Bigger tests are on the horizon, but no Class 2A team has been able to touch Cashion this far into the playoffs.

The Lady Wildats routed Ketchum 51-34 Tuesday night in Skiatook to stake claim to a 2A regional title and put themselves within one win of

the state tournament.Through three playoff

games, Cashion is winning by an average of 30 points.

It was up 20-8 after a quarter against No. 11 Ketchum and extended its advantage to 17 points by halftime.

Presley Payahsape scored

a game-high 17 points while senior guard Alix Robinson poured in 16 more.

Seventh-ranked Cashion (23-3) plays No. 1 and unbeaten Alva at 6:30 Saturday night for the area championship at Sperry.

A win puts the Lady

Wildcats in the 2A state tournament. If they can’t pull off the upset, they’ll get another shot Monday night in the area consolation championship.

Ketchum – Thomas 12, Campbell 11, Pendley 7, McGimpsey 3, Sharpe 1.

For the second straight year, Hennessey had the defense to beat Millwood.

And, for the second straight year, the Lady Eagles’ offense couldn’t close the deal.

The Lady Eagles were held to two fourth-quarter points Tuesday night in a 32-26 loss to the third-ranked Lady Falcons in their Class 3A regional championship at Millwood.

The 32 points were the lowest Millwood has scored in two full seasons. The second-lowest was the 34 points HHS gave up the Lady Falcons in the first round of last year’s 2A state tournament.

Hennessey led early, but

Kingfisher ’s girls put together a second straight double-digit win Tuesday a f t e r n o o n a n d w e r e rewarded with a trip to the area tournament.

T h e L a d y J a c k e t s controlled Cushing from the outset in their 4A regional consolation championship to claim a 45-30 victory at the APB.

The win qualified KHS for the area tournament, which was originally scheduled to begin Thursday at Edmond Memorial High School, but was delayed a day because of weather.

Mother Nature was also the cause of the Lady Jackets playing into the week as inclement weather pushed the regional back three days. It didn’t bother the home team as Kingfisher led

Cushing from the start and was up 24-14 on a Brooke Boeckman layup with 1:17 left in the first half.

That layup came off a Cushing turnover, one of 22 on the night for the Lady Tigers.

Cushing cut its deficit to six points at one point in the third quarter, but Kingfisher built it to as many as 16 in the fourth.

KHS had jus t one fourth-quarter field goal, but maintained its lead by making 5-of-6 free throws and holding Cushing scoreless for a stretch of 4:16.

Madison York led KHS (12-14) with 12 points. She scored 10 of those in the first half.

Kaleigh Stolz added seven of her 11 points in the second half.

Boeckman finished with eight.

KHS was set to play Newcastle when the area tournament resumed.

Newcastle has two wins over the Lady Jackets this season.

Jacket upset bid comes up short

Kingfisher has had some signature wins under second-year boys’ coach Jared Reese.

There were the comeback victories over Alva and Piedmont to win tournament titles in 2014. There was the big road win at Tuttle earlier this season.

On Tuesday night at the APB, the Jackets just missed out on what might have been the biggest to date.

Garrett Yost’s rushed shot at the buzzer was just off the mark, allowing No. 3 Victory Christian to escape Kingfisher with a 38-36 win in their 4A regional championship game.

The Jackets forced a turnover with four seconds left and trailing by two.

B r a d y n S h e p h e rd ’ s long in-bounds pass was caught by Jace Sternberger, who passed off to Marco Charqueno in what was supposed to be an attempted

game-winning trey.However, Charqueno

couldn’t handle the pass, which led to a scramble for the ball that Yost won before having to rush his shot.

The loss snapped a 12-game win streak for KHS (21-4) and sent them into the area consolation bracket against Weatherford on Friday afternoon.

Vi c t o r y C h r i s t i a n features senior guard Chris Crawford, an Oral Roberts University signee who didn’t disappoint.

He scored 22 points and made several big plays down the stretch, giving the Conquerors their late lead.

KHS countered with Sternberger, who posted 18 points and 12 rebounds. He scored 10 of his points in the second half when Kingfisher

erased most of a seven-point halftime deficit.

His shot while being double-teamed in the closing minute missed its mark, giving Victory Christian the ball with the two-point lead. A couple of quick KHS fouls (Victory Christian wasn’t yet in the bonus) set up the final turnover and shot to end the game.

No Jacket other than Sternberger was able to crack double digits. Charqueno had two second-half treys to score six points.

Dominant performances on Thursday night landed a pair of Kingfisher County girls’ basketball teams in the state semifinals.

Looking for its third consecutive state championship, Okarche got off to a solid start with a 67-43 win over Seiling in the Class A quarterfinals at Southern Nazarene University’s Sawyer Center.

Just a few miles away at State Fair Arena, the Lomega Lady Raiders pulled away from Leedey for a 61-46 victory in the Class B quarterfinals.

Okarche was set to play Cheyenne-Rey-don late Friday in the semifinals. Lomega played Erick in the semifinals earlier Friday

in a rematch of the 2013 state title game that Erick won in overtime.

The Lady Raiders were in a tight contest with Leedey, but outscored the Lady Bison 21-5 in the second quarter and weren’t threatened again.

Freshman Kenzie Lamer led Lomega (28-2) with 17 points. Maci Mendell added 12 and Rachel Yost 10.

Okarche was also in for an early struggle against Seiling, which was last year’s Class A runner-up.

Up three after a quarter, the Lady Warriors also kicked it into gear in the second quarter with a 16-6 run and steadily pulled away

from the Lady Wildcats.Bailey Vogt buried five 3-pointers and

scored 28 points. Twenty of those came in the first half.

Kenadey Grellner poured in 17 more while Hope Sellers scored 12.

Lomega is looking for a record 12th state championship. Okarche is gunning for its sixth title overall.

Just as following a nu-tritious and healthy diet is important for optimal human health, the same holds true for our furry, four-legged family members.

Dr. Elisabeth Giedt, direc-tor of Continuing Education, Extension and Community Engagement at the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences at Oklahoma State University, said proper nutrition for your pet will help ensure good overall health and performance, as well as help manage symptoms and pro-gression of specific diseases.

“When it comes to select-ing food for your pet, the choices in the supermarket and pet stores can be over-whelming. Your veterinarian is probably the best place to start regarding the appro-priate diet for your specific pet,” Giedt said. “There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a pet food, including your pet’s prefer-ence, economics, availability and any health issues that need to be addressed.”

There are ways to calcu-late the general nutritional requirements for your ev-eryday dog or cat, but the exact caloric needs of any individual pet will depend on genetics, environment, activity level and life stage. A family dog that is taken on frequent walks, plays fetch or runs around in the local dog

park has different food needs than an older, more seden-tary pet. Be sure to look at the caloric content of your pet’s food to make sure you are not over- or underfeeding. If that information is not on the label, contact the company or find it on the company’s website.

Giedt said the prevention of obesity if important for maximizing the health and lifespan of your pet.

“It’s always a good idea to regularly evaluate your pet to ensure proper body condition,” she said. “Your veterinarian can help you determine the proper weight for your specific pet. Ide-ally, your pet should have an hourglass shape when viewed from above,” she said. “Pet owners should easily be able to feel the pet’s ribs, but the animal shouldn’t have a bony ap-pearance.”

Some pet owners may feel they are doing the right thing by buying pet foods with terms such as premium, gourmet or organic on the labels. Although these terms are highly governed in hu-man foods, there are no legal definitions when it comes to pet food.

Pet owners also may question whether or not to add supplements to their pet’s canned or dry food, but Giedt said if your pet is eat-

ing a complete and balanced commercially available pet food, supplements are not recommended unless spe-cifically prescribed by your veterinarian.

“Make sure you talk to your veterinarian if you’re interested in using a particu-lar supplement for your pet, and be sure to let him or her know if you’re already giv-ing your pet a supplement,” she said. “It’s important to communicate this informa-tion to your vet so your pet receives optimal care.”

Not only should pet own-ers give serious consideration to what their pet should be eating, they also must keep in mind the types of food their pet should not consume un-der any circumstances. There are many foods pets should not eat because they are toxic or because they can cause other health problems.

Foods high in fat such as chicken skin, as well as grapes, raisins, bread dough, chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and foods sweetened with xylitol can be extremely dangerous or even deadly for your pet.

“I know pet owners want to do what is best for their four-legged friends, so I suggest you start by talking to your veterinarian to put together a well-balanced eating plan for your pet,” Giedt said.

Proper nutrition essential for optimal pet health

Oklahoma is often recognized for being a leading state in wheat production, and Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Cen-ter is excited to promote and recognize this commodity by celebrating Bake and Take Month in March.

The purpose of the Bake and Take promotion is to encourage participants to bake a product made from wheat and take it to a neighbor, friend or relative, said Renée Albers-Nelson, FAPC mill-ing and baking specialist.

“The Bake and Take promotion is a wonderful way to get our young people to experience the joys of baking and understanding the importance of the cereal grain and wheat, grown in our state,” Nelson said.

FAPC, a part of OSU’s Divi-sion of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and Oklahoma Wheat Commission have worked with DASNR’s State 4-H program for the past several years in pro-moting Bake and Take Month.

“We direct our focus towards 4-H, since this group is strong in community service and ag-riculture,” Nelson said. “As we promote Bake and Take, we en-courage participants to purchase Oklahoma-milled flour.”

Four-H members across the state are encouraged to bake products made with wheat and use Made in Oklahoma Coalition products while completing the steps of service learning: prepa-ration, action, reflection and cel-ebration.

Mandy Gross, FAPC commu-nications services manager, said Bake and Take Month is not limited to just 4-H members; anyone can participate in the event.

“We would love to hear how people are celebrating Bake and Take Month and what Made in Oklahoma products are being used,” Gross said. “We are ask-ing individuals who participate in Bake and Take Month to take photos of the ‘baking’ and ‘taking’ process and send them to us to be posted on FAPC’s social media sites.”

Individuals can submit photos by emailing [email protected] and noting the Made in Okla-homa products used and where the baked goods were shared.

Today’s Verse...God’s promises stand

through the ages. He has ful-fi lled them in many different ways. He has punished evil nations, he has redeemed Israel according to his prom-ises, and he has sent Jesus as Savior and redeemer. But most importantly of all, Jesus stands at the edge of history waiting to return and bring full redemption for God’s people and salvation for those everywhere who long for his return.
