Acknowledging the generosity of the philanthropists, social activists and the government in moulding the university, Prof. Rao said that ANU now has a solid infrastructure including schools of classical studies. The university now has an international base attracting a large number of students from other countries pursuing studies here and thereby serving as a platform for cultural exchange among students. Eleven personalities who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields have been presented with Pratibha Puraskars on the occasion. Awards and prizes were also conferred on teachers for their achievements. Present in the celebrations were the Rector Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, the Registrar Prof. P. Rajasekhar, Dr. V. Jyothi Viyyanna Rao, the OSD Prof. A.V. Dattatreya Rao, the Principals of the ANU Colleges. Prof. V. Chandrasekhar Rao, Prof. B. Re Victor Babu, Dr. PPS Paul Kumar, Prof. E. Srinivasa Reddy, Prof. G. Babu Rao, staff, students and guests. Prof. G. V. Chalam, Dean, College Development Council, was the Convenor of the programme.

38th FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATIONS

ANU celebrated its 38th Foundation Day on 11-09-2014 with grandness and gaiety in the campus. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.V. Rao traced the growth of the university in its quest for excellence in academics and research.Acknowledging the generosity of the philanthropists, social activists and the government in moulding the university, Prof.Rao said that ANU now has a solid infrastructure including schools of classical studies. The university now has aninternational base attracting a large number of students from other countries pursuing studies here and thereby servingas a platform for cultural exchange among students.

Eleven personalities who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields have been presented withPratibha Puraskars on the occasion. Awards and prizes were also conferred on teachers for their achievements. Presentin the celebrations were the Rector Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, the Registrar Prof. P. Rajasekhar, Dr. V. ACADEMIC EXHIBITION

ANU organized an Academic Exhibition for the year2014-15 in the campus during August 21-23, 2014.Inaugurating the Exhibition, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.Viyyanna Rao said that such events serve to increaseknowledge and scientific temper in students. Through theirexhibits, students can showcase their talents and skills andin turn inspire others to come up with new ideas andinnovations. The Exhibition had enthusiastic participationby the university colleges, and affiliated colleges for whicha large number of stalls had been arranged in the UniversityCollege of Engineering. Present in the Inaugural were theRegistrar, the Principals of ANU Colleges, the OSD andothers. The Convenor of the event was Prof. G.V. Chalam,Dean, College Development Council. Students from variousschools and colleges came in large numbers to witness theexhibits.

The Valedictory function on 23-08-2014 waspresided over by the OSD Prof. A.V. Dattatreya Rao. TheVice-Chancellor gave away prizes to the best performingcolleges / departments.

The Department of Botany and Microbiology hasbeen actively engaged in Mangrove Research Project aspart of UGC-DRS-SAP scheme. Under this programme,the department conducted a national seminar onBiodiversity and Conservation of MangroveEcosystem in India-Present Status and FuturePerspective on 21-22 July, 2014. The seminar wasinaugurated by Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor,ANU, and keynote address was given by K.S. Varaprasad,

Acharya Nagarjuna University, in continuation of theMOU signed with Matrix Sea Foods on 13-06-2014, hasalso signed a lease agreement on 02-07-2014, for theacademic and research collaboration through the renovationand reestablishment of Aquaculture Training Centre ((ANU-MATRIX Advanced Aquaculture Research Centre,MAAARC) in the University with the participation of the Vice-Chancellor, the Rector and the Registrar of the university,faculty members of Zoology, CEO and Director of MatrixSea foods India Pvt. Ltd.

As per the lease agreement, the company reestablishesthe unutilized and damaged Aquaculture ponds, Nurseryponds, Class rooms and Laboratories of Aquaculture foreffective utilization within 6 months.

The company has also permitted to train the rural, poorand unemployed youth through Certificate and P.G. Diplomacourses through distance mode to cater to the needs ofAquaculture industry.

The company has also come forward to establish andextend the research infrastructure in the field of aquacultureby involving the faculty members and with the help ofdifferent funding agencies like NFDB,ICAR, DBT and DST.

The company also concentrates on farmer trainingprogrammes in Aquaculture especially in fish and shrimpfarming practices.

* The quandary between true mangroves and associatesneeds to be resolved and defined

* Active collaboration between research institutes/Universities and state forest departments only wouldensure the conservation and the sustainable utilizationof mangrove ecosystem services.

* Impact assessment studies of mangroves on carbonsequestration and green house gas fluxes need to becarried out.

* All converted, degraded and encroached wetlandsshould be identified and afforested.

* Mangrove wetlands that are still under revenue custodyshould be transferred immediately under control of theforest department for better care, nurture, propagationand conservation.

The seminar was attended by more than 300participants, staff and students.

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY – MOU

Under this programme the company will provide fish seedto farmers to enhance the fish production.

As per the MOU the following cooperative activities wereidentified:

* Collaboration in academic and research activities.* To establish an Aquaculture Training Centre (ANU-

MATRIX Advanced Aquaculture research Centre,MAAARC).

* To start the Certificate and Diploma courses inAquaculture through Centre for Distance Education.

* To provide short training and projects to M.Sc Zoologyand M.Sc. Aquaculture students.

NAAC WORKSHOP

A two day workshop on Preparation of SSR forNAAC Accreditation was conducted in the university forthe Principals, Secretaries and Correspondents of ANUaffiliated colleges in Guntur and Prakasam districts on July11-12, 2013. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Viyyanna Raopresided over the Inaugural session in which Prof. V.Venkaiah, Vice-Chancellor of Krishna University and Dr.G. Srinivas, Joint Secretary, UGC SERO, Hyderabad, werethe guests. Prof. Venkaiah spoke of the premium placed onquality in education in the modern competitive world Dr.Srinivas conveyed to the gathering that in future UGCassistance would be available only for colleges accreditedby NAAC. Prof. K.V. Rao said that only 25 out of 336 collegesin the university purview got accredited whereas the UGCstipulates that every college which completed 6 years ofexistence should go for accreditation. The resource personsfor the Workshop were Prof. T. Siddhaiah, former Registrar,SV University, Prof. A.V. Prasada Rao, former Registrar ofAndhra University, Prof. KRS Sambasiva Rao, ANU andProf. M. Vijayalakshmi, ANU. They explained to therepresentatives of the colleges about the preparation of theSelf Study Report.

Present in the workshop were the Registrar of theuniversity, the Principals of ANU colleges of Arts, Engineeringand Sciences. Prof. G.V. Chalam, Dean, CollegeDevelopment Council, ANU was the Convener of theWorkshop.

NAAC PREPARATORY MEETING

A meeting of the Principals of the university colleges,Chairpersons of PG Boards of Studies and Heads of thedepartments was held on 23-07-2014 in the context of theuniversity gearing up for reaccreditation in 2015. The Vice-Chancellor reviewed various measures and identified anaction plan to be followed. The Rector Prof. Y.P.Ramasubbaiah, the Registrar Prof. P. Rajasekhar, theDirector of IQAC Prof. K. Ratna Shiela Mani and facultyparticipated in the interaction.

WORKSHOP ON PREPARATION OF SSR

A workshop on “Preparation of SSR for NAAC” wasorganized by the Dean, College Development Council Prof.G.V. Chalam on 9-8-14 to provide guidance to the universityfaculty and administration about the different parametersof assessment in the Self Study Report. The university isdue for reaccreditation by National Assessment andAccreditation Council (NAAC) in 2015 and the workshophas been organized as part of gearing itself for it. Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor said that it is imperative for the facultyto have clarity and awareness of the criteria in the SSR.The resource persons for the workshop are Prof. I.B. RamPrasad, Osmania University, Hyderabad and Prof. A.V.Dattatreya Rao, OSD, ANU. The Rector Prof. Y.P.Ramasubbaiah, the Registrar Prof. P. Rajasekhar and theDirector of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Prof. K.Ratna Shiela Mani also were present in theworkshop.

The Dept. of Education conducted a HealthEducation Camp for Rural Women at Nambur during 16th &17th September 2014. Rural women were surveyed andgiven counseling and training on Low Cost Nutrition, ChildCare, Health and Hygiene by Dr. I. Victoria Susan, Dr. G.Yashoda and Dr. T. D. Vimala. Nambur Sarpanch Mrs.Khasim Bi and MPTC members also participated andeducated the women in the camp. University Doctor Dr.Jimmy Rani and Gynecologist Dr. Ch. Sandhya Raniinteracted with the women and conducted medicalexaminations. Free medicines were distributed to the ruralwomen at the camp. Supporting Staff, Research Scholarsand M.Ed. students actively participated in the camp.

ACADEMIC EXHIBITION

University college of Pharmaceutical Sciences wonthe 2nd prize in the professional courses category in theAcademic Exhibition held in A.N.U during 21st, 22nd and 23rd

August 2014. The College had exhibited various events likedrug designing process, clinical trials procedures, animalexperimentation methods and operating procedures of variouspharmaceutical instrumentations like disintegration apparatus,capsule filling machine etc. It also exhibited drug-foodinteraction, drug adulterations, blood grouping and B.P checkup.

Inter-College Cross-Country Competitions

A.N.U.C.P.S organized an Inter-college Cross Countrycompetitions on 18th September in which various sportscompetitions were organized separately for both women andmen. Running competitions of 12.5 km. for men and 6 km. forwomen were conducted. Overall championship was also givendepending on overall performances of the contestants fromvarious colleges. The winners were nominated to participatein the South Indian cross-country competitions.

"Online VideoRecording Room” wasinaugurated in theInternational StudentsCell on 04-09-2014 bythe Vice - ChancellorProf. K. Viyyanna Rao,accompanied by Prof. P.Rajasekhar, Registrar;Prof. A. V. DattatreyaRao, OSD; Prof. V.Chandrasekhar, Director,ISC; Prof. M.V.Ramkumar Ratnam,Coordinator, CDE, and Schoolguru team. Schoolguru Officeand Staff Rooms were also inaugurated on the occasion.

68th INDEPENDENCE DAYANU organized the 68th Independence Day celebrations in a fitting

manner on 15 August 2014 in the Campus. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.V.Rao hoisted the national flag after garlanding the statues of the nationalleaders in the campus. He gave a call to the students to derive inspirationfrom the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and contribute to theprogress of society. A large number of staff and students participated in thecelebrations. Later the Vice-Chancellor led the university community inplanting 600 red sandal trees to expand the green cover in the university.

RELEASE OF NSS GRANTS

The following NSS 2nd Installment Regular Grants werereleased during the period July – September, 2014. EachNSS Unit had received an amount of Rs. 6,000/- (rupeessix thousand only) for 131 NSS units who had successfullycompleted Special Camping Programmes.

NSS ACTIVITIES (July – September 2014)

A Meeting of University Level NSS AdvisoryCommittee was held on 11.08.2014 at ANU with Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice Chancellor, ANU, as Chairperson. He stressedthe need to create awareness in the public of governmentschemes, traffic control etc. and the desirability of creating atoll free number for Blood donation. Sri K.S. LakshmanaRao, M.L.C., suggested that NSS Volunteers should stay inthe villages while organizing the NSS camps. The annualbudget for 2014-15 for NSS was also discussed. Life Skills The IMS, Guntur, conducted a workshop on “Life

Skills Strategies and Techniques” which was inauguratedin the University by the Chief Guest Prof.K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor Acharya Nagarjuna University on 11-08-2014.Life skills for employment are necessary for the students aspublished in the NASSCOM Report. In this programme Prof.V. Chandrasekhara Rao, Principal, ANU College of Arts,Commerce and Law explained to the students the need oflife skills for their career. Awareness was created on variousissues like Problem solving, Critical thinking, Communicationskills, Decision Making, Creative thinking, Interpersonalrelationship skills, Self-awareness building skills, Empathy,Coping with the stress, Emotions. The Workshop DirectorDr.B.Nagaraju said that 400 students who attended thisprogramme were distributed material by the Institute ofManagement Studies, Guntur.

Interview Techniques

CENTRE FOR HRD

A programme on Interview Techniques sponsoredby the E.A. Academy was organised in ANU on 27-08-2014.The Director Sri Y.V. Syam Sundar discussed theimportance of the corporate companies and interviewtechniques to the students. The themes of this programmeare Personality Development, Knowledge, Communicationskills, Leadership Quality. A.V.Srilakshmi informed thestudents to fill the gap between the requirements of theIndustry and courses of M.B.A(IB), M.B.A , M.Com students.

The Centre for HRD,ANU, organized a programmeon “Digital Humanities for Arts”on 15-9-2014. Prof. M.V.Ramkumar Ratnam, Dean ofHumanities, participated in aninteractive session with thestudents. In this programmenearly 300 students from

various departments of Telugu, English, Hindi, Sanskrit,Education, History and research scholars were present.

Goal Setting and Interview PreparationThe Centre for HRD,

ANU, organized the workshopon “Goal Setting and InterviewPreparation” in the campus on20-9-2014 for ANU students.The resource person wasG.N.Prasad, Career Mentor,Guntur.

Social Exclusion: Personality Development

The Centre for HRD, ANU, conducted a lecture on“Social Exclusion: Personality Development” as aninteractive session with the Mr.P.V.Sunil Kumar I.P.S,Inspector General of Police on 27-09-2014. As theresource person of this session, he shared his views ondevelopment and promoting equality among all the people.Dr.B.Nagaraju Director, HRD, coordinated this programme.

DSC Coaching Programme

ANU Centre for HRD organized a coachingprogramme DSC 2014 for all eligible ANU students on 22-09-2014 in ANU. Orientation was given by Sri K.S.Lakshmana Rao, MLC, Guntur. Prof. K. V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU inaugurated the coaching programme.

As part of undertaking activities for discharging theCommunity Social Responsibility by the University College,the Vice-Chancellor Prof.K.Viyyanna Rao established a cellfor Community Social Responsibility in June 2014. Apart fromTeaching and Research, the cell undertakes CommunityOutreach and Extension activities. Dr. Saraswati Raju Iyerand Dr. M. Venkata Ramana were appointed as Coordinatorand as Project Assistant of Community Social Responsibilityrespectively. Programmes would be organized for themarginalized and disadvantaged groups such as Children,Youth, Elderly, Women, the Physically challenged, theMentally challenged, the Scheduled Castes, the ScheduledTribes, the Backward Class communities and the like. Theseactivities would include awareness programmes on varioussocial issues, income generation activities, eye camp, dentalcamp, health camp, training programmes, capacity buildingprogrammes etc. based on the needs of the society.

Dress Making Programme for Socially Backward Women

Samsthan, Ongole, Prakasam Districts as part of “CommunitySocial Responsibility”, ANU College, from 03-09-2014 to 26-09-2014 in which 30 women participated. Ms. Suhasini, theInstructor of the programme, gave training in making around20 items such as cell phone pouches, pen pouches, luggagebags, files, ladies’ handbags, hand purse, gents purses etc.The programme was inaugurated by Dr.Saraswati Raju Iyer,Coordinator, CSR, ANU. Shri Shyam Sunil, In-chargeDirector, Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Prakasam District, ShriL.Harinath, D.Rajendra Prasad and M.Harikrishnam Raju,Programme Officers of Jan Sikshan Sansthan andDr.M.Venkata Ramana, Project Assistant, CSR, ANU,participated in the inaugural function.

The valedictory function of Jute craft makingprogramme was organized in the office of Jan SikshanSamsthan, Ongole, Prakasam District on 15-10-2014. TheChief Guest, Prof.K.R.S.Sambasiva Rao, Rector, ANU, saidthat such vocational training programmes help in bringingout the skills of women resulting in self employment andincome generation. Towards the end of these sessions the participantsgave their feedback about the training programme.

Prof.K.Viyyanna Rao,Vice-Chancellor of the University was the Guest of Honourwhile Prof.Y.P.RamaSubbaiah, Rector, ANU andProf.P.Rajashekhar, Registrar, ANU were the other Guestsfor the function. Krishna has conducted a workshop on Big Data. As a curtainraiser for starting a research center on Big Data Analytics,an orientation programme was held in University College ofEngineering and Technology on 13th September 2014. Heemphasized the need of analytics in high dimensional dataand their algorithms. Around thirty faculty membersparticipated in this workshop.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CELL

The International Students Cell conducted anOrientation Program, Welcome Function for the InternationalStudents on 13th September, 2014 in the campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, ANU, Prof. K.Viyyanna Raowas the Chief Guest, while Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, Rector,Prof. P. Rajasekhar , Registrar, and Prof. V.ChandrasekharaRao, Director, ISC were the Guests of Honour. The guestsgave their valuable message to the international students onthis occasion.

Delivering the Inaugural address, the Vice-Chancellor has called upon the young students to becreative in thought, positive in attitude and innovative inperspective in order to become successful entrepreneurs.It is not due to lack of financial resources that the youth arenot coming forward to be entrepreneurs but mainly due tolack of self-confidence and assertive personality. The VCemphasized the need for the young graduates to shapethe nation through building up enterprises.

Mr. D. Nagasundar, General Manager, DIC,Guntur, in his address to the students, gave assurance toextend all sorts of assistance for establishing successfulprojects and enterprises. The Director of the Centre Prof.Noorbasha Abdul, has explained the need, purpose andthe future programmes of the Centre.

CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT (CED)

The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) wasinaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. V. Rao on 9th

September, 2104 following the decision taken unanimouslyin the 70th Academic Senate meeting of the University. TheVice- Chancellor has announced an initial corpus of Rs. 10lakhs for running the Centre for the Academic Year 2014-15.

INCENTIVE FOR SOLAR POWERUTILIZATION

ANU received a cheque Rs. 30 lakhsfrom NREDCAP Director Mr. Harnath Babuas subsidy / incentive for production andutilization of solar power in the campus. ANUhas, in recent times, made giant strides inestablishing solar power plants at a cost ofmore than Rs. 1 crore. The cheque washanded over to the Vice-Chancellor on theoccasion of the 38th Foundation Daycelebrations on 11-9-2014.

ANU CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN WEIGHTLIFTINGThe Sports Board of Acharya Nagarjuna University,

realising the importance of Long Term Sports Coaching, hasdecided to launch a long term coaching scheme forupcoming sports persons in selected individual events fromthe academic year 2014-15.

In line with this idea the University has started a“Center of Sports Excellence in Weightlifting” on theuniversity campus from the academic year 2014-15.
