February 2017The board would like to welcome you all to 2017.  It has certainly been a busy start to the year!  We held the firstformal board meeting of the year on the 21st February. The key foci for the meeting were:Numeracy and LiteracyAnnual planBudget ReviewProperty ReportNumeracy and Literacy The board was provided with an overview of the 2016 National Standards for our school.  The results are verymuch in line with previous years.  The Board and leadership team discussed the information in great detail toensure that the Board was confident that the plans the leadership team have in place will help provide all ourchildren with the support they need to achieve their best. We have agreed to a series of initiatives for 2017 forreading, writing and maths, which we will share with you next month. The demographic of our school is changing over time and we are seeing an increase in students who haveEnglish as a second language.  As a school we have a fantastic ESOL support and learning structure.  This wasreviewed last year and the Board received a very positive report from the Ministry of Education. Acknowledgmentmust be given  to Trish Bathard and the whole team at MCS for making such a difference for our students.Annual Plan ReviewThe 2017 Annual Plan has been updated with goals that include the following:Improving our communications and involving the community in “fun days”Rolling out our Positive Behaviour for Learning programmeInvolvement in the Wellington East Cluster of Learning programmeA review of our Policies and Procedures Continuing to work with the Ministry of Education to develop our inclusion programme Rolling out Mathletics across years 2 – 6A commitment from the Board of Trustees to develop ourselves as individuals and as a governance boardThe School Charter has also been updated.  This will soon be available on the website for you to view. Each Board member has been allocated an area of responsibility to enable these initiatives to happen.  We willalso be adding our photos and areas of responsibility to the website next month.  It is really important to us thatyou understand who we are and feel able to raise any board related issues with us. If you have any issues withyour child’s learning please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s leadership team – John Taylor Smith,Karina McKiernan or Jane Hatley. Budget Review We are in a good financial position at the beginning of 2017.  We have successfully completed the 2015 Audit andbegin the 2016 Audit and beginning the 2016 Audit now. As a Board, we have been able to provide the schoolwith some additional provisions to help support Literacy, Mathematics, Kapa Haka and Technology.    We are onlyable to do this due to your support and the fantastic fundraising efforts of the FaCE  group (previously known as the  PTA). We have our annual Ethnic Food Fair this Friday, and I would like to thank everyone for their efforts, as it is you,our community, that  makes the event the success that it is.Property ReviewThe school has a 10-year property plan which is developed with the Ministry of Education.  You may have noticedthe hall and ESOL blocks of the school have received a fresh coat of paint over the holidays.  We will be makingupgrades to the senior block this year to enhance the space and, if possible, an upgrade to the toilets.  Thisrequires detailed planning to minimise impact to the operational running of the school.  We will provide an updateafter the next board meeting in March.PersonnelPat Holden, our Executive Officer, has decided to leave us at the end of term 1.  Pat has been a great support tothe Board over the years and especially to myself this past year. Pat will be greatly missed, and I wish Pat all thebest in the next chapter of her life.  As a part of this process, we will take the opportunity to review theadministration support in the school.Warm regards, Georgie MilesMCS Board of Trustees Chairperson
