Footy Day Next Monday we have our footy lunch. We will also make it footy dress day for a gold coin donation. These funds will be put towards supporting our World Vision child.

3 /4 Performance Classes are spending much time in practice as they gear up for the 2 big nights on Monday 29 th and Tuesday 30th August at the Rowville SC auditorium. This should be a great event.

Playground The rubber has been laid due to finally having some rain free days. It is just being given time to cure and we hope the equipment will be operational shortly.

Year 3 Tables We’ve had another big week on the times tables front with a number of our students performing brilliantly. 5’s in under 15 seconds were achieved by Keeley, Lauren, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Yara, Regan and Bradley in 3S, Annabelle and Sam in 3JC, Lachlan, Jaylen and John in 3 /4, and Leona and Sam in 3C.

We also commenced our 3’s and Caitlyn and Krispin in 3 /4, Kira, Allison, Josh, Tanner, Rylan and Ozcan in 3JC and Ethan in 3S were the “legends” in great times.

Woolies / Coles The voucher “fundraisers” from both companies are in full swing. We do have boxes in the foyer

for receipts and I note that many people have sent along some already, which is superb. This is a

great opportunity to tap into friends and family who may be happy to support our school. I believe

there is a Karoo box at the Stud Park Woolworths & there is double points this week in that chain

of stores.

Prep Rabbits Over past weeks the preps have had a mother rabbit and her babies in their classrooms. The students have enjoyed seeing the transformation from hairless, blind little things to rapidly growing cute creatures. We have them for next week as well.

Rebel There is a voucher available at the office that some people may like to take advantage of if you

were going to be shopping at Rebel this month. Offer valid until 31/08/11.

Molly On the weekend Molly in 6P had a very nasty bike accident at the BMX track which has resulted in her breaking both wrists, an elbow and sustaining facial injuries. This has required time in hospital and operations and could result in being in plaster for 6 months. Several parents have got together to organise a raffle to raise funds so that a self standing touch

screen can be purchased onto which can be downloaded books and music. Tickets are $1 each

and can be obtained from the Miss Poole’s Year 6 students. The prize has lots of goodies in it

including soaps, chocolates, lollies, golf balls, a yo-yo and skipping ropes. We will draw the raffle

on Monday 15th at assembly.

Principal’s Report continued..

School Council Elections School Council is a body of parents and staff representatives who meet regularly during the school year. The council operates within a legal framework of regulations and constituting orders.

Karoo School Council has ten parent representatives and five staff representatives, including the principal. A term of office is 2 years and each year half of the Council positions will be open for election. Karoo has five parent school council vacancies and three DET vacancies of 2 years, plus one 1 year vacancy due to a parent councillor moving overseas and not able to fulfil his term.

The process for Council elections will commence next week on Monday 9th February with nomination forms being available at the office. If nominations match vacancies then those people are duly elected. If nominations exceed positions then we go to a school election. Please note – all nomination forms are for general positions as school councillors. The forms must be signed by the nominator and the person nominated. School Council elects the office bearers.

Below is the School Council election time-line.

School Council Election Timeline

Monday 9th February: School Council – Call for Nominations

Monday 16th February: Nominations close at 4:00pm and assessed to determine if a ballot is required

Wednesday 18th February: List of candidates posted

Monday 23rd February: Ballot papers prepared and available at office

Tuesday 3rd March: Ballot closes at 4 p.m.

Thursday 5th March: Vote count and declaration of poll

School Council Meeting: Date to be determined

Car Parking around the School As our new parents may be unaware (and as a reminder to our existing families), the 2 minute parking zone is effective from 8:15-9:15am each school day in two places—on Karoo Road (near the school crossing) and on Murrindal Drive (near the crossing and at the childcare centre). These spaces are for drop offs only. Parents are asked to check the parking signs to ensure they are not infringing parking laws.

The staff car park, the milk bar car park and Kellbourne Childcare Centre’s car park are not to be used for school parking. We ask that you show courtesy to our neighbours and do not park across their driveways. There is always ample parking along Murrindal Drive, Karoo Road and on Kellbourne Drive (on the other side of the reserve), a short walk from school gates. Please use school crossings if parked on opposite side of the road.

Knox Council regularly monitors the area and issue fines.

Accident Insurance The Department of Education has requested that we remind parents that there is no individual student accident insurance coverage. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Should parents wish to acquire insurance it needs to be done privately. JUA Underwriting Agency are one facilitator of such cover and if interested more information is at www.studenthealth.com.au

Sports Equipment In order to assist students to have access to sports equipment, Mrs Lee with the assistance of our School and House Captains have set up a borrowing system for lunchtimes. The borrowing system will provide our student leaders with responsibility and a raised profile around the school, especially with their peers and the younger students. We have presented below the Sports Equipment Borrowing process.

STUDENT SPORT EQUIPMENT BORROWING

Students can borrow 1 or 2 items

Students need to line up, on the Multi Use stage if you are in Year 3-6 at the beginning of lunchtime and side door of the Multi

Use for Year 1 and 2

Students are to wait sensibly in line until it is their turn

No borrowing after 1:45pm

An ‘air horn’ sound will remind students to return equipment to the Sport Captains at the Multi Use building

Students who borrow the equipment must return it

Students need to show the Karoo values of respect and tolerance and have great manners when waiting in line and speaking to

the Sport Captains – who are there to help

The School Captains will follow up and ‘visit’ any students who have not returned equipment at the end of lunchtime

Visitors to the School A reminder that all visitors to the school must report to the school office to sign in before heading to the classrooms. In the event of an emergency everyone on the school premises (including visitors) must be accounted for.

Dogs A reminder that dogs are not permitted in the school grounds.

Wellbeing at Karoo …

CHILDREN LEARN BY WATCHING YOU. SPEAK TO CHILDREN AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE SPOKEN TO. BEHAVE AS YOU WOULD LIKE THEM TO BEHAVE.

Children are not born knowing what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. They learn by watching how you and others around them behave and how they and others are treated.

Children need limits. They need safe rules within which they can make choices, have responsibility and experience success. Limits must be clear and consistent! Inconsistency leaves children uncertain about what they can and cannot do. Set simple rules for everyone to follow and give reasons for these.

OFFICE NEWS…

Newsletter via Email This year we are once again offering to email newsletters out to families. If you received an emailed

version last year, you will continue to do so from next week, unless you notify us otherwise. Please make sure you let us know of any changes to your email address. Newsletters are uploaded to Tiqbiz and the Karoo website each Wednesday afternoon and are found under the ‘Newsletter’ tab on our website. Hard copies will still be made available to those who do not wish to receive it electronically. Email addresses will be kept confidential. If you wish to be added to the email list please fill out the attached tear off slip and return to the school office.

Asthma Action Plans Coming home shortly to students known to have asthma will be the new School Asthma Action Plan to be completed by parents. These plans must be completed each year to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on your child’s condition and medication. Please complete it and return it to the office as soon as possible so we may update our medical records. If your child has recently been diagnosed as an asthmatic and you have not completed an Asthma Action Plan, please notify the office.

Student Medications If your child needs to take medication whilst at school (eg antibiotics) please note a Medication Permission Form must be completed and signed by the parent prior to us administering the medication. Permission forms are available from the office and under the ‘Health & Wellbeing’—’Student Health’ tab on our website.

Birth Certificates and Immunisation Certificates It is a DET regulation that all students provide a copy of their Birth Certificate and Immunisation Certificates upon enrolment. Several of our students have not submitted copies of these. If this applies to your child, a note will be sent home shortly requesting this paperwork be supplied.

Excursion Payments Please take careful note of the dates that payments are due for excursions and incursions. Payments and forms will not be accepted after the due date written on the form.

Student Details Update It is extremely important that your contact details are kept up to date. Student Details Update letters will be sent home with each individual child over the coming weeks. Please make any alterations and return the form to the school. If your details have changed recently, please ensure you notify the office immediately.

Student absences If your child is absent, please supply a note to your teacher upon their return to school. These notes are required by the Department of Education to be archived for 7 years. Explaining the absence verbally to your teacher does not meet these requirements. It is not necessary to phone the school office on the day they are away, unless there is a specific medical condition that we need to be aware of.

Sick Bay Roster We are once again seeking volunteers to help with the sick bay washing. Each fortnight the two doona covers and pillow slips need to be washed and returned the following week, and with enough helpers you may only be required to do this once or twice a term. If you are able to help please contact the office.

Thank you, Office Staff

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

A warm welcome to our students and their families. We have had a very smooth start to the school year. We can credit this to our school’s Transition Program. Last year we welcomed our current preps to participate in a variety of school activities. We also supported and prepared our students across all other year levels to meet new friends and their 2015 class teacher. We appreciate the support from families too, the students were ready to work with books labelled and covered; there was great excitement on the first day of school.

This whole school community approach creates a safe, secure and supportive environment for your child to learn. Student Wellbeing is integral to teaching and learning. At Karoo we have programs to support students these include Positive Classroom Statements, Tribes, Lunchtime Clubs, eSmart, Getting to Know You meetings with parents and our Karoo School Values.

We encourage parents to communicate information about your child to the class teacher. Please make use of your child’s diary, phone the school to make an appointment or see the teacher personally when convenient for both parties. Further to this we have the services of a Department Guidance Officer (one day a week), a Social Worker (one day a week) and Robbie our School Wellbeing Officer who is at Karoo every Monday.

Karoo is fortunate to have the services of a Psychologist from onPhysch who works with students and their families on a as needs basis. To access this service please see Leanne Vines to obtain the relevant forms. This is a government funded program and requires a medical referral from your GP.

Please see me if you would like more information about our programs and services.

Leanne Vines Assistant Principal

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS NEWS Karoo District Swimming Team The District Swimming Competition takes place on Monday February 23rd at Oasis Swimming Pool,

Dandenong between 1:15 and 3:30pm. At the end of last year, many students indicated their interest in being part of the team. These students took home a form on which to record their 50m times for the stroke events they would like to be considered for. Students who turn 9-13 may compete in 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events. There are also freestyle and medley relay events. If you would like your child to be a part of the team please record their times for 50m on the form provided with this newsletter and return it to Mrs Lee by Monday February 9th. Please consider that your child must be able to competently and confidently swim 50m so that races are completed reasonably promptly and your child is not distressed when trying to complete their event. Students who have submitted their times to me will be given preference in the team. Students who are successful at District Level will be invited to the Division Swimming Competition. Parents are asked to transport their child to and from the pool and to stay at the pool for the duration of the competition.

Parent Coaches Needed for Year 6 Sporting Teams. Our Year 6 students are being arranged into teams for their winter interschool sport competition days. Training

will take place on Friday mornings between 9am and 10am. A teacher will be allocated to each of 4 sports, but we also require the expertise of any parents, or older siblings, who could assist us with coaching the netball and tee ball teams. If you are able to assist with coaching on a Friday morning and could attend the competition days in Term 2, please complete the assistance slip at the end of the newsletter and return it to the general office or Mrs Lee. Competition Days are May 22nd and June 19th. Training sessions will begin on February 13th. Please note that parents who assist will require a current Working With Children Check that has been sighted and recorded by Sue Baxter in the main office.

Karoo Parents’ Association

What does KPA do many of you might ask? Well I am here to tell you all the things that they have helped with, organized or had input into

in the last 12 months, and the list is surprisingly extensive.

The year began with helping to cover new books for the library and take home books. The preps needed new badges made (that were a little sturdier than the paper ones) by a group of willing helpers.

One of the KPA mums has taken over the Scholastic book orders and will co ordinate this in the future so that we can continue to offer this service to families.

Everywhere you looked on the Mother’s Day or Father’s Day stall you found a smiling KPA member helping out. They did everything from setting up tables and serving kids to packing up, and one member coordinated the whole Father’s Day stall. She did everything from ordering and sourcing items for sale to arranging the stall itself. With suggestions from other members it was decided to run the Father’s Day stall over 2 days allowing the children more time to select an appropriate gift. A display in the library window of the available gifts and prices prior to the stall allowed parents the chance to look, and maybe prompt children what to buy. Not that we can tell our children anything!!! Both these initiatives were warmly received by both staff and parents. The selling of leftover stock the next day was also great for a few people who forgot money on the day or really liked our gifts and wanted to purchase extras.

When KPA first started back up 3 years ago the idea of second hand uniforms being available was discussed. We tried a few options but none seemed to take off. So again this year the subject was discussed and a new approach of having an actual stall that parents could come to and purchase items was decided on. Again one of our loyal members took this under her control and has now managed to not once but twice, successfully run a second hand uniform sale. While the purpose of this venture was not to raise funds but more about giving families a chance to get uniforms at a cheaper price, we managed to raise in excess of $500 which goes back to the school to be able to give our kids the best possible equipment and resources. Great Job.

In the past we have held Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea with money raised going to Cancer Council. This year with the highl ighted subject of organ donation, KPA decided that Kidney Health Australia in association with the Zaidees Rainbow Foundation would be much more close to our school community. Again this was run by one of our valuable KPA members and what an amazing job she did. The shoelaces sold out before the week was out and the morning tea was enjoyed by many.

Teacher Appreciation day is now held in October every year and KPA started the initiative last year. Again this year it was taken onboard with a willing KPA member coordinating this event. This was no small job and it was handled with expertise and wonderful commitment. Every teacher in the school received a small booklet with comments from their class and the specialists received one with comments spanning the whole school. Along with these wonderful words from students, a small cupcake was presented to the teachers to say thank you for everything they do for our kids and for the school overall. The KPA members then baked, made and whipped up a delicious morning tea and lunch for all the staff to enjoy. Everyone involved said that it was a fantastic day and the teachers all felt very special.

The State election this year provided our school an opportunity to capture the attention of other members of our community not just the school parents, so a sausage sizzle and cake stall were arranged. The fundraising committee took control of the sausage sizzle but left the cake stall in the hands of KPA. Again one of our awesome KPA members took control and arranged everything from distribution of plates to manning of the stall all with the help of KPA. The school community really got behind this event and it was amazing to see the staff room tables full of yummy goodies and handmade treats. Obviously the community enjoyed this as by the time I walked up to vote and buy my goodies the cake stall had sold out. Great work by everyone.

The KPA are expert tea and coffee makers and can always be found in the staff room helping out with prep transitions, open night and anytime they are asked. This year due to the warmer weather and to capture the few parents who maybe didn’t feel comfortable coming to the staff room, an outdoor drink stand was put up in the court yard and refreshingly enjoyed by many. There were a number of prep transitions this year and everywhere you looked there was a friendly KPA member willingly lending a hand or giving friendly advice.

Many of you may not even know but there have been stairs installed in the brick wall outside Room 7. This allows the children to access their class room via these steps instead of having to jump down from the artificial turf. This all happened from a conversation had at a KPA meeting. Class Reps also came about because of conversations had at KPA meetings. KPA continually discusses how we can make it a bigger, better, more fun, and a more social group for you to be involved in.

So whilst we are just a group of parents who like to have a chat and maybe enjoy a good meal or two, we have contributed to the school in more ways than we could have imagined when we started this up again 3 years ago. To think this is how far we have come in 3 years makes me wonder how much further we can go in the next 3. So next time you see a notice that there is a KPA meeting don’t think oh just another boring meeting, come along and have a say in what you want to see happen in your school. You never know you just might have an amazing idea that nobody else is brave enough to suggest but could be the thing that makes Karoo Primary even more awesome than it is.

‘Make KPA part of your parenting journey’

Our first meeting for 2015 will be next Monday 9th February at 7:00pm in the staffroom.

All welcome !
