It was great to see so many parents and extended family at the assembly supporting our children and pinning on their badges as they took their leadership oath and wore their badges with pride. I’d like to thank Mrs Chatterton for organising the event and Mrs Domenici for being the official photographer. Congratulations again to our school leaders for 2019! eSAFETY ADVICE ON MOMO CHALLENGE This is recommended reading as there have been a couple of concerns shared by parents in the Picnic Point PS school community regarding the ‘Momo Challenge’. Even if you haven’t heard of it, your children may have. On the other hand, if they haven’t, there is no need to bring it to their attention. Scenarios like this reinforce the importance of attending our Digital Citizenship Presentation on Tuesday 19 th March where we can educate ourselves to educate our children. You can register here http://bit.do/picnicpoint The following statement was released on Friday from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner: It is very concerning when young people have been exposed to any content that scares them or plays on their emotions, like those reported via the Momo Challenge. Unfortunately, the Momo Challenge is not the first, nor will it be the last, harmful online “challenge” or phenomenon to target our children. Our research shows 81% of parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental engagement and oversight of a child’s online activities is critical from the start, to help ensure they are prepared for what they may encounter. As young people often do not have the maturity or judgement to cope with confronting content online, it’s important to guide and instil critical reasoning skills, so they are aware that not everything they see or receive online is real. We encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps they are using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable about anything they see online. Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful content online: Engage in your child’s online activities – ask what apps, sites and games they’re using and make sure they’re age-appropriate Use parental controls on devices to help limit what your child is exposed to Let them know not everything they see online is real or true.

Parents who are concerned their child may be susceptible to self-harm should be aware of the signs to look out for and know where to go for help – see more info here: https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-the-office/newsroom/blog/is-your-child-at-risk-of-self-harm-or-suicide Parents can visit www.esafety.gov.au/iparent for information and advice on keep your child safe online. VALUING OUR CHILDREN’S VOICE – TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY I am pleased to announce that this term, our students in Years 4-6 will again participate in a Department of Education’s initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 11th March and 12th April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. An ‘opt-out’ form has been emailed home today. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 15th March. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above. PEANUT ALLERGY REMINDER At Picnic Point, we endeavour to be a ‘nut friendly’ school due to a number of our students with allergies which could lead to very serious symptoms.

We ask that parents do not send peanut butter or nutella sandwiches with their child’s lunch, as even a remote contact through sharing books, toys, etc., could result in an anaphylactic reaction. EASTER SCRIPTURE

Combined scripture assembly this year will be on Friday 5th April. UPCOMING P&C ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – TUESDAY 12TH MARCH At the AGM on Tuesday 12th March at 7:00pm, all positions on the committee will be made vacant and we will be looking for enthusiastic parents to step into them. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community, be involved in something you’re passionate about and to build upon positive relationships with families, staff and students. We look forward to seeing you there. Ben Walsh Principal

Shared Language of Learning

This section focuses on the Shared Language of Learning that is used at PPPS. It is designed to enhance communication and understanding about learning and progress across the school community

BEE ZESTY

“When life gives you lemons make lemonade” Definition Being Zesty is the attitude and the level of enthusiasm with which we approach a task. It the quality that means we give our best. In particular being zesty allows students to internalise and personalise tasks, especially tasks that may not be their favourites. It allows students to see learning as an adventure rather than chore. Why Zesty? Research has shown that the attitude with which an individual approaches a task has a dramatic impact on their level of achievement and the overall outcome of the task. We have found that students who approach tasks and their learning with zesty attitudes have increased growth and results. Furthermore, students are able to connect with the learning, rather than seeing it as an abstract concept that they only do at school. This is the first step to our students becoming life long learners. Language of Learning Challenge Think of a task you don’t like to do or have been putting off and find a way to personalise it or make it an adventure. It might be building, creating or cleaning. Approach the task with a positive mindset and zest and see how it changes the way you feel about it and end product. Student Quote of the Week

“I think being Zesty is being creative and having fun” Kaila Horne 3 Carbon

PRINCIPAL’S AWARDS Congratulations to the following students who have received a Gold Principal’s award at assembly.

● Isabella Augustus

● Isla Pearson MORNING DROP OFF A huge thank you to all K-2 parents for adopting the kiss and drop routine in the mornings. We appreciate your cooperation in allowing your children to become independent individuals, by giving them the opportunity to walk to their classrooms and unpack their bags on their own. The sense of pride they feel and the smooth transition into the classrooms at 9:00am have seen a very settled group of students. We truly do thank you all for your support in this area. CLEAR COMMUNICATION FOLDERS Just a reminder that all clear communication folders must be brought to school every day. These are used for home readers, notes and finished work to go home to parents.

Band

UPCOMING EVENTS: Junior Band Assembly Performance Fri 15th March (W7) Band Committee Meeting Mon 13th May (T2 W3) Band Jam Fri 17th May (T2 W3) Engadine BandFest Mon 1st Jul (T2 W10) - TBC

Page 5: Kalori Newsletter - picnicpt-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦ · Our research shows 81% of parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental engagement

JUNIOR BAND ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE Wow! Mrs Stewart didn’t think the juniors would be ready this term, but now she informs me they are! Ready, keen and very excited about performing Hot Cross Buns and Rolling Along. We look forward to hearing them on Friday 15th (next week)! Please make sure your children bring their instruments and music on the day. BAND PRACTICE - MESSAGE FROM MRS STEWART Mrs Stewart asked at last week's band meeting if everyone could be mindful of the band as a group and make sure your child arrives for Monday morning practice on time. Students need to arrive at 7:45am so that they can unpack their instrument, arrange their seat, stand and sheets and be ready to start at 8:00am sharp! It is very disruptive when students are arriving after the band has taken their positions and started playing. Another crucial point is that you encourage your child to practise at home regularly. It's only when they start making progress and learn the pieces, that they begin to really enjoy being a member of the band. Allocating regular practice time and providing the space makes a difference to your child's willingness to practise. Listening to their playing, showing appreciation and acknowledging their progress, no matter how small, also goes a long way in their enthusiasm. If you have any questions regarding your child's band issues, please see Mrs Stewart before 8:00am or after 9:00am on Monday. Thank you for your continued support. MAILING LIST The above message was also emailed to all band families last week. If you did not receive it or other band notes, it may mean we don’t have your correct email address on the band mailing list. Please check with our office ladies to ensure you are informed of all events and issues. FACEBOOK BAND PAGE As an additional option, you may choose to join Facebook, as the band convenor or other committee members often post informal messages, reminders or requests for volunteer helpers, etc. Please contact the convenor, Maria Musumeci, for more details. DATES FOR YOUR CALENDAR Some of the above upcoming events are not till next term, but I have put them up for your diary and will keep repeating them for your convenience. More details and notes will be sent closer to the events.

Choir

SENIOR CHOIR Ms Collinet and Mrs Byrnes are thrilled to announce that our Senior Choir has 38 enthusiastic members who practise every Wednesday at eating time and the first half of lunch. The students show great learning qualities which reflects their self motivated independent learning skills and their determination to learn and perform all new songs to the best of their abilities. We ask our members to join our Google Classroom in the GSuite (accessible from their student portal) with the code of mb27nn3. In the Senior Choir Google Classroom, members have access to the songs we are singing so that they are able to practise at home and can read any information on upcoming performances or points to remember. Thank you to those who have already joined and it is great to read your comments.

Page 6: Kalori Newsletter - picnicpt-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦ · Our research shows 81% of parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental engagement

Could each choir member please bring a display type folder or a manila folder envelope to our choir practises so that new song lyrics can be collected and used by the students with as little time disturbance as possible.

Chess

CHESS ACADEMY AND CLUBS It’s great to see so many students joining our various chess opportunities and we particularly applaud some of the very young students, including girls, for being such brave and curious learners. They came to have a go and now they’re enjoying it so much! Our sessions are very well attended and the players are generally well behaved. A reminder that chess is in Mr Burdon’s room on Tuesday lunch and Mrs Stawski’s room on Thursday lunch.

JUNIOR CHESS LEAGUE COMPETITION It starts in Term 2, so we will be sending notes home and looking to form teams shortly. The competition involves weekly Friday afternoon games against other schools. The games usually alternate between ‘home’ and ‘away’ games and finish around 4.30 and 5.30 pm respectively. A team consists of 4 players and we enter each team in a grade as close to their level of skill as possible (championship, intermediate, rookies, junior rookies). The main constraint we have each year on the number of teams we can enter, is the number of available parent drivers. If your child is ‘into chess’, and you think you may be able to spare even one or two Friday afternoons, please consider this when replying to the note. (Notes will be sent home in the next week or so).
