Rather than letting this disability get the best of him, the Bullen Middle School eighth grader not only participates in sports, he excels in them. The Little Leaguers of Kenosha All-Star has received an expert certification in rockwall climbing and is a good swimmer and surfer.

Alex Dages overcoming the odds to succeed in sports and life
September 4, 2011, is the 18th anniversary of one of the most remarkable occurrences in Major League Baseball history. On that day at Yankee Stadium, New York pitcher Jim Abbott threw a no-hit-ter against Cleveland. It marked the first time a player born with only one hand accomplished that feat.
It may not be the last time.
Despite the fact that Abbott had been chosen as the nation’s best amateur athlete in 1987, some considered his rapid elevation to the majors in 1989 a publicity stunt. He quickly proved them wrong, win-ning 12 games in his rookie season with the Angels and posting 18 wins in 1991.
Certainly no one looks at Alex Dages’ participation in Little Leagu-ers of Kenosha or Hitters Baseball as a publicity stunt. The 12-year-old, who like Abbott was born with-out a right hand, produced a .520 batting average, four home runs and 37 RBI for Cicchini Asphalt this summer, as well as 93 strikeouts on the mound. When not pitching, Alex plays first base or the outfield.
Not surprisingly, the Somers resident was voted to the American League All-Star team in 2011. He went 1-for-2 in the contest with an RBI double.
“I think Alex is one of the hard-est throwing kids in the league,” said Mike Sigman, coach of the 12-year-old A.L. tournament travel
team. “He’s not just dominant with his fastball, he shows finesse. He also hits the ball harder with one arm than over half of the kids in the league do with two arms.”
Ross McCoy, a coach with the Hitters Baseball organization that Alex recently joined, concurs.
“Alex is a very competitive player, especially on the mound. I like the way he competes,” McCoy said. “He throws very hard for his age. He’s got a great arm. And with the bat, he gets in there and laces the ball.”
Determined to succeed Alex, entering eighth grade at
Bullen Middle School, was born near St. Petersburg in Russia and was adopted by Bob Dages and Ju-
liette Garesche at 14 months of age. The family lived in New England un-til moving to the Midwest in 2003.
“We watched videos of Alex from when he was 9 months old, and you could see his ambition even then,” Bob said. “You could tell he was determined to do all the things that infants try to do, even without a right hand. We saw a child with a small hand, but we also observed a child with a big heart.
“Alex has never been one to not try things. He looks at life as, we’ll try everything and see if it works. If not, we’ll try other things. For example, he likes music and took guitar lessons, and while he learned the chords, it was not something he wanted to pursue further. But

he likes rockwall climbing and has received an expert certification in it. He’s also a very good swimmer.”
Alex, whose favorite baseball team is the Chicago White Sox, is known for saying what he thinks and for his high level of intensity. He said he learned early on about his physical condition.
“I remember thinking that it was not cool that I had only one working hand, but I wasn’t bitter or angry about it,” he said. “I learned right away that there was nothing I could do about it. Some people treat me differently because of it and some kids make fun of me for it. But I don’t care. Actually, there are things I can do that a lot of other people can’t do.
“My teammates have been very supportive this season. I’m happy and honored that they voted me to the All-Star team. And my coaches
have been supportive and helpful as well. They’ve taught me a lot and encouraged me.”
hard work pays offAlex said he knows that he will
always have to work harder than everyone else to get where he wants to be.
“One of the things I like about Alex,” McCoy said, “is that he’s not afraid to take constructive criticism. He wants to improve even more, and that’s very uplifting.”
“Alex is very coachable and
eager to learn,” Sigman said. “His hard work has paid off. People need to know that a disability does not define them. I think Alex will go far if he keeps the same attitude, whether it’s sports or something else.”
Will Alex Dages ever throw a no-hitter in the majors? Don’t bet against it. But even if he doesn’t, his determination to succeed against the odds will be an inspira-tion to others...just as Jim Abbott’s accomplishments have inspired the sports world.
Alex is an avid swimmer and surfer.

The U1� Kenosha Crew won its first tour-nament of the season in dramatic fashion at the Battle on the Border Soc-cer Tournament, defeating Libertyville Premier Black on penalty kicks.
The U1� Kenosha Crew soccer team secured an-other Battle on the Border tournament championship last weekend. This marked the fifth time in seven years that this group of girls has won the tournament.

After a scoreless first half, Messmer got on the scoreboard in the 48th minute, only to see a ferocious comeback by the home team. The Eagles scored in the 63rd and 73rd minute of the contest to win the match.

For the first time in four years, the U12 ACE Kenosha Wizards passed on the Battle of the Border and tested their abilities at an elite tournament. The team competed in the Chicago Fire Soccer Club Tournament in Highland Park, Ill., last weekend and took second place. The local boys went undefeated in bracket play.

The U16 Kenosha Crew won its first tournament of the season in dramatic fashion at the Battle on the Border Soccer Tourna-ment, defeating Libertyville Premier Black on penalty kicks. Regulation play ended in a 0-0 deadlock before the Crew kicked its way to the title. The Crew won all four of its games in securing the championship. Colleen Bray takes a shot.

In recent United States Tennis Association (USTA)- sanctioned tournaments, a group of local players fared well. One youth tennis player earned a first place finish at the Kenosha Fall Classic, while two others placed first the following week.

Juan Perez took first-place at the Kenosha Fall Classic Aug. 21, winning his semifinal match 6-1, 6-2 before triumphing in a thrilling final 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 (tiebreaker). Rachel Anderson earned first-place honors by winning her semifinal match in shutout fashion 6-0, 6-0 before winning the finals convincingly 6-1, 6-0 the following week. Rachel’s brother, Patrick Anderson, grabbed first at the same event in the age 16 and under division. It was his first competition in that category.

The United FC soccer club hosed the 11th annual Battle on the Border Soccer Tournament Aug. 27-28 at Kenosha’s Anderson Field. More than 140 youth teams from Wisconsin and Illinois participated with over 500 games played on a perfect weekend for soccer. Two competition levels in appropriate age groups were formed and each team played at least three games. Kenosha champions included United FC U9 boys Red, United FC U10 boys Red, United FC U14 boys Red and Kenosha Crew U15/16 girls and U17/18 girls. Kenosha runner-up teams were United FC U8 coed Black, United FC U10 boys Gray, United FC U11 boys Gray, United FC U12 boys Red, United FC U13 girls Red and United FC U18 girls Red.
