MEMORIES, MEMORIES AND MORE MEMORIES Established 1983-------Gothenburg Senior Center

APRIL 1986—A dance was held April 4th, with music by the "High Liner". Another dance was on the 18th with music by Mark Hoselton. A trip to the races in Grand Island was planned for April 10th. A German Day, with a special German Dinner, music and much more was planned for April 25th. A 'Thank You' was given to several people, those being: Verna and Renkie Aden for a donation to the Center which was used to pur-chase a meat grinder attachment for the mixer, Verlin Janssen for donating a copy machine to the Center, the Gothenburg Senior Citi-zen's Inc., for their generous donation of $500 to the Center and Corn-husker Hardware for donating the use of their power rake. A Memorial came in from the family of Art Aden and a Memorial was given in memory of Dale Fenner. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 1991—The news letters for the first six months of 1991 are missing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ APRIL 1996—The following Memorials were received at the Center during the month of March: Goldie Holmes, Donna Rubenthaler, Gertrude Schwanz and Dez Aden. The Evening Meals were started again this month. Elsie Helms was the winner of the March Pool Tournament. Another Ethnic Day was planned for April 12th. This time it was a Greek Day with all things Greek. The meal and a display of items of Greek Heritage. The Product of the Month brought in $36.21 in Products and $50 in cash. The request for April was Flour and/or Vegetable Oil. National Volunteer Week was April 21-27. To honor all the great Volunteers we have at the Center, a Coffee was held on April 24th. Without all the Volunteers helping in so many ways the Center could not function, and so many of us would grieve for the lose. Keep up the good work and never give up. The Center was planning new center pieces for the May tables, Bunnies would be from 20 oz. plastic pop bottles. Needed a number of the bottles and volunteers to help make the bunnies. The Volunteers started making noodles way back in 1986. It was Roy Block's idea for a Fund-raiser and we've been 'noodling' ever since. A lot of noodles have been made and sold, a total of 5,206 lbs. from the 1986 till 1996. The number of dollars brought in by the help of the eggs, flour and the many hours of turning the crank, it does add up. The cumulative total as of 1996 was $10,412, Wonder what it is now? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APRIL 2001—An entertainer, by the stage name of 'Granny', came to keep us laughing. Her presentation was enjoyed, Thursday, April 26. On Wednesday, April 11, Royce Hiebner from Hiebner's Chiropractic Clinic was with us, to give a talk about joint health, treatment techniques, Medicare coverage, and general chiropractic care. There are many ways to help keep the Center going. Myrna Buterbaugh found a way to help, that fit her life. She loved to bake cookies, but no way could she eat more than a few, so the people that came to the Senior Center enjoyed them at the same time contributed money to help the Center. During March, 81 doz. cookies were sold. Product of the Month received $87 in cash and $25.81 in products. The product need for April was Sugar, Flour, Evaporated Milk and Baking Soda. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APRIL 2006—April 28th was Volunteer Appreciation Day. March Bridge Party results were: Marlene DeCamp—High, Rose Marie Kampfe—Second and Francis Jobman came in Low. April's quilt in the Quilter's Corner belonged to Nina McPheeters Rummell, daughter of Ira and Pearl Mc Pheeters, Sister of Nola Wahlgren and Burton McPheeters. Each square was appliqued and embroidered by a family member or a friend in the 1930's before Nina married John Rummell in 1935. At a much later date the quilt was

finished by Karen Petock, wife of a grandson. The finished quilt was presented to Nina in 2003, sixty eight years after her wedding day. Product of the Month in March brought in $85 in donations of cash and $22.92 in products. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APRIL 2011—Harriet Block was featured as the Volunteer of the Month. Jeff Eastman from 'Legal Aid of Nebraska' gave a talk about the work of the Legal Aid, the Elder Access Line and the legal issues that affect Nebraska Seniors on April 12th. An Easter Cake Raffle was held April 19th. The money would be used to purchase flowers and fertilizer for the lawn. A two day Garage Sale was set for May 5th and 6th. Four teams signed up to join the spring 'WII Bowling' League: 'The Misfits'—John Olmsted, Janet Jenkins, Ruth & Ray Schultz, 'The Jaz'—Barb Ehlers, Andrew Davenport and Larry Lake, 'The Jok-ers'—Angela Barkmeier, Deb Claflin, Jakeh White and Becky Bar-tels, 'The Spinners'—Rodney Munster, Chris, Mindy and Ramona (?). After two weeks the 'Misfits' were ahead. The March Pinochle Party winners were: Linda Houborg—High, Velma Underwood—2nd, Judy Hicken—Low and Traveling Prizes were: Norma Scott and Barb Bartels. The Sunday Fried Chicken Dinner was quite successful. Two hun-dred and twenty people were served, thus helping the Senior Center funds with a sum of $1,954.15. This total was the gross count. Product of the Month Fund brought in $289.50 in cash donations and several product donations. The stated need for April was Flour, Napkins, Styrofoam Cups and 6 inch Plastic Plates ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ APRIL 2016—A meeting was called on March 4, 1976 (40 years ago) by Arlyn Saathoff, pastor of the Gothenburg American Lutheran Church, for the purpose of developing an interest in starting a 'Meals on Wheels' program. There were ten people, present for the meeting, interested in the program. After several meetings to do the planning that was needed to set the idea in motion, the first meal was delivered by the hospital staff on May 3, 1976. The first day 12 people received a meal. Today (2016) an average of 31 meals are delivered. The March Product of the Month received product donations and $1,700 in donations to be applied for the new mixer and $50 for dona-tion to the General Fund. We also did well on our Fried Chicken Din-ner by raising $2,656.14. After expenses paid, the remainder of the proceeds went toward the purchase of a new mixer. The Cake Raffle hit an all-time high with $525 raised to be used on the garden and landscape expenses. There were two people remember with Memorials those being: Doris Geiken and Nadine Liljestrand. Bridge Party results for March was: Cora Bosch—High, Den-nis VanOverbeke—Sec. and low went to Kay Lutjemeyer. Dale Farmer celebrated his 80th birthday with the people of the Center. A picture of the couple, Dale and his wife Jodi, was posted on the Facebook page, to which 700 friends and family responded. Compiled by Ramona Ollendorf The Swing How do you like to go up in a swing Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing Ever a child can do! Up in the air and over the wall, Till I can see so wide. River and trees and cattle and all Over the countryside— Till I look down on the garden green, Down on the roof so brown— Up in the air I go flying again, Up in the air and down!
