IT’S TAX TIME ALSO “SCAM” TIME The IRS is warning against a variety of tax scams to watch out for. Scam emails are designed to tr ick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software com-panies. These emails can seek information about re-funds, filing status, confirming personal information, or-dering transcripts and verifying PIN information.

When people click on these email links, they are tak-en to sites designed to imitate an official-looking web-site, such as IRS.gov. These sites ask for Social Security numbers and other personal information which could be used to help file false tax returns.

The IRS will not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text message or social media! The OFFICIAL IRS WEBSITE IS www.irs.gov. Don’t be fooled by a close variation such as irsgov, irs.net or something similar. Telephone Scams targeting taxpayers have been showing up around the country. Callers claim to be em-ployees of the IRS, but are not. They can be very con-vincing, using fake names and bogus IRS badge numbers

and usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit care or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a driver’s license.

The IRS will NEVER Call to demand immediate payment or call at all with-out first mailing you a bill. Demand that you pay taxes without an opportunity to appeal or question the amount owed. Require a specific payment method. Ask for a credit/debit card number over the phone. Threaten to have you arrested for not paying.

MEMORIES, MEMORIES AND MORE MEMORIES Established 1983-------Gothenburg Senior Center

March 1986—The results of the Chicken-N-Biscuit Dinner was very good, three hundred people served, with $874.10 after expenses. The comforter that was sold to the highest bidder brought in $150. Rob-erta Trimble gave the winning bid. The return on the comforter brought the total amount for the evening to $984.10. Many people helped with this fund-raiser: the making of pies, donating chickens, selling tickets, helping serve, Mrs. Crone donating the comforter top, Norma Campbell providing the batting, Velma Lambertus the giving of the fabric for the backing and of all the quilters who helped to tie the comforter.
