Indoor flag football appeals to a wide variety of ages
The new state-of-the-art facility at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha has received plenty of play since its doors opened recently. The indoor surface, which is 65 yards long from baseline to baseline, has brought soccer players out of the woodwork for the adult fall league’s recently completed season.
The facility houses more than just indoor soccer. Lacrosse and rugby teams and leagues are in the works, and flag football is off to a roaring start. Flag football is played by boys and girls, as well as adults without having to deal with the outside ele-ments, which are beginning to take a turn for the worse.
“We started a league in conjunc-tion with Kenosha Area Athletics,” explained Steve Milkie, who over-sees the flag football program. “It was a K-8 league which played on Saturday mornings from September through October and had about 80 kids involved. We had no clue as to how many kids we would get. We just threw it out there and waited to see what the response would be.”
The response was solid for an initial venture. Many of the partici-pants came from the west end of the county. Plus, the league was formed quickly with little advance notice, which suggests it will be much larger in the future.
The fall flag football league played its games on Saturday mornings, as did the Boys & Girls Club’s tackle football league, which plays out-doors. Milkie said the two are not in competition with each other; rather the club now offers another option for the young football enthusiast.
“Some parents are either afraid of injury or just don’t feel their kid is ready for tackle football,” reasoned Milkie. “Flag football is a good way to see if you are interested in playing football. And, some people just like flag football better.”
Other leagues in the mixA middle school league is un-
derway and runs on consecutive Wednesdays through Dec. 21. This league is more of a pick-up league in nature. A total of 18 kids are signed up and show up to play for an hour each week. Sides are chosen and they have at it. Another middle school league, along with a high school league, is planned for the winter, starting in February. An adult league is in the mix, starting play on Nov. 5. They will play 10 consecutive Saturdays and have six teams of 14 players each.
Milkie has had conversations with area high school football coaches. There are some hurdles to jump over with the WIAA, but once all that is worked out, high school athletes will have a viable football option in their off-season.
New Boys & Girls Club facility the perfect venue for non-contact sport

Indoor flag football appeals to a wide variety of agesNew Boys & Girls Club facility the perfect venue for non-contact sport
“It keeps the high school kids practicing routes, throwing the ball, catching the ball and staying active with the sport,” noted Milkie. “It gives them that football mentality year-round, which can only help the high school football programs.”
The indoor game itself is a seven-on-seven format. Thanks to Milkie’s innovation, the walls and the netting are in play, as is the ceiling on punts, much like an arena league. There are no kickoffs, and teams start their possession just outside their own end zone. If the offensive team reaches midfield, they earn a first down.
Blocking is not allowed. Players can screen off opposing players, much like a basketball player would set a screen.
“We don’t want full-out colli-sions,” said Milkie. “That’s where problems start. We want to run
clean games with no fighting or anything even close to that.”
Kids are placed on teams and given a coach to work with. Adults go out and get a sponsor and come in as a team, just like a recreation softball or basketball team does in the city leagues, for example.
For more information on the flag football program at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha (1330 52nd Street), check out its website at www.bgckenosha.org or call 262-654-6200 and ask for the Sports Department.

On Friday night, Nov. 11, the U8 Crew team competed against Mexico in a hard fought game. Mexico got the up-per hand in goals scored in the game, but this was a great test for the girls. The Crew did a nice job of connecting on passes and moving in space. Rylie Reget and Mia Crabtree led on the defensive side of the ball. Megan Jankowski, Livie Lehman and Marty Harrington played solid in the midfield third. Scores are not kept at this level.
