A warm welcome to Term 2. We hope you enjoyed Easter and the holiday break
with your families.
Looking at the Junior School calendar of events, this term promises to be an
exciting one. In addition to our school program, we have many community
functions; the Womens’ Breakfast, PLC Open Day and Fair, Hamilton Athletics
Carnival, Photo Day and NAIDOC celebrations.
If we remember our strengths, persevere, use positive self-talk and participate in
activities – we can live positively. Peer Support Australia
As part of the school’s commitment to create a happy and safe community for
everyone, all Year 6 leaders were involved in a training day to prepare them for
their role as Peer Leaders.
The Peer Support Program is designed to provide students with a supportive
environment in which to develop the skills, relationships, attitudes and strategies
to make healthy life decisions. It is a peer led, skills based, experiential learning
program. The Year 6 leaders will work in pairs with small groups of students from
Years 1–5.
The module for 2017 titled, Living Positively focuses on providing a framework
for our students to learn about optimism with an emphasis on skills, including
positive self-talk and resilience. Through participation in the program we hope
the students will learn to approach life with a positive attitude, use their
strengths, engage in enjoyable activities and show gratitude to others.
Key skills include:
Resilience
Coping strategies
Critical thinking
Planning and working towards their goals.
Our best wishes to you for a positive and very happy Term 2!
Kind regards
Deryn Smyth Melissa Watters

JSA Easter Morning Tea
Congratulations to Ms Emily Hobson who was married on the first Saturday of the holidays. Our love and best wishes to Emily and her husband Rob.
A warm welcome to Mrs Samantha Rogut who joins the PLC Junior School Staff this
term. Mrs Rogut is looking forward to working with the staff and students, and
meeting families in her role as the Junior School Teacher Librarian.
We welcome back Mrs Roxanne Antonio from Maternity Leave. Mrs Antonio will
take KA for the remainder of the year.
We are delighted to share some baby news.
Congratulations to Ms Jane Edgecombe on the birth of her beautiful daughter
Vivian, and to Ms Victoria Johnson on the safe arrival of her baby girl. Last week,
Mrs Alison Lloyd welcomed a son, Maverick.
We are excited for Mrs Yvette Gillman and her husband Lucas who are expecting
their first child later in the year.
Thank you to the Kindergarten and Year 3 parents, along with JSA committee members, for their organisation of the Easter Bun and Popper recess. The girls enjoyed the morning immensely.
A copy of the Term 2 Co-curricular Timetable has been emailed to families in
conjunction with this Newsletter. Any questions regarding activities should be
directed to Ms Virginia Shearer, Assistant to the Head of Junior School and
Co-curricular Coordinator.
Parent/Teacher interviews took place at the end of Term 1. We trust you found the
interviews were an opportunity to discuss your daughter’s progress at school and
help her to establish goals for Term 2. We encourage you to urge your daughter
to be her own person and not compare herself to others. You can assist us to
develop a learning culture that recognises effort and persistence, and ensures her
success is authentic and satisfying.
On Saturday 13 May, PLC will hold its Open Day and Fair. This is a wonderful day in
the school calendar for the whole community and an opportunity to showcase PLC.
Attendance by Junior School students is compulsory and girls should wear their
summer school uniform, including Panama hat, on the day. A roll call for each class
will be taken at 11.00 am. If your daughter is unable to attend due to extenuating
circumstances, a letter of explanation should be written to Mrs Smyth prior to
Open Day.
The Term 2 sale, in time for the winter uniform and sport items, will be on
Wednesday 3 May from 7.30 am - 9.30 am. Any items should be dropped off by
noon, Tuesday 2 May. Further details can be found in Connections.
There is also a sale on Open Day from 11.30 am -1.00 pm, however, we will not be
accepting items for the sale after 2 May.
ANZAC DAY
The JSA are seeking volunteers for the PLC Open Day and Fair. Volunteers are
required to spend a few hours of their time assisting either on the day or before.
Open Day is always such a special day, filled with so much excitement. Please click
on the link to sign up:

Winter uniforms are to be worn from Monday 15 May i.e. Monday after Open Day. A
reminder, blazers are compulsory with winter uniform. All badges need to be worn
appropriately, hair should be tied back with a black scrunchie or black/black watch
tartan ribbon. Girls must wear either long green socks or black tights. No jewellery,
other than a plain watch or PLC watch, should be worn. Earrings must be small,
silver/gold studs or sleepers only please.
Girls in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy
and Numeracy) on Tuesday 9 May, Wednesday 10 May, Thursday 11 May. In all,
there are 4 papers undertaken over 3 days, Language Conventions (spelling,
grammar and punctuation), Writing, Reading and Numeracy. NAPLAN does provide
some useful, diagnostic information that, in conjunction with the students’
continuous assessments undertaken in the school during the year, provides an
overall view of progress in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy.
On Tuesday 25 April, the Junior School Captain, Raehana Taoube and Vice–Captain,
Eujiny Cho represented the College at the Burwood ANZAC Memorial Dawn
Service. The girls were wonderful ambassadors and took part in the wreath laying
ceremony. Junior School members of the PLC Sydney Pipes and Drums Band
marched in the ANZAC Parade in the city. In class, students acknowledged the
contribution of the Australian and New Zealand forces on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
Years 5 and 6 students and their parents are invited to participate in the Salvation
Army Red Shield Appeal on Sunday 28 May. It is a wonderful day when the girls,
along with parent supporters, give service to the community by collecting money
for this very worthwhile charity. PLC Junior School is the only Burwood area
primary school which has been involved over the past 13 years. Information will be
given to the Years 5 and 6 students about the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.
Students have access to the Café in the library before and after school if accompanied by an adult. Students with before school sporting commitments can access the café for breakfast.
Students have access to the cafeteria in the afternoon if they have an afterschool activity or they are accompanied by an adult.
Students K to 6 can order lunch through the cafeteria on a daily basis either on-line or through the ‘paper bag’ system. This operates with cash or a student card. Lunch orders are collected each morning and delivered to the cafeteria. The Catercare staff deliver the lunches to Evandale and Hamilton for distribution.
There is an Evandale menu and a Hamilton menu outlining the lunch options. The Hamilton menu includes hot specials.
In the past, Catercare have responded to the Junior School SRC requests and added a variety of vegetarian options to the menu.
