FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK………by John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder

Greetings Nobles:We end a year of 2019 on a note of

reflection – and wish peace and healing for the family of Illustrious Sir Rick Hersom and Lady Liz. We are grateful for the gift of their

talent and commitment to Kora Shriners during 2019. As we enter 2020, we look forward to supporting Illustrious

Sir Sonny Jutras and Lady Diane as they begin their journey, continuing to support Kora Shriners and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Please be sure to watch for events, dates, and registrations both here in the SANDS and on line through the Kora Konnections and Kora Ladies Konnections. Lots of information is available – especially DUE DATES for reservations. We all need to be respectful of due dates to assure meal counts can be secured in a timely manner.

As reported in this issue, our Membership numbers for 2019 were very encouraging. We can all do more by building on Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s message of “JUST ONE”. As we prepare for the March 27th Spring Ceremonial, plans are being made to conduct initiation of new members – be sure your candidate applications are to the Recorder, with the membership fees of $175 in plenty of time for balloting on March 25th at the stated meeting.

One last message for all Unit and Club Leaders – and all Nobles in general – the WebFez membership system is an effective tool for Units and Clubs to use – as well as each Noble being able to keep your own personal information up to date. Unit and Club leaders should have a designated Noble to act as an administrator for your group to keep membership rolls current and accurate. Contact the Recorder for any additional information you need.

Stay safe, and stay healthy in the New Year!Fraternally,John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder

FROM THE DESK OF THE POTENTATE

by Illustrious Potentate Gerard “Sonny” Jutras

Thank you for having elected me as the Potentate of Kora Shriners for 2020. Lady Diane and I look forward to an awesome year. We are truly blessed to have all the support we have.

Its been a sad couple of months at Kora, with the passing of Illustrious Sir Rick Hersom. We know he’s in a better place, but his many family members and friends are deeply saddened. Please keep Lady Liz and her family in your thoughts and prayers. It makes us all realize how much we take people for granted sometimes and how fragile life is.

Rick was adamant about having fun and helping children. I intend to hang on to the same values moving forward.

For many years we at Kora have been working hard to maintain our membership roll. I’m happy to report that because of the hard work of the Membership Committee, its leaders, and with your help, we had the least amount of loss in many years during 2019. With your help, we can keep this positive trend going. As in the Imperials Potentate’s directive of “Just One,” let’s all do our part in bringing in just one new Noble during 2020.

We are looking forward to a busy schedule with lots of fun events. One of them being a semi-formal dinner and dance with live music on February 15th. The committee is working hard to make this a successful event. Please help by purchasing your tickets and attending this event. You will find more information in this issue of the Sands or the Kora Konnections.

In April, it will be Circus time. My understanding is that ticket sales will be different this year. You will receive a bill from the Circus Committee for your tickets. If you need tickets, they will mail them to you at your request. Please help the circus by paying the invoice you receive, whether you need tickets or not. This fundraiser is to support our fraternity. Maintaining our building and operations costs a huge amount of money.

Thank you to all the nobles, clubs, and units that made donations at the annual meeting. Those donations will make a positive difference wherever they were designated. You should all be proud of what we accomplish at Kora.

Please help support Lady Diane’s fundraiser by purchasing a Fezkerchief or charm. The net proceeds will be for the Kora Foundation.

Congratulations, and thank you to all the Unit and Club officers that have stepped up to keep Kora moving in a positive direction. We all appreciate it!

Yours in Faith,Illustrious Sonny Jutras

FROM THE TREASURERBy Barry Gates P. P., Treasurer

SHRINE CLUBSSome members may not be aware of the presence of

local shrine clubs in Koraland. Shrine clubs for years have been a way to further extend the fellowship of our fraternity. Clubs are localized to certain communities, making it more convenient for our nobles and their ladies to gather and socialize on a more frequent basis. Membership is open to any noble; you are welcome to join any shrine club you wish regardless of your home location. Shrine clubs generally meet in the Fall, Winter, and Spring, moving functions outside for the summer months. Membership is extended to brand new nobles for no dues assessment during their first calendar year as a shriner. Many newer members do not get the opportunity to experience all that the fraternity has to offer, these club meetings are a great way to meet fellow nobles and ladies.

This article should stand as an open invitation to all nobles not currently a member of a shrine club to seek out their local group, contact the person listed in this article and join in the camaraderie. See page 2 for a list of active clubs and contacts.

Here is the financial results for the 2019 year, and the approved budget for 2020. Both were presented at Kora’s Annual Meeting on January 11, 2020.

The 2019 year was a good financial year ending with a surplus $47,086. This was primarily a result of another successful year with the Feztival of Trees, dues payments and most expense accounts staying within budget. The 2020 year shows a balanced budget.

KORA SHRINE CENTER FOUNDATIONA 501 C 3 Corporation by Barry Gates, P.P., President

MissionThe mission of the Kora Shrine Center Foundation is to raise

funds to preserve, protect, and maintain the historic Kora Shrine Center and its significant artwork.

The Foundation will raise capital to help underwrite the real estate related costs associated with maintaining and preserving the Kora Shrine Center.  All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible under IRS Code 170.  Donors will be entitled to declare their contribution as a charitable gift.  Please consult your tax advisor.

The Foundation welcomes gifts of cash, invested securities such as stocks and bonds, real estate, collectables, and life insurance proceeds.  Multi-year pledge-giving is also an option for donors. Please consider the Foundation in your estate planning. Example: pledge-give $1,000/year for the next 5 years, payable in lump-sum or installments. Representatives of the Foundation are anxious to meet with Nobles, and/or their families, to discuss these and other giving-options. Contact Rick Olfene or Barry Gates for more information.

MEMBERSHIP RAMBLINGSBy Ryan Sherman, Asst. Membership Chair

Welcome Kora land to the New Year and all the possibilities that 2020 can bring! The membership committee was hard at work in 2019 and the numbers definitely show it. As is said, there are only two things for certain; we can’t do anything about taxes, and the Black Camel did take its toll. Excluding what we can’t change, Kora had the least amount of loss due to demits, suspensions, and resignations that we have had in 8 years. That is huge! The Membership Committee is looking to keep the positive numbers rolling and we need the help of each and every one of you to do it.

That being said, Imperial believes that the Membership committee of every Temple should be comprised of just 1% of your total membership. For Kora, that would mean a total of 17 Nobles and their ladies combined. If you and your lady have been looking to get more involved, we have the opportunity for you. If you are looking to plan an event, have an idea to help increase membership in the Temple, or just want the opportunity to help a committee that supports our ultimate mission of having fun to help kids, then all you have to do is just one thing…show up. Next membership committee meeting will be February 3, 2020. Let us know your ideas, how you would like to help and keep Kora moving in the right direction.

Maybe you would like to help in some of our current initiatives? Membership is working on some exciting things coming up so make sure to mark your calendars. May 2-3 is the big trip that many of you have been waiting for. This year, Kora Membership will be providing buses to visit our Springfield Hospital! We packed 2 buses last year to visit our Boston Hospital and we're

Potentate 2015 and 2019 August 19, 1952 – November 18, 2019

In Memory ofIllustrious Sir Richard E. Hersom

hoping to make this one even bigger! This will be an overnight trip and include a stop at Old Sturbridge Village. To make this deal a little sweeter, for you new Nobles, Membership will be helping to supplement the cost of transportation. What’s that mean? That means that new Nobles and your ladies or 1 guest, travel for free! (Still responsible for overnight accommodations and food.) Don’t miss your chance to really see what our efforts are supporting; our hospitals! More info on page 20 of the Sands.

If travel isn’t so much your thing, but food is, then this one may be right up your alley. The Kora Cash Calendar and Membership Committee are teaming up to help bring you to Cabbage Island for a Clam Bake on Friday, June 26th 2020. Leaving from Boothbay Harbor at 4p.m., this trip will take you on a 1.5 hour sightseeing trip of Boothbay Harbor, followed by a twin lobster (or chicken if you prefer) dinner on Cabbage Island with all fixings. This will be one not to miss! Details about this trip are on page 22 of the Sands. Also, find info about both trips in the Kora Konnection and Ladies Konnection.

As always, if you know of a Master Mason who would like to join our ranks, get them a petition, or drop us a line at [email protected]. Remember, any Noble who is the first line signer for two or more new Nobles will get next year’s dues paid. It’s easy to send in a referral by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help get things moving and make these men Masons and Nobles.

NOBLES ALL – as we begin a new year of Kora Activities, you are reminded that to participate in events – ceremonials,

parades, and all other Kora sponsored functions, your 2020 dues must be paid and you must have an updated 2020 sticker on your dues card. Payment can be made by calling the

Kora Office (207.782.6831) by credit card, mail a check, pay in person at the office, or on-line on the

Kora web page (korashriners.org) or on WebFez by signing in to that system. Thank you for

your attention!

Using Technology to Move ForwardJohn R. Knox, PP, Recorder

In this issue of the SANDS (page 11), I have AGAIN included step-by-step instructions on using the WebFez system – how to sign up and how to log in. I realize there are still many Nobles who have not “connected” in this new electronic world – but I would urge you all to consider doing so, if only for your Shrine membership information and data. If you are not “computer savvy” ask a grandchild to help you – they’ll be glad to spend the time with you.

With postage rates rising each year (currently at 50 cents for a standard letter) hard copy mailing on a regular basis becomes expensive. Shriners International is asking Temples to increase their member access to email and other electronic media for updating of information, which will help decrease communications costs to temples.

The WebFez system allows Nobles to access your personal record, make changes to your address, telephone, and email information. It also lets your Unit or Club secretaries keep more accurate membership rosters. You can refer names for potential members that will help our Membership Committee provide follow-up to prospects for membership.

At some time in the near future we are in hopes to add a module to allow members to pay your dues directly on line through the system. It also provides quick links to the Shriners Village web page which has resources available to everyone on Membership, the latest news on our Shriners Hospitals system and patient ambassadors as well as events happening at other Temples.

Dues notices for 2021 will begin appearing in August – I ask you all to please take a few minutes to update any information on the dues notice when you pay your dues – particularly your address and contact information, your Lady’s name and information and your Blue Lodge data. Also consider signing up and logging in to WebFez where you can update this information directly on line.

I will be scheduling some information and training sessions for the WebFez system, beginning with Unit Directors and Secretaries, then the Nobility in general. In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions you may have.

We can all have a positive impact on our communication efforts – thanks for doing your part.

SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN BOSTON

New burn injury research: Looking beyond the short term

Due to recent extraordinary medi-cal and technological advancements in burn treatment, the rate of survival among children with burns has in-creased dramatically since Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston opened in the 1960s. In the past, researchers put great emphasis on the acute treatment of the injury, as patients with significant burns were unable to recover without immedi-ate life-saving interventions like skin grafts and critical care support.

Burn injuries are traumatic for the child and their family in both the short and long term; they can bend the trajectory of a patient’s life tremendously and influence what the patient can or cannot achieve in the future. We can observe now, as these children grow up and develop into adults, the unique physical, psychological and social challenges that eventually arise due to their injuries.

As the only exclusively pediatric, verified burn center in New England, the Boston Shriners Hospital has been a trailblazer in defining and measuring what happens to patients after their burns are initially treated. Our research team has been studying these outcomes over the last 25 years. Colleen M Ryan, M.D., FACS, serves as the clinical director at the Boston-Harvard Burn Injury Model System, with the Boston Shriners Hospital being a main participating site. “A burn injury evolves from an acute illness to a chronic condition, and it’s important to recognize that while these children do well in terms of survival, they face persistent challenges in quality of life that we can help them with, from infancy through adulthood,” Ryan said.

Dr. Ryan is currently working on several studies where she and her team research these long-term outcomes, with the hope that the rehabilitation and recovery process for child burn survivors can be made easier for patients and their families.

The Preschool LIBRE and School-Aged LIBRE (Life Impact Burn Recovery Evaluation) studies focus on the impact of burn injuries on physical and emotional health, as well as psychological and social development of the child. The studies aim to evaluate different long-term burn outcomes by measuring recovery post-injury through a questionnaire that parents can fill out online. Parent participation in these studies helps us help others.

“The thought is that if we can measure it, we can improve it,” Dr. Ryan said. With the ability to track and monitor recovery, clinicians can determine how, when and which therapies would be most beneficial to each child.

Colleen M Ryan, M.D., FACS

Briah's storyThe children who come to

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston often develop strong relationships with staff due to the long-term care they receive as a result of their burn injuries. This fosters comfort and trust, and contributes to positive outcomes. Patients like Briah are a big part of what makes the Boston Shriners Hospital such a special place.

In 2011, Briah was just a year old when a kerosene lamp tipped over, spilling onto

her bed in her home in the Bahamas. Suffering severe burns, Briah was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau. There, staff recognized that Briah needed the expertise of doctors who specialized in pediatric burn care. Fortunately, the hospital had a connection with the Boston Shriners Hospital.

Once Briah arrived in Boston, doctors immediately started treatment. She sustained third degree burns on her left arm, both legs, face and scalp, covering 65% of her body. Over the course of seven months, Briah went through nine surgeries. One involved a partial foot amputation and others focused on her extensive burn injuries. At the end of her stay, Briah received a prosthesis, which helped increase her mobility and freedom when she returned home.

Briah returned to the hospital in 2015 to begin her plastic and reconstructive care with Daniel Driscoll, M.D. She also met Melissa Brown, one of the hospital’s clinical social workers. Melissa has gotten to know Briah well throughout the years and said that this year’s visit from Briah and her mom, Violet, started with the news that Briah desperately needed a new prosthetic. Violet explained that Briah spends her days running around outside without shoes, so the bottom of the prosthetic was completely worn down. Melissa thought this was reassuring, because it showed that Briah is living a full life, exploring nature and playing outside.

Another reason for Briah’s return to Boston was to continue treatment related to her burn injury. Her first procedure was a skin graft on the back of her right and left leg, followed by a suture and stent removal to both legs. She also received a Z-plasty to her right hand, and skin grafting to the left wrist and small finger.

In addition to the surgical interventions, Briah and her mother worked with the nurses and Dr. Driscoll in the clinic to learn dressing care post-surgery. Violet does a fantastic job caring for her daughter post–op, changing Briah’s bandages and making sure her daughter is comfortable.

After her procedures, Briah was non-weight bearing for about three weeks. She began working with the rehabilitation staff after she was cleared to return to weight bearing. She received new pressure garments as well as a new prosthetic. This visit was another step toward great outcomes for Briah.

Briah may seem a little shy during her stay in the hospital, but it is clear when she is at home that she is the star of the show. Briah can often be found dancing and laughing while playing at home. Briah looks up to her mom for reassurance and comfort while

she visits the hospital. Violet is her daughter’s biggest advocate and expressed her gratitude to the hospital, sharing, “Shriners is making a big difference in Briah’s life after the burn, and being here always keeps her smiling.”

Briah and Violet have always been such strong supporters of our hospital. Briah has appeared in many of our brochures and marketing materials since she was just a baby. On behalf of the hospital, we would like to thank Briah and her mother, Violet, for sharing their story so others can learn about the amazing care here.

SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS

Alex Hits the Runway

The Springfield Shriners Hospital was given the opportunity to have Alex, one of our teen patients with cerebral palsy, walk in the Unify Against Bullying Fashion Show in October! We were thrilled to be a part of this special event, and Alex could not have been more excited.

Unify Against Bullying is a local nonprofit with a mission to end bullying through the celebration of true diversity. This annual all-inclusive fashion show is a huge event that celebrates all sizes,

shapes, styles, ethnicities, sexual orientations and physical abilities. Students from over 25 different schools come together to make this incredible show possible. Students feel empowered on the runway, and create a series of performances showing the effects of bullying.

“This year, Unify was excited to partner with Shriners Hospital. They were eager to introduce us to one of their patients. Alex joined us as a runway model and was a delight from the very beginning when we met him for the first rehearsal! He had a big smile on, came in and introduced himself to everyone. Alex totally enjoyed meeting all of the other students and had a great time rehearsing for the performance. For his look, Alex requested a “fierce” modern red and black blazer with motorcycle jeans and a fedora. He totally rocked the runway!” said Christine Maiwald, the executive director of Unify Against Bullying.

This year’s fashion show had 500 guests in attendance at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and was live-streamed  on social media for all to see.

When asked about his experience, all Alex could do was smile from ear-to-ear. “This experience made me feel free in a way I can’t describe. I really came into myself and had so much fun.”

Blake gets his groove on in physical therapy

Since Blake was a toddler, his mother, Laura, recognized his passion for music. Now playing the drums, guitar, keyboard and harmonica, 4-year-old Blake has been able to build stamina and an incredible confidence – especially in front of crowds!

Blake was born with cerebral palsy, and he comes to the Springfield Shriners Hospital for physical therapy with Megan. She likes to incorporate music and dancing into his sessions because dancing requires a higher level of skill than walking due to the weight shifts and motor planning involved. Blake has been able to build endurance while having fun! According to his mother, Laura, “Therapy is play for Blake. Every part is enjoyable.”

During his most recent therapy session, Blake dressed up like his idol, Bruno Mars, and made a music video to Uptown Funk!

SHRINERS HOSPITAL HAPPENINGSShriners Hospitals for Children establishes new genomics institute

to advance precision medicine in partnership with Genome MedicalShriners Hospitals and leading telegenomics provider team up

to return actionable genetic findings for pediatric patients

Shriners Hospitals for Children is teaming up with Genome Medical to ensure that pediatric patients and families receiving next generation DNA sequencing through the new Genomics Institute at Shriners Hospitals will have access to the highest standard of genetic services through Genome Medical's nationwide network of clinical genetic specialists. Together, Shriners Hospitals for Children and Genome Medical will be taking pediatric genetic research to a personalized, patient-centric level that will lead to more individualized treatment options and improved outcomes.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children health care system will offer genetic sequencing to patients at its 22 hospitals and outpatient locations in North America and from its international network of outreach clinics. For some patients, the sequencing will reveal genetic variations in the most medically actionable genes. These patients and their caregivers will be connected to Genome Medical to receive support and clinical guidance from its team of genetic counselors and medical geneticists, who specialize in pediatric conditions. This may include virtual genetic counseling, arranging confirmatory genetic testing for the patient, referrals to appropriate medical specialists for follow-on care and coordinating genetic testing of family members when recommended.

"Through sophisticated, next generation sequencing of DNA samples from our patient population, Shriners Hospitals hopes to gain the understanding needed to create more targeted, efficient and personalized treatments and therapies," said Marc Lalande, Ph.D., vice president of research programs for Shriners Hospitals for Children. "We are proud to be at the forefront of this next major step toward bringing new hope and healing to children and families the world over."

This genetics-based approach to medical care – precision medicine – is more than a hope, or a dream. It is becoming a reality, and one day will even be the standard. With the establishment of its Genomics Institute in Tampa, Florida, Shriners Hospitals for Children has taken a major step toward this goal of understanding the specific – and individual – genetic causes of various conditions and disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate, clubfoot, scoliosis and osteogenesis imperfecta.

"Genome Medical is excited to be part of this strategic partnership with Shriners Hospitals for Children to advance pediatric genomics research and improve the quality of care through genome-informed diagnosis and treatment," said Lisa Alderson, co-founder and CEO of Genome Medical. "Across the country, families often have to wait months or even a year to see a pediatric genetic specialist, and they may have to travel far distances. We are changing that by joining together with Shriners Hospitals to offer easy access to leading clinical genetics specialists via virtual care, typically with next-day appointments, to ensure every child has access to appropriate genetic care to guide personalized treatment plans."

Finding answers and improving careShriners Hospitals for Children performs and supports clinical

and bench research in its network of hospitals and laboratories to understand the complex conditions it treats, to evaluate the efficacy of its clinical practices, and to enable the discovery of new and improved treatments for children all over the world.

With the introduction of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Genomics Institute, the organization is enhancing its capabilities and commitment to personalize pediatric care. It hopes to help patients through the discovery of new genetic causes for the diseases and conditions with which they are coping to create more targeted, efficient and personalized (tailored) therapies.

Genome Medical is dedicated to accelerating the integration of genomic-based medicine into health care for patients all across the United States. For both individuals and organizations like Shriners Hospitals for Children, Genome Medical's clinical team navigates the rapidly expanding field of genetics and utilizes test results to understand the risk for disease, accelerate disease diagnosis, make informed treatment decisions and lower the cost of care.

About Genome MedicalGenome Medical is a national telegenomics technology and

services company bringing genomic medicine to everyday care. Through our nationwide network of genetic specialists and efficient Genome Care DeliveryTM technology platform, we provide expert virtual genetic care for individuals and their families to improve health and well-being. We also help healthcare providers and their patients navigate the rapidly expanding field of genetics and utilize test results to understand the risk for disease, accelerate disease diagnosis, make informed treatment decisions and lower the cost of care. The discussion focussed on a donation of an ATV to the Feztival of Trees. The offer was made as a direct donation to the FOT be raffled off. We were unable to Raffle it off at the 2019 Feztival of Trees.

The Feztival Executive Committee has discussed the matter and made the following recommendations.

Kora Shrine Temple Association accepted the donation of the 2019 BOBCAT UTV and ownership was done by the 31st of December. This group of Nobles also known as the Trustees is also responsible for the maintance and major projects the building.

It is requested and has been approved by the Divan that a committee of Nobles, with fundraising experience, be established. Their charge will be to come up with a plan that raises the most money possible and disposes of the UTV in a timely manner. This fundraiser group will also work hard to achieve as much recognition as possible for Jordan Equipment who made this donation a $14,000 UTV.

Committee structure:2-Feztival Members-2 Nobles at Large-1 Divan-2 Trustees.

Communication:It will be the responsibity of each committee member to update the

UNITS COLONEL CORNERby Bob Doyle , Kora Units Colonel

As another year has ended and begun at Kora Temple, there is an excitement in the air. I would like to start by saying “Congratulations” to Illustrious Sir Sonny Jutrus as the elected Potentate for 2020 with Lady

Diane and the entire Elected and Appointed Divan and their Ladies. I would also like to say “Welcome” to Jeff Stowell who has agreed to the position of Units Lt. Colonel along with his Lady Sandy.

As you can see by my name under the header, I have been appointed to take over the duties of the Units Colonel. Myself and my Lady Amy are eager for this, as we get to work closely with every Unit in Kora. On behalf of Kora Temple, we can not say “Thank You” enough to Emeritus Units Colonel Bernie McAllister for all of the time and energy you put into this position. We, as Nobles, always had the necessary information to ensure we were doing things correctly and always prepared to make “smart choices”. I know we will continue to see you, Anne, and Becca at the many events you support at Kora Temple. We will always lend an ear and have an open communication channel for you because of the respect you have rightfully earned.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the new Emeritus Unit Directors. They have given so much of their time and energy for the benefit of their Units and have decided to step aside, allowing one of their fellow Nobles to take over the leadership role. I sincerely hope that each of you will continue to support Kora Shrine and your unit. To the new Directors, I want to thank you for agreeing to become part of the leadership team of Kora. It is in this way that we can keep Kora Temple energized, exciting, and fun for all Nobles.

Emeritus Directors: Al Smith - Aides, Dan Jordan - Cycle Corps, Jay Poirier - Klowns, Tony Perkins - Legion of Honor, Dana Brown - Log Rollers.

As we move through the late Winter and early Spring, your Kora Divan will be traveling around to introduce themselves to many of the Units. As the Divan members have changed positions, so have their Unit Liaison assignments. Please update the Kora Calendar with your Unit meeting schedule so that the Divan members can make it to a meeting. This is also the time of year to close out all of your Unit paperwork for 2019. Unit Officers, Financial statements, and Unit membership information should all be turned into the Kora office soon, if not already.

Kora Shrine Circus: We all know the importance of Unit support of the Kora Shrine Circus in April. Please sell your tickets and help at the Circus as a Unit. Perhaps select some shows and show up in numbers with your ladies and offer to help wherever you are needed. Contact any Circus Committee member to ask how your Unit can help.

The next Stated Meeting is on March 24th. The Motor Corps Unit room will be open for those Units without a room at Kora Temple. The Cycle Corps and Drifters will be responsible for serving and cleanup of the dining hall.

Lt. Colonel Jeff Stowell and I look forward to the start of another fun year at Kora Temple. If there is anything that Jeff or I can do to assist you or your Unit please do not hesitate to let us know.

CRAZY COPSby William Brochu, Scribe

Hello all. Hope everyone enjoyed another crazy Maine winter. We had a few good snow storms along with those nasty ice storms thrown in for good measure. It is now time for Maine’s 5th season, referred to as mud season. This will give you a chance to clean off that winter grime and shine your ride. Since your wheels will be clean and showable, why not head to the Shrine on March 28th. We will presenting another comedy show for all. This is a BYOB event with snacks and munchies provided by the Crazy Cops. What better way to look forward to spring than good laughs among family and friends.

This year’s Kora circus kick-off party is March 20th. Everyone is invited to come to pick up posters and share in the excitement as the Circus season begins. Volunteers young and old are needed to make sure the shows run smoothly. Please consider supporting this wonderful event by donating some time and energy. Let us also recognize all those who work behind the scenes to assure the continued success…Thank you!

The Crazy Cops added parade carts in 2019. The unit members worked hard to fit the trailers with shelving to transport the carts. 2020 parade season will be here soon and numerous appearances by the unit are scheduled. The Crazy Cops are ready to put on a good show at each event. We hope to see our friends and family in attendance at the parades. Stay safe all.

BUCCANEERSby Brandan Roberts, Scribe

First and foremost, we hope you had a Merry Christmas and are off to an excellent New Year! If you did not make it to the Installation of Officers you missed a great time and a wonderful meal. We’d also like to thank Rick and Liz Hersom for a wonderful 2019 - Rick may be gone but he will never be forgotten. And finally, a big welcome to Illustrious Sir Sonny and Diane Jutras as they take their place as Potentate and first Lady of Kora Shrine. We look forward to what you have in store for us!

While the winter months have been low key for us, we’re gearing up, preparing, and eagerly awaiting the 2020 Kora Shrine Circus, when we can suit up as Buccaneers once again! If you would like to join our ranks to help sail our Pirate Ship, we are always looking for new members! We have extra costumes and would love to have some new bodies to put them in – the Circus is an excellent time to see if we are a good fit for you! Or, if you’d want to dip your toes into the pirating life, we’re also looking for drivers to tow our landlocked ship during the parades – we have the vehicle, you just need a driver’s license!

We’re a family-orientated unit that enjoys meeting and greeting the children attending the Circus as well as various parades across Maine dressed up as friendly pirates. If interested, contact any of the Buccaneers and we will be glad to send you information and an application! Stay warm this winter and we’ll see you in April!

BANDby Cal Yeaton, VP and Interim Secretary

The Kora Band was busy this past parade season. We performed at the Summer Ceremonial, Lovell Old Home Days, Casco Days and the Wilton Blueberry Festival which was a great parade and hope to do it again in 2020. Also a new parade for the band was the Great Falls Balloon Festival Parade and as usual the Fryburg Fair Parade. Coming up this year will be the Concert in the Park being held in the Kora Ceremonial Hall on May 9th from 1 to 4pm. We will also be joining a combined band and ANAH Band on their parade trailer for a special 200th State of Maine Celebration Parade in Lewiston this summer.

Kora Band rehearsals are held at 7 pm on the first and third Thursday of every month at Kora Temple. We are always looking for new members, so if you have ever played an instrument or would like to just “help out”, we welcome you to join the band unit or just “sit-in” at any of our rehearsals or meetings.

Don’t forget to stop by and visit us in the band room at the top of the stairs, our door is always open and the music is always on!

DRIFTERSby Dan Guilmette, Scribe

Friends are the pillars on your porch. Sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you, and sometimes it’s just enough to know that they are standing by. Rick was a friend to so many of us here at Kora and beyond. A pillar standing tall, there to lean on, you knew Rick was always there when you needed him.

We all miss you Rick. On Jan 11th, the Drifters assembled at Kora to present a years’

worth of work to the Temple and to the hospitals. The basis on which our unit was founded, was to have fun helping kids, promote our temple, and to help raise funds for the hospitals and Kora. I am very proud to be a part of this little group and to accomplish so much in such a short time, albeit with help from many like our sponsors and other units here at Kora.

This year our Christmas party was again held at Noble Ken and his Lady Jean’s house, who never disappoint as hosts and made all feel welcome. There was plenty of cheer and smiling faces which is always welcomed around the holidays.

Looking on to the spring, we have plenty to focus on. Like many of my unit brothers, I am itching to get back to work, practicing new maneuvers, refining the ones we have, and creating smiles for parade goers all over. We also have some renovations to look forward to, and are accepting bids for the wonderful floral pattern wallboard in the unit room that will soon be replaced. Do not hesitate, I’m sure this will go fast...

CYCLE CORPSby Bob Levesque, Scribe

So this is new for me, I have become the scribe for the Cycle Corps Unit. Sounds pretty easy, they all said! We will see.

The Cycle Corps has had a great year that followed several other very good years. Its always nice when all the boys (and wives) play nice together. The unit has become a thriving entity again, like days of old. The group communicates well and does lots of outside the Temple activities together, which just makes our bond stronger.

The unit has grown to nearly 30 full time members with 6 associate members as well. We have our fleet of 1972 Rupp Roadsters in the best shape I have seen them in 16 years of hanging around these guys. We have formed committees that take care of the trailer, the mini bikes and the golf cart….yes even the golf cart.

We participated in 10 parades this season and are looking for more. We have a food booth at the Balloon Festival that helps raise money to keep us a float. We had a big presence at the Feztival of Trees with our gang leading the set up and tear down of the hall.

By the time you read this we will have participated in our third year of toboggan racing at the National Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl. I will update everyone how it all went in the next sands…..see how I am building suspense!!

Well that’s enough for now. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the winter and is hoping for an early spring like we are. As always the Cycle Corps are looking for more fun loving guys to join the team. We only take applications from people who don’t take themselves too seriously, raising money for kids hospitals and having fun, that what we are all about.

Also a special thanks goes out to all the wives, girlfriends, families and friends that support our crazy somewhat dysfunctional unit, we wouldn’t be half as successful (or have as much fun) without your help, we may not say it enough, but believe me, we all think it every day. THANKS, THANKS, THANKS

Until next time, live like a Mason and be proud of all the good work we do.

We had our annual Christmas Party at the Levesque’s house in Turner in December and it was well attended and everyone had a blast. The picture shown here is that crazy crew at about the middle of the festivities. We had to take the picture early, as the saran wrap games tends gets a little out of control (Pam). There was way too much food and adult beverages as per usual, but what fun we had.

We are having a change in leadership this year, which we are all excited about (especially Danny). Dan Jordan has been our Director for the past 5 years and has done a whale of a job bringing our unit back from the brink of extinction. He has been a calming presence and a guy who bridges all our strong personalities (too many to mention). He has passed the torch to Lenny Perkins, a 29 year member of the unit, and he has 100% support from the members. We are looking forward to growing our unit and being a giant part of the Kora team.

Lenny giving the out going Director a plaque

from the unit and families, giving him all

the gratitude we could fit onto that little plaque.

FUNSTERS by Adam ‘Simba’ Tanguay, Director

So another year has started, and the Funsters are already planning for a fun filled year. We have already added a parade to our schedule as well as a group camping weekend, to increase our ties together and to bring back some of the fun the the original members used to have. But that is only the start. There are a few other thing that we would like to try. In the end, the goal is to increase participation and to get new members.

But before all of this we have the circus to participate in. I am interested to see what the circus committee has in storey for this year's show, and how well the Saturday morning shows will be attended.

Well I guess end this here. I hope to see you all out there on the shrine path.

GREETERSBy Craig Rubner, Scribe

A Happy New Year to all. With the start of the new year, new decade and most importantly our Great State's Bicentennial, it looks like the coming year may be filled with many interesting events.

The Greeters started off the year with our Annual meeting at the Chick A Dee. After all the activity and bustle of Feztival of Trees and the holidays it was nice to get together and have a chance to socialize with each other. Thank you to Tom Boyer for setting this up. Great job Tom! We have also had the pleasure of welcoming Nobles Doug Taft, Andrew Gilbert, Warren Galway, and Dennis Weightman to the Greeters, nice to have you aboard!

The Circus is our first big event of the year. It will be at the Lewiston Colisee 17th-20th April and at the Augusta Civic Center the 24th -26th. I hope as many Greeters as possible can help out at the shows we need your support to make our part of the Circus a success again this year.

The Summer Ceremonial will be at Bayley's again this year so keep your ears open and make your reservations early, the sites go fast!

With that I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous year and look forward to spending time with you all in the coming year.

HIGHLANDERS by Chet Matthews, Chief Highlander

La’ Math (good day) Noble Lads & Lassies,The Highlanders doff our bonnets in congratulations and

extend our best wishes for a successful year our new Potentate Illustrious Sir Sonny Jutras his Lady Diane and the 2020 Divan.

Our Highlander year has begun with our participation in the Necrology service on January 11th. Next up is our eleventh annual Robbie Burns Night to once again be held at the Martindale Country Club in Auburn on February First. As always it is to be a night of traditional Burns Night toasts, food and drink in abundance and some never to be seen elsewhere traditions and fun of our own, and of course Pipes and Drums aplenty. And as always the Highlander ladies have begun working months in advance to help make this event a success. No way could we do it without them.

After that its preparation time for our St. Patrick’s Day events which will kick off in February with the 30 Days to St. Pats day performance at Gritty McDuff’s in Auburn. To be followed by additional St. Pat’s Day performances at all Gritty’s locations as well as Pedro O’Hara’s in Lewiston and the Eagles Club in Westbrook. Times and locations will be communicated when finalized. These events are a lot of fun and all donations received are earmarked for our Hospitals. We are always happy to see our fellow Nobles at these performances, so come and join in the fun!

Then it’s on to another parade and summer event season which begins on Memorial Day with performances at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, followed by the parade in Old Orchard Beach.

The Kora Highlanders Pipe and Drum Corps is a vibrant and colorful traditional military style unit comprised of a dedicated group of Nobles augmented by a similarly dedicated group of guest musicians and steadfastly supported by our Highlander Ladies.

While we take great pride in supporting Kora and our Hospitals through our music we also take pride in doing it well and most importantly making sure that we have fun doing it. So, if you're curious about us or think the Highlanders may be the place for you,

At the January 11th installation of officers, the Highlanders stand ready to play for the Necrology

tribute to Nobles who passed away in 2019.

KARTSby William C. Chapman, Secretary

2019 was a great parade season for the Kora Karts unit. Though it seemed we were parading in the rain a number of times, no one rained on our parade.

KLOWNSby Rick Green, Scribe

After another busy year, the KORA KLOWNS recognize, like many other units, that participation is critical to our success. Knowing that this is the first time in many years that we have submitted a report to the Kora Sands, we wanted to take this opportunity to share a little history about our unit.

The mission of the KORA KLOWNS started as part of the Second Section in 1968/69 and became an official Unit in February, 1970. Our mission is to:

• Entertain children of all ages;• Promote the Kora Temple and Shrinedom in general;• Promote fun and entertainment; • Support the philanthropy of Shrinedom, and; • Assist in the conduct of Temple affairs, ceremonials, etc. as

requested by the Potentate. Since 1970, the KORA KLOWNS have been active in the Shrine

Circus, parades and other fundraising events. Being a member of the KORA KLOWNS is a very fun and rewarding experience. If you enjoy people and want to get involved with a unit that is handsome enough to have their picture taken with members of the New England Patriots Cheerleading squad, you should consider joining the KORA KLOWNS!

For more information please feel free speak to any one of our KLOWN members or email Mike “Dewgee” Robitaille at [email protected]

In 2020, we are again looking forward to a number of great parades beginning with the Summer Ceremonial. We plan on following that up with parades in Warren, Boothbay (always a large parade and well attended), Augusta on the 4th of July, the Moxie Parade in Lisbon, Richmond, Wilton Blueberry, Madison-Anson (another big, well attended event), and Clinton.

Along the way, we’ll be looking forward to the Potentate’s Reception at Rangeley (hopefully, there will be no rain this year) with its bar-be-que and wonderful camaraderie with our friends from the Western Mountains Shrine Club.

It is fun zipping around in the little go-karts about 3 inches (if that much) off the ground with the kids waving and adults applauding. We’re looking for a few members to round out our group. There is no age restriction! We’ve had Nobles in their 80s as well as in their 20s. It’s great fun and a joy to see enthusiastic fans cheering you on while doing your part to raise money for the kids.

Please contact our unit director, Chris Bartsch, at 861-2772, or our secretary, Bill Chapman, at 701-1877. In both cases, please leave a message if no one is available to answer your call.

Remember, we ride so they can walk!

plan to visit us at one of our practice sessions in the Highlander Room at the Shrine Center to share a wee dram and learn more about us. Contact Chief Highlander, Chet Matthews (207) 841-2474, [email protected] or any Highlander. No musical background? No worries, we will provide lessons.

Until next time, Slainte mhath (good health) and Sealbh math dhuit (good luck).

SECOND SECTION by Jim Hennemann, Scribe

It has been quite a ride this Holiday Season. I hope you had more Highs than Lows. I write this with unbridled enthusiasm for a great year at Kora. The Divan is looking strong, and under Illustrious Sonny's lead this year should be fun and productive. If the Installation of Officers was any indication of how things will go we are in very good shape. The mood was up and the participation and attendance were very strong.

The 2nd Section will be leaned upon heavily this year as usual. Lets take on the challenges head on and with a smile. Watch out for your friends and neighbors. Say a little prayer for our 2nd Section family as there are some people struggling with health and grief. Lend a hand and try to stay positive....it really does make a difference. For those in a bad spot, we are here for you.

Spring is coming.....Hang in there Baby!!. I can't wait to try out my new Speedo.

As I write this, our precious automobiles rest quietly under their covers.  Like the tulips, they’ll be coming out soon enough.  While you’re checking them for safety, doing annual maintenance and polishing them up, don’t forget to provide Secretary Russ Farwell with copies of your registration, your insurance card, and your driver’s license.  He’ll need it before our first parade in May.

Although some of our members are soaking up the sun in “deep southern Maine”, others are itching to start on renovation of our unit room at the temple, which was damaged by flooding.   Director Tom Budek asked me to let everyone know that, whether the renovations are under way or not, the Motor Corps will meet in that room one hour prior to any stated meeting at the temple.  Thank you, Tom, for staying on as Director for 2020.

Nobles, we still are ready to accept new members and new vehicles.  If you have an antique automobile, a convertible or a specialty vehicle and if you and your lady want to attend parades and other activities with a great bunch of guys and gals while helping the Shriners’ Hospitals and Kora Temple, then the Motor Corps just may be the unit for you.  Why not check us out?

See you on the highway!

Arnie Moore receiving his 50 year pin.

OXFORD COUNTY SHRINE CLUB FEZTIVAL

by OCSC Feztival of Trees Committee

We just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for making the First Oxford County Shrine Club Feztival of Trees such a great success. A big thank you goes out to all of our corporate sponsors, especially Sunday River for allowing us to host the event at the Jordan Hotel. I also want to thank everyone who worked the event. Without each of you we could not have been so successful. We couldn’t possibly begin to thank each and everyone who had a hand in this fundraiser so here is a big thank you for everyone involved. THANK YOU!!!!!

We had so much fun putting together the 2019 event that we are already planning the 2020 OCSC Feztival of Trees so save the weekend of Friday, December 11th through Sunday, December 13th, 2020. Hope to see you there.

MAINE SHRINE LOBSTER BOWL CLASSICby Joe Hersom, President MSLBC

The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic is deeply saddened by the passing of Illustrious Sir Richard Hersom.

Illustrious Sir Richard dedicated more than 20 years of his Shrine career to this annual event as it combined two of his greatest passions; Helping children through Shriners Hospitals and high school football in the State

of Maine. Rick served in a variety of rolls on the MSLBC Committee and was also a Past President of the MSLBC ‘Board of Governors”. Rick was the greatest promoter of the Game, always donning some piece of MSLBC attire, and never hesitated to share its history of helping children through Shriners Hospitals for Children. We will miss greatly his leadership, dedication, and his love of the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic.

We look forward to your support of the 31st Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic and throughout our 2020 Calendar of Events:
