OLDER ADULT NEED A YEARLY FLU SHOT! While flu seasons can differ in sever-ity, during most seasons, adults 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of se-vere flu disease, making it especially important for older adults to get an an-nual flu shot. In recent years it is esti-mated that between 71% and 85% of seasonal flu-related deaths have oc-

curred among people 65 years and older, and between 54% and 70% of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations have occurred among people in that age group. While flu vaccine can vary in how well it works, dur-ing seasons when flu vaccines are well-matched to circu-lating flu viruses, getting vaccinated has been shown to reduce the risk of getting sick by 40% to 60%. Other stud-ies show that flu vaccines also protect similarly against hospitalization. A yearly flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu illness. You have the power to fight flu this season. Protect yourself and the ones you love with a flu vaccine.

Jorgensen and Cathy Simon. Tai Chi Class WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE FOR OLDER ADULTS? A recent Swedish study found that physical activity was the number one contributor to longevity, adding extra years to your life—even if you don’t start exercising until your senior years. But getting active is not just about add-ing years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years. You’ll not only look better when you exercise, you’ll feel sharper, more energetic and experience a greater sense of well-being. Physical health benefits: Helps you maintain or lose weight. As metabolism naturally slows with age, maintaining a healthy weight is a challenge. Exercise helps increase metabolism and builds muscle mass, helping to burn more calories. Reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease. People who exercise tend to have improved immune and digestive functioning, better blood pressure and bone den-sity, and a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. Enhances mobility, flexibility, and balance. Exer-cise improves your strength, flexibility and posture, which in turn will help with balance, coordination, and reducing the risk of falls. Strength training also helps alleviate the symptoms of chronic conditions such as arthritis. Mental health benefits: Improves sleep. Quality sleep is vital for your over-all health. Regular activity can help you fall asleep more quickly; sleep more deeply, and wake feeling more ener-getic and refreshed. Boosts mood and self-confidence. Exercise is a huge stress reliever and the endorphins produced can actually help reduce feeling of sadness, depression or anxiety. Be-ing active and feeling strong naturally helps you feel ore self-confident. Does amazing things for the brain. Activities like Sudoku or crossword puzzles can help keep your brain active, but little comes close to the beneficial effects of exercise on the brain. It can help brain functions as di-verse as multitasking and creativity and can help prevent memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia. Getting a active may even help slow the progression of brain disor-ders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Little Boy Blue The little toy dog is covered with dust,

But sturdy and stanch he stands; And the little toy soldier is red with rust,

And his musket molds in his hands. Time was when the little toy dog was new

And the soldier was passing fair. And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue

Kissed them and put them there.

“Now, don’t you go till I come” He said, “And don’t you make any noise!” So toddling off to his trundle-bed

He dreamt of the pretty toys. And as he was dreaming, an angel song

Awakened our Little Boy Blue- Oh, the years are many, the years are long,

But the little toy friends are true.

Ay, faithful to Little Boy Blue they stand, Each in the same old place

Awaiting the touch of a little hand, The smile of a little face.

And they wonder, as waiting these long years through, In the dust of that little chair,

What has become of our Little Boy Blue Since he kissed them and put them there.
