SUMMER... 11

By Holly Thorpe

For Lake Chelan This Week

July has given way to the heat of August, and the dust from last weekend’s rodeo is settling. At the heart of Chelan, on the cool grass of Riverwalk Park, the Fine Arts Festival has just fi nished setting up its booths and awaits the crowds it draws every year.

This year’s festival will feature 40 artists from all over Washington and the Northwest, with visitors from Oregon and Idaho. According to Laura Freeman, the Publicity Chair for the Lake Chelan Arts Council, half of the artists are returning and half are new to the show.

Visitors can explore the handful of booths, try on handmade jewelry and scarves, check out quilts, paintings, and even culinary arts, and perhaps fi nd a

new work of art to add to their collection.

“The art is easy to look at and easy to take home,” Freeman said. Of course, anyone looking for a perfect piece to take home with them might want to bid at the Art by the Foot Auction. The auction features 12”x12” art that’s perfect to transport. While a lot of the work for sale is paintings, a few mounted sculptures are also up for grabs. Prior to the auction, the art is available for perusal at the Chelan Public Library, and all of it is local. All proceeds from the auction will go towards Arts Council projects, including the Chelan Valley Players, Bachfest, scholarships for local students and small art classes in Chelan.

Anyone with kids must check out the cardboard castle which serves as a blank canvas for any aspiring young artists. Paints and smocks provided. Another station gives little princes and

princesses a chance to make their own crowns.

Perhaps the best part of the whole festival is that it’s free.

“There’s no admission price. You can come and go, [and] it’s right downtown,” Freeman said. “Dip in, paint the castle, listen to the music, dip out.”

Yes, she said music. Live bands play all weekend, and there will be a preview of Chelan Valley Players’ upcoming production of “Sister Amnesia’s Nunsense Jamboree.”

“Riverwalk Park is just beautiful, and it’s got a lot of trees and a lot of shade, we’re hoping for a cool breeze” she said. “[The festival] is really fun for both locals and tourists.”

This week’s pick: About:

WineGirl Wines opened when owner Angela Jacobs moved to

Chelan after being a laboratory manager in Oregon’s Willamette

Valley. They specialize in Bordeaux Cabernets, Pinot Grigio, and

Bordeaux style blends. WineGirl produces just under 1,000

cases of wine per year. Jacobs was involved with a roller derby

group in Seattle and decided to mix her love of roller derby with

her love of wine making. WineGirl recently released a 2013

Rose called My Derby Wife. All of the wines WineGirl produces

are named after female role models.

“It became kind of a challenge and a game to match

the fl avors of the wines with the person’s personality and

character,” Jacobs said.

They recommend…

The JoJo Stiletto Cabernet Sauvignon.

“It’s kind of dangerous,” Jacobs said. “It’s easy to drink and

it goes down smoothly.”

This wine is one of WineGirl’s newer releases and Jacobs

said it is light enough for a hot summer’s day.

Why stop by?

“Come see what a young female entrepreneur can do,”

Jacobs said. The winery is a unique haven for wine drinkers

of all levels — with professional quality wines coupled with a

welcoming atmosphere. And welcoming to all, at that. Visitors

can bring along a furry friend to WineGirl’s “Yappy Hour” event.

Dogs are allowed to play on the lawn as long as they have

leashes. Call ahead to see when it’s on. WineGirl also hosts an

annual wine release and BBQ event every year in August. Call

for details on this year’s event.
