Photoshop: the program

Open the available version of Photoshop.This is how Photoshop 5.5 appears with anopen document [File/Open], most versionsof Photoshop will appear similar, withmore or less tools and tabs in the floatingpalettes. Hosta.jpg is the file name of this

digital image. The title bar (see below) of the image displays this informationincluding the displayed percentage [50%]and its "mode" [RGB].

Hosta.jpg is an RGB or red, green, bluecolor channel image (modes will bediscussed in more depth below). Abovethe image is the program menu bar,including File, Edit, Image, Layer, Select,Filter, View, Window and Help. To the leftis the toolbar and to the right the floatingpalettes, which can be accessed throughthe Window menu if not displayed onscreen. Each of these palettes havemultiple information tabs. Notice the toppalette has the Eraser Options tab open.This tab gives information about theeraser tool. Notice the eraser tool isactivated (appears with the whitebackground as opposed to the gray, non-active background) in the toolbar. Click onany other tool in the toolbar and that tools

options will be display in this tab of thefloating palette.

While selecting the various tools, noticethat many of them have a small arrowheadin the lower right corner. Position themouse over a tool that has one of thesearrowheads and hold down the mousebutton. A submenu of tools will appear.To access any of the new tools, while stilldepressing the mouse button, move thepointer to the tool of choice and release

the mouse button. The n ew tool willreplace the prior selected tool.

Another area of note is the lowerinformation bar.

This also shows the image percentage, asdoes the title bar, the uncompressed filesize/working file size and information onuse of the addressed tool. In this case theeraser. Click and drag to erase tobackground color.

Photoshop comes with predefined actionsinstalled for performing common tasks. You canuse these actions and further customize themto meet your requirements. Or, you can createnew actions or download actions made availablefor free by other Photoshop users and install itin your machine.

How to Install Photoshop Actions

The easiest way to install actions in Photoshop is to drag and drop the actions file on theopened photoshop window. This should work both on Mac and on Windows. However, if youwant to install the actions manually, you can doit by saving the ATN files first somewhere onthe file system then in Photoshop, open theactions palette and click the tiny triangle in theupper right corner. From the appearing menuchoose Load Actions, then choose the file fromthe file open dialog.
