Class 21 adult leaders shared their visits to the many health and human service organizations in Martin County during

the morning session at the Boys and Girls Club. Their homework assignment was to tour these facilities and report on

what services they provide our community. It was a real eye opener for the class. A bus tour of Indiantown was given by

Brian Powers with a stop at Seminole Inn for lunch. Kevin Powers gave the class a lesson on water management and a

tour of Lake Okeechobee. The day ended at DuPuis Park Nature Center. Thanks to Martin Memorial Health Systems for

sponsoring the lunch and to our alumni coordinators for an excellent day - Holly Laiben, Character Counts, Janice

Meadows, Martin Memorial Heart Center, Angie Metcalf, Martin Memorial Human Resources and Mat Churchey,

Treasure Coast Food Bank and to our many guest speakers who participated in the day session.

Business Person of the Month Business Person of the Month ---- Sharon KinaneSharon Kinane

Martin Memorial Health Systems has won several prestigious awards, such as Employer of Choice,

Thomson Reuters Top 100 Hospitals, and Best Places to Work in Martin County- and they are now on a

journey to achieve yet another recognition.

The Magnet Recognition Program was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

to recognize health care organizations that provide nursing excellence. By meeting their standards and

quality outcomes, this designation certifies that the nurses at Martin Memorial Health Systems provide

patient care using innovative and evidence based practice that results in the highest quality of patient

care and optimal patient outcomes. As the Magnet Recognition Coordinator at Martin Memorial,

Sharon Kinane, RN, MSN (Class 9) is leading this effort.

The journey began several years ago by analyzing what the Magnet standards required and developing a plan for achiev-

ing those goals. Some highlights of the standards include patient clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, nurse satisfac-

tion, nurse education and training (including degrees and certifications), and nursing research. Sharon is heavily involved

in establishing structures and processes where needed, developing action plans to improve areas where needed, as well as

educating Martin Memorial staff on the Magnet standards and process.

Martin Memorial is an excellent hospital and as they move forward on this journey, it will only become better.

Indiantown, FL– On Tuesday, January 11, 2011, 29 students of this year’s

Martin Youth LEADERship Program held their fifth monthly session. The

Environmental Day Program Chair, Kim Kanter, FAU/CES Education

& Training Coordinator at DuPuis, provided students with an on-site guid-

ed tour by bus, The DuPuis Management Area, is a 21,875 acre multi-use

natural site interspersed with numerous ponds, wet prairies, cypress domes,

pine flat woods, and remnant Everglades marsh. The area provides miles of

hiking and horseback trails, an equestrian center, graded vehicle roads, back-

pack and group campsites, and seasonal hunting. There is no fee for camping in

DuPuis, which is on a first-come, first-served basis. There also is a group camp-

ing site off the DuPuis Grade. Students were delighted to view several wild-life

habitats including a bald eagle’s nest, an active bat house, a site for the rein-

troduced federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, gator trails and more.

After lunch, Nick Blount, Manager of External Affairs for FPL, discussed

with the students the benefits and challenges of alternative energy and the so-

lar farm in Indiantown. FPL generously underwrote the costs of organic

t-shirts for each of the students. Finally, Tim Brown from the Treasure Coast Wildlife Hospital located in Palm City,

gave students an up close and personal chance to learn more about local wildlife

The Martin Youth LEADERship Program for high school students is in its 14th year. The group is continually striving

to better serve the students that have applied and been accepted to the program. The current Martin Youth LEADER-

ship Program is an opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors throughout Martin County to develop and en-

hance their leadership skills. Students must apply, and only 39 or so are selected to participate in this comprehensive nine-

month program that is modeled after LEADERship Martin County. Upon completion, these young Leaders have learned

about their community including history, government, business, arts and culture, criminal justice and the environment.

Class members are given a rare opportunity to reach their highest leadership potential through sessions focusing on

Covey’s Effective Habits and other leadership enhancing activities. Every effort is made to select a diverse class

representing various levels of leadership experience.

CEO’s Perspective: “So, I’m here now – where am I headed?” Tim Kinane (class 1) presented an economic update to LEADERship Alumni at the February lunch-eon meeting held at AECOM offices in Palm City. Tim is a Vistage Chairman, an invitation-only group for successful CEOs and presidents on the Treasure Coast. Vistage is a chief executive organization with more than 14,000 members worldwide, providing access to new business perspectives, innovative strategies, and actionable ideas to CEO’s and business leaders. Tim’s coaching clients include a broad variety of professionals, businesses, governments and not-for-profit organizations. The Vistage pro-cess utilizes peer review and educational opportunities to increase effectiveness and enhance the lives of leaders and their organizations. Tim currently facilitates two Vistage Groups on the Treasure Coast.

Tim presented the Vistage CEO Confidence Index, an inside look at Vistage member confidence in the economy and their businesses. This Index has proven to be an accurate indicator of GDP and employment growth numbers 2-3 quarters before such growth occurs, for the last several years. In the fourth quarter of 2010, the Index showed small to medium sized business CEOs expressing a remarkable resurgence of optimism both in the overall economy and for their own companies, an indication of positive growth ahead.

Following this informative economic forecast, Tim shared actionable advice to keep pace with the changing economy. Strategies and trends that will affect businesses, governments and not-for-profit organizations included:

• Thrift is the New Cool- the “in” thing to do now is to demonstrate thrift in business management.

• The Morph Corp- your company should be able to adapt to the changing needs of your customers.

• High Tech/ High Touch- the more high tech your business, the more high touch you should be with

your customers. The presentation closed with Tim’s offer to provide a copy of the Vistage CEO Confidence Index re-port to those that requested it. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of this report, or in learning more information about Vistage International, please contact Tim directly at [email protected].
