KTK High Pressure downhole connector Canyon delivers serious improvements to an old workhorse. We all know the Kintec/KTK bulkhead connector used everywhere in MWD/LWD equipment. It is a solid work- horse, but has it’s weak points: fragile body and contacts that loosen up with use. Canyon has addressed both of those shortcomings with premium materials. The original Kintec was made with mineralized epoxy and compression molded. Basically sand and epoxy pressed together and cured. Canyon’s approach uses high temperature PEEK thermoplastic which is injection molded, producing a strong grain structure that resists cracking and breaking. Beryllium Copper makes the socket for the original Kintec connector. BeCu will not hold it’s spring tension at high temperature, and becomes loose after a few thermal cycles. (See the chart). Canyon uses a 6-finger Beryllium Nickel spring contact that retains it’s tension up to 300C. This is the right material for hot-holes and long-life. Contact Material and StressRelaxation at High Temperature

Exposure Time (Hours) @ 225˚C

Beryllium nickel exhibits little or no stress relaxation when subjected to extended exposure to high temperatures — a critical characteristic for applications operating in harsh environments.

Canyon’s contacts are made from beryllium nickel that has been heat treated to achieve ultimate spring properties. The graph illus-trates how beryllium copper loses it’s spring properties over time at a high temperature (225˚C). Thus, for burn-in applications and continuous operation above 150˚C beryllium, nickel should be substituted for beryllium copper.
