How the Victorians 'invented' leisure time.

Victoria became queen at the age of 18. She would reign for more than 63 years.

During the Victorian Era, British society changed in lots of ways that continued to affect people's

lives well into the 20th Century. Before the Victorians, most people had very little leisure time. This changed with the introduction of maximum working hours, and of time off at

the weekends.

How the Victorians “invented” leisure time.Railway

In 1825, the first railway was built in the UK which was used for transporting minerals.

In 1830, the Liverpool and Manchester railway opened which was the first UK public train.

By 1970, Britain had about 13 500 miles of railroad.

How do you think this impacted on the leisure industry?

How the Victorians “invented” leisure time.Railway

With Britain being the world's first industrial power (producing much of the world's coal, iron, steel and textiles), the railway allowed people to travel to find

work in these industries. The railway also gave people the opportunity to

travel the country. With the new law which meant people didn't work from 2pm Saturday to Monday morning, many took the opportunity to travel for

days outs or a night away.Sea-side holidays became very popular.

How the Victorians “invented” leisure time.

During the Victorian period, and especially after around 1850, people had more leisure time than

ever before. Britain was prosperous so more people had well paid jobs that allowed them to take time

off work. Laws were introduced to limit the number of hours people were able to work to

prevent employers from taking advantage of their employees. Public holidays were also introduced. This meant that instead of leisure being only for

the rich, more and more people were able to enjoy time off.
