[Photo by Amy Broadbent] Leno Ramirez Thursday was a day that annually has the attention of high school coaches statewide - and it didn’t disappoint. The OSSAA released its preliminary Average Daily Membership numbers for school, figures that determine classifications in sports. Some of the biggest changes after the numbers were released took place in Kingfisher County basketball. Three schools will change classifications in basketball and the one that had everyone talking Thursday sees a pe- rennial power moving down. As the numbers stand now, Okarche, with an ADM of 80.46, is the smallest school in Class A. However, with Cheyenne and Reydon expected to co- op in the sport, that will move them up to Class A and bump Okarche down to the state’s smallest class. “I think that certainly makes them the favorite,” said Lomega coach Kevin Lewallen, whose team is firmly entrenched in Class B with an ADM of 41.42, the smallest in Kingfisher County. Lewallen was referring to Okarche, which returns all five starters from last year’s Class A girls’ state title team. On top of that, they’re expected to get Randi Hufnagel back from a knee injury and have added depth in new superintendent’s daughter, Laci Friesen. “Class B was going to be up for grabs next year,” Lewallen said. “This changes the landscape in a big way.” As expected, Kingfisher is moving back to Class 4A after nearly a decade in Class 3A. Kingfisher has an ADM of 386.60, making it the fifth smallest in Class 4A as the numbers currently stand. Also moving up is Cashion, which is now in 2A. The Wild- cats have been bouncing be- tween Class 2A and Class A the past few years. Cashion has an ADM of 135.67. Hennessey (223.35) and Crescent (168.92) stay put in Class 2A. The numbers - and poten- tial changes - aren’t final. Schools have a limited amount of time to contest any discrepancies they may see in their numbers. The OSSAA board of directors will ap- prove the final numbers at the August meeting. The numbers also affect football for the 2014 and 2015 seasons as the district assign- ments for those seasons will be made in September. While no local schools are expected to change classifica- tions for those seasons, Kingfisher’s Class 3A could see some changes. $80 million and sold for $50million.

“The board has a laundrylist of things to do and we havethe ability to pass bonds, butyou can only do so much basedon your tax roll,” she said.

Cashion Schools will enterthe new school year with acarryover of $630,000.

“Unfortunately, schools donot get tax money until the stategets it which is usually in De-cember or March. Thecarryover is not enough to carryus to December, so the deci-sion was made to not rehire theschool counselor since our highschool principal had expertisein that area.

“Since then, the principalhas taken a job in the privatesector, leading us to hire a coun-selor. The high school princi-pal position duties will beshared between the elementaryprincipal and the superinten-dent,” Oard said.

Oard offered some goodnews in what might otherwiseappear to be a bleak financialpicture.

An improved valuationpractice by the Logan Countyassessor’s office has uncovered$431,000 in property taxes duethe school from previouslyunassessed or under-assessedproperty.

This money should becomeavailable to the school in De-cember.

Kingfisher County plans toswitch to the same valuationprocess as Logan County, which may lead to more fundsfrom undervalued or unvaluedproperty and equipmentwithin the district.

“This is a Godsend to us,”Oard said. “This money shouldstart coming in around Christ-mas. At that time we will lookat hiring another administra-tor and look at other facultypositions that are needed.”

Like other surroundingschool districts, Cashion is look-ing at a large turnover in staff, with 11 resignations.

Of that number, four wentinto the private sector, one re-tired, two left because of pro-motions, three took positionscloser to home and one re-signed in the spring prior to atermination hearing, Oard said.

All positions have beenfilled with the exception of anAdvanced Placement Englishteacher. Interviews for thatposition were scheduled onThursday.

“Our goal is to hire goodteachers and to do what is bestfor Cashion students. We areexcited that one-third of ourjuniors and seniors this yearwill be attending Francis TuttleTechnology Center,” Oard said.

Schenk then addressed theaudience about grants sayingthat grants are hard to acquirefor Cashion Schools since mostare need-based and Cashiondoes not have enough finan-cial need based on free andreduced lunch numbers and itis not a low-achieving district.

He said the elementaryschool did receive the Okla-homa Education TechnologyTrust grant for $40,000.

The grant was used to pur-chase 17 teacher laptops and anew student lab with 24 laptopsand 30 iPads. The high schoolwill apply for the same grant inthe spring.

Another elementary school

goal is improving the play-ground, Schenk said. So far,$25,999 has been raised throughfundraisers and matchinggrants from Modern Woodmenof America and the Masons.

In a question-and-answersession following the program, many district patrons ex-pressed an interest in morecommunity involvement onthe party of Cashion adminis-trators.

A series of questions on stu-dent motivation ended when aparent made the statement thatit was up to the parents to mo-tivate their children and theschool to educate.

In other business, Lion’sPresident Gerry Danley invitedthose with businesses to do-nate for the Lions teacher ap-preciation breakfast held ev-ery year prior to school start-ing.

Lion’s member Russ Adamsinformed the group thatCashion Lions has donatedover $100,000 in time, effortand money to the Cashion com-munity and would welcomenew members.
