Winning on and off the mat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5Kenosha Tae Kwon Do has produced its share of national champions, but it’s not all about winning competitions. Discipline is a major point of emphasis for Master Dennis Nelson, who has approximately 100 students ranging in age from 4 to adult. While learning self-defense techniques and how to avoid confrontations, students are also taught about respect and proper behavior patterns. Local teams excel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18-21 It’s been a great week for a number of area community sports teams. Featured in the Top Teams section of this week’s edition of KSN @Play are Valeri Insurance of Little Leaguers of Kenosha, the CYC Steelers football team, the St. Joseph Catholic Academy boys and girls cross-country teams, the All Saints Catholic School fifth grade Red volleyball squad, and the ACE U12 Wizards, United FC U10 boys and United FC U11 girls soccer teams. Schools & clubs highlighted . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26-35 The spotlight is shining brightly on local schools and clubs this week. The St. Joseph Catholic Academy boys and girls cross-country teams performed well at the state meet, the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team defeated Division I Loyola (Ill.), the CYC Steelers finished a perfect season, the United FC girls Red squad captured a tournament title and the U12 ACE Wizards grabbed first place in their division.
This Week’s Highlights…
What is KSN @Play?
Contents
There is more to martial arts than just kicking and punching. This is what Master Dennis Nelson, owner and founder of the Kenosha Tae Kwon Do Club, tries to get across to those unfamiliar with the sport. He currently has roughly 100 students, starting at the age of 4 and on up through the 50s, who are well aware of the philosophy. He has had pupils as experienced in life as age 80.
Students at the school, located at 2221 63rd St., are motivated to have fun while they learn tech-niques of self-defense and what to do to avoid confrontations. Some compete at an elite national level, while others are there just to get a cardio workout and relieve some stress.
“We travel all over the country and have produced a lot of national champions,” said Nelson. “There’s millions of martial arts schools out there, but I’m very proud to say that all of our instructors are national champions. All are certified through Kukkiwon, the World Tae Kwon Do Federation headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.”
Nelson and his school have been at their current location since 1990 and were based just up the road prior. The Kenosha native has been
working at his craft for more than 40 years. He was exposed to the martial arts in his youth when he watched a competition in Chicago. It was then he became hooked and went on to become a gold medalist in Wisconsin for six consecutive years. Nelson is also president of the AAU in Wisconsin.
“I run a very tight ship,” he admitted. “We want it to be fun, but it’s all about discipline.”
The discipline Nelson speaks about goes a long way with parents who send their children to the Kenosha Tae Kwon Do Club. The martial arts form helps keep the kids on task.
“When we say ‘attention’ we mean attention,” explained Nel-son. “This means total focus and
mental discipline. We teach people to be ladies and gentlemen. You are not going to move up in rank if you don’t practice the discipline you have learned here in school, at home and out in public. Too many things are given away these days and we don’t give away a rank un-less you earn it.”
The club offers self-defense classes, seminars for coaches, pro-motional testing and opportunities to compete in regional and national competitions. Nelson also instructs members of the police department.
“The basic stretching, punching and kicking is very simple, but very effective,” said Nelson. “You walk out of here a lot more confident. Many people are not educated enough about what we do; it’s
Kids learn respect and discipline, and win a few trophies too.
Kenosha Tae Kwon Do teaches lifetime skills
4 KSN@Play Digital Magazine I Issued November 3, 2011
Kenosha Tae Kwon Do teaches lifetime skillsdefinitely not about hurting people. We teach people to treat others as you wish to be treated. Anyone can kick and punch, but not everyone is respectful and disciplined.”
Nelson does minimal advertis-ing. He feels the best advertisement is word of mouth and, considering he has been in business for de-cades and has a second school in Waupaca, that strategy has worked well. Nelson said he and his in-structors don’t just teach Tae Kwon Do and all that it represents; they live it, and others pick up on that.
The Korean martial art is wide enough in its scope that it offers something for nearly everyone.
“If people are interested, I’d encourage them to come on over and try it. There’s no commitment,” said Nelson. “The first thing people notice when they come through
our door is they feel very, very welcome. Our instructors have been with me for years and they know no other way. You’re not go-ing to be intimidated. Some places have tough guys teaching for the wrong reasons. You don’t need to be a tough guy to teach or practice Tae Kwon Do.”
The Keno-sha Tae Kwon Do Club is a 2,600-square-foot facility. The club is multi-dimen-sional in that it not only offers Tae Kwon Do, but Hapkido, cardio kick boxing and yoga. There are month-to-month
programs with no mandatory long-term contracts and discounts for college students.
“We teach a variety of skills that last for a lifetime,” concluded Nelson.
A maneuver is demonstrated.
