September 2015 Meeting

What a turn out for our first meeting following summer break! There were 118 members and 11 guests attending.

On the flip side, there were only six items for Show and Tell, with four of them from the same person. Door prizes were

donated by Sharon Kryvenchuk, Mary Pal, Wilhelmine Hill, Anna Cornel and Christine Piché, in addition to seven prizes

left over from the 25th Anniversary Party. Winners were Wilhelmine Hill, Beverley Davidge, Lois Roberts, Judy Wood,

Sue Gieratz, Edith Seward, Georgine Robichaud, Arlene Langstaff, Bronwyn Sutton, Bridget O’Flaherty, Donna Easter,

Heather Buchan, Nijole Deskin, Mary Chaikowsky, and Vicki Hough. The raffle basket was won by Marilyn Robinson.

The 200th Anniversary Quilt was shown and David Taylor was in attendance to accept the quilt on behalf of the 200th Anniversary Joint Committee. He thanked the Guild and everyone involved in organizing, assembling and quilting the quilt. Carol Darou extended thanks to Sue Matte and all her helpers in arranging our 25th Anniversary Party. Carol advised that the QOTT was a huge success with 1450 visitors attending. She read out two thank you notes; the first from the Great War Memorial Foundation for our donation of the Outlreach quilt and advising that Eva McFarlane was

thrilled to win it. The second was from Andrew McKay of Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute for our $500 bursary. Carol advised that anyone who donated items to the Boutique that did not sell are welcome to take them back if they wish. Carol introduced a booklet compiled by Muriel Hopper from information contained in our archives on the history of the Guild. One copy is being put into the Library for people to sign out. If there is a great interest and a waiting list for this booklet, some more copies will be made. Carol thanked Muriel for her hard work in compiling this information. Carol advised that Gloria Currie has brought in photo albums for people to look through during the break. Carol advised that she still has four $50 gift certificates for Inspired Getaways near Pakenham. If any member is interested in holding a retreat there, then see her for a certificate. Inspired Getaways does have a website if you wish to see what it is all about. Jean Sherwin asked members to read the job descriptions on the insert to the newsletter for the four positions that need to be filled. She hopes people will volunteer without her having to call around the membership. Beverley Davidge advised that there are still a couple of places available for the Retreat, October 21-23. Heather Buchan advised that sign-up for Block of the Month is at the back and she has two sample layouts on show for this month’s block.

Marie Amyot presented this month’s books for the Library. Loree Tannett talked about two projects for Outreach this year - “Fidget” quilts or touch quilts and the Outreach quilt, which she was thinking of doing as a weekend in-town retreat for cutting, piecing and assembling the Outreach quilt top. More information will be included in the October newsletter. Alexis Mongeau advised the workshops being held from now through November. She advised that Cathy Price has taken on the job of the Challenge this year; Cathy then explained what she plans for the Alphabet Challenge and said that there will be an insert in October’s newsletter outlining the criteria.

Outreach

It is now October and time to get into this year’s projects. As outlined at the September meeting, Outreach will be doing two projects this year. For individuals, we are making Quirky Quilts, also known as Sensory Quilts or Touch Quilts. Please see the attachment for

directions and ideas, as well as a useful website for reference. This should be an interesting and challenging small project. They are only 20 x 25 inches as a guideline. Our large charity quilt is planned to be done in an In Town Retreat in February. I would like to encourage the beginner and new members to plan on joining us for this adventure. An

expression of interest sign-up sheet will be available at the Outreach table. I also need suggestions for recipients for both the Quirky Quilts and the large outreach quilt. The forms will be available at the October meeting. Please stop by the Outreach Table at the meeting and ask questions, collect forms and just have a chat. ~ Loree Tannett ~
