Small Fry never comes up too short . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5Typically, basketball players stand head and shoulders above their peers. But in Small Fry Basketball, none of the boys stands taller than 5-foot-1. The latest version of the Kenosha Small Fry team is currently being assembled, and the season will conclude with a big event in Florida.

A plethora of photos . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10-18 Another impressive set of photos is on display in the Top Photos section of this week’s edition of KSN @Play. Among those athletes portrayed in color images taken by area photog-raphers are basketball players, wrestlers and soccer players, from youngsters to college athletes.

A closer look at the teams . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 36-42 For an inside look at the grade school, high school and college basketball and wrestling teams competing in the area, take a look at the Inside Schools section of this week’s edition of KSN @Play. There you’ll find the details on games played by the All Saints, Christian Life and UW-Parkside basketball teams, as well as Christian Life and Parkside wrestling competitions.

Small Fry Basketball providing hoop dreams for shorter youth

International Small Fry Basketball has been around since 1968. The organization provides an opportuni-ty for shorter boys and girls to excel in the game of basketball. Boys between the ages of 9-12 must be 5-foot-1-inch tall or shorter, and Rookie level players must be 4-foot-11 and shorter.

Jeff Milkie is the executive direc-tor of Kenosha Small Fry. In fact, he runs the entire International Small Fry program, and has done so since 1998. When asked why he would assume such a daunting task, Milkie responded, “When you see the looks on the faces of the kids, it makes you want to be a part of it.”

Each Small Fry franchise is managed at the city level. Locally, Small Fry tryouts take place in early to mid-December, and players must not have

turned 13 prior to Sept. 1, 2011. One or two rookie teams will be formed, based on the turnout, along with a varsity team. Rookie teams do not travel.

At season’s end, Small Fry teams get together for a colossal tourna-ment on the Walt Disney campus in Orlando, Fla. The 2012 event is slated for April 9-12.

“It’s like a big family when you get down there,” said Milkie. “The officials, players, coaches and their families are all one. Everybody inter-acts with each other at all times.

“Many adults who have played Small Fry will tell you that the trip to Florida is their most memorable ex-perience as a child. You see middle class kids mix with lower income

kids. If a player’s family can’t afford a flight, we pay for it. Some may never board a plane again.”

Local Small Fry squads compete in seven area tournaments. Many of the tourneys are national qualifiers.

“We are pretty competitive in the Midwest,” said Milkie of the Kenosha contingent. “It’s very com-petitive down in Florida. The teams from Puerto Rico have been domi-nating and we even have a team from the Virgin Islands coming this season.”

A total of 1,200 to 1,400 kids participate in International Small Fry, encompassing teams from the Midwest, East Coast, Chicagoland and Puerto Rico.

Funding is a necessity in keep-ing such a widespread endeavor going. Tournament ad booklets house businesses that sponsor Small Fry, and they are large in number.

“Spon-sors know the money goes to the kids,” said Milkie. “Plus, what makes us go is we have a very commit-

ted board of directors and volunteers, many of which have been with us through the years. Some of our board members have been with us for 30 to 35 years.”

The game on the floor is essentially played with all guards with no mismatches. The hoops are 8½ feet high, versus the conventional 10-foot goal.

“The shorter hoop teaches them to shoot the right way,” explained Milkie. “It doesn’t throw off their shot like a lot of people think.”

Evidence of Milkie’s claim is all the college and NBA players who have come through Small Fry. On the local level, former NBA star Nick Van Exel honed his craft in Small Fry.

“Small Fry is run well and has good, quality basketball at a young age,” said Milkie. “High school coaches often tell us they can tell a kid went through Small Fry based on how they positively react in close games.”

Milkie said Small Fry is looking to start a girls tournament in Florida. This would be for girls who are 5-foot-3-inches and shorter. This could come to fruition in Kenosha very soon, de-pending on player interest.

More information can be obtained by contacting Milk-ie at [email protected] or by visiting the Interna-tional Small Fry website at http://smallfrybasketball.com/index.html.
