Once again we’ve begun the school year swiftly with all 16 classes formed and settled-in, not to mention a very smooth transition to PPPS for our Kindergarten students and new Year 5 students in our Opportunity Class. Welcome to all our new families!

The United Nations has designated 2019 as the international year of the periodic table of chemical elements which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the table’s creation. So we have chosen the theme of ‘chemical elements’ for our class names. Parents, please be aware that although we try to maintain the classes as they are, sometimes, for any number of reasons, slight changes may need to be made. Our classes for 2019 are: Kindergarten Krypton Mrs Austin Kindergarten Gold Mrs Bowen & Mrs Plush Kindergarten/Year 1 Neon Mrs Hayes Year 1 Oxygen Mrs Clarke Year 1/2 Cobalt Mrs Pokorny Year 2 Quicksilver Miss Dawes Year 2 Magnesium Mr Burdon Year 3 Carbon Mr Bowen Year 3 Curium Mrs Collinet Year 3/4 Xenon Mrs Stawski Year 4 Argon Mrs Psomadelis & Mrs Mayorga 5/6 Titanium Mr Belgre 5/6 Platinum Mrs Hagan (Mrs Byrnes Term 1) 5/6 Alchemy Mr Narris 5/6 Silver Mrs Colusso & Mrs Allen 5/6 Promethium Mrs Perantuono Computer Mrs Chatterton Library Mrs Ashton Reading Recovery / LaST Mrs Carrett EALD / LaST Mrs Black Literacy/Numeracy/Visual Learning Mrs Domenici

WELCOME BACK MRS COLLINET & MRS DILONARDO We are very fortunate to have two experienced staff members return this year after relieving in higher duties in other schools and areas of the Department of Education. I’d like to welcome back Mrs Collinet who has been Relieving Assistant Principal at Belmore North PS for the past two years and Mrs Dilonardo who has been working across the Bankstown and Glenfield Networks training School Administration Managers and Principals in new Departmental processes and practices. Both Mrs Collinet and Mrs Dilonardo are bringing back a wealth of new experience to our school that will be of great benefit. WELCOME BBQ & P&C MEETING All families should have received an invitation to attend the 2019 Welcome BBQ, hosted by the P&C on Tuesday 12th February. This cost-free event is open to all families, so come along, enjoy a bite to eat and make new friends.

The BBQ starts at 4:45pm, with entertainment from our school band. We would like to warmly invite and encourage parents to join us at the first P&C meeting of the year, commencing on the same evening at 7:00pm in G Block. We look forward to having all community members join us. SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Wednesday 6th February we held our Annual Swimming Carnival at Birrong Leisure Centre where we were able to enjoy a safe day in the sun and it was a great success. Whether they were challenging themselves in a race or having fun in the water park, our students were lathered in sunscreen and thoroughly enjoying their day at the pool. The students’ behaviour was, as always, exemplary and I’d like to congratulate them on representing our school in such an outstanding fashion. I’d like to thank the many parents who were in attendance on the day for supporting our children and lending a helping hand. In addition, I’d like to thank our wonderful team of teachers who assisted with the smooth running of the day, with a special thank you going to Mrs Austin and Mr Belgre for their outstanding organisation. Well done to everyone for a great team effort! KIDS CAPERS OOSH ONSITE I am pleased to say that Kids Capers OOSH has started onsite smoothly in 2019 here at PPPS. While they are offering more places than have been available to our families before, they are now full. We are working closely with Kids Capers and the DoE Asset Management Directorate and are in the process of having the numbers in the licence increased. We are hoping that Kids Capers will be able to begin offering places to families on their waitlist by the end of this term. DISPELLING THE MYTHS OF COMPOSITE CLASSES This year at Picnic Point Public School we have formed a number of composite classes. When forming any class, and even more so with composite classes, our teachers look very closely at the learning styles and needs of the students grouped together in the composite class. It is important to note that all classes have students with a broad range of abilities, regardless of whether they are a composite class or straight grade class, and our experienced teachers here at Picnic Point PS are able to differentiate (individualise) the curriculum to meet the needs of their students. At Picnic Point PS, we do not group classes purely on academic ability or on social ability. Rather, as is best educational practice, we use a combination of both. What this means is that when placing your child in any class, we make sure that their individual educational needs are met, not only with their peer and social groupings, but also with their learning style and teacher professional competencies.

Below, an excerpt from the DoE policy relating to research states: Multi-age classes are made up of students drawn from different year levels. They may be established because of the uneven pattern of enrolment in the school, because of the small size of the school or where it’s considered that mixing students of different ages is academically and socially advantageous. These multi-age classes are often designed to match the organisation of the syllabus, which is based on ‘stages’ running over two years. Two findings stand out in the research: • It makes no difference to performance whether students are in a straight year group or in a multi-age class. The most important factors in determining how well a student does are the quality of the teacher and his or her teaching. • Multi-age classes may benefit students both socially and emotionally. SPORT IN SCHOOLS To complement curriculum implementation we have been utilising the expertise of external providers to deliver specialised in-school sporting programs in gymnastics and fundamental movement skills in Terms 2 & 3 respectively. This year, I am pleased to announce that we will be trialling a comprehensive Personal Development/Health/Physical Education (PDHPE) program delivered by Sport in Schools Australia (SiSA). SiSA have dedicated an expert team of accredited NSW Department of Education teachers to take every class for PDHPE, once per fortnight across Terms 1 - 4. These teachers are specialised in this area of the curriculum and will explicitly teach components of the PDHPE Curriculum to all our students through the following programs: • Gymnastics • Athletics (Track and Field) • Dance • Wellbeing & Social Skills • Fundamental Movement Skills • Major Sports (Teaching and developing the skills required in our PSSA Sports) This is a very exciting opportunity for all our students to explore a variety of physical and social activities and develop sports-specific skills. It will also give every student the opportunity to have exposure to, and develop skills in dance and PSSA-related sports. While it won’t guarantee entry into teams and performance groups, it will give all students the opportunity to experience the activities and help prepare them for tryouts and auditions. In previous years, families have been asked to pay for 2 terms of specialised programs. We have endeavoured to keep the costs the same even though students will receive more tuition time over the next 12 months. This organisation is on our Sentral Calendar so if you’re accessing our Parent Portal, you will instantly be able to see when your child has SiSA lessons. MRS ROSE ON LONG SERVICE LEAVE – CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW RELIEVING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MRS CHATTERTON Mrs Rose has decided to take long service leave for all of 2019. While we will all miss her experienced contributions, leadership, collegiality and friendship throughout the year, we wish her all the very best for 2019 and hope that she has an amazing time following her passions and spending time with family and friends. In Mrs Rose’s absence, I’d like to congratulate Mrs Chatterton on being our Relieving Assistant Principal on Stage 3 this year. Mrs Chatt has extensive leadership experience and has made a seamless transition into the role. She will continue to be a wonderful asset to our Stage 3 staff and students.

MEET THE TEACHER EVENING Our annual Meet the Teacher Evening will be held on Wednesday 20th February. This is a great opportunity to not only meet your child’s teacher, but to learn about the school routines and your child’s class routines for 2019. Information has been emailed to all families, so please put this date in your calendars as we’d love to see you all here. LEADERSHIP INDUCTION CEREMONY Save the date: Friday 1st March at 11:00am. Further details closer to the date. STUDENT SAFETY – MOBILE PHONE PROCEDURES Mobile phones have become an important and invaluable part of our modern lifestyle. At Picnic Point PS we recognise that many students and their families own a mobile phone. We also recognise that some parents/guardians request that their child bring a mobile phone to school for before and after school safety/security reasons. For the purpose of safe storage as well as minimising disruptions to learning, no phones are to be kept by students in pockets or school bags.

Please see our Mobile Phone Policy on our website, in the policy you will find the Mobile Phone Consent Form. This must be filled out and handed to the office before your child can start bringing their phone to school. Please remind your child that mobile phones must be handed in to the office upon arriving and picked up when leaving for home. PAYMENTS Soon, families will be given statements for school fees, textbooks and upcoming events. For your convenience and our office management, we request that all payments for all family members are made in one envelope. Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. ASSISTANCE The school understands that the beginning of the year is a time that can stretch finances. Remember that payments may be made in instalments, however, if further assistance is needed; please phone the school for a confidential meeting where we may be able to offer some assistance. UNIFORM DRESS CODE I must compliment our parents and students on the way uniform is worn at our school. At PPPS we are very fortunate to have a uniform that is both practical and looks great. When worn well, our uniform; defines our identity as a proud school; gives students a sense of belonging and promotes a positive perception of our school within our community. We thank our parents for your support in ensuring your children follow our school dress code. Please remember to mark all belongings clearly with your child’s name. In addition, don’t forget that the uniform shop is open Thursday mornings or parents are welcome to look through lost property in E Block. If something is unmarked, feel free to take it for your child. Many thanks in advance for your assistance and understanding in this matter. CYBERSAFETY WORKSHOPS The world of games & technology is fast becoming the centre of our children’s universe. It can be a challenging task for parents to stay on top of the dangers of technology, while monitoring their child’s online behaviour and finding balance. We are offering a workshop for parents on Tuesday 19th March. You will learn more about managing children’s technology use, including information about current trends in popular games and gaming behaviours, recommendations regarding screen time and strategies for implementing healthy game limits.

Page 5: Kalori Newsletter - picnicpt-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · February. This is a great opportunity to not only meet your child’s teacher, but to learn about the school routines and your

We will also cover information on setting boundaries around technology, online behaviour management, and tools for managing technology both in and outside of the home. This session will be facilitated by Yasmin London. Yasmin has been a specialist youth liaison with the NSW police for over 6 years of her service and was awarded runner up NSW Youth Officer of the year in 2015. With extensive experience in the legalities and dangers associated with the technology terrain, including topics such as cyber bullying and online predators, Yasmin regularly advises and consults to government, schools, parents and youth advocacy agencies on cyber safety education and management. If you’ve ever struggled with getting your kids off their games and into bed, worried about the content of the games that they are playing or felt concerned that your child was spending too much time in the digital world, this workshop is for you! Please register for this event by following the link provided. This is an important school event for all parents to attend. http://bit.do/picnicpoint INJURIES AT SCHOOL Unfortunately, there is no personal injury insurance cover provided by the Department of Education for students in relation to school sporting or any other activities.

Apart from Medicare and private health insurance parents and caregivers can access personal accident cover through normal retail insurance outlets. When deciding whether to take additional insurance cover it would be advisable to assess the level and extent of the child's involvement in sport programs at school, district, region and state level. Many years ago, there used to be insurance schemes which parents subscribed to through the school, but that is no longer the case. Ben Walsh Principal

Shared Language of Learning This section focuses on the Shared Language of Learning that is used at PPPS. It is designed to enhance communication and understanding about learning and progress across the school community

BEE COLLABORATIVE

“Collaboration takes place when two people work together as equals to assist each other to succeed”

Definition Collaboration is students coming together and sharing ideas, knowledge and skills to broaden their minds and ultimately produce something that is greater than what we can accomplish alone. Why Collaboration? Collaboration and the concept of sharing ideas is at the foundation of what learning is. Studies show that students who have effective collaborative relationships with their peers and their teachers are more successful learners. Collaborative learning allows students to broaden and grow beyond the limitations of an individual.

Language of Learning Challenge Have a discussion with your child about how they collaborate at school and share with them ways in which you collaborate to succeed in your life. Student Quote of the Week

Stage 2 Report UPCOMING EVENTS: Jellybeans Music starts Wed 13th Feb Sport In Schools starts Thu 14th Feb WELCOME TO STAGE 2! The teachers in Stage 2 would like to welcome our new students as well as returning ones. So far, our classes are looking and working well! Welcome also to parents, we look forward to meeting you if we haven’t done so yet, and working with you to support your child’s learning journey and wellbeing. We look forward to seeing you all at the Meet the Teacher evening in Week 4. WELCOME BBQ This is a very informal family event, kindly organised by our P&C each year. It is an opportunity to connect, chat and enjoy a friendly and welcoming atmosphere between parents, grandparents, teachers, students and siblings. We hope to see as many people there as possible to share a sausage sizzle, exchange the latest news and gossip, listen to our wonderful band and have lots of fun! MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT A separate note has been emailed to all families with an outline of this event. This is just a reminder that Stage 2 will start with a general presentation in the hall at 6:00pm, followed by individual classroom sessions at 6:30pm. Teachers will be outlining their program and expectations - this is not the time for discussing individual students. If you have questions or concerns about your child, please make an appointment through the office or with your classroom teacher. SPORT IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM Stage 2 will be participating in the whole school Sport In Schools program on Thursday afternoons of odd weeks, starting in Week 3 (W3, 5, 7, 9, 11). We ask that the students wear their sport uniforms every Thursday as most classes will be having PE sessions on the alternate Thursdays, to avoid confusion. Thank you for your support. JELLYBEANS MUSIC The Jellybeans music program for Stage 2 starts in Week 3. Sessions will be conducted every Wednesday. Please check that you have returned your permission note and payment before next Wednesday. Here is a message from the Jellybeans team: What Happens in Jellybeans Music class? Jellybeans Music provides a sequential, curriculum-based repertoire for students. Approx. 3-4 pieces are taught each fortnight throughout the term. As parents/guardians, you can see which pieces are currently being learned and performed in class by logging into the student area of

www.MyJellybeansMusic.com Our new website allows parents, students and class teachers to log in ANY time throughout the school year to view the class repertoire. Your entire school has a generic password, which is: pan 3 Carbon and 3 Curium: your password/username is pan3

EQUIPMENT Most students have returned to school with a fresh supply of stationery and equipment, which is great to see. One important item is a ruler - please ensure your child has one (no ‘bendy’ or metal rulers please). It is also very useful to have a second, shorter ruler (15cm) for underlining, as it is easier to handle. Parents, please check that clothing labels are still clear and it is important to label lunch boxes, so they can be returned promptly if left in the playground. Thank you for your support.

Stage 3 Report UPCOMING EVENTS: Narrabeen Camp Wed 13th - Fri 15th Feb

WELCOME BACK It’s been a very hot and humid start to the 2019 school year, but we are very fortunate to have air-conditioning in all areas of our school.

Stage 3 students have returned with a positive mindset and with a focus to learning goals and we look forward to a positive year.

NEW STUDENTS We have a number of new students in the stage and we are confident that they will soon feel “part of the furniture” and readily integrate into our fantastic school and activities.

BYOD Thank you to Mr Narris who spent time helping the students to set up all their devices. Don’t forget that you may only bring a device if you have signed the note regarding usage and returned it to your class teacher. Mr Narris is the fount of all knowledge when it comes to BYOD but we are sure that before long the students will be trouble shooting their own devices. NARRABEEN 3 DAY CAMP We are all eagerly looking forward to our camp next week. When we talk about it we see lots of excited faces and lots of nervous but brave faces. Many students will be pushing themselves way out of their comfort zone, including - leaving home for the first time time, making their own beds, finding (and losing and finding again) their own clothes, plus many excellent activities that they may never have tried before.

Please do not send any clothing that is precious; we will be climbing and running around and getting dirty. If you have lost the Needs Note there is a copy on the school’s website. Please note that they upgraded the cabins a few years ago to king single bunks. If you don’t have a king single sheet, a double flat sheet can be just tucked in. We will survive!!

If you need more information you can visit the camps website: https://sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/facilities/schools/parent

One of the nights we will be having a ‘Bright’ disco. Please do not go out and buy anything special for this event it is just a bit of fun and there is absolutely no pressure to dress up!

SWIMMING CARNIVAL (Mrs Chatt’s Pool Party) The whole senior team would like to commend the senior cohort that attended the Swimming Carnival. It was wonderful to see the House Captains and Vice Captains leading their houses with pride. From organising chants to getting the younger students to their races on time. They did a fantastic job! Can’t wait to see what they do at the Cross Country now!

Page 9: Kalori Newsletter - picnicpt-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · February. This is a great opportunity to not only meet your child’s teacher, but to learn about the school routines and your

LEADERSHIP TEAM We see all of our Year 6s as leaders and it has been wonderful to watch how this year’s group has embraced this. Mrs Chatt is being nagged for training from the sound monitors to the flag raisers. They are all proactive and thoroughly engaged in doing their best for our school community. The prefects did a wonderful job running last week’s first assembly and the House Captains and Vice Captains were amazing at the Swimming Carnival leading the chants, getting students to their races and organising the relay teams. We give them a huge thanks to a great start to the year!

Library

WELCOME BACK What a great first week in library. Many students remembered their library bags and most have borrowed some books for recreational reading. I would like to ask all parents to please read with/to their children at some time each week, even though they are all becoming great readers. Often comprehension levels are superior to reading ability and so it is important to take the stress of reading away to improve enjoyment of the story. It is important to ask your child “What are you reading?” Research shows that reading 20 minutes per day means we read 1.8 million words and improve vocabulary by 2,500 words per year! Students who read 20 minutes a day are in the 90th percentile in tests. Happy reading!

Band

UPCOMING EVENTS: Welcome BBQ Performance Tue 12th Feb Senior Band Assembly Performance Fri 22nd Feb AGM & Ordinary Committee Meeting Mon 25th Feb Band Jam Fri 17th May (Term 2) ANNUAL GENERAL AND ORDINARY MEETING We have at least 29 new band members this year, which is promising for our committee! We need more parents to be involved in any capacity, whether it be taking on a role or just assisting and attending meetings to help discuss issues and contribute ideas. We only meet once each term, always on a Monday evening, so that working parents can still be a part of our band community. Please come to our AGM, hear what these roles entail and you can decide how much or how little time you are able to give. Our meetings are held in G-block; the AGM starts at 6:30pm, followed by the ordinary meeting at 7:00pm.

WELCOME BBQ PERFORMANCE Due to the fact that there will be only 2 band sessions before the day, only the senior band will be performing at this event, starting at 4:45pm. A note has been sent home and we would appreciate a prompt reply to indicate whether your child will be attending. For students attending After School Care, parents please note you will need to sign a release permission on the return slip if you allow your child to attend the band performance. SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES Our school assembly is a great platform for the band to practise public performances and gain confidence in the safety and comfort of their environment. Usually, senior band performs in Week 4 of each term and junior band in Week 7, except for Term 1 when only the senior members perform. Please remember that our school assemblies are now on Fridays, so the students will need to be organised with their instruments, particularly if they are also in PSSA. BAND JAM Although Band Jam is not until Term 2, I am mentioning it so you can save the date. If you are a new family to Band, our Band Jam is an evening of impromptu performance opportunities. Students can join with a friend or few and jump on the stage for a duet, trio or any configuration; parents, grandparents or older siblings are welcome to accompany their musician as well. We have lots of fun on the night! More information later. Mark the date in your diary!

Chess

UPCOMING EVENTS: Sydney Chess Academy Starts Wed 13th Feb Chess Club Every Tue & Thur Junior Chess League Competition Term 2 CHESS ACADEMY Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Picnic Point Public School is held on Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 4:00pm, starting on 13th February 2019, in Mrs Stawski’s classroom. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can email [email protected] for more information about cost and enrolment. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170. SCHOOL CHESS CLUB Our lunch time chess clubs will start from next week (Week 3). They are held in Mr Burdon’s classroom on Tuesdays and Mrs Stawski’s Classroom on Thursdays and are open to boys and girls of any grade and ability.
