Kaiapoi High School is proud
of its academic record. A focus
on achievement has seen a
sustained, steady increase in
students attaining qualifi cations.
Kaiapoi High School’s results sit at,
or above, the national level.
Our extension programmes,
particularly scholarships, have
given students an exciting
opportunity to test themselves
at the highest level. Students
are encouraged to engage in the
experience and every assistance
is given to provide support and
encouragement. Our success rate
is above the national average.
EDUCATION FOR LIFEWe believe our young men
and women deserve the best
education possible. We encourage
students to build strong academic,
cultural and recreational interests,
and to become full and useful

Kaiapoi High School has clear
expectations for our school
community with respect to
conduct, presentation and
attitude. These are based on
the School’s core values of
Respect, Integrity, Community and
Excellence.
Kaiapoi High School has
incorporated Restorative Practice
into our philosophy, to deal
with issues that arise from non-
compliance and the breakdown of
positive relationships in teaching,
learning and social settings. This
enables a school-wide culture of
mutual respect, care and support
to prevail, even in the case of
wrongdoing and confl ict.
Kaiapoi High School endeavours
to meet the needs of all
individuals and Restorative
Practice allows all parties to
be fairly treated and positive
resolutions to be obtained.
Restorative Practice can include
the use of outside agencies,
alternative education facilities
and refl ection time in arriving at
a solution that best meets the
needs of the individual and school
community.

JUNIOR CURRICULUM
Kaiapoi High School has designed
a programme of study for
Years 9 and 10 which meets the
requirements of the National
Curriculum.
Year 9At Year 9 students study a
compulsory course of English,
Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies, Technologies, Health and
Physical Education, the Arts (Visual
Art, Drama, Dance and Music) and
either the option of languages
or a Skills programme. All Year 9
students are required to go on an
Outdoor Education camp as part
of their junior programme.
Year 10At Year 10 students study a
compulsory course of English,
Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies, Health and Physical
Education, and select from a
range of half-year and full-
year courses in Biotechnology,
Business Studies, Dance, Digital
Technologies, Drama, Electronics,
Food and Nutrition, Food
Technology, Graphics, Hard
Materials, Languages, Media
Studies, Music and Visual Art.

Year 11 / Level 1At Year 11 students have a
compulsory course of English
and/or ESOL, Mathematics and
Science. They select three other
subjects from an extensive range
of options: Business Studies,
Dance, Digital Technologies,
Drama, Electronics, Food and
Nutrition, Geography, Graphics,
Hard Materials Technology,
History, Hospitality and Catering,
Media Studies, Music, Outdoor
Education, Physical Education,
Skills for Living, Te Reo, Tools for
Work and Visual Art.
Year 12 / Level 2At Year 12 students select six
courses from: Accounting,
Art Design, Biology, Building,
Chemistry, Classics, Dance, Digital
Technologies, Drama, Economics,
Electronics, English and/or ESOL,
Food and Nutrition, Gateway,
Geography, Graphics, Hard
Materials Technology, History,

At Year 12 and 13 students have
the opportunity to participate
in work experience and tertiary
courses at Polytechnic and
University. Students also have the
opportunity to enrol in Gateway,
which is a pathway from school to
the world of work. Gateway is an
opportunity to combine school
and workplace learning.
During the year the school has
visits from tertiary institutions.
Students also have the
opportunity to visit a Career Expo
as part of their Career planning.
Year 12 and 13 students may study
a multi-level course, depending
on their needs. In special
circumstances, some students may
study correspondence subjects.

INTERNATIONAl students
InternationalKaiapoi High School warmly
welcomes applications for
enrolment from overseas students
and values its contact with
students from other cultures.
Kaiapoi is a town of 12,000
residents, 20 minutes by car
from Christchurch International
Airport. The town provides a safe
and clean environment and easy
access to city amenities.
Courses of study prepare students
for national qualifi cations,
including entrance for
New Zealand universities and
English language tests. Senior
class sizes are usually small and
students are encouraged to
achieve to their full potential. The
school welcomes students at all
year levels.
ESOLESOL or English support is
available where required. A fully
trained and very experienced
teacher plans a full ESOL
programme. Opportunity is
provided for motivated and able
students to sit IELTS, TOEFL and
TOEIC examinations.
Entry RequirementsEnglish language ability at
elementary level for Years 9 and
10, intermediate at Years 11 and 12,
advanced at Year 13.
HomestayThe school arranges homestays.
The Homestay Co-ordinator
supervises homestay
arrangements, deals with any
problems and gives assistance as
needed. Most students can walk
to school from their homestay.
Some students can travel by
school bus.
Code of PracticeKaiapoi High School is a signatory
to the Code of Practice for the
Pastoral Care of International
Students. Copies of the Code are
available on request from this
institution or from the NZ Ministry
of Education website, which is

Kaiapoi High School aims to assist
students to ‘Be the Best You Can
Be’, in whatever fi eld or interest
they pursue.
Students are encouraged to
become involved in a wide range
of co-curricular activities.
Kaiapoi High School was the fi rst
secondary school in New Zealand
to achieve full school wide
accreditation with the ‘Outdoors
Mark’, indicating quality of practice
and safety.
Kaiapoi High School has a proud
sports record at local and national
level. Our sport ‘Hall of Fame’
recognises students who achieve
at the highest level. Kaiapoi High
School’s Sports Co-ordinator
organises opportunities and
support for students in their
chosen sport. The school is part
of the Christchurch Secondary
Schools’ competition and has
annual sports exchanges with
Buller and Kaikoura and hosts
sports teams from schools in
Australia and the United Kingdom.

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOMKaiapoi High School has a
well-established Music, Drama
and Visual Arts programme.
Music provides options outside
the teaching programmes for
tuition in a range of instruments
(including voice). Rock bands and
small groups are provided with the
opportunity to perform and hone
their skills.
Visual Arts are developing
experiences for students with
gallery exhibitions and displays of
student work.
Drama is very popular as a
co-curricular option. Stage
challenge debuted successfully
in 2008 and is now running
bi-annually. The Secondary
Schools’ Shakespeare Festival has
also proven to be a successful
event for Kaiapoi High School
students, with students achieving
best actor, staging, and overall
design concepts awards, often
winning the National Shakespeare
Composition award.

Kaiapoi High School believes in
building and maintaining positive

Kaiapoi High School has a strong
student voice. Student leaders
include the positions of Head
Student (boy and girl), Deputy
Head Students, House Captains,
Junior House Captains and School
Council. Student committees
organise the School Formal, Year
Book, lunchtime activities and
activities to promote a clean, safe,
environmentally friendly campus.
The student body is divided into
four Houses, Kauri, Matai, Rimu
and Totara. Every student is in a
form class linked to a House. The
House system provides a base
for developing leadership, inter-
house competition and a positive
collegial school spirit.
Whanau form classes allow Maori
students to focus on traditional
aspects of culture and the values
of Whanaungatanga (kinship).

THE KAIAPOi WAY
Recognising that some students need extra extension and that others may benefi t from support in their learning,
the school provides wide-ranging learning support programmes. Enrichment programmes are provided for high-
achieving students within their subjects and in other areas of general interest. Particular individual needs can be
discussed with staff at the time of enrolment. Individual programmes will be developed where necessary.
