STRIDER NEWS Stowmarket Striders Running Club Newsletter Winter 2015
Golden Mile Junior Winners
The second Stowmarket Striders Golden Mile took place on Saturday 5th September. The race was a sell out with 250
places snapped up and an incredible 25 Juniors took part. Conditions were near perfect with the temperature a cool 15
degrees with a light wind.
Our accurately measured route takes the runners through the Town Centre and finishes on the Recreation Ground as the
Town's annual "Beach Party" starts.
Our unique event included runners aged from 3 to 69 years and is truly a race for all abilities. Many families run together,
others are targeting a fast time over an iconic race distance. This year we included prize money for our course records
being broken and had trophies for junior runners in the U11, U13 & U15 categories as well as the top three male and fe-
male runners.
Congratulations to our Junior Striders, Josephine Beer who won the U11 girls age category with a fabulous time of 7:25
and Jake Hayward who won the U11 boys with a time of 6:44. A huge well done to all our Juniors who entered the race we
know that many of you had been training extra hard over the summer.

New Year New Clubhouse
The Committee are delighted to announce that from the 1st January 2016 Stowmarket Striders will have a new ‘Clubhouse’.
All training sessions from 1st January will meet in the bar area behind the reception in the Mid-Suffolk Leisure Centre on
Tuesday and Thursday nights.
This will apply to the juniors sessions at 6.00pm, and both senior sessions at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
Striders will have exclusive access to this room from 5.30pm Tuesdays and 6.00pm Thursdays until 8.00pm on both eve-
nings. The leisure centre have plans to add a partition wall in early January to enable a corridor leading to the crèche area,
after these works have been carried out we have permission to erect notice boards and move our display case in due
course into the newly created area. There is also the possibility of extending or booking the room use at other times, should
we wish to have a social or formal meeting.
The committee feels that this is an enormous step forward in uniting our club in one area, providing a safe and spacious
area to gather before sessions. We will be able to display our club awards, achievements and news on notice boards for all
to share. We are also working on securing some on-site storage space that may facilitate our own mobile lighting and
coaching equipment in the near future.
As part of our new Clubhouse arrangement, all members that regularly attend Club training nights will need an Everyone
Active card. There is no charge for this card, this will simply allow you to access the Leisure Centre turnstiles during club
sessions. Members who already have an Everyone Active membership card will not need a new one, your current card will
be activated for access during these times if you currently have restrictions.
What do you need to do?
If you haven’t already please let us know if you already have an Everyone Active card or not. If you have an Everyone Active
card then we will arrange for it to be highlighted for Stowmarket Strider use. If you don’t have an Everyone Active card and
regularly attend Stowmarket Striders training session then indicate below and we will then arrange for a card to be issued to
you. If you don't attend training sessions and therefore don't need a card, please let us know so we don't chase you any
further. Thank you

Strider Angels to the Rescue
Our super-star Juniors are going from strength to strength this year. Since September we’ve seen record attendance at both
training and races (including the fantastically supported XC at Framlingham) and they show no sign of stopping even as the eve-
nings are getting colder! With such great attendance we’ve needed helping hands and that is where our Strider Angels have
stepped in!
Angela Brinkley, Louise Goddard, Martin Little, Megan Smart, Becky Jack and Steve Pretty have literally saved the day by help-
ing us at a number of training sessions this term - and we are very grateful! Thank you all for being absolutely brilliant and run-
ning with us on a Tuesday evening. We seriously couldn’t have run our sessions without you and are so very appreciative for
your continued support.
Our junior sessions are loads of fun and our youngest Striders work incredibly hard each week. Well done each and every one
of you – keep up the good work, we are very proud of you all.
Sue, Chris, Olly, Steve, Gemma and Helen
Juniors Awards Presentations 2015
The last Junior Strider session of the year was devoted to a Christmas party and awards night to celebrate the achievements of our
Junior members at a festive celebration. After games and a fun dinner at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre, Stowmarket, the coaches handed
out certificates and awards to the children who had achieved certain time standards for 800m and one mile distances.
But the big winners of the night were Harry Tilbrook (14) and Josephine Beer (9) who won the new perpetual awards - the Phil Rampley
shield and the Charlotte Cobbold cup. Runners-up certificates were also awarded to Jake Hayward and Isabella Porch.
Phil Rampley was on hand to give the award to Harry, who was praised for his enthusiasm and dedication to running. The Charlotte
Cobbold cup was awarded by coach Sue Garrod in memory of a young Strider who died tragically last year, and Josephine was chosen
as the first recipient for her improvement in running times and the number of races she has represented Striders in.
What the Junior Coaches say about Harry: ‘ Harry had been a member since he was 9 he is now 14, his
enthusiasm had never diminished, he loves to run and can’t get
enough of it. Always keen to do more running/distance /effort than
is asked, he loves to run at the front of the pack. He is a pleasure
to coach and he has the potential to succeed as he moves for-
ward. A lovely boy. ‘
What the Junior Coaches say about Josephine: ‘ Josephine has worked so hard at juniors always pushing herself and
showing great focus. She races at the Park runs each week and her
progress is amazing, she is only 9 year of age. Josephine has represented
our club at many races this year and has won her age category on many
occasions. Such dedication for one so young. She also has a gorgeous
smile.’
Runner-Up Certificate was awarded to
Jake Hayward. What the Junior Coach-
es say about Jake : ‘Jake has worked so
hard and is focused on his training,
showing great improvement, with the
result of winning his age group at the
Stowmarket Golden Mile—Keep up the
great work Jake’
Runner-Up Certificate was awarded to
Isabella Porch. What the Junior Coaches
