The President’s Message

Compatriots, with the end of the meeting on June 2nd we have come to the close of our 2017-2018 term. I know everyone is looking forward to the summer as a time of vacations and recreational activities.

Although we do not meet again until October 6th, there are several activities that should remind us of our patriot heritage during the summer months. First, Father’s Day is almost upon us. What better way to honor our patriot past than by signing up our sons, grandsons and in some cases, great-grandsons for membership in the SAR. If you have not done so, please consider it as a legacy gift to our next generations. Our mission is to perpetuate knowledge of American history and promote patriotism. I feel a duty to ensure that my own family has an awareness of the toils and sacrifices of so many in creating this democratic republic which has endowed us with the blessings of Liberty. If you have not signed up your male heirs, Registrar John Moore will be glad to help!

Another reminder of our patriot heritage during the warm summer and early Fall months are the number of battles fought during the warmer “campaign seasons.” Some of our worst defeats occurred during this time frame, such as the fall of Charleston, the battle of Camden and the earlier defeat of Washington’s army at Germantown. Conversely, we can recall some of

the brilliant victories our young nation produced during the warm months such as King’s Mountain, Saratoga, and of course, the calamity for the British at Yorktown. If you like to visit battlefields, as I do, there are many sites up and down the East Coast which make for nice visits and good memories.

In terms of supporting our local chapter, one point of emphasis I would like to make is to encourage all chapter members, and their spouses, to simply attend meetings. For years now, we have had an excellent program of presentations, and our program manager, 1st VP Bob Beightol, is working up new presentations which will continue the high standards we have kept. Our presentations have covered interesting and diverse subjects such as the holocaust (from a survivor), the nature of Islam, security threats to the US (by a retired major general), the space program, and many history topics on the Revolution and US Civil War. If you missed the June 2nd meeting, you missed another fascinating program. This program was presented by Roger Smith, a fellow compatriot, who earned a PhD in history from the University of Florida. His topic was “Florida the 14th Colony,” and he treated us to many fascinating and little-known facts about Florida’s role as a British colony during the Revolution. Dr Smith is an accomplished researcher writer and speaker who has given a presentation to the National Society of the SAR. Please look for our topics in emailed meeting announcements and in the chapter newsletter and come on out and enjoy a free lecture and delicious barbecue lunch provided by our hosts at the American Legion.

We have several key events coming up after we resume meeting on October 6th. We will give our first Law Enforcement Officer Award to a local deserving member of the “thin blue line.” At our meeting on November 3rd, we will have a special event honoring the 30th anniversary of our chapter and the planting of a “Liberty Tree” on the property of our host American Legion facility. We will have a number of guest speakers at this event, including the president of the Florida Society of the SAR. In December, we will have a special ceremony honoring Vietnam era veteran.

We want as many of our Vietnam veterans to attend and be recognized as possible. This ceremony is the product of much hard work by our veteran’s coordinator, Jim Carl. Please come out and support our efforts at our monthly meetings.

In closing this month’s message, I would like to include a little information about one of my favorite Revolutionary War flags. It is the flag carried by a composite Virginia regiment at the Battle of the Waxhaws on May 29, 1780 at the area known as the Waxhaws, SC. This small battle resulted in the destruction of the Virginia regiment by Banastre Tarleton’s British Legion, and most of the American soldiers were slaughtered by the British even as they tried to surrender. The cry “Tarleton’s Quarter” became a rallying cry for the patriot cause heard time and again afterwards at King’s Mountain, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse all the way to Yorktown. Their regimental flag was captured by Tarleton and remained in his family until 2006. Since there are so few surviving American flags from the Revolution, this flag sold at auction for millions of dollars. It has been reproduced, and I was able to add one to my collection.

Please note the motto: “perseverando,” or simply, persevering. What a great example of the American character—we may go down, but we rise to fight again—We persevere and never say die!

President Lane also reported that Compatriot Michael Dick, who has been ailing and unable to attend meetings, has accepted the duty as Chapter Auditor. Many thanks to Compatriot Dick and we hope to see him soon at future meetings. President Lane announced the formation of a planning committee for the Liberty Tree Dedication and 30th Anniversary celebration of our Chapter’s formation. Compatriot Ronald Grove volunteered to Chair the Committee with members as follows: Jerry Hardwich, Robert Beightol, Richard Offutt, Jim Carl, George Chaffee and Allan Lane. A committee meeting has tentatively been planned for July 25, 2018. President Lane also reported that a Veteran Identification Card is available to obtain the military discounts available from certain vendors. The Veteran’s Identification card can be obtained at the following web site: https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/43442/va-announces-rollout-application-process-new-veterans-id-card/ .

Secretary:

Chapter Secretary Ed Riley reminded members and guests to sign in as they enter the meeting, visitors on the left and guests on the right side of the sheet. Please Print!

Treasurer:

Chapter Treasurer Ron Grove reported that as the end of our fiscal year, approached on June 30th, our finances are in good shape. We will end the year adding about $300 to our

treasury. We had over $800 in donations, brought in over $150 from 50/50’s and still have $445.96 in the Diane Hardwich Memorial Fund. We have spent over $700 in awards and $1,049 for our youth programs. Our Rumbaugh Oration winner placed second in the state and our American History Teacher placed first in the state. Last fall the FLSSAR Endowment Trust Fund (ETF) Reimbursement program was discovered. FLSSAR has designated funds for reimbursement to chapters toward expenses for medals, certificates and scholarships to non-SAR members. The ETF could be the source for as much as $1,750.00. With that in mind, our executive committee has expanded our programs for the coming year. We trust our members will continue this wonderful support

with their dues, donations and 50/50 participation.

Editor’s Note: As usual, the qualifying expenses and application process are complicated; however, as Compatriot Grove is the newly appointed Chairman of the FLSSAR ETF committee, I think the Chapter will receive every penny of ETF funds we are authorized. Thank you, Compatriot Grove and congratulations on your appointment. For those members who are curious about what expenses are eligible for reimbursement, Compatriot Grove provided a list which is attached at the end of the newsletter.

Education Committee:

Committee Chairman Ron Grove reported that he recently attended the FLSSAR Board of Management (BOM) at which the FLSSAR winners of their Poster and History Teacher of the Year Contests were honored. As we know, our Poster Contest winner, Charlotte Sandoval, 5th Grader at Grovetown Middle School, Lake-Sumter Chapter winner, also won the FLSSAR phase of the contest. At the BOM,

Registrar: Registrar John Moore reported that Compatriot Terry Oldham would be inducted today. Further that Ray McCleary had singed his application today and it would be forwarded to NSSAR for action. Two additional applications are presently at NSSAR pending approval. Eagle Scout, JROTC Committee:

Committee Chairman Bill Hayes reported that JROTC Cadet Nicholas Dunaway, who was awarded the SAR JROTC Bronze Medal on May 5, 2018, has submitted his application for Eagle Scout status. If

successful, he will be the second JROTC Cadet to be awarded the SAR Bronze JROTC and continue to obtain Eagle Scout Status this year. The first being, JROTC Cadet Daniel Gantz, Eustis High School. In addition, Compatriot Hayes provided information concerning the NSSAR Arthur M. and Berdena King Eagle Scout Contest. The contest is opened to any Eagle Scout who is registered in an active unit who has not reached their 19th birthday during the calendar year of the application. There is no requirement for the

Eagle Scout to be a member of the SAR or even eligible for membership. The application consists of: (1) A two-page application form; (2) a Four Generation ancestor chart; and (3), a 500-word Patriotic Theme essay. Rewards for his success are: at the Chapter level, an SAR Eagle Contest Patch and a cash award; at the State level, SAR Eagle Scout Contest Trophy with cash awards of First Place, $1000.00; Runner Up, $500.00 and 2nd Runner Up - $250.00. We’ve never had a candidate from our Chapter, perhaps it is time we do! For additional information regarding the contest use the link: http://www.sar.org/education/youth-contests-awards/arthur-m-berdena-king-eagle-scout-award .

Parade Coordinator: Compatriot George Chaffee reported that the application for the Chapter appearance in the Tavares 4th of July Parade has been submitted and now it is a matter of waiting for a response. As in past years, a golf cart will be provided by Compatriot Glenn Langston for those who desire to walk. Compatriot Langston has possession of the decorations for the cart and the walking banner which identifies the Chapter contingent.

Volunteers will be needed to decorate the cart and perhaps transport the cart to the parade start point. Compatriot Chaffee will provide more information as it becomes available.

Presentation: “The Fourteenth Colony”

Dr. Roget Smith, PhD, was our presenter this month who spoke on “The Fourteenth Colony”. During the speech which followed, the members were reminded that with the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years War, Great Britain received land from France and Spain which included what we recognize today as Florida. Due to its size, they divided the land into East and West Florida, with governments in St Augustine and Pensacola, respectively. Although seldom mentioned in the annuls of the Revolutionary War, both Great Britain and General Washington recognized the importance of the 14th and 15th Colonies, in the areas of economics, strategic location, available fortifications, and a potential source of seized munitions. As a

result, General Washington ordered a total of five invasions of East Florida which Great Britain successfully defeated, although a great deal of the Colonial failures in Florida were due to its own infighting. An interesting fact is that at the end of the war, East Florida was the only colony south of the Canadian Border, which was never lost to British control. At the end of the Revolutionary War, Great Britain returned East and West Florida to Spain. Whether you had attended the presentation of not, your curiosity should have been aroused about our home state and its involvement in the Revolutionary War. A good place to start would be Dr. Smith’s website: www.colonialra.com .

New Member Induction

Compatriot Terry Oldham was inducted into the Lake-Sumter Chapter in a ceremony conducted by Chapter President Jerry Hardwich, 1st Vice-President Allan Lane and Registrar John Moore. Liberty Tree Dedication - Lake-Sumter SAR by Ronald Grove

The Lake-Sumter Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, was chartered 30 years ago on October 22, 1988. To commemorate, at our November 3rd member meeting, we will plant our second Liberty Tree with a memorial plaque on the grounds of American Legion Post 219, where we meet. It will be a special part of our meeting and we expect several distinguished guests to attend. In 2009 the Liberty Tree Society (libertytreesociety.org) was founded to honor America’s first symbol of freedom in Boston. They provide the trees and memorial plaques for personal and private memorials. Their Liberty Trees are a disease-resistant American Liberty Elms developed by the Elm Research Institute in Keene, New Hampshire. We are looking forward to this celebration! For more information on the Liberty Tree Society and how to dedicate your own Liberty Tree, follow this link http://libertytree.org (Control Key, and click on the link).
