DO YOU SHOP WITH AMAZON?Consider using Amazon Smile! Every time you shop at smile.

amazon.com, Amazon gives right back to charity. Shriners Hospitals for Children recently received a quarterly donation of $21,111.55 thanks to customers using the program!

To date, AmazonSmile has donated a total of $229,631.61 to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

As we continue moving forward during these difficult times, we see some of the restrictions eased a little. Hopefully, we can have some of our meetings and events as planned. I realize that we will have restrictions on the number of people attending, but we will do our best to accommodate everyone if you make your reservations early.

On October 3, we held a Ceremonial and initiated two new Nobles into the Shrine. I want to congratulate and welcome them to Kora. I wish we could have had many more. Can we all try and find one new potential candidate for later this fall? I want to congratulate and thank the Kora Kraftsman for their outstanding work. The Ceremonial went exceptionally well.

Even during this pandemic, time flies by. We are already into the last quarter of the year, and soon elections will be upon us. Although our year has been affected by COVID- 19, it has been interesting and rewarding. We hope to regain some normalcy soon. Hopefully, things will be a lot better for next year.

As November approaches, so does the Feztival of Trees. The committee has been working extremely hard to make the event possible through these difficult times. I have no doubt we will have a successful event, but it will be different. The amount of work going into planning is enormous. Thank you all!

The following is a list of our upcoming events. Please be aware that changes are possible due to possible changes in restrictions.

November 20 thru the 28th is our Feztival of Trees. On December 5, we have our scheduled business (stated)

meeting and elections. Please register with Kate no later than November 25, so we can make arrangements to accommodate you. Using current restrictions, we can have no more than one-hundred on each floor. We are using the dining hall and ceremonial floor, which would allow up to two-hundred people. We can have no interaction between the people on each floor, not even after the meeting. Unfortunately, it will be men only.

On New Years’ Eve, there is a dance planed in a 1920’s theme, with music by the Veggies.

Soon 2020 will be a memory, and hopefully we can get back to doing what Shriners do.

On October 3, Kora had its first Zoom-Ceremonial. With the assistance of some very talented videographers and tech “gurus”, along with the ever popular Kora Kraftsmen, we welcomed two new Nobles to our ranks. The ability for Nobles to watch from home was a new experience, and we have received good feedback. We still have a few candidates preparing to join our Caravan, and they will be able to join us on December 5. We will be having a Cold Sands ceremonial after our stated meeting. If you know of any Master Masons who would like to join, please let us know so we can make it happen.

If you have a minute, take a look at the new BeAShrinernow.com website. It has been completely redesigned. The petition for membership is now on-line, and makes it even easier to refer new candidates and get them started.

There are still some Nobles who are “lost in the desert.” We haven’t heard from these folks and they are at risk of being suspended. Perhaps you are aware of one? Encourage them to contact the membership committee or the Kora office.

If you know of a Master Mason who would like to join our ranks, get them a petition, or drop us a line at [email protected]. Remember, any Noble who is the first line signer for two or more new Nobles will get next year’s dues paid. It’s easy to send in a referral by going to beashrinernow.com/referral. They will help get things moving and make these men Masons and Nobles.

KORA SANDS FALL 2020

GREETERSBy Craig Rubner, Scribe

As we enter the last quarter of what has been an amazingly complex year may this find you and your loved ones in good spirits and health. From learning to use Zoom for unit meetings to supporting Kora at drive up events and moving to an online store for clothing we have pitched in to help out as much as possible. For anyone who missed the last online store opening, the store will be open again, possibly later this year or after the holidays. Keep an eye on the Kora Konnections for the dates.

Thank You so very much to all who have shopped at the on line store, your support has been so important and enabled us to continue our mission as Shriners!

On behalf of the KORA KLOWNS, we understand the uncertainty, anxiety and challenges that everyone is experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a unit, we have made every effort to reach out to our members to make sure that they are safe and/or in need of any support. With that being said, we would like to extend the same offer to all other units and members of the KORA SHRINE. Although the term “We are all in this together” has been posted and used by many other organizations, combining our efforts and resources is now more important than ever.

Over the last several weeks the KORA KLOWNS have ventured into the “New Norm” of holding meetings via ZOOM and although trying to manage a group of KORA KLOWNS is harder than herding

Greetings from the Kora Drifters! The Trikes are all put way for the year, we did manage to get a few socially distant practices in and worked on a few new maneuvers. Although most of the time we were able to spend together this summer, was either camping or gathering around a camp fire for a weekend at Bernies…. Where meat will be cooked and refreshments will be drunk.

After a bit of a hiatus, we are now continuing to work on the unit room. It’s starting to take shape as the drywall goes up and the plans for a new bar are in the works.

The group continues to think about new ways to get involved and different opportunities to embark on to help raise money. But it is sliding around on pavement that we look forward to most, and we are all hoping to get back to doing what we do best (having fun) very soon. Be safe out there!

cats, the result has definitely been comical and provided a much needed break from reality for many of us.

As cancellations continue to be announced, with the most significant for our unit being the annual SHRINE CIRCUS, the KORA KLOWNS are faced with the realization that our traditional fundraising efforts will not be available for the immediate future. In fact, our involvement and interactions during these events could be changed or eliminated forever. With that being said, conversations related to our future and options have begun. Like many other units in the same position, moving past the disappointment and acknowledging the need for change has not been easy. However, we believe that there are many KORA SHRINE members who may have a new idea that would work and there has to be an opportunity for all of us to share and consider our options. As you know, most individuals and units will not be able to generate the donations that are required to support the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children and it will need to be a group effort as I think we can all agree that doing less is not an option.

Although we are hoping that our need to “herd cats” online will be over soon, it has allowed us the opportunity to coordinate much needed birthday parades, experience new car demos, visits to grocery stores and provided the occasional live weather forecast from Florida. Ultimately it allowed us to “Just Have Fun” which is what the KORA KLOWNS are all about. If interested in being part of this amazing unit, please feel free speak to any one of our KLOWN members or email Mike “DewGee” Robitaille at [email protected]

At the time of this writing, we have learned of the passing of Brett “CoCo” Misenor to the Celestial Lodge Above.  A member of Saco Lodge #9 and York Chapter 5 Royal Arch Masons and the Kora Shrine.

Brett was an active Clown with our unit and was actively involved in bringing smiles to the faces of those he met.  As we will all miss him dearly, the love of his life was his family.  His wife Kathryn and daughter Sara are forever in our thoughts.

His memory is faithfully cherished within our hearts.  RIP CoCo

Nobles Only due to COVID restrictions

3:00 p.m. Temple opens – Stated meeting4:00 p.m. Elections of Temple Officers

5:30 p.m. Dinner servedThis year has created some challenges for Kora as an

organization, but we are at a point where it is important to transact our business and to conduct our Annual Elections in a safe and responsible way. We are in hopes to be able to hold a Christmas Holiday Party with our Ladies at a future date.

Illustrious Potentate Sonny Jutras has scheduled our Fourth Quarter Stated meeting and Annual Election of officers for Saturday, December 5, 2020.

Current state guidelines will allow us to conduct this meeting at our Temple facility. The plan will be to meet to conduct required business, hold our elections, and enjoy some hospitality and a meal.

If the response warrants, we have a plan in place to utilize both the Dining Room and the Ceremonial Hall to accommodate attendees. The following guidelines will be in place:

ALL registrations must be received at the Kora Office no later than Friday, November 25, 2020. NO EXCEPTIONS. Registration will be cutoff when capacity limits are reached (100 per floor – 200 Maximum)

All Unit rooms will be closed.Temperature checks will be conducted for all attendees

upon entering the building – masks must be worn - current 2020 Dues Card required.

Based on attendance, if two floors are to be occupied, no interaction between floors will be allowed. A video/Zoom feed will be set up for viewing

Registration may be made by calling the Kora Office at 207-782-6831 or by mailing the registration form found in this issue of the SANDS. Please also see the order of business to be conducted.

As an organization, we are becoming increasingly more dependent on electronic media (computers) to communicate.

The Kora Communications Committee is looking for Nobles to commit some time AND expertise in coordinating, updating, and maintaining

our website. Information changes regularly, and can be a great resource for communicating to our members and others interested in Kora Shriners.

If you feel you have the time – the experience – and the desire to help, we want to hear from you. Marc DeBlois, our present Webmaster – will continue in that role, but he can use assistance keeping the website current.

For more information please contact the Recorder, John Knox, at [email protected]

We are also looking for more Nobles and Ladies to become involved in the Communications Committee. The committee reviews submissions for the quarterly SANDS and weekly Kora Konnections.

They can be a member of the

“KORA-RONA Class of 2020”

We will need to “social distance” at this one, but just maybe in 2021 we can be doing the

“Shriner’s Walk”.

Use the application in this issue – have two members sponsor the new Noble, and bring him

to the Ceremonial on December 5.Please call the Recorder with candidate names prior to the meeting (749-9424) We can read and vote on peti-

tions during the business portion of the meeting. Fees for this initiation are $85 – and will cover dues for 2021. Remember, ALL attending must pre-register with Kate at the office (782-6831) by November 25, 2020.

MEMBERSHIP DUES OPTIONSMembership Dues notices for 2021 have been distributed by

Shriners headquarters starting in late August by email, and in October with hard copy notices mailed to all members. If you have not yet submitted your 2020 dues, they must be received at the Kora office by the end of December, or your membership will be in jeopardy of suspension. If there are circumstances that create a hardship for you, please contact the Recorder to discuss options. We can work with you in these very challenging times. There are also other options open to members and paying your dues.

I would encourage you to enroll in WebFez – this site allows members to enter any changes in personal information (address, telephone, email, etc.) directly on line. It also provides a simple portal to “Pay My Dues”. Once logged in to your personal page, you will see an icon to “Pay My Dues” next to your name – simply click on the button, and follow the directions to enter your payment information.

For members wanting to do away with the annual hassle of paying dues and assessments, there are several options to defer a portion or all of your dues by purchasing Life Time memberships in the various categories.

PCM – Permanent Contributing Member – by submitting a onetime payment of $150, you purchase a lifetime contribution to our hospital system, and your annual assessment is reduced by $5 each year. The advantage of this purchase is that the funds go directly to the Permanent Endowment investment accounts to support Shriners Hospitals for Children.

PCLM – Per Capita Life Member – by paying a fixed amount based on your age, you purchase a lifetime Per Capita assessment, which is currently at $30 per. This per capita assessment is to support the operations of Shriners International and is subject to change, when approved by the delegates to Shriners International.

The per capita fee is fixed at 20 times the annual assessment, which currently would be $600. When paid, annual per capita assessments are removed from your annual dues.

Temple Life Membership – The last option for members is to purchase a Life Time Temple Membership, which would eliminate future dues assessments. A Life Membership is based on your current age per the table below –

Our by-laws allow for members who are age 65 and over to purchase a Life Membership by paying 10 times the annual dues (currently $50) or $500. For members under the age of 65, the cost is 20 times annual dues, or $1000.

One final option being implemented this year is to allow Nobles to prepay your future dues with Regular Recurring Payments. This option is only available through WebFez.

If your annual dues are fully paid for 2021 (due by 12/31/2020) you can establish a regular recurring payment to spread your dues payment for 2022 over the first 10 months of 2021. At the end of October your dues for the next will be fully paid with 10 monthly installments of $8.50 or 4 quarterly installments of $21.25. The button will appear on your personal WebFez page next to your name – click the button and follow the screen prompts. I can provide a step-by-step outline of the WebFez pages to help guide you through this process.

As in the real world, there are transaction fees associated with payment by credit or debit card. For the immediate future, Kora will absorb these costs and evaluate in the future. Typically these fees are roughly 3% of the transaction, so for the monthly $8.50 a fee would be about $0.25.

As always, if you have questions, please contact Kate in the Office, or the recorder at [email protected].
