite parts of the job is being able to share her own personal stories of living in Estrella with potential buyers. Susie has also been a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines for 17 years.

Estrella Landscaping Update & Lawn TipsBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

Over the past few months you may have seen our crews completing projects throughout the

community’s common areas. As the year draws to a close, we have just a few more scheduled projects to be completed. We have the final shrub and tree replacement for the year in the pre-scheduled areas, large tree trimming and the fall over-seeding of select turf areas.

All of this is possible by prioritizing, scheduling, and budgeting for these projects by the Management Company CCMC, Four Peaks, and the Estrella Landscape Committee. We all work together to keep Estrella common area landscapes looking their best.

In the upcoming weeks you will see a great deal of activity as we prepare some of the turf areas to be over-seeded with a perennial rye seed so the turf will be green all winter long. This is a dusty and laborious task that involves mowing the grass lower than we are currently mowing it to allow the seed to make contact with the soil and germinate. You will see the grass areas changing colors (from green to blond) for a few weeks as we lower the height. After that, we will be checking the irrigation and applying the seed.

We need to operate the irrigation system during the day to keep the seed moist. In about two weeks you will see green grass seedlings. If you see a grass area not going through these procedures, please

know that the reason for this is to allow the bermuda grass (the summer grass) a little more time to grow and not force it dormant by cutting it lower and over-seeding it.

The over-seeding process injures the bermuda grass, so the best plan of action is to not over-seed the turf every year to let it “rest” at least one winter every three years. One area of significance which will not be included in this year’s overseeding will be around the South Lake.

The fall is a great time of year, especially for us desert dwellers as we look to spending more time outside and enjoying the cooler weather here in Estrella.

What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie WisemanBy Estrella Book Club

Ellen Marie Wiseman is the author of our September book club selection and it is quite a read. In this dynamic novel, the past and

present are merged into a memorable book about the nature of love and loyalty among other topics.

The contemporary story begins ten years after Izzy Stone’s mother fatally shoots her husband as he sleeps. Upset by her mother’s apparent insanity, visits to the imprisoned woman are out of the question. Izzy’s new foster parents, employees at a local museum, have asked her help in cataloging items at a long-closed state asylum. Unwilling at first, she does agree and in the abandoned belongings of former inmates finds a stack of unopened letters, a ten-year old journal, and something she never expected.

Flash back to 1929 when Clara Cartwright is eighteen years old. She’s caught in a fight with her overbearing

parents about her love for an Italian immigrant. Angry when she refuses an arranged marriage, Clara’s father sends her to a genteel home for nervous invalids. When his fortune is lost in the crash of 1929, he can no longer afford her care and Clara is committed to the public asylum.

As Izzy deals with the challenges of another new beginning, Clara’s story keeps drawing her into the past. Come discuss with us what Izzy discovers and find out if it makes a difference in her life.

The Estrella Book Club will meet at Starpointe Residents Club on Wednesday, September 9, at 10:00 a.m. This is also the time of year when we get suggestions for next year’s selections. We’d love to see you. Call Nina Adair, 623-810-3494, if you have questions.

Interstate 11 - An Arizona Infrastructure AchievementBy Mayor Georgia Lord

Recently I attended a public meeting at Estrella Foothills High School that addressed a variety of topics. One matter that a number of residents

expressed an interest in was the future Interstate 11 – a highway that not only will connect Phoenix and Las Vegas, but ultimately serve as a north-south corridor between Mexico and Canada.

It’s hard to imagine that the two largest cities in the United States not connected by a direct major interstate highway are Las Vegas and Phoenix.

But I am excited to say that is about to change. Lawmakers and transportation leaders from Arizona, Nevada, and the federal government gathered on April 6 for a groundbreaking of the first section of I-11. The initial 15-mile piece of infrastructure for the four-lane freeway will be a bypass around Boulder City, Nev.

After a two-year study and several public meetings in both states, Congress recognized the importance of the Arizona-Nevada corridor, therefore designating funds for I-11 in the most recent transportation authorization bill known as Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act.

The location for the portion of I-11 running through the Southwest Valley has not been decided. The Arizona Department of Transportation will initiate a Tier 1 Environmental Impact Study later this year, followed by meetings to gather public input.

No doubt such a highway will serve as a catalyst for economic development in Goodyear, the Grand Canyon State, and globally.

Projected to be a continuous high-capacity trade corridor, I-11 will support a big proportion of large-scale manufacturing operations and movement of freight traffic. As a multimodal corridor, it also has the potential to include freight and passenger rail, energy transmission, and other high-tech facilities.

Years from now, when the highway is complete, I-11 will become one of the most important achievements in this state’s history. It also will play a role in the continued growth of Goodyear as yet another convenience for our residents, businesses, and visitors.

I encourage all Goodyear residents to learn more about this future highway. For more information on Interstate 11, visit http://i11study.com/.

Estrella and Local Artists Capture Elements of NatureBy Mike Sakal, Public Information Officer

Before she retired, Nancy Hampton said she didn’t have the time to pursue her passion of painting.

Now, a little more than 10 years after retiring as an office manager and moving to Goodyear from the Chicago area with her husband, Jack, she’s been more than a blossoming artist. The same goes for Jack, who thought he’d golf more once they moved to the Grand Canyon State. Hampton took an art course and started serious painting in 2004.

On August 6, they were among numerous artists at the Goodyear Public Library — including Estrella residents Debra Goley, Alice Slack and Dave Finley — at the opening reception for “Elements of Nature: An Exhibition of Fine Art” show sponsored by the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission. About 100 people, including Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord and Arts and Culture Coordinator Guylene Ozlanski, attended the reception that features 29 pieces of work by 24 West Valley artists. The show also features photography and will run through October 31 at the library, 14455 W. Van Buren Street.

The show aims to promote the beauty of the natural world as presented through the hearts and vision of the artists.

Nancy Hampton’s oil painting of a large flower, “Blue Jimsen,” stood out as did Jack Hampton’s oil painting of Superstition I, Alice Slack’s photography of Oak Creek and Bryce Canyon, Dave Finley’s photos “Harris Hawk,” and “Seagull at Sunset,” Sherri Vanschaick’s clever colored pencil piece of “Huntin’ for Spiders,” – along with many others that easily could become favorites.

Debra Goley, whose painting “Chards” on acrylic and fiber depicts various natural events in the atmosphere, said, “I am committed to developing my gifts and abilities as an artist with integrity. You have to be giving of one’s self and sharing expressions from within to inspire others with mystery, beauty, awe, love, gratitude, nature, spirit, joy, hope and humanity.”

James Albers’ acrylic painting on Masonite, “Domain,” features a bald eagle flying near snow-capped mountains and a river and easily could be Flagstaff, but Albers, who said he likes to paint large birds, said

he came up with the scene in his mind.

“I seek to evoke feelings of “being there” – a moment of time in nature’s continuing story,” Albers said. “While I strive for accuracy in my settings with the details, vegetation, geology, and coloration, I exercise artistic freedom with a derived impressionistic influence of color, texture, light and composition.”

On the photography side, Estrella resident Dave Finley, is a familiar presence at community events, often taking pictures of people. It should come as no surprise that he also captures breathtaking images of nature. One of his pieces at the show, “Harris Hawk,” captures the hawk outdoors at the Sonora Desert Museum near Tucson.

Alice Slack, a long time nature and human interest photographer, captured a stunning scene from a recent photo trip to the canyons. She also leads the Estrella Photo Group helping photographers polish their creative and technical skills.

Estrella resident, Lee Hendrickson, was unable to attend, but had a piece on display; North Rim, a wonderful photo of the Grand Canyon.

Many creative and gifted artists have contributed to the success of the Elements of Nature exhibit. Their varied points of view help invoke a sense of place in our natural world.

pools Close for Upcoming Renovations By Eric Holmgren, Club & Program Manager

Starpointe Residents Club pools will be closed beginning on September 18 for reserve renovations that will update

and enhance the amenities and also make the facility more attractive to current and future residents of Estrella. CCMC Management, along with the EJC Board of Directors and resident directors from the ECA and VCA, have been working hard on these plans and are excited to see them begin and come to fruition.

We apologize for any inconvenience; however, we have made every effort to organize, gain the necessary approvals and commence this project in a timeframe that will hopefully allow us to open the new and improved pool areas by the week of Thanksgiving this year.

Also, understanding how important the lap pool is to many of our residents, the demolition phase will encompass the lap and main WaterPark pools, with our plan to concentrate on the lap pool and re-open that first.

The work slated to be done for both pool areas includes a complete removal and re-application of pool decking, new interior pebble sheen with aqua-cool blue quartz and new pool tiles.

We are working on arrangements for the use of additional facilities to accommodate Estrella residents during this closure. We will provide these details as they become available.

We look forward to a successful project and reopening the pools to share the new features with you and your guests this fall.

In addition to the pool renovations a few more projects scheduled in the reserves for this year include:

• Repairing the Starpointe Lighthouse (December 2015)

• Refinishing the waterslides (January 2016)

• Updating the pool and patio furniture (January 2016)

So that you stay in the know about all projects register with www.LifeInEstrella.com. As always, your patience and enthusiasm are appreciated.

A.F.O. - Adult Fitness Orientation By Lyn Marthaler

Estrella has many amenities that its residents should take advantage of and enjoy. One

such amenity is the Fitness Room located inside Starpointe Residents Club. It is available seven days a week and has a variety of cardio and strength equipment.

At Starpointe we know that many of our Estrella residents would like to take the plunge and get themselves started or back into an exercise routine. We also understand that getting started on an exercise program can seem like the hardest thing in the world to do! The gym and the equipment may appear to be rather intimidating. Unspoken rules and unfamiliar machines can create uneasiness. You are not alone if those are your thoughts and to remedy any “gym anxiety” Starpointe Residents Club would like to invite you to A.F.O. (Adult Fitness Orientation).

Bob Jankowski, a certified personal trainer at the club, will be conducting the orientation sessions. He will provide a thorough understanding of the purpose and correct usage of our gym equipment, giving you the knowledge to maximize the benefits of each piece of equipment and how using it correctly can ward off injuries. Bob will also go over “fitness room etiquette” so that our club remains a friendly environment for all of us.

The Adult Fitness Orientation is offered the third Thursday of the month from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at no charge to Estrella residents ages 18 and older. Taking advantage of this orientation at Starpointe is a great first step. From there you can set realistic expectations and goals and know that you will enjoy using “your” resident Fitness Room.

Let’s get started! You may register for a free orientation session at Starpointe Entry Desk. Please note class size is limited to six participants per session.

Teacher Attends Colonial Williamsburg InstituteBy Tab Broyles, Director of Teacher Professional Development

Williamsburg, Va. – Amber Parrish, a 5th-grade teacher at Westar in Goodyear, AZ recently completed an intense, six-day immersion in

American history at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute.

The Teacher Institute was created to encourage history education and make it engaging for students. Now in its 26th year, the Teacher Institute helps prepare teachers to help students meet national and state history standards through hands-on immersion experiences in colonial history.

Parrish is a teacher in Liberty School District. She has taught for 3 years at Westar. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Azusa Pacific University and a master’s degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University.

The Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute provides participants with interactive teaching techniques and skills to become mentor teachers who can assist their peers and other educators to develop active learning classrooms and make history exciting for their students.

During six-day sessions on location in Colonial Williamsburg and the surrounding area, participants engage in an interdisciplinary approach to teaching social studies with American history as the focus. Teachers have the opportunity to exchange ideas with historians, meet character interpreters and become part of the story in The Revolutionary City. Throughout each day, teachers work collaboratively with Colonial Williamsburg staff and Master Teachers to examine interactive teaching techniques and develop instructional materials that improve instruction, raise literacy levels, enhance thinking skills, and bring history to life in the classroom. Participating teachers agree to conduct in-service training sessions following their attendance at Teacher Institute in order to share their experience with other teachers. Teachers also are required to develop lesson plans that to implement in the classroom.

Colonial Williamsburg builds on a nearly 60-year educational outreach tradition by exploring new technologies, expanding successful initiatives and offering new ventures to fulfill its educational mission. Teacher Institute was developed to improve the

quality of American history education in the nations’ schools and insure that every student gains an understanding of the principles behind our system of government. The program began in 1990 with 44 fifth-grade teachers from two southern California school districts. Today, more than 8,100 teachers from all 50 states and three foreign countries have participated since the inception of the Teacher Institute.

Established in 1926, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is the not-for-profit educational institution that preserves and operates the restored 18th-century revolutionary capital of Virginia as a town-sized living history museum, telling the inspirational stories of our nation’s founding men and women. Within the restored and reconstructed buildings, historic interpreters, attired as colonial men and women from slaves to shopkeepers to soldiers, relate stories of colonial Virginia society and culture — stories of our journey to become Americans. As Colonial Williamsburg interprets life in the time of the American Revolution for its guests, it also invites them to interact with history. Williamsburg is located 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., off Interstate 64. To learn more about Teacher Institute, visit www.history.org/history/teaching/tchsti.cfm.

Amber Parrish from Westar learns new methods of engaging students in history lessons.

BALLET UNDER THE STARSThis year marks the 18th Annual “Ballet Under The Stars” Series. Ballet Arizona returns to Estrella on Friday, September 25 at 7 p.m., and the event is free and open to the public. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the festivities. This program brings the experience of ballet to select communities across Phoenix to enjoy dance in a unique outdoor setting. The show

will be complete with full stage, lighting, costumes and beautiful Arizona weather. Ballet Under The Stars is family friendly and a great way to introduce a professional ballet performance to children. The event will also feature local artists, food vendors and youth art activities sponsored by the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission beginning at 6 p.m., as well as an opening performance by our own Estrella Mountain Elementary School student volunteers who are working with a choreographer from the ballet. For more information, please visit http://balletaz.org/community-outreach/ballet-under-the-stars/ or call 602-381-0184.
