Restorative Practice Kamo Primary School is at the early stages of Restorative Practice, as we are just one term into it. To quote the Ministry of Education, “Restorative Practice is a relational approach to school life grounded in beliefs about equality, dignity, mana and the potential of all people. The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) Restorative Practice model focuses on building and maintaining positive, respectful relationships across the school community and offers school staff best-practice tools and techniques to restore relationships when things go wrong. By building and maintaining positive, respectful relationships within a school, staff to staff, staff to student and student to student, issues are more easily managed. PB4L Restorative Practice is based on a set of best practice tools and techniques to support a consistent and sustainable approach to managing positive, respectful relationships within the school.” We still have much to learn but I would like to share with you three definitions we are working with…

When someone does or says something that hurts you BUT they didn’t mean to… that's an accident

When someone does or says something that hurts you and they meant to… that's being unkind

When someone keeps on doing or saying things that hurt you ON PURPOSE even when you’ve asked them to stop…

that's bullying

Packaging in Lunchboxes – ‘Litter Less’ Lunches We are asking that you talk with your child when you pack lunchboxes and reinforce and remind them you want any containers they bring from home to come back home with them. I have noticed of late that many end up in our school rubbish bins. It would be great as well if you could teach them what is recyclable and what needs to go in the rubbish bin. It is very hard for teachers to check off every lunchbox every day. They are skimming and scanning to see that food is eaten but support from home would be great! The ultimate would be to have litter free lunchboxes and some parents comment to us they would like us to teach their children about this at school and we do try. However, it comes back to who is shopping and packing the lunchboxes and the school has no control over that. Yoghurt containers, chip wrappers, muesli bar wrappers, plastic sandwich bags and squeezies are all destined for the rubbish bins and ending up as landfill, or possibly in nearby waterways endangering marine life. If they are binned at home prior to leaving there is less chance they will be put somewhere they don’t belong or in any bin or place around the school. We would love your support as we strive to educate for change, but we definitely know home would be a great teacher on this! Important Strike Day On Wednesday 29th May school will not be open for teaching and learning instruction, as teachers will be striking. If you feel strongly about our cause you are welcome to join us. Details will be announced soon. No doubt you are aware from media releases that secondary teachers will join primary teachers for this strike at midday. The Kidzone After School Care programme has offered their services to parents on the 29th May. Please contact them should you require care for your child/ren.

Chocolate The wrapper is crunchy like some crisps. It is like a black balloon. It is melting in my mouth and on my tongue. It tastes like a piece of blackberry. The wrapper is crunchy like an apple. Isla Elliot Room 16

Chocolate The wrapper crunches in my hand. It sounds like paper ripping apart. It looks like a mine-craft brick. It sounds flappy in my ear. It melts on my wet tongue slowly. It’s crunchy in my mouth. Mason Leeuwenburg Room 16

Chocolate The wrapper makes a crunchy noise and when I ripped it open it crunched even louder. When I put it on my tongue it melts and gets wetter and it drips around my chin. Jai Silulu-Etherington Room 16
