Our buildings are award-winning and attract worldwide attention. Broadcasting Place was named the best tall building in the world in 2010 by a council of global architects.

HISTORY & HERITAGEThe university’s origins can be traced back to 1824, with the founding of the Leeds Mechanics Institute. Leeds Polytechnic was formed in 1970 until it became an independent Higher Education Corporation on 1 April 1989. In 1992 the institution was given University status and changed its name to Leeds Metropolitan University.

OUR REGIONLeeds is the UK’s largest centre for financial and professional services outside London, with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city. The turnover of our university is £171m per annum.Our university’s impact on the economy is worth £350m per annum.
