Since opening in 1914, the Ruby Theatre has changed a bit over the years, but has remained a staple in the downtown Chelan community.
As the Ruby celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, current owners Mary Murphy and Larry Hibbard refl ect on the theater’s history.
Owning and running the Ruby Theatre is not their only job. Murphy is a health consultant and Hibbard is an architect and owns an orchard.
“We feel [the Ruby] is a really important part of the life of downtown [Chelan],” Murphy said. “This is our commitment to the community.”
The Ruby is the oldest continuously running theater in the Northwest, and
one of the oldest in the country. The theater takes its name from Ruby Potter, the daughter of the fi rst owner, Frank Potter. Frank had signed a fi ve year lease with the Kingman brothers, who built the structure on Woodin Avenue.
The movie industry was just starting out in 1914, the year that Paramount Pictures produced its fi rst fi lm. The Ruby, built solely for picture shows, was a bold move during a time when some churches and schools preached that it was a sin to attend a show.
Its doors opened to the public on July 1. The Potters ran the theater for four years and little Ruby, who was 10 years old at the time of the opening, played piano in the pit under the screen.
In 1918 Frank broke his lease with
the Kingmans and moved his family to Vantage where he ran the Kitty-Grant ferry and eventually killed his wife, Caroline and himself around 1919. A mystery lingered for a long while afterward about what happened to Ruby, who by then was a 15-year-old orphan.
The Ruby Theatre passed through many new owners thereafter, including the Kelseys who purchased it in March of 1919 and lived behind the screen for a short period while they built a home. The small space was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Kelsey, their three children, and an uncle.
The theater thrived under their management and was passed on to new owners in 1974. In 1988, Fred and Jean Payne became interested in reviving the Ruby and had Hibbard

Many rumors ran through Chelan about what would become of the Ruby. Hibbard said it came close to becoming a shoe store and he just “couldn’t let that happen.” Hibbard and the Paynes bought the theater on April Fool’s Day 1989.
“I knew nothing about theater,” Hibbard said.
Hibbard, who grew up in Manson, married Murphy in 1997 and Jean Payne sold her share of the Ruby to them in 2006, years after her husband had died.
Since then, Hibbard began searching for the answer to that nagging, 70-some-year-old mystery.
“We never knew what happened to Ruby,” Hibbard said.
Finally, in November of 2003, the theater was visited by Ruby Potter’s granddaughter, Sally Strekel. Strekel informed the current owners that Ruby had gone to live with her aunt in Ohio after her parents’ deaths. She later moved to California
with her husband, had two children and became a piano teacher. Ruby Potter died in 1969.
Until Strekel met Hibbard and Murphy, she believed that Ruby’s parents died in an infl uenza epidemic, which was the story Ruby had always told her children.
Murphy said several rumors have come and gone over the years about the theater being haunted by Ruby’s ghost.
“My belief is that if there
is a ghost, it’s a good ghost,” Murphy said.
Murphy said they love seeing the generations of people who are regular customers at the Ruby.
Parents who grew up seeing fi lms at the Ruby bring their children to see movies. The theater continues to show movies and is also available for special event and party rentals.
The theater cycles through one to two fi lms per week. See page 3 for what’s playing this week.

Tunnel Hill winery has been in Chelan since 2001 and is a family business.
In 1933, Knapps Hill Tunnel was blasted. A few years later, the rubble was used to build the private cottage that stands today. From this story the name Tunnel Hill was born. They specialize in Pinot Noir and produce about 1,100 cases of wine per year. The winery also makes Syrah, Riesling, and Viognier.
They recommend…
The Pinot Noir, which is Tunnel Hill’s signature wine and what they are well known for. Tasting room manager and assistant winemaker Michelle Fanton described this wine as being very earthy and not overly fruity.
“I think people are surprised by that,” Fanton said. “The Viognier is also a very crisp, white wine. It has a lot of citrus fl avors and is just very crisp and bright.”
She said the Viognier is made in a stainless steel tank and has a “crisp acidity” to it.
Why stop by?
Tunnel Hill provides a free vineyard and cellar tour every Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. This is a short walking tour up into the vineyards where guests will learn about the grapes and which stages they are in. They will also be able to see the cellar and learn about the history of the property.
The winery hosts Wine tasting 101 every Tuesday at 4 p.m., which costs $15 and is limited to eight people. Those who sign up will learn about how the wine is made and what factors affect the fl avor of the wine.
The winery also has a happy hour every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., which offers $5 by-the-glass specials.Yoga and Wine Tasting is held every Friday at 10 a.m
“We really want all people to feel welcome,” Fanton said. “Whether they’re really into wine and are knowledgeable about it or just want to come in and have a glass. We want people to relax and feel at home.”

the South Shore Road, through Chelan,
and finishing at the lovely Manson Bay

This fall, from Sept. 6-7 is the Sail-
ing Regatta. This annual race encour-
