from the desK of the potentate

by Illustrious Potentate John H. Gailey

    Illustrious Potentate John H. Gailey

There has been so many exciting happenings over the past three months and May, June, and July have become a blur. It all started with the Potentate’s trip in May.

In May there were 40 Nobles, their ladies and friends who, having the pioneer spirit, ventured east of the Mississippi River to the land of South Dakota. Having been asked numerous times “why are you going to South Dakota?” I can tell you first hand it was one of the best trips that I have ever been on. We had the chance to see Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse sculptures, the Black Hills and the Badlands. Each venue provided its own awesome experience for the traveler. In addition to the itinerary of the trip, we were treated to an evening of hospitality by our brothers of Naja Shrine. Many great memories were made during this great visit to South Dakota.

In June, we had our annual Summer Ceremonial in Skowhegan. There were 200+ Nobles and their ladies in attendance for the two-day event. The campers started coming in on Thursday and excitement for the weekend began to swell throughout the fairgrounds. Friday offered white water rafting, golf, and a brewery tour. We finished the day with Karaoke and dancing. On Saturday, we registered 15 new candidates who started the day off leading the parade down the main street of Skowhegan. Nice easy stroll. I want to thank our Kora Units for their participation. As a result, we provided a “top draw” parade for the citizens of Skowhegan. Following the parade, the ladies were treated to a luncheon in “Grandma’s Flower Garden” offered by First Lady Phyllis. At 1:00 pm we opened the temple with the First Section presented by our Kora Kraftsman. They did a great job of providing our candidates with impressive ritual work. Following the First Section, the Second Section

took over with their own style of work on the candidates. That evening, after an excellent meal of lobster and steak provided by the York County Shrine Club, some of us were challenged to become hypnotized and some just had a good nap. Just saying! All of this would not have been possible without the great work of Tim Luttrell, our Director General who was great with the details, Brian Robbins, our Ceremonial Chairman, Bernie McAllister, Units Colonel and Mike Higgins Lt. Colonel, Randy Murray, Master Handyman, Tony Perkins, Camping Chairman, the Kora Greeters, Al Smith and the Aides, and the “guys” of the Second Section who oversaw the moving of equipment and other details to keep things running smoothly. Finally, to all those who attended the event, thank you for making it a great weekend.

Now we are in July and your representatives, treasurer, recorder and Emeritus Past Potentate Karl Finnimore joined forces at the 143rd Imperial Session of Shrine International. We were joined by John Mellor, Wayne Akeley, Cliff Littlefield and Bob Leighton. These nobles along with Karl Finnimore PP. had the pleasure of driving the mini racers around the Daytona Speedway. John Mellor had his wildest dream come true! In addition to this excitement, we managed to get the Unit in the Imperial Parade on Tuesday evening. Driving the cars were John Mellor, Wayne Akeley, Cliff Littlefield, Bob Leighton, Sonny Jutras, Karl Finnimore, P.P., Barry Gates, PP, and yours truly. What a great experience! We even managed to get on the front page of the local newspaper the next morning.

We have just finished our 28th Maine Lobster Bowl Classic at a new venue – Thornton Academy Hill Field. The weather was with us, the teams were well prepared, and the game had some very exciting moments even though the score was lopsided. These fine student-athletes gave their all in the support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The game was preceded by a Walk for Love and parade through Biddeford and Saco. I understand that the game drew the largest crowd to date. Colby Furrow from Mountain View High School raised the most money totaling $11,000.00. This brings a two-year total of over $21,000.00 raised by the communities of Mountain View High School. I want to thank the Lobster Bowl Board of Governors, and Committee for another fine presentation of football in our great State of Maine.

Items to mark on your calendar: August: Western Mountain S.C. annual visitation with temple parade on August 12th, Northeast Shrine Field Days, August 18,19, and 20th, Kora Kares Ride-In, August 26th at Twitchell’s September: Country Ho-Down, September 9th at Kora Temple, Ladies Appreciation Night, September 23rd, September 30th, Scottish Rite and Kora Shriners One Day Class.

October: Octoberfest on October 7th at Kora Temple, Second Section Auction on October 21st, Open House and Presentation of the Arch Degree, October 28th.

I want to thank you for your support through the first half of the year and look forward to its continuance through the remaining months ahead.

    Fraternally yours, John

    mission

The mission of the Kora Shrine Center Foundation is to raise funds to preserve, protect and maintain the historic Kora Shrine Center and its significant artwork.

The Foundation will raise capital to help underwrite the real estate related costs associated with maintaining and preserving the Kora Shrine Center. All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible under IRS Code 170. Donors will be entitled to declare their contribution as a charitable gift. Please consult your tax advisor,

The Foundation welcomes gifts of cash, invested securities such as stocks and bonds, real estate, collectables, and life insurance proceeds. Multi-year pledge-giving is also an option for donors. Please consider the Foundation in your estate planning. Example: pledge-give $1,000/year for the next 5 years, payable in lump-sum or installments. Representatives of the Foundation are anxious to meet with Nobles, and or their families, to discuss these and other giving-options.

As I’m just returning from an exciting and informative Imperial Session, I bring you an important message from our new Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske.

membership, membership, membership! As many of you know, membership has been declining for

several years. The fraternity in general is at its lowest membership in many years. This is the year we must turn it around.

It is the will and pleasure of our Imperial Potentate, to bring in twelve thousand new Nobles into our one hundred and ninety-eight temples, during his year.

His new slogan is, i am committed, ru?This would be an increase of about five percent for each

temple. We at Kora need to do our share. Based on our current membership, that means we need to bring in nearly one hundred new Nobles within the imperial year, which is now through early July of next year. That would mean one new noble for every twenty of us. When broken down in this way, this is a very achievable goal providing everyone does their part.

The Divan or Membership Team cannot do it alone…if you are not sure where to start, here are some suggestions on how you can do your part to support this goal:

Spread the word about the world class hospital system we have and the events Kora sponsors to raise money and bring awareness to the great work done there.

Let them read your copy of the Sands and Maine Mason.Inform Brethren of the one day Scottish Rite class and

Shrine initiation to be on September 30th.Inform and invite everyone you know to the Ride-In and

Membership Appreciation on August 26th at Twitchels Airport. This is open to everybody.

Attend meetings at your Masonic Lodges. This would not only help us, but your lodges as well.

Bring your friends to fellowship events in your lodge and to Shrine events. Show them the comradery, fun and fellowship we share. Let us all take a pledge to accomplish this necessary goal to increase our fraternity to a healthy membership level.

If you know someone that would make a good Mason or Shriner, send in a referral to the Imperial Membership Team. You can do this by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help us in making these good men Nobles of the Shrine.

Remember that for any person you are a first line signer for, we will give you one free entry into the drawing for a life membership at KORA, to be drawn December 2, 2017.

I am committed to doing everything I can to accomplish this, R U?

Regards to everyone and thank you for helping us reach our goal.

Kora cash calendar(Cash Calendar Committee: Gary Robinson, Bob Doyle, Pete Provencher, Ryan

    Sherman, Rob Madore)

We trust that everyone has been enjoying their summer full of sun, parades, barbeques, family and friends.

During the summer months we have enjoyed continued success with the Cash Calendar. We have been fortunate enough to pay out winnings everyday to some great supporters of the Kora Shrine.

In our first year we were able to pay out $9,760 in winnings and we were also able to present checks for donations to The Kora Transportation Fund, The Boston Shriners Hospital, The Springfield Shriners Hospital, and The Kora Temple WiFi Project! We are already planning for the work we can perform with the proceeds from 2018 and are looking forward to another successful year.

With that being said we are already ramping up for our 2018 Cash Calendar!! We currently have tickets on sale and we encourage you to visit our Facebook page for more information (www.facebook.com/KoraCashCalendar/). If any Noble wishes to assist in selling tickets we are offering a free ticket for every 10 tickets sold. Sell 100 tickets and earn yourself 10 chances to win all year long!

So thank you all, please like our Facebook page and feel free to share posts to increase awareness of the Kora Shrine and Shriners International, and we looked forward to your continued support.

Your membership team is holding a raffle, for a full lifetime membership to KORA Shriners. The tickets are 10.00. The money raised will be for membership education and development. The drawing will be December 2nd at the elections. You need not be present to win. Bring a new member to Kora, and the membership team will buy the first line singer one ticket for entry into the drawing. For tickets email: membership@ kora shriners.org or call the temple at 207-782-6831. We will make sure you get them.

Re-wire Cells to Produce Arthritis Vaccine

New SMART cell method provides hope for

improved treatment of chronic conditions in kids and adults

Using a new gene-editing technology, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis and Washington University School of Medicine have re-wired living cells to produce their own targeted arthritis-fighting vaccine. These SMART (stem cells modified for autonomous regenerative therapy) cells could offer more targeted treatment options for children and adults with inflammatory and chronic conditions.

Unlike current arthritis medications that are given continuously and at high doses, these SMART cells can sense arthritis inflammation in a particular joint and make their own natural antidote to combat it, as needed. The research was published in the May 9 issue of the journal, Stem Cell Reports.

“For children with juvenile arthritis, this breakthrough could have significant benefits as many of the current treatment options cause unwanted side effects and may not be appropriate for children,” said Farshid Guilak, Ph.D., research senior author, director of research for the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and professor of orthopaedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. “Our goal is to deliver a therapy that is self-regulating and targeted specifically to inflammation in a particular joint, as opposed to current drug therapies that impact the immune response throughout the entire body.”

our fracture clinic is open for business!

To date, SMART cells have only been engineered in a laboratory using cells from mice. Human clinical trials are still a few years away. The SMART cell method could also revolutionize treatments for many other conditions.

Shriners Hospitals opened the Pediatric Musculoskeletal Research Center in St. Louis in 2016. Last year, a Shriners Hospitals’ research team lead by Dr. Guilak created a living tissue hip joint replacement for patients currently receiving synthetic replacement joints that eventually wear out. This advancement is key for children who need replacement joints since a living joint could grow with the child. SMART cell technology is also being combined with this discovery to grow a living joint with these same disease-fighting properties.

“The hope is that we can grow living bone, cartilage and whole joints that are resistant to arthritis and eventually other inflammatory diseases too,” said Dr. Guilak. “This could help adults and children suffering from juvenile, rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis, as well as other orthopaedic conditions.”

In honor of 2017 Nurses Week, the nursing staff and members of patient care services collected items for care packages for our military nursing peers who are serving oversees. This was the second year the team put togther the packages and hopefully this tradition will continue as long as we have troops serving

    2017 nurses WeeK

It's time to get the word out! Our fracture clinic is open and ready for business. From collisions on the field to falls at home, accidents happen. We’re here to help.

The fracture clinic provides comprehensive fracture care Monday through Friday except on holidays. The clinic is tai-lored to the specific needs of each patient including x-ray, cast-ing, post-fracture follow-up, surgery and rehabilitation when-

ever necessary. Fracture clinic patients need to come in with a referral form from a physician or nurse practitioner and bring an X-ray report/image on a disk, if one was taken.

oversees. The group sent out a total of 10 boxes of toiletries, snacks, hand warmers, socks and other needed supplies. Many thanks to all who participated.

When I was born I started having seizures and ended up really ill. I was in and out of the hospitals for weeks. My mom says almost everything was delayed: sitting up, walking, and holding a cup or fork. By age 9, I could pedal a bike, but not

    very well.At age 10, I was diagnosed

with a mild heart condition. In January of my sixth grade year, I was trying on something for my mom and she noticed at my rib area I was very straight on one side and a little curvy on the other. She kind of shrugged it off and told herself that no one is exactly the same on both sides of their body.

Two weeks later, I had a scoliosis screening at my

    springfield hospital happenings

    fracture care clinic update

As part of the Springfield Shriners Hospital’s five year strategic plan 2016-2020 and in response to a growing need in the community, the hospital debuted a fracture care clinic on September 1, 2016. Since its start, the fracture care clinic has surpassed 1,000 patient encounters. On June 22, the outpatient department welcomed the 500th new fracture care patient to clinic. Fourteen month old Gabriel and his family were presented with a few special gifts in recognition of this hospital-wide achievement. Implementing a new clinic took much planning and the hard work of many staff members. The Shriners Hospital team is happy to be filling a need in the community and taking care of kids with simple and complex fractures.

school. After I bent over for the school nurse, she told me that I needed to be checked by my doctor. I burst out crying. I knew that instant I had scoliosis. My mom took me to see my pediatrician, and when I bent over she said I definitely had curving, but I needed an x-ray and should see the doctors at the Springfield Shriners Hospital.

I was so upset, my mom took me that night for my x-ray, and she made the appointment right away with Shriners Hospital. My mom told me that she grew up right across the street from Shriners Hospital and that it was a wonderful place. She is also president of a firefighter’s educational group that goes there once or twice a year, and she told me how amazing the care is.

At my first appointment at Shriners Hospital the doctor was very thorough, because I already had some other medical issues. This reassured my mom a lot. The doctor told me that I needed to wear a brace from 8 pm until I got up in the morning. The brace would not fix my curves, but should keep them from getting worse as I grew. I was sent right over to the Prosthetics Department where I was custom fit for my own brace. They let me pick the pattern or color I wanted, and I went with fish, because I was (and still am) obsessed with marine life. I went back a few weeks later and picked up the brace. When we tried it on, I cried it was so stiff and rigid. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. It went from my armpit to my waist. I was told I would get used to it. The first few nights I begged my mom to not make me wear it. I could only wear a tank top and shorts, all my cute sleep clothes were gone! I cried myself to sleep. It was just so uncomfortable. Within 10 days I could fall asleep like I had before, just like they promised me.

The doctor also felt that my upper back was very weak and one of my legs had very tight muscles. I went for physical therapy every Friday for several months. I also had to start wearing a brace during the day to school. I felt it was ugly and it went on over my clothes and buckled at my knees. I wouldn’t wear it. I had a great teacher who talked to me and the class, and then I wore it every day.

After a growth spurt, I grew out of my brace. I called up, they took me right in and they made me a new brace, no questions asked. This time I went with Cheetah Print! I loved it. I took that brace to every vacation or sleepover.

Through all of this, I have participated on a competitive dance team. Last year I was first runner-up in my age group and dance category at two different competitions.

You can see my extra curves any time I wear a bathing suit or dance wear. I don’t try to hide them. It is who I am and how I look, but sometimes I worry that competition judges will think I have bad form or bad posture, and points will be deducted, but that is out of my hands.

On January 7th, I participated in the Miss Western Massachusetts’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. I had a private interview, danced in the opening number, participated in the fitness routine, performed my talent, (dance) and answered the on stage question. When they called my name, I was so surprised. Since then, everything has been so exciting. I have been invited to volunteer at many different events. I plan on wearing my crown and sash at this year’s (Shriners Hospital) “Walk for Love.” Hopefully I will be able to answer phones this year at the Radiothon.

My journey with Shriners Hospital is not yet over; right now, it is “wait and see.” I know that without them, my life would be very different, and I am so grateful that such high quality care is available, so close to home. Even when my journey with Shriners Hospital ends, I will always be a “Shriners Kid.”

    medical home communication

a top priorityShriners Hospitals for Children-Springfield regards

communication with our families’ medical homes as a top priority in promoting optimal outcomes in care.

Towards that end, a new process for notifying referring providers and primary care providers of no-show and canceled appointments for new and established appointments has been implemented.

A report is generated on a weekly basis and notification by mail is then initiated. Routinely, the family is contacted and invited to reschedule by phone and mail; however, now the primary care provider will be aware if there has not been a reschedule.

For some time now, Springfield Shriners Hospitals has been notifying referring providers, by mail, once the appointment has been scheduled for first time patients.

Transcription of dictated notes is centralized within the 22-hospital system and thus expedites the process. As a process quality measure, the turnaround times for clinical notes sent out to primary care providers is monitored routinely.

Please note that the referring provider and primary care provider, when they are unique, each gets a copy of the first visit note. Subsequent to that, all follow up notes are sent out exclusively to the primary care provider/medical home, unless specific request is made to the Health Information Management Department. For any questions, please contact Pam Rau at 413-735-1233.

We are available to any lodge from Waterville to Kittery for the purpose of conferring the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft or Master Mason degree. In addition, we are also available to install lodge officers.

MIDCOAST SHRINE CLUB AT THE UNION FAIR Since 1993 (24 years), the Union Fair has been a meeting place for Rockwell Amusements, the Midcoast Shrine Club, and many participants of area group homes of challenged adults who eagerly look forward to this annual event. The group homes are invited and the head count information is collected by the Midcoast Shrine Club and provided to the Union Fair. On the designated date, the midway is opened at 10:00 A.M. for this private special event. Our Shrine volunteers are busy greeting the participants, un-loading the vans, escorting the participants on rides, helping them on and off rides, and sometimes even going on the rides with the delighted participants. We average 150 to 175 participants. At noon, Rockwell Amusements provides lunch and a gift for all special participants at the park. The Shrine members help pass lunch out and visit with the participants. Year after year many hugs are given by the participants to their favorite Shriner! The event wraps up by 1:30 P.M. For many of our special participants this annual event is the highlight and favorite trip of their year. As a Shrine volunteer, this is a heartfelt and incredible experience. If you would care to volunteer and join us for special event, meet at the Union Fair gate just off Route 17 in Union on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 9:30 A.M. and wear your fez. It is an amazing experience you will never forget! Jon Burns, Coordinator 207-592-8051.

money raised went to lady phyllis’s project.

The Summer Ceremonials are always a fun time. This year a group of Shriners and members of their family got a chance to go white water rafting. We boarded the bus and travel to Moxie Outdoors Adventure on Moxie Lake. We suited up and attended a safety program. After that it was on the bus and to the put in at the Wyman Dam. After a wild ride down the Kennebec River and a quick stop for lunch with a steak and chicken feed that was really good. The reminder of the trip was nice and relaxing with a lot of conversation. This gives new meaning to being a Shriner and having fun. Special thanks to High Priest and Prophet Brain and Robin Robbins who worked on setting this up.

boston ducK tours brings fun and learning to team braveOn a beautiful Thursday afternoon,

Team Brave gathered to learn and explore the city on a Boston Duck Tour. Duck Tours are a popular activity for tourists and residents alike, traveling through the streets and waterways of Boston in an amphibious vehicle. Patients, staff and volunteers from the Boston Firefighter Burn Foundation had the chance to take a narrated sightseeing tour, passing by popular attractions, including the Old North Church, Boston Common and the Public Gardens, while learning little known facts about Boston’s rich history. Members of Team Brave had a chance to experience the Duck Tour’s themes of, “freedom, fun, firsts, and ‘fabulousity,’”

while emphasizing Team Brave’s own motto to “Engage. Encourage. Empower.”Now on its third year, Team Brave is a community reintegration program that takes small groups of patients with

varying injuries on bi-weekly recreational outings throughout the city with volunteers from the Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation (BFFBF). Team Brave is funded by the BFFBF and firefighters volunteer to attend each outing.

Incorporating both physical and psychological therapy, these outings offer a social way for patients to practice the skills they have learned to cope with their injuries in a community setting. Field trips have included yoga, bowling, rock climbing, rowing and painting, which all allow patients to have fun alongside Boston Shriners Hospital staff and firefighters. Team Brave embodies positivity and courage, providing children with the confidence to succeed in social settings, no matter what obstacles are before them.

The Boston Duck Tour certainly brought fun and learning to Team Brave. Patients, staff and firefighters alike enjoyed spectacular views of the Boston skyline from the Charles River, learned about Boston’s role in the American Revolution and quacked at fellow duck tours through the streets of Boston. Patients even had the opportunity to drive the boat through the Charles River! Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston would like to thank the firefighters who volunteered from the Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation and Boston Duck Tours for such a fun and educational outing!

shrine clubsSome members may not be aware of the presence of

local shrine clubs in Koraland. Shrine clubs for years have been a way to further extend the fellowship of our fraternity. Clubs are localized to certain communities, making it more convenient for our nobles and their ladies to gather and socialize on a more frequent basis. Membership is open to any noble; you are welcome to join any shrine club you wish regardless of your home location. Shrine clubs generally meet in the Fall, Winter and Spring, moving functions outside for the summer months. Membership is extended to brand new nobles

for no dues assessment during their first calendar year as a shriner. Many newer members do not get the opportunity to experience all that the fraternity has to offer, these club meetings are a great way to meet fellow nobles and ladies.

This article should stand as an open invitation to all nobles not currently a member of a shrine club to seek out their local group, contact the person listed in this article and join in the camaraderie. The following clubs are actively meeting and welcoming new members.

See inside front cover for contact information.

Where has the Summer gone? Here I am a few days before the Lobster Bowl thinking about the fall 2017 and the importance of our summer activities.

For the units that participated in the Summer Ceremonial, thank you for your units commitment to travel to Skowhegan. I know that some new Nobles have indicated that they are interested in joining a unit and hopefully by now they have made contact with that Unit Director. In late June we ventured to La Kermasse in Biddeford and that resulted in a $2,500.00 dollar donation for our hospoitals. Thanks you Units that helped us achieve that donation.

On May 13th, our annual screening clinics were held at the Brunswick, Lewiston and Biddeford Areas.

Many thanks to the Nobles that have continually staffed these locations and their dedication to attempt to help the children in these areas. We will work harder to get more help in staffing our other locations.

On May 6th, the New England School Nurses held their annual conference at the Holiday Inn in Portland. Participating in the conference were the Boston and Springfield staff providing information about the services that we provide children. They made contacts with many of the Nurses. While representing Kora at the convention, I spoke with a Nurse from the Skowhegan area who was very interested in helping set up a clinic in Skowhegan. We have not held a clinic in this area for some time and this is an area that our services would help the children. The Physician Liaison, Susan Tapases also made contact with the new Head of the State School Nurses and is sending hospital updates to her for the School Nurses newsletter.

For the past two years, there has been a fundraising effort at the University of Maine by the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. One of their members, who graduated last year, was a patient at the Springfield Shriners Hospital and wanted to organize a fundraiser to benefit the Shriners Hospitals. The event was a Battle Ball tournament. It is a soccer game with team members inside huge plastic balls. It is very entertaining! I represented

On July 15 we are off to the Lobster Bowl and a new Lobster Bowl Parade/Walk for Love. With the new location there will be some adjustment to this years game. On July 21st we return to the Yarmouth Clam Festival Parade. Particpation in this parade happened because we engaged in a discussion with Yarmouth Chamber Officials. We are hopeful that this will continue again next year.

In August we will travel to Ottawa Canada for the NSA. I am certain that we will once again shine at the NSA. Our new Hillbilly Club will have a number of new members when we return. Information about this new club will be done through the Kora Connections, so stay tuned for more information about Kora’s newest club. FMI on the Hillbilly speak with Noble Chris DiSotto.

By September the proposed by laws for the newest club, the ATV Club will have been presented to the Divan. Their first event will be the Shrine Football Game. Noble John Hutchins is working on the formation of this new club and has some great idea for the club to do rides and particpate in parades. Dear Nobles and Ladies,Where did the summer go? Here we are with fall fast

approaching! Summer Ceremonial at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds in June started our parade season with much fun and fanfare. Crazy Cops had a busy summer with at least one parade almost every week. NSA in Ottawa CA was the highlight of the summer with anticipation building early and stories of celebration and camaraderie continuing even now. Crazy Cops know there is no time to rest though! Peek foliage is almost upon us, and the Feztival of Trees will be here in no time. We already have many ideas swirling for our tree. We would like to take this moment to welcome our newest Crazy Cop, Sean Dyer, to both our unit and to Kora Shrine; Sean became a noble at the Summer Ceremonial.

At our May 1st, 2017 meeting at the Union Masonic Hall, Jeff Curtis, former Flag Unit Director, stepped forward to be our new Treasurer. Thank you very much Jeff! Larry Grady had to step down as Treasurer due to health issues.

On behalf of all the Flag Unit members, past and present, our sincere thanks and appreciation to Larry for his untiring dedication these past 20 years as Treasurer. He did an outstanding job.

We have enjoyed marching in our scheduled parades this summer. We are a proud Unit(we march so that weak legs may walk).

So we are at the beginning of the parade season. We have participated in a few parades so far with more to come. I also just finished participating in the Lobster Bowl parade and game. The parade was a little on the light side but the game appeared to have really good turn out. At least when I left.

As for our next few parades we have Casco Days and Rockland Lobser Festival. Hope to see you at our future parades.

    greetersBy Craig Rubner, Scribe

Here we are and summer is flying by. Seems to me that while growing up, between fishing and ball games with friends, and all the other things we did those hot summer days seemed to last forever. The Greeters have been busy too. The Summer Ceremonial in Skowhegan was a great success. The location at the fairgrounds worked out wonderfully. All the events that the Ceremonial committee pulled together were a lot of fun and very well coordinated. Between Golfing, the Brewery tour to the Ladies luncheon and White water rafting trip everyone had an opportunity to have a great time. I can personally say that the white water rafting trip was a very exciting adventure.

On another note the Greeters recently recognized two of our brethren. On May 31st, Tom Ray and Crawford Perry and their ladies met Pop and Norma Gilbert for lunch at Rolandeaus.

While there they presented him with the 100 Million Dollar Club certificate for all he has done for Kora and the Greeters. Pop and Norma will soon be moving to the Midwest and live closer to family. So if you get the chance say Hi and wish them well. On June 19th, Tom Ray, Tom Boyer and Crawford Perry presented Eileen Paine with a certificate for the 100 Million Dollar Club in memory of her husband and our friend, Lewis Paine.

By the time you read this in the Sands we will have been to the Lobster Bowl at Thornton Academy and will be getting ready for the Kora Kares Ride In. The Ride In keeps getting better each year. So along with the motorcycle, ATV rides, and classic cars if you are want to enjoy some really good Barbecue and listen to the band this is the event for you. Soon we will be meeting to plan for the Feztival Of Trees. I hope all of you enjoy the rest of your summer and look forward to seeing you soon.

highlanders by Everett Kaherl, PP, Scribe

The Kora Highlanders have begun their busy summer’s work with Memorial Day parades and the annual presentation at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough. Weather was not the best, but the Highlanders are not to be put off by the damp. It is always an honor to provide pipes and drums to the very appreciative veterans and wet weather is not unknown to the denizens of the Scottish Highlands!

The parade season this year will be more difficult than usual, as a number of our stalwarts will be leaving in August on a pilgrimage to the auld sod. We will lose both pipers and drummers for a bit, but wish them all the best when they go to Scotland on a tour. It’s a struggle, but we will persevere so long as they don’t do anything that will have the rest of us banned from the homeland forever!

The Highlanders were given the honor of escorting Piper David Smart at Saco Lodge when he received his 50 year pin. Noble David became a Mason 50 years ago, and is still on the active roster of the Kora Highlanders. He is the installed Musician of the Saco Lodge and has honorably represented Kora Shrine and the Kora Highlanders for many years. We are proud to have this Shrine Mason among our numbers.

We have taken on a number of apprentice pipers, and you may have seen two of them in parades by now. Apprentice Pipers C. Arthur Allen and Jim Delage have been appearing with us regularly and filling the piper ranks. The commitment of these men is shown by their meeting regularly for lessons and then doing what all pipers and drummers must do…PRACTICE faithfully!

We have also taken on several new apprentice pipers, Ben Weisner, Mike Coffey and Jordan Berube, who will become full members, along with a guest apprentice piper, Sylvia Butt, who is a Mason’s widow. We now have a new guest drummer, Cassidy Lovejoy, who has taken to the tenor drum like a fish to water! After several months of instruction, Cassidy is parading and flourishing, or twirling, her drumsticks and along with Renee Letendre, adding to the visual impact of a proud band of Pipes and Drums! If you are thinking twirling looks easy, try patting your head, rubbing your stomach for a mile or so, while keeping time on the drum and staying in step. These people

give multi-tasking a new meaning! The Drum Section of Kora Highlanders is making a name for itself among pipe bands in Southern Maine, with two snare drummers, a bass drummer and three tenor drummers, a robust drum section indeed!

The Highlanders are a dedicated group of Shrine Masons who are able to follow the covenant of “having fun and helping kids”. Each summer, we represent not only Kora Shrine but every Shriner in North America, in many parades, while meeting every week to provide instruction to new musicians and to practice for the upcoming parades. While what we do is work, it is also fun. When you see us socializing in the Highlander room, please don’t hesitate to stop in and visit. If we seem to be rough around the edges, what you are seeing is brothers, in the family sense and setting, being brothers When it comes time to represent our Shrine, our Potentate and Masonry, we are all about business.

If you find yourself drawn to the skirl of the pipes or the beat of the drums, come and visit on any Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. at Kora Shrine Temple, where we will offer you free instruction and fellowship.

legion of honorby Bob Maxfield, Scribe

The Legion of Honor started the parade season off with a bang. We participated in a Memorial Day parade on May 27 in Lewiston. We also marched on May 29th in a Memorial Day parade in Gardiner. Both parades were well attended and the Legion of Honor looked sharp as always. There were seven Legionnaires in attendance at both parades.

June 8-June 10 was the Summer Ceremonial in Skowhegan. The parade went off without a hitch and a good time was had by all. There were 15 Nobles who became Shriners and the Second Sections put them through their paces. It was a lot of good fun and the new Nobles took it all in stride. It was a great weekend and whoever was involved in putting the weekend together should be proud.

motor corpsby Kevin T. Cole, Scribe

Greetings, fellow nobles. The Motor Corps is having a great parade season!

For some reason, we seem all to attract young beauty queens—or is it the other way around? Here we are at the July 4 parade in Augusta with Briley Bell, Miss Maine’s Outstanding

Teen 2017, and Ella Bement, Maine’s Pine Tree Princess. On that day, we had eleven cars in the Turner parade and twelve in Augusta—not bad! Our thanks go out to Noble Tom Budek for hosting our unit meeting and barbecue at his home between the two parades. His family’s hospitality was awesome.

If you’ve got a convertible, an antique or a specialty vehicle (or are trying to acquire one), why not consider joining the Motor Corps? You’d have great fun and get to hang around with some great auto buffs. Just ask one of us how to join.

Remember, Nobles, the Motor Corps is here to help all of you. If you need a ride to a parade, from a parade or during a parade, just let one of us know.

    See you on the highway!

    renegadesby Tim Beals, Scribe

The Renegades are having a great summer season! Our weekends are busy, but rewarding as we entertain crowds in some of our old favorite parades and some new found ones too.

We’re glad to welcome three new active members; Mitch Pruett, Dr. Paul Poulin, & Michael Cataldi. We love to see the family grow!

The parade season is winding down, but we have some of our favorite parades still to come. Hope to see you all in Rangeley, and be sure to visit our hospitality room at the temple.

second section by Jim Hennemann, Scribe

Summer is finally here and things will be getting busy in August. We have the Northeast in Ottawa Aug 17-20. The Second Section Summer Outing will be following the Kora Ride-In at Twichells on Aug 26th. The Outing is at Hebron Pines again this year and you should have received an Email on it. If not speak up and get the details.

The Summer Ceremonial at the Skowhegan Fair Grounds went off without a hitch. Thank you to all who participated, and a big shout out to the guys on audio system. Matt “Can you hear me now” Walsh, Jesse “How come it does not go to 11” Boulay, and Ed “What?” Haley did a great job in the booth. One thing to work on for next year, we need to keep Bolduc away from that darn hose…..my tighty whiteys were baggy brownies after the fire hose began hitting the dirt and mud next to me.

We have a few heath issues in our unit and its family members. Keep them in your thoughts and reach out if can. For those needing a hand, we are here for you. If you need help hosing something down Bolduc is the man to see.

Do not forget about the Auction on Oct 21st. Spread the word and seek out donations. This event is our only fund raiser and the new Room sucked most of our bank account out. Small, large, and weird donations make this fun. The earlier we know about them the better we can advertise them. First on the block is a doll collection of over 50 pieces…..none of which are inflatable.

See you soon, stay safe, and watch out for each other. I will try to do better next time.

Kora Kampers had their usual fun Spring meeting at Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough on May 19, 20, and 21. Early birds came early on May 18 we had meet and greet and campfire that evening. Friday, May 19th was a day on your own for visiting the sites in the area or just relaxing with friends and catching up on Winter events.

Saturday, May 20th we had our Chinese Auction, Meeting and took a tour around Old Orchard Beach by trolley provided by Tom Bayley. Upon return some of us enjoyed the Don Campbell Band at the Seaside Square. At 4:00 we had Happy Hour, Pot Luck Supper and then our Campfire.

Next meeting will be September 8, 9 and 10. We will have our usual events plus our Barbecue and game day. See you then.

Hello to everyone. Our snow birds are all home and we just love having them back.

We now hold 9 meetings at Rolandeaus Rest., off exit 75, Washington Street, Auburn. It seems to be easier for everyone to get to and to get into as there aren’t any steps to bother with. Roland nNadeau, who owns Rolandeaus, treats us like the queens that we all are!!!!!!!!!! There again, the food is delicious and costs about $8.00- $15.00. Our turn out for meetings has been wonderful because of the location and ease of getting there. The only meetings that we will not be having there is the July meeting as Roland and Nick take two weeks off and so then we will be going to Lisa’s Rest. in Augusta for that meeting. Lisa, the owner has had a couple of children who

The annual camping weekend of the Northeast Camel Caravan was held at Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough, Maine, on June 2-4 with 9 camping units. We had campers from Aleppo, Bektash & Kora Shrine Centers. Any Shriner in good standing from the Northeast is welcome to join us.

A rain shower on Friday night prevented us from having our campfire. Although it was cool, we were able to have all our activities on Saturday starting with a group breakfast. Later in the day we gathered for happy hour, a Chinese auction, business meeting and pot luck dinner. Evening brought a time to relax and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people around the campfire.

It was also voted to continue our past practice of making a contribution to the Transportation Funds of the three Shrine Centers represented by our membership.

We welcomed new members Stan & Peg Herriott from Aleppo, Arnold (AJ) Ridley, Jr. from Kora and Brian & Robin Robbins from Kora.

Our Sept., and Oct. meetings will be at Rolandeaus, Nov. meeting will be at the temple for the Feztival of Trees and December we will have our Christmas Party.

Remember that our October meeting will be our election of officiers as the temple has asked us to do this with them. We are not a unit but are under the umbrella of the Kora Shrine Temple. You can bring a new widow to that or any meeting but especially to the October meeting. If anyone knows of a Kora widow, please let her know about us and invite her to our meetings. If she becomes a member, our dues are only $10.00 for a year. Our meetings are held the second Thursday of each month except for the Christmas party which is held the first Thursday in December because of the weather. This years Christmas party will be at the home of Eileen Fales. All meetings start at 11:30am. Please come and join us and have some food and good friendships to be made.

We are here if you need us but we always hope that you don’t! Life can be lonely as one but together, we can do anything and learn to smile again. You can call Eileen Fales at 782-3586 for more info.

Just another quick note, our member, Mary Welner of Cundys Harbor and her daughter are featured in the Maine Seniors Summer edition as well as our local news paper. Her daughter, Sue and husband are called the “hawkes” of Cundys Harbor. It’s a great write up about all of them and their store and life there. I hope that you will be able to find the write up as it is worth it and of course, we do love Mary Welner!

    Potentate's trip to South Dakota

have been at the Shriners Hospital with great results. This is how we want to thank her and her family. She has great food at a great price!

Our August meeting will be at the home of our president, Eileen Fales. It is the annual meeting for the lobster dinner. This meeting is fun as we can all enjoy the lobster dinner and then we just sit and enjoy our day by the pool.

Several of us go to the shows at Brunswick Theatre each year. If any one wants to join us for the rest of this year or next year, when you call the playhouse, please ask for “Susy” as she helps and we are all friends with her now.

Kathy Swett comes home from Florida in May and when she gets here, she gets us tickets for Lakewood Theatre. That is about $20.00 for the show. We all eat at the Rest. at Lakewood and the food is again wonderful and prices are great as well. Thank you Kathy for being our hostess for that outing.

Just a quick note about our going to the shows---afterwards we always find a place that serves ice cream!!!!! Yum!!!

We served at the Lobster Bowl luncheon at Kora Temple in April and got to meet the football players and cheerleaders as well as their parents and coaches. The students are happy to have been selected and their families are very proud of their children. The coaches are ready to start working and they are happy as well to be meeting the other schools students.

Our potentate and wife, John Gailey and Phyllis, had a trip to South Dakota in May and about 8 of us widows went along. A great trip with great shriners and friends. Thanks John and Phyllis for doing this trip for us. We all enjoyed it!

The Kora Brewers - Taproom No. 11 has been very busy since our creation this past April. First, we want to thank everyone who supported our raffle at this year’s Summer Ceremonial. We raise over $300 and signed up six new members, so we now have over 50 regular members. On May 20th, we travelled to Dirigo Brewery in Biddeford and had a wonderful tour and get fellowship with about a dozen members. On Friday, June 9th our club hosted a “Pub Craw” tour of Oakpond & Bigalow Breweries which was open to all Nobles and their Ladies. With the monies raised

through our Ceremonial Raffle, the Club was able to give back to Kora and sponsored a Hole at this year’s 12th Annual Lobster Bowl Golf Classic, as well as, fielded a Kora Brewers Team. On July 23rd, our club hosted a tour of SoME Brewing in York and this event was open to club members, Ladies, and families. Our August’s and September’s events have not yet been determined. The purpose of Kora Brewers is to support Kora Shriners and promote the good of Shrinedom and Brotherhood in general. Kora Brewers exists as a means for members to explore their hobby of home brewing through the promotion and education of brewing beer / wine making / distilling / and other related activities and to increase the awareness of the quality and variety of homemade beverages (either non-alcoholic or alcoholic). Our membership is made up of those who home brewer and also those who just like to enjoy fine beverages, but more importantly we like to have fun and fellowship while supporting Kora and our Hospitals.

    The club hosts monthly
