SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA (1713-1784)

July 1, 2020 No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether different but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preaching, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrating the sacraments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irrigation systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retrospectively critical eye of history. But when John Paul II beatified him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to advance their true human development. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. SUMMER BAPTISM SCHEDULE

Parents may register their child for baptism at the Parish Office.

Funeral Masses Will resume beginning Monday, June 29th.

25% of Church Capacity is permitted at the Mass keeping in mind Social Distancing.

Page 5: JUNE 28, 2020 — THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME … · 6/28/2020  · Sunday, July 5 8:30a Matthew Franz 9:00a Lorraine Radice 8:00a Brendan Culleton ST. EDMUND 11:30a Jane &

Dear Parishioners

We will begin the public celebration of Mass on June 29, 2020. We are still under NYS rules and guidelines in order to resume Masses. Part of this process requires the parish to submit a written plan for the public gathering of people. Many of the details would not be of interest to parishioners, but it does

place a burden on the parish to remain in compliance. Therefore, I have made the decision to change the Mass Schedule and I will continue to adjust the schedule as we move through this time. I ask for you patience and understanding of what may seem to be confusing.

Social Distancing and Holy Communion: Seating will be in every other pew at 25% capacity. In each pew, people are asked to sit 6 feet apart. A household does not need to sit 6 feet apart. If a family occupies a pew and the next seat is not 6 feet from the family, you should go to another pew. Face masks are to be worn at all times inside the church. Communion will be given at each Mass. You must approach the priest or deacon wearing your face mask and remaining 6 feet apart on the Communion line. Receive Holy Communion in your hand, and then step aside, remove your face mask, consume Holy Communion, place your face mask back on, and move to your seat. The priest and deacon will sanitize their hands before Mass and before and after distributing Holy Communion. The priest and deacon will also wear a face mask while distributing Holy Communion. Also the sacred vessels on the altar will be covered during the consecration and only uncovered for the distribution of Holy Communion. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Altar Servers are not permitted to serve Mass at this time. Lectors may serve Mass, and will read from a separate podium than the Pulpit. The parish will continue to sanitize the buildings and people are reminded to bring your own hand sanitizer and masks. There will be no procession or recessional, and the priest and deacon will not greet the people before or after the Mass. When Mass has finished, you are to leave the church and not gather outside. Each Church has a seating capacity that we cannot go over. People may enter the church through the main doors only and when we are at capacity, no more people will be allowed into the church. This may be a an issue for last minute arrivals.

Temporary Mass Schedule:

Weekday Masses (Monday through Saturday) will be offered at 8:30am in St. Thomas More Church only.

S u n d a y M a s s e s ( S a t u r d a y N i g h t a n d S u n d a y ) w i l l b e o f f e r e d a t : St. Thomas More: Saturday 5pm, Sunday 8:30am and 11:30am (Capacity 100) St. Genevieve: Saturday 4pm, Sunday 9am and 12noon (Church Capacity 30) OR (Fr. Hession Hall Capacity 77) St. Edmund: Sunday 8:00am and 10:00am (Capacity 75)

The obligation for Sunday Mass remains dispensed, so that people who are feeling sick, can stay home. If you are not feeling well, please, please, stay home and participate through the Live Feed Mass (Monday-Saturday 8:30am, Sunday 11:30am).

Weekly Offering: We continue to ask parishioners to donate online if possible. There will be a collection basket in the main aisle of the church for parishioners to drop off their Weekly Envelopes as you enter Church. There will be no collection taken during the Mass. The period of closure for our parish has created a tremendous deficit. We are urgently in need of donations in order to return to normal operations when permitted.

Deck Masses and Outdoor Masses: As I write this, no priest assigned to the parish or visiting is permitted to offer any additional Masses in the confines of this parish. As you know, I have the joy of approving and regulating all sacramental celebrations in our canonical boundaries. These Masses have not been approved in our plan to New York State and the Diocese since there is no way to regulate these Masses. If Masses are to be held in spite of our plan, the parish may be shut down eliminating the public celebration of Mass at all three churches. I know this sounds harsh, but the reality is we have to be accountable and in compliance. We are not exempt from oversight and inspection by New York State, even if we are isolated from the main part of the city. In fact, it makes us exposed for compliance checks.

Resuming the celebration of Public Masses is a step by step process. We need to take it slow and without incident in order to get us to the ultimate goal of full resumption of services. Whether we agree or not agree with this plan, has no merit and is not subject for conversation. But I do promise you that I will constantly update the plan and try and get us back to “normal” as fast as possible with the safety of parishioners as our priority.

Have a great week. –Father Gelfant

Dear Parishioners: ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

We are off to a great start with almost 79% of our goal pledged. I am asking all families to please help me and your parish meet our goal. Participation is the key to our success. I would love the opportunity to speak to each of you at the end of all of the Masses and schmooze you with my eloquent words as to the great importance of the Annual Catholic Appeal...but God and the Governor are sparing you this year. Therefore I resort to appealing to you through the weekly bulletin. As mentioned...it is all about participation. Please participate by using the form below or by going online and marking your pledge for our parish #3230. Thank you for your continued generosity to the Church...it is not going unnoticed. -Father Gelfant
