Brody was chosen from all schools in the Riverina. We wish Brody luck in all his future endeavours. Year 12: My congratulations to our outgoing students who have finally reached the end of their HSC studies. It was wonderful to see this punctuated so magnificently at the Year 12 Formal event last week. Our students presented superbly, which is no surprise, and the organisation of the event was excellent. Well done to Mrs Brissenden for her fine efforts and an enormous thank you to Year 12 for their generous gift of the House Cup. Congratulations, also, to our incoming Year 12 students who had their Year 11 graduation ceremony this week. May I take this opportunity to wish you all the best for what lies ahead. Selective Education @ KHS: As we come near the end of our first decade as a partially selective school I am looking forward to engaging in a workshop with parents, students and teachers of our selective stream. On Thursday next week (29th November) Director Jenene McGrath and I will be hosting a discussion workshop focused on our selective stream. Our purpose is to promote constructive conversation and the development of visions for the future direction of selective education at our school. Our intention is to use feedback from our school community to inform future strategies and to guide ongoing development for this crucial part of our school’s portfolio. I believe that we are doing tremendous work for our selective stream students, and if there is a shortage in our efforts to evaluate our programs we are not doing justice to the learners in our selective classrooms. If we don’t enter into consultation about our education delivery then we are not maximising the potential to reach our school-wide educational goals. Our goal is to highlight the significant characteristics of selective education at KHS so that our students and community can easily recognise what we are doing to help our selective students learn and grow. To get there it is essential that we have considered information, feedback and ideas. Following from our workshop, Director McGrath and I will be collating feedback and using this to create a strategy for the ongoing education delivery of our selective stream. In doing so, we will keep you informed of collective feedback and how it is being used to form future directions. The workshop will take place in the school’s Library at 6.30 on November 29th. If you are certain that you will be attending please phone the school to let us know. If you are unsure, please feel welcome to arrive on the evening. Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to phone me at your convenience. Asbestos Up-date: On the matter of asbestos in the school I am happy to say that the situation is no different from our last newsletter. SafeWork NSW has provided the following information in regard to the current asbestos issues subsequent to a recent inspection: 1) The asbestos on site is in a bonded intact state, i.e. non-friable; 2) Cracked panels have been encapsulated firstly with a water and PVA Mix (10%), as well as a water based acrylic paint, then covered further with 4mm thick board; 3) All work is being conducted in accordance with the Code of Practice – How to Manage and Control Asbestos in the Workplace; 4) Work methods have also been developed in consultation with SafeWork NSW who are also in consultation with the maintenance contractor. A tender process is currently underway for a program of works to be undertaken during the vacation period. I reiterate from my previous newsletter article that the school remains a safe workplace and that the health and wellbeing of our students’ and staff continue to be our highest priorities. P&C: Our school is incredibly fortunate to have an active and involved P&C Association and I encourage as many parents and citizens from across the school to be a part of this tremendous group. Our P&C does so much to support the school and it is an excellent vehicle for communication between the school and its broader community. Many thanks to Dr Weerakoon (Head Teacher Science) who is conducting a survey to seek community members’ availability in the hopes that we can make our membership even stronger than it is. Please let us know your thoughts by completing the survey by following the link that has been emailed to all parents and carers and has also been uploaded onto our Facebook page. Year 7 2019 – Information update – Book Packs

Just a reminder that the Year 7 2019 learning requirements will include the bringing of a device to school each day. The only two subjects that isn’t included will be Mathematics and Visual Arts. Book packs will be available to purchase from Hunters Newsagency for $19.95, which will consist of a 5-subject book, a Visual Arts diary and a Mathematics grid book. We understand that bringing multiple books and a device is not ideal, that’s why we are offering a 5-subject book for students to take with them from class to class. A student’s Visual Arts diary, will be left in their respective Art classroom for safe keeping.

Any questions on this, please feel to contact the school for clarification.

Using a device in 2019 – Preparing students for future skills and opportunities.Technology should be integrated in meaningful ways to empower students to create and share their learning. Technology enables students to learn anytime and anywhere, and to make connections beyond the classroom. Effective use of technology is facilitated by classroom environments that are flexible and collaborative, resulting in learning that is more engaging and personalised. In 2019, Kooringal High School will be looking to promote the use of a device for Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11 students. It will be anticipated that Year 7 students will bring a device to school in order to connect to the current modes of learning environments that focus on critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity. Year 9 and Year 11 students will also be expected to bring a device to school every day. Year 8, Year 10 and Year 12 are welcome to bring a device to school in 2019 but it is expected that by 2020 all students at Kooringal High School should be using a device as an everyday part of their learning. Kooringal High School understands that this shift will be a change from the current expectations of book and paper, however, as a school we will be able to provide the supports to help students to connect to current educational standards to equip them for future needs. Attached are device specifications to assist parents and carers in making an educated decision around which device to purchase. This information can be taken into any electronic store as a guide. If there are any questions relating to the uses of a device or purchasing a device, please feel free to contact the school.

From 25 November to 10 December, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.

This year Wagga Family Support Service and the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services are presenting a book launch and information session to raise awareness of the 16 Days of Activism and the important issue of violence against women.

The Skinny Girl is Steve M. Matthews’ first adult novel. Although this is a work of fiction, it is based on interviews, research and published works. Raw, powerful and thought-provoking, The Skinny Girl explores the topic of domestic violence through a relationship between shy Daisy Croucher and popular pub local Jeff Singleton. The novel discusses the ways attitudes, values, and culture contribute to abuse, and the path to change.

The funds raised on the day from book sales will help to support women and children experiencing domestic violence, to remain living where they choose and have the violent person leave.

A Story of silence that must be told
