FROM THE DESK OF THE POTENTATE

by Illustrious Potentate John H. Gailey

Illustrious Potentate John H. GaileyMEMBERSHIP RAMBLINGS

By Sonny Jutras, Membership Chairman

As I sit here typing out my last message to you as your Potentate, I cannot believe how quickly the year has

flown by. The many memories and the great support Lady Phyllis and I have received from you has meant a lot to us and most appreciated.

I think of the memories we made on the Potentate’s trip to South Dakota. How about at the Summer Ceremonial where we had units, campers, new Nobles, regular Nobles, including the Potentate and Chief Rabban from Anah all joining together for a fun filled weekend in Skowhegan.

Let’s not overlook the four new clubs that came online this past Spring namely, the Kora Brewers Taproom #11, the Kora ATV Club, the Hillbilly, Turkey Gobblah Clan #187 and the new Country Aire Estates Kora Shrine Club in Dade City Florida.

Our trip to the Imperial Session in Daytona, FL will be remembered not for the session business but for John Mellor’s persistence to drive to Florida with Wayne and Cliff and ride the Daytona Race Track in his Mini Racer. Others of us enjoyed driving the cars in the Imperial parade.

I am still blown away by the number of Nobles and their ladies who went to Ottawa for the Northeast Field Days. I think it would be safe to say that the Hillbilly Degree will be the most memorable part of the trip. The Ladies Appreciation Night was another great night for memories thanks to Ills. Sir John Knox and Lady Becky.

We have four major events left for the year. One is the Membership Open House and Arch Degree to be held at Kora on October 28th; second is the Anah/ Becktash/Kora Visitation to be held in North Conway, NH November 3-4-5. third is the 12 Annual FEZtival of Trees November 18-25; fourth is the 4th

Quarter Business Meeting, Election of the 2018 Officers and Annual Christmas Party.

Thank you to the Nobility of Kora Shrine for giving Lady Phyllis and me the opportunity to serve in the honored positions of Potentate and First Lady. For us it will be the culmination of nine years on the line. Each year has its own special time for learning about the temple functions and the Potentate’s responsibilities. There are times when it can be very daunting however, it is the fellowship with the Nobility and their ladies that makes it a positive experience and worth the personal sacrifices, time, and effort.

Lady Phyllis and I wish to thank the Divan and their ladies for their support throughout the year. It is with their diligence to temple business and events that Kora has had a positive and successful year.

In closing, Phyllis and I want to wish your new Potentate and his Lady a most successful and productive year as the leaders of Kora Shrine. Our best wishes also go to the other members of the 2018 Divan.

With sincere gratitude, John and Phyllis Gailey Potentate and First Lady Kora Shrine 2017

As Paul Gardner, myself, and our ladies are just returning from an exciting and informative Membership Seminar, I believe Kora Shriners, is well on its way to improving membership. Some of the suggestion made by the Imperial Membership Team, Kora Shriners has already implemented.

We have a new Brew Club with over seventy-five members. We have a new Hillbilly Club with over fifty members that

were initiated at the North East in Ottawa, and more to come.We are well on our way of having a new ATV Club. Many of our other clubs and units have had a busy parade

season bringing awareness to Kora Shriners and the Hospital System.

We are working hard on implementing new ideas so that members and their families of all ages can enjoy the Shrine and one another’s company. If you have any ideas, please share them.

If you know someone that would make a good Mason or Shriner, send in a referral to the Imperial Membership Team. You can do this by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help us in making these good men Nobles of the Shrine. Or you can email:[email protected].

A reminder that we are selling raffle tickets for a lifetime membership to Kora Shriners. The tickets are $10.00 and are available in the Kora office. The drawing will be December 2nd, at the elections.

I am committed to doing everything I can to improve membership, R U?

Regards to everyone, and thank you for helping us reach our goal of improving membership.

RAFFLE

What a crazy year so far. Lots of up, downs, but a lot of fun for those that have taken part. The down sides were the circus which showed a net loss of about $5000 and the number of

new members of only 24 at this point. The circus attendance was down about 10,000 from a year ago which was the major reason for the loss. We need to have the nobility sell tickets and promote the circus if it is going to be successful. We still have about 40 nobles that used or gave away tickets that were used at the circus and have not been paid for. This is your responsibility to get this taken care of. You have been notified by mail and phone calls so get it done please. We need new members if we are going to survive. We have a lot of older members and they are being called by the black camel faster than we are getting new members. Do your part and help bring in some new members.

On the fun side there have been many new and enjoyable events for members to partake in. There are new clubs for you to join to have fun and fellowship. These are the Hillbillies, ATV club, and Brewers Club. Check them out if you think you might have an interest. There were the old stand- bys that were enjoyable. Ladies night was an enjoyable evening as always but not well attended. The Northeast in Ottawa was enjoyed by all who attended,.

2018 dues notices were sent out a month early this year and resulted in some confusion. This has had better results because of those who are snowbirds got their notices before they left. I am very pleased to report that over half of our nobility has already paid the 2018 dues and for this I am grateful as it makes my job easier. If you haven’t paid yet please do so before year end so we do not need to keep after you. There are still around 100 that have not paid 2017 dues. PLEASE pay them as you are subject to suspension on December 31st if they are not paid.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR HOSPITALS

The Carlton Club held their Second Annual Golf Tournament on August 26, 2017 at the Meadows Golf Course. We were notified that their charitable donation was to be for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The tournament raised $2,210 and a check for the same was presented to your Potentate by Aaron Palmer and Patrick LePlante. The Nobles of Kora Shrine wish to thank the Carlton Club for their charitable donation to our Shrine Hospitals for Children.

BOSTON HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston welcomes Eileen Skinner as administrator

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston is pleased to welcome Eileen F. Skinner, MHA FACHE, as its newest administrator. Skinner joins the Boston Shriners Hospital after many years as president and CEO of Mercy Health System of Maine in Portland, Maine. During her time at Mercy, she oversaw a significant healthcare system expansion and led the organization through a merger

with Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.“We are beginning a new chapter at Shriners Hospitals for

Children — Boston and we could not be more excited to have Eileen at the helm,” said Robert Baker, CPA, chairman, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. “She brings a track record of professional excellence and proven leadership that will allow us to expand the scope of our services and continue to carry out our mission of providing care to children regardless of their families’ ability to pay.”

Prior to her nearly 14 years of leadership at Mercy Health System and Hospital, Skinner served as executive vice president of the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation and chief executive officer of Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. A native of New Orleans, Skinner did her undergraduate studies at St. Mary’s Dominican College, where she received a double degree in biology and medical technology. She received a master’s degree in health care administration

Straight to the heartBoston nursing student wraps up

second summer as a Helen Lemieux ScholarWhile providing

patient care is at the forefront of what we do at Shriners Hospitals for Children, education and research are the other core pillars of our mission. The Helen Lemieux Straight to the Heart Summer Internship Program combines education and research to build upon the academic experiences of our next generation of care providers.

The program is named for the former First Lady whose fundraising project during her tenure was called Research – Straight to the Heart. The program was created to provide paid summer internship opportunities at Shriners Hospitals for students pursuing degrees in the medical professions. The program is designed to provide the interns hands-on training through participation in research projects and in clinical operations under the mentorship of outstanding clinicians, scientists and allied health care professionals in the areas of pediatric burns, orthopaedics or spinal cord injury. The goal of this internship is to enhance the students’ interest in pediatric health care, to encourage them to pursue one of Shriners Hospitals’ mission areas as their career and to become a part of the Shriners Hospitals’ health care team when they complete their studies.

Alice Li is a nursing student at Boston College. A rising junior, she just wrapped up her second summer as a Helen Lemieux Scholar at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. Li has always been familiar with the work at the Boston Shriners Hospital because her mother works in the research lab. For

both summer stays, Li selected Colleen Ryan, M.D., to be her staff mentor. Last summer, Li worked with Dr. Ryan on writing papers and shadowing in the operating room and nursing units. This summer, she continues to find opportunities to shadow nurses while writing and editing abstracts and helping with the development of content for a website dedicated to burn outcomes studies.

Li decided to return for a second summer because she wanted to be able to put the additional knowledge she picked up during her sophomore year of school to work. She is amazed at how much she learns from spending time with the nurses and attending multidisciplinary rounds. The techniques and terminology she is exposed to at the hospital give her a leg up when the semester resumes. “It is incredibly interesting here because so many of the kids have very complex issues but the nurses are able to handle every case so well and provide truly exceptional care,” said Li.

Through her experiences at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston, Li has an interest in becoming a pediatric ICU or OR nurse. Shriners Hospitals for Children wishes Alice the best of luck back at school. We’re quite certain Helen Lemieux would be proud of what you’ve accomplished.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Helen Lemieux Summer Scholar, details for next summer’s program will be available in early 2018.

Emily Mellish, a 2017/2018 SHC National Patient Ambassador

Emily’s mother, Joy, did not experience significant issues during pregnancy, but moments after Emily was born, that changed. Emily was rushed by ambulance to a hospital in a larger city only hours after birth, and spent her first two weeks in the NICU, where doctors gave her a complete assessment.

Emily was born with spina bifida, as well as severe scoliosis (missing eight ribs on her left side) a leg-length discrepancy, additional orthopaedic conditions, bladder and kidney problems and other issues.

When she was 6 weeks old, Emily had surgery to close the defect over her spinal cord. The following day, a long list of serious complications began, keeping her in the hospital for 28 days. During this time, the Mellishes learned about Shriners Hospitals for Children from a close friend. “It was comforting to know that even before I needed to worry about a place to take her orthopaedically, that someone had come forward and said there was a place where Emily would be taken care of,” said Joy.

Finding the Right TeamEmily was first seen at Shriners Hospitals for Children –

Erie when she was approximately 6 months old. There, she has undergone several surgeries. Other surgeries, including a VEPTR (Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib) procedure, which stabilizes the spinal curve and levels growth, were done through a collaboration between Shriners Hospitals for Children and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburg. Emily has also been seen at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia, where external fixators were used to straighten Emily’s leg at the knee, and increase leg length.

After this, she was able to ride a bicycle for the very first time. Emily always amazes her doctors with her “no limits” attitude. To see Emily’s story, please click on the link: https://lovetotherescue.org/free-to-be-me-emilys-story

Athletic Trainers: Experts in Injury Prevention and Treatment

By Brianna Santiago, MBA, LATC, Sports Health and Medicine Coordinator at the

Springfield Shriners Hospital

The Sports Health and Medicine Program at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield unites the expertise of physicians, surgeons, therapists and athletic trainers to care for children and adolescents with sports injuries. The athletic trainers are on the front lines of preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries related to physical activity.

Range of responsibilitiesThe athletic trainers in the Sports Health and Medicine

Program play a unique and important role both on and off the field, serving children under age 18, of all skill levels, in

a variety of settings. In addition to athletic training services, our staff trainers are responsible for providing educational and community outreach activities for schools and recreational and club sports teams.

The Springfield Shriners Hospital’s athletic trainers are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of acute and chronic sports injuries, including strains and sprains, tendonitis, neck and back pain, shoulder and arm pain, hip and knee pain, torn knee ligaments, meniscal tears, shin splints and fractures.

Sports Health and Medicine physician, Julio Martinez-Silvestrini, M.D., holds a monthly Sports Health and Medicine Clinic at the Springfield Shriners Hospital for athletes who have sustained injuries. Our athletic trainers refer athletes to this clinic and develop guidelines for returning to activity.

Compassionate care in the communityThe athletic trainers at the Springfield Shriners Hospital

provide their training services to a variety of sporting events, including youth wrestling and summer soccer leagues. Local high school wrestling coach Bill Meeker was one of the first coaches to take advantage of the hospital’s athletic training services.

“I’ve been involved with youth, high school and college sports for over 30 years,” he said. “Nothing compares to the value of an insightful trainer. The ability to rapidly assess an athlete can mean a world of difference. Adding in the ability to treat and plan only improves the experience.”

When an injury does occur, the Springfield Shriners Hospital team works with athletes, families and coaches to ensure a safe and swift return to play.

“At our state wrestling meet, we had a serious fracture,” added Meeker. “I know many could have addressed the injury competently, but our trainer efficiently stabilized the patient. Beyond that, she was able to provide a level of comfort to all those involved that I’ve rarely seen. I truly believe that what the Springfield Shriners Hospital offers is a step above what we see on most fields of participation.”

HAVE YOU NOTICED THE NEW DOORS?

Thanks to “Rick” Leger and the Androscoggin Shrine Club, the Kora Shrine Center has two new beautiful side doors. The heavy wooden doors at the side entrance have been replaced by two new brushed aluminum doors. These doors allow for easy access to the building when loading and unloading material. Rick has attached new hangers that allow for keeping the doors open without using the buckets of the past.

Moral of the story: Support the events of Units and Clubs and good things will come back to Shrine Center in return.

Thank you, Androscoggin Shrine Club!

Start Your Buses!

At the Annual Meeting and Installation in January, there were school buses on dinner tables as decoration. It was announced that they were also banks. I suggested that maybe it would be fun to fill a bus with their loose change at the end of the day and see just how much we could collect. The funds collected will be going directly into the Kora Transportation Fund. This was strictly a volunteer choice and not a competition.

Since January, the buses have been traveling over the highways and bi-ways of Southern Maine collecting loose change. As of the printing of this article, we have collected $650.00 from a total of 17 individuals or parties.

I would like to recognize those who have participated:

The Bonney family Crawford and Kathe Perry

Phyllis Gailey Moe Poirier

John Gailey Peter and Linda Provencher

Isabelle Gates Tom Ray

“Bunky” and Marion Hall Mike Roy

The Highlanders Craig and Dawn Rubner

Kennebec Valley Shrine Club Adam Tanguay

Donna Manson Gene and Lorraine Tanguay

Robert Taylor

There is still plenty of time to get your bus in or start a new one. It would be nice to see us reach $1,000.00. I know there are still some buses out and it is possible.

Thanks to all who have been working on stuffing the bus.

CONGRATULATIONS MID COAST SHRINE CLUB!The Mid Coast Shriners have for years been donating to the 100 Million Dollar Club.

In fact, I have been told that they started the forerunner to the 100 Million Dollar Club adopted by Shriners International in 1972. Since then they have had donations turned in for the 100 Million Dollar Club at every meeting. Over the past few years when we have gone down to a visitation or Potentate’s Reception, we always ask how much have you collected to date.

At the Mid Coast/ Waldo County Joint Annual Meeting on October 10, 2017, it was announced that they have exceeded the $500,000 mark. They were given a standing ovation for their success. We have been told to stay tuned for they are not done yet.

The Nobles of Kora Shrine offer their congratulations to our brothers of Mid Coast Shine Club for a job well done.

SHRINE CLUBSSome members may not be aware of the presence of

local shrine clubs in Koraland. Shrine clubs for years have been a way to further extend the fellowship of our fraternity. Clubs are localized to certain communities, making it more convenient for our nobles and their ladies to gather and socialize on a more frequent basis. Membership is open to any noble; you are welcome to join any shrine club you wish regardless of your home location. Shrine clubs generally meet in the Fall, Winter and Spring, moving functions outside for the summer months. Membership is extended to brand new nobles

for no dues assessment during their first calendar year as a shriner. Many newer members do not get the opportunity to experience all that the fraternity has to offer, these club meetings are a great way to meet fellow nobles and ladies.

This article should stand as an open invitation to all nobles not currently a member of a shrine club to seek out their local group, contact the person listed in this article and join in the camaraderie. The following clubs are actively meeting and welcoming new members.

See inside front cover for contact information.

UNIT’S COLONEL CORNERBy Kora Units Colonel Bernie McAllister

BANDby Steve Peterson, President

Another week has come to an end, it is Friday night with

the weekend on the horizon. It is time to reflect on 2017 and look to 2018. I want to thank every one for your support this year as we have

moved through a very busy year at Kora. The creation of 3 new clubs, Brewmaster, Hillbilly’s and ATV Club that are going to make us proud in the years to come. Congratulation to the club leadership for getting these off to a good start. In 2018 lets recommit ourself to the exsisting Units and Clubs and support them with our time and talent. We know that all of our Units and Clubs are the backbone of Kora Shrine.

Mike Higgins Kora’s Lt. Colonel, after serving for 6 years has decided to step down. On a personal note, I want to thank Mike for all of his hard work as Kora’s Lt. Colonel. Pat and Mike Higgins have been a good friend to Anne and I as we moved through many events and activities and many miles of travel. Thanks again Mike and Lady Pat!

By the time this is published, the hope are that we will have had another sucessful year under our belts with the 12th Annual Feztival of Trees. I want to thank all the units who help in a variety of ways during this imprtant event for Kora Shrine.

As we begin a new year with a new group of Directors and Offcers I want to extent each of you the hope for a very sucessful year.

With the Annual meeting in December and the Installation in January so begin a new year for Kora Shrine. I look forward to your continue support and with the assistance of a new Lt. Colonel we are looking forward to another great year.

On behalf of myself and Lady Anne and Mike and his Lady Pat, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Kora Band at the 2017 Fall Ceremonial

The Kora Shrine Band had another successful Summer. We participated in a number of parades as well as our Annual Summer Concert at the Oxford American Legion. Unfortunately, we did have to cancel our Annual OktoberFeZ due to lack of pre-ticket

sales. We only had a dozen tickets sold two weeks prior to the event and we would have needed to sell 120 tickets in order to turn a profit. The Band will be reevaluating this event and see if it will be feasible to hold it again in the future. Thank-you to all who have supported our OktoberFeZ in the past.

Again, the band is always looking for new members, so if you have ever played an instrument or would like to just “help out”, we welcome you to join the band unit or just “sit-in” at any of our rehearsals or meetings. For more details and exact dates contact Steve Peterson at 713-5318 or e-mail at [email protected].

Don’t forget to stop by and visit us in the band room at the top of the stairs, our door is always open and the music is always on!

BUCCANEERSBrandan Roberts, President and Scribe

It’s hard to believe that summer has ended and autumn has begun! The Buccaneers have had a productive parade season, marching alongside our ship at Old Orchard Beach for the Memorial Day Parade, the Summer Ceremonial in Skowhegan, the La Kermesse festival in Biddeford, the Lobster Bowl, Wilton Blueberry Festival, Western Maine Shrine Club parade in Rangeley, Northeast Field Days Parade in Canada, and last but not least, at the Fryeburg Fair. A special thanks to the volunteers who stepped up to tow our ship for the parades! Our summer was busy and we enjoyed every minute of it!

In addition to these events, we made a presence at the Kora Kares Ride In as well as helping set up a hoedown for Ill John and Lady Phyllus. In regards to the hoedown, Lady Lorraine and Noble Gene would like to thank everybody that helping: «Brandan for his artistic talents. The Funsters and Divan Ladies for helping out with food, and Ill. John and Lady Phyllis for their inspiration.» What’s more, the Ladies Appreciation Night was a success with one of the many highlights being the anniversary dance in which all of the married couples danced until the number of years they had been married was called until only the longest-wed were dancing. Congratulations to Tony and Bonnie Perkins for setting such high aspirations to those attending!

Finally, if you would like to join the ranks of the Kora Buccaneers, the summer may be over but another year is just around the corner! We’re a family-orientated unit that enjoys meeting and greeting the children attending the Circus as well as various parades across Maine dressed up as friendly pirates. If interested, contact any of the Buccaneers and we will be glad to send you information and an application! We hope to see you soon!

FUNSTERS by Adam ‘Simba’ Tanguay, Director

GREETERSBy Craig Rubner, Scribe

Well the parade season comes to end with Fryeburg Fair. Looking back from the last sands, I believe that we only had two parades left. The two were Buckfield and Fryeburg Fair. Both parades had great turn outs. In Buckfield, we witnessed the return of a old but beloved costume. That would be Bullwinkle wore by none other then our very own Bunky Hall. It was great seeing Bunky in costume again after so long. And in Fryeburg, I would like to thank our brother from Evening Star in Buckfield for the use of his four wheeler to pull the train in the parade. I was also able to introduce my new toy which I hope to use in next year’s parades. It’s a mini jeep, bigger then the renegades karts but less maneuverable. I hope that our snowbirds have a safe winter at there winter stomping grounds and they make it back safely next year. As for the upcoming events we still have the Feztival of Trees, Kora’s Christmas party/election of officers before we finish off this year.

What a great summer we had. It’s been a busy time supporting Kora at the Summer Ceremonial, Ride-In, and the Fall Ceremonial and one day Scottish rite class. We did have some very memorable Greeter outings. There was the Cabbage Island trip and Lobster feed. It was a very nice day and the boat ride out and back gave us a chance to catch up with old friends. We ran into Mark and Julie Geller who were on the trip with his dad and are doing well. Nice to see them again. Our next gathering was at the Maine State Museum tour. The exhibits were impressive, showcasing the history and industries that built our state. After the tour we all met up at the Red Barn. As always the food there was great. Then there was our latest get together at Maurice’s restaurant. So all in all it has been a busy and productive time supporting Kora, the Shrine and spending some time together.

It wouldn’t be right not to mention all the Greeters and their ladies that support our events. Thank you, we could not do this without you! If you haven’t seen the Kora mural from Frank Hilton and his Granddaughter, it is now mounted in our room and looks great. Mike Wise and Norm Rollins took this on and got it mounted. Peter White’s plan for a contest to improve attendance at Kora functions was approved by the Potentate and presented at the last stated meeting. Great job guys!

Now we are on to fall and all the activities that it brings.

CYCLE CORPSby Lenny Perkins, Scribe

Hello all – I know I’ve been slacking lately with reporting the news! The Cycle Corps has had a busy summer of parading and fund-raising to support the important work of the Shrine. We welcomed two new members, Nobles Scott McLean and Carl Pinkham, who have been wonderful additions to our little clan.

Our first parade of the season at Old Orchard Beach on Memorial Day was a success, even though it was a bit chilly…ooh, those ocean breezes….. Continuing on with parades in Skowhegan, Augusta, Lisbon, Yarmouth (good to be back there this year!), Wilton, Rangeley, and Greene, I am happy to say that we made it through without any serious falls or injuries – definitely a sign of a good year! Our cooking efforts at both the Maine State Trap Shooters competition and the Great Falls Balloon Festival added much needed greenbacks to our account, and I extend my thanks to those in the unit who stepped up to the plate (no pun intended!) to make sure that our food booths had the man (and woman) power needed. I would like to give special recognition to Bob McWilliam who was present every day at the trap shoot, along with my pal, Ernie Pinkham.

Although only a few members of the unit were able to participate in the Northeast Shrine convention in Ottawa as it conflicted with the Balloon festival, they were great representatives and won more valuable trophies to add to the Unit’s collection. Thanks to Bob McWilliam, Mark DeBlois, Carl Pinkham and Scott McLean for your marvelous work in bringing home trophies for placing in the obstacle course and inspection. And thanks to Ann Boudreau for making sure our boys looked presentable at inspection! As the only significant other, you had a great responsibility to keep these guys respectable and you handled your assignment well! We are already preparing for next year’s Northeast in Vermont.

The bikes are now being prepped for their long winter’s

Celebrating another win at Northeast!” Pictured from left to right: Bob McWilliam, Carl Pinkham, Randy Murray, Scott McLean, Marc Deblois

nap, and the unit is looking forward to just spending time together doing some fun activities. In addition to supporting other unit and Shrine activities over the next few months, we are also looking forward to our annual Holiday gathering with potluck and yankee swap hosted by Noble Bob Levesque and Lady Wendy, and a “celebrate the unit and ladies” dinner in early January.

Until the next time….peace and happiness to all! Lenny

HIGHLANDERS by Everett Kaherl, PP, Scribe

The leaves are falling, the trees are the colors of the Royal Stuart tartan, and your Kora Highlanders are standing down from another busy summer. We have spread the word of Shrine far and wide throughout the jurisdiction, while bringing the public a taste of the beauty of the highland pipes and drums.

The parade season is always a busy one for us, and the dedication shown by the pipers and drummers is outstanding, but as is the case with many things in life, it is what is not seen that is truly amazing. What is not seen is the dedication of the ladies and families of the Highlanders who support us in our parading and encourage us in keeping our skills with the instruments. It seems that the end of a parade season is a great opportunity to shout out a hearty Thank You! to those who sacrifice family time and togetherness to make their contribution to Shrine. So, thank you Ladies, for all that you do in our cause.

Highlanders New Bass debut at Highland Games

Soon we will be manning the tables at the door of Kora for the Feztival of Trees. It is always fun to watch the families and kids come through the door. The excitement on the kids’ faces it priceless. Greeters you once again stepped up and supported the Feztival auction room with the donation of a $200 for an LL Bean Gift card. Lastly if you haven’t seen it yet, the signup sheet for the Feztival will be out soon. Please help out as much as possible. Be happy, be safe and see you at Kora.

The Highlanders were pleased to represent Kora at this year’s Maine Highland Games at the Topsham Fairgrounds on August 19th. We participated in “massed bands” with a number of other pipe bands, and played throughout the day on the grounds. The games are an annual event celebrating Scottish heritage and tradition with events such as sheep dog demonstrations, skill and strength competitions such as tossing the Caber, which is kind of like trying to lift and toss a telephone pole, and plenty of traditional music, dancing and craft demonstrations.

We were honored to be one of six Pipe Bands chosen to participate in this year’s celebration and we had the opportunity to play both individually and with the other bands several times throughout the day. The Highlander Ladies were there, as always, to ensure that we were well cared for during the daylong event with food, drink and encouragement in abundance.

Most importantly this event was yet another opportunity for us represent Kora to the community at large and spread the word about the Shrine’s good work.

We will be presenting the Arch Ceremony at Kora in conjunction with the Second Section at the temple open house on Oct. 28th. The Arch Ceremony with a touch of the Highlands.

And now…no, there will be no winter hibernation for the pipes and drums…we begin to work and plan for next year. Further, the Highlanders begin to put together the new tunes that we will present during the coming Shrine year. Planning is ongoing for the Robbie Burns Night (see announcement) when all good Scots come together to celebrate the birthday of Brother Robbie Burns, poet laureate of Scotland. Following that, we begin the preparation to honor our Irish brethren on St. Patrick’s Day. Like dominos, the days fall quickly and we are very, very busy!

The Highlanders are a vibrant, growing unit comprised of a core of dedicated individuals and well augmented by a similarly dedicated group of guest musicians. We take great pride in providing the music for ceremonials and giving to the public a view of what Shriners do to support our hospitals at civic functions, weddings and funerals.

Keep in mind that Kora Highlanders meet every Wednesday evening at 6:30, at the Shrine Temple, throughout the year, to practice our art. We always welcome those who might be interested in joining us, or who are curious about what makes us do what we do.

KARTSby Dan Guilmette, Scribe

Nobles and ladies,Summer is gone and apparently so was I as I missed the

deadline for the last Kora Sands… Oops! So there’s a bit to catch up on. Here we go.

First and foremost we would like to welcome Brother Noble Mike Braley and his Lady Tanya to the Shrine, and to the Kart Unit. Mike attended Summer Ceremonial this year and jumped right in with both feet.

LEGION OF HONORby Bob Maxfield, Scribe

There were nine Legionnaires in Rangeley on August 12, 2017 for the Potentate›s reception. The parade route was through the center of town where we were greeted by lots of well wishers. Our unit looked sharp as usual. It was great having the trailer to allow more senior members the opportunity to participate by riding.

and at: www.korashriners.org

Our trip to Ottawa for the NSA Fall Field Days was spectacular. It was a long bus ride, but well worth the trip. Some of the Legionnaires attended a Hillbilly degree including our own Commander, Tony Perkins. He is pictured wearing his new hat and sporting a Possum eating grin. Many members also cheered on other units of Kora during their competitions. It was a great time and Kora walked away with a few trophies. The parade, which included units belonging to many of the Northeast Temples, was a site to see. There were eight Legionnaires that were able to march in it.

The Lord Elgin Hotel was absolutely beautiful and was right in the center of town which made it easier to walk around and take in the sites. Parliament was only a few blocks away so we were able to see a wonderful light show in celebration of Canada›s 150th year celebration. The people of Ottawa were fantastic and accommodating.

Work on the Karts will continue this winter; plans to update and overhaul several karts should take place with a few work parties. The karts really shine after a little polishing!

Of course, we are always looking for new members, if you are interested or know of someone who is, just look for the yellow shirts, or contact our Unit Director Chris Bartsch. Finally, as the holidays near and pass, we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy new year. Take care!

The Parade season was packed and of course we always have fun at very parade, but there are a few that stood out. The July 4th Parade in Augusta was a well-attended parade, and some of us needed to be shoe-horned into our karts after a great Unit BBQ hosted by Jaison Hall and his Lady Cindy. The Richmond Days Parade had a great showing from the group as well. It’s a short parade but a super fun local parade that we all enjoy.

This year’s Parade in Rangeley I am told got a bit of a late start due to the Kart Truck being stuck behind an accident down the road a bit, but the unit scrambled, worked together and got lined up for the parade just in time. The energy continued routine after routine throughout the parade, sometimes without pause. A great show for the crowd and fun for the drivers too.

Northeast Shrine Association Field Days was a great time this year and proved to be well worth the trip. Nobles Bernie Fortin, Ken Gotreau, Matt Ouellette, and I represented the Kart unit in proper fashion taking home 2 trophies, 2nd place in the obstacle course and we tied for 2nd in inspection with the Cycle Corp.

In front, Noble Ken Gotreau. In back Nobles Matt Ouellette, Bernie Fortin, and Dan Guilmette represented the Kart Unit at the Northeast Shrine Association Field Days.

MOTOR CORPSby Kevin T. Cole, Scribe

Greetings fellow Nobles:Our last official parade was at the Fryeburg Fair on Saturday,

October 7. The weather was pleasant until after the parade, so most of us didn’t have to rush to put tops up when the rain came later on. We had a fine turnout with seven cars. As we passed the reviewing stand, the announcer recited our motto: “We ride, so others can walk.” The spontaneous applause following that announcement was gratifying, indeed. Let’s always remember that the purpose of our unit’s existence is to support Shriners’ Hospitals and the awesome work that they do for children. The camaraderie and fun times we experience at unit activities are sure to follow whenever we gather in support of that cause.

Many thanks to all of our members for their participation in parades this year. Thanks for juggling work schedules. Thanks for adjusting priorities. Thanks for all of the miles you drive. Thanks for bringing your ladies. Thanks for polishing your cars to make them look their best at the lineups. Thanks for making the Motor Corps vibrant and fun.

As we start thinking about putting our cars away for the winter, let’s also think about how we can make the Motor Corps even better next year. Don’t forget to record your vehicle’s registration renewal and insurance information which we’ll be seeking in April.

To our fellow Nobles with convertibles, antique autos or specialty cars, who are thinking of joining us, please stop thinking about it and just do it! We’d love to have you and we are certain you’ll have fun riding with us. If you’re interested, contact any member. What? You don’t know who to call! Well, my number is 207-775-7954 and my e-mail is [email protected]. There; no more excuses. We look forward to hearing from you.

See you on the highway in the Spring!

James “Ed” Johnson Recognized for 50 Years As A Shriner

Sometimes, the personal touch makes sense. Kora Recorder Paul Sherman knew Charley Bonney’s family spent time on Bailey Island and asked if he would deliver a 50 year recognition pin and certificate to a Bailey Island Shriner. So on Sunday, October 1, 2017, Past Treasurer Charley Bonney presented a 50 year pin and certificate to James E. (Ed) Johnson at his home on Bailey Island. After a nice conversation with Charley, Ed (a young 89 years old) had to leave to visit a friend to watch a Patriots game! Congratulations Ed!

Kora Kampers annual fall meeting took place at Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough on September 8, 9 and 10th. We had 27 members present plus 6 guests: Tom & Barb Hargreaves from Aleppo Temple in Massachusetts; Fred and Nancy Simmons, and Jim and Diane Chase from Bektash Temple in New Hampshire.

Early birds came on Thursday, September 7; we had happy hour and a campfire; Friday, September 8 remainder of campers arrived. We had happy hour, some folks went out to area restaurants and then we had a group campfire later that night at sites provided by Tom Bayley for our events.

Saturday, September 9 we gathered for a chinese auction, business meeting, happy hour and barbeque prepared by Dan

by Rick Hersom, Vice-President

As the high school football season prepares itself for the upcoming playoff, the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl board of Governors are preparing themselves for the 29th annual game. The game will again be played at Robert Hill Stadium on the campus of Thornton Academy in Saco.

This game would not be successful without the support of our Nobles and their ladies, our Clubs and Units along with our friends and community support.

This year we are proud to say that we will be sending checks to both Boston and Springfield Hospitals in the amount of $20,000.00 each. We will also be sending a separate donation to the potentate and the transportation fun.

Samuel Kelly of Mechanic Falls will have his dues paid for by the MSLBC Board of Governors for turning in his sold book of tickets .

The board of Governors meets on the first Monday of every month and are always looking for new members and ideas. Our next meeting is Nov. 6th at Kora Shrine Center at 6:00pm.

TURKEY GOBBLAH CLAN #187by Chris DiSotto, Raban of the Clan

Welcome to Kora Temple’s newest Club! On August 17th more than 50 Nobles and their ladies made the journey to Ottawa, ON to attend the Hillbilly Degree and become members of the Imperial Clan of the Grand and Glorious Order of the Hillbilly Degree. It was an unforgettable experience and all of us are grateful to our Kuzins from Moonlighter’s Clan #149 at Tunis Temple for making this all possible. When we returned home, with our Illustrious Potentate’s permission, myself, Bernie McAllister and Mark Carter petitioned the Imperial Clan for a charter to form a Clan at Kora and it was immediately granted. We had a meeting to elect officers and approve by-laws in which our officers were elected as follows: Chris DiSotto, Raban of the Clan, Rob Madore, Keeper of the Cob, Mark Carter, Guardian of the Still, Bernie McAllister, Keeper of the Quill and Marc DeBlois, Keeper of the Till. Our first successful event was on October 7 where we were invited to parade with our families at the Fryeburg Fair Parade. For those who are curious, the Hillbilly Degree as well as its accompanying Ma’s Degree are one of the few rituals in Shrine. It is a fun Degree designed to be a fundraiser for the Clan, which has a sole purpose of raising funds for the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children and the Kora Temple Transportation Fund. If you are already a Hillbilly and wish to join our clan, contact the Keeper of the Quill, Bernie McAllister for information. If you are interested in taking the Degree or your lady would like to take the Ma Degree, please get in touch with Bernie or myself and we will be glad to get you an application. Currently we are working to put something together for this fall before the weather turns too cold. Stay tuned for great events coming your way to help us raise money for the kids.

Turkey Gobblah - at the fair!

Happy fall everyone! What lovely weather we are having!!!!! I just love Maine as most of you do. I am so thankful that we do not live any place else with all that's going on in our world. Prayers from all of us go out to all of the other people who have lost a lot of themselves with the hurricanes, floods and forest fires. Homes are gone, items that we hold so dear to us are gone and most of all, many people have been taken home to God.

Now for the Widows Club news – This month, October 12 we had the election of our officers. They are as follows:

President ¬– Eileen M. Fales - 782-3586Vice President – Lu Farrington - 782-1567Secretary – Joan Gellatly - 783-9803Treasurers – Jean Lowell - 854-9420And – Ruth Lowell - 878-3835To become a member you must send your dues of only

$10.00 to Jean Lowell, 89 Glenwood Ave., Westbrook, ME 04092Our November meeting will be on Nov. 20th at Kora Temple

on senior day at 11:30 am for lunch, and to view the trees.December 7th, we will meet at Eileen Fales home, 9 Novella

Street, Lewiston at 11:30 am for our annual Christmas party. All you need to do is call Eileen at 782-3586 to make your reservation for the party gathering and then all you have to do is bring a $5.00 gift all wrapped for the gift exchange. Lunch will be served there. There will not be a snow date.

January, February, March, April, May and June meetings will all be at Rolandeaus Restaurant, Washington Ave., Auburn – off exit 75. Roland and Nick take very good care of us there, the prices are great and the food is simply wonderful!!!! Again, all you have to do is call Eileen Fales at 782-3586 by Monday of the second week in the month for your reservation. I do have an answering machine so you can leave a reservation and I will just put your name down that you are coming to the meeting.

Please remember – most all meetings are the second Thursday of each month except for November and December.

Now for some unhappy news – we have lost 2 members of our founding ladies of the Kora Widows Club – Virginia (Ginny) Houston and Phyllis Philbrick this summer. Our hearts and prayers go out to their families. We will miss them terribly. If you know of a Kora widow, please let her know about us. We are here to help them with this new life that God has given to them. As always, we hope that you won't need us but if you do, we are here.

We want to wish you all a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and Valentines Day.

We want to thank our potentate, John Gailey and his first lady, Phyllis for a year well done. Thanks for all that you did for all of us. The trip to South Dakota was a really nice trip and great time for all who attended. Thanks again!

We also want to say "congratulations" to our new potentate Douglas Phinney and his first lady for the year 2018. We are here for you folks as well.

I want to wish you all a nice winter with lovely snow flakes and soft blowing winds. Take care of yourselves and make sure that you get your flu shots! If you will be traveling be sure to travel safely to and from your destination!

We will see all of you next year! I thank you for your time. Happy New Year 2018. Eileen Fales, President of Kora
