3 PRESIDENT SPEAKS NovemberThe Show Must Go On! Queen (The Band)

Without any hassles, 5 months have passed since we started a new term as an EC.

The DCP goals are complete. The District 82 contest is over. We are happy to seenew people join and also on the other hand saddened to see old ones leave. But thatis the way life is supposed to be, I guess.

I see a lot of people afraid of coming on the stage and their nervousness about

speaking in front of a large audience. Some of them join Toastmaster. Everyonejoins Toastmaster for various reasons, but only a few conquer their fear of public

speaking and enhance as a good public speaker. These are those who take part inthe meetings regularly, prepare speeches and deliver them, who envisage them-selves as one of the successful ones. For this they practice and practice, becauseskill of public speaking only gets better when you practice. So, pick up that commu-

nication manual of yours, call the VP Education and participate, because the

world is only to applaud your performance.

There were some other interesting activities in the previous month for a lot of Toast-masters of our club. First there was the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon in which fewmembers participated and enjoyed a day out. Secondly, there was the District 82

contest in Mumbai, The REVERBERATIONS! At around the same time, we, at ourclub, tried something new from the suggestions in the Hyde Park. The action has

    just begun!

In the end, I wish you achieve what you want to .

4 Do I belong??- Akhil Sood NovemberBorn and brought up in Faridabad and travelling to Delhi for my education and work andso many more activities, over the years, I have been perennially faced by a question, where do I belong? Am I a Delhite? Am I an outsider?

The question found its roots during my college days where the entire class will divideitself into South Delhi Vs East Delhi and have a real war of words. The South Delhi peo-ple trying to establish their superiority and The East Delhi people giving them an equalfight, Yet there was this guy, there with the entire bunch, laughing and sympathizing withboth the groups and could jokingly take any side temporarily. He didnt have an identity,Not that he wasnt made fun at, he had a normal college life and those people remainhis best buddies and acquaintances.

Enter the office and the only thing that changed was no South Vs East going on here.We were all Delhites working in Gurgaon and some staying there to cut-off their traveltime. Yet there remained a guy, again pretty much mixed in the group and yet so far as it

wasnt possible for him to visit Delhi every Saturday as that was the only day he got toinvest on himself. He lost friends as there wasnt any time on weekends, the ones whoremained constantly deteriorated or were kept connected by the Nokias and the Sam-sungs.

Delhi was the only city he had ever lived in, and yet he was too far off from his buddies. Astime engaged the thoughts into more important priorities, life went by at its own pace. Therewere times when he felt proud that he was a delhite and then the newspaper next day madehim feel absolutely ashamed of his new ownerships. There were times when Commonwealthgames got in his spirit and then he saw the scam-a-thon after that. Everytime he made an at-tempt to take the ownership, he was refuted by the same repeated offences.

The question can never find an answer for itself but I realized that it was my own choice, Me-dia played a role but I had to choose if I belong to Delhi? Yes I loved the city, It has given meeducation, everything I sought, then I have to choose it. The city also did something which icould not do earlier. It found me a reason to visit very Saturday, via JPKU Toastmasters.

MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH5 NovembAdvertisements started in 4000 B.C. and are still going very strong. The one you can see along-side was the first advertisement by Coca Cola in 1890s A.D and the second one can well featurein an advertisement for JPKU Toastmasters Club!!

Dont you just love when your favorite ad is on the television or aired on the radio?

Dont you just stare a piece of paper for a long time having that product which you havebeen tempted to for a long time?Arent you intimidated to take some action when there is some advertisement address-ing an important social issue?Dont you just hate it when in an advertisement your favorite celebrity is with a normalguy and you wished you were there instead of him / her?

Advertisements now days are generally directed towards our emotions. That is why we feel somuch connected to it. Sometime we feel like the person in the ad, and sometimes we feel like thenormal person next to the celebrity in the advertisement. Whatever we feel, the companies get thework done in a neat manner and get what they want, Income! In any way, I feel happy that the ads

are there to inform us. Now when I have to go for shopping, I know what I want to purchase andfor how much. It saves me a lot of time and well, gives me the status of male shopper who doesntwaste much time shopping.

On the contrary to quality of informing to the audience, they also misguide people who are notcareful. It is because people start believing the ads to be true and dont think about consequencesof buying stuff just after watching the advertisement. That is why it is good to refer to the word ofmouth. Go and shop with your friends!I have had a habit of discussing advertisements with my friends. The one I discussed ads the mostwent to a different time zone. I tried finding someone else, but all hard work went to my drains. Iwas unable to share what I felt about ads with anyone, so I thought I would do a theme onAdvertisements.

MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH contd..6Excellence isbeing the best you can bedoing everything to the best of your abilityExcellence isbeing happy with what you have accomplished

And also being proud of yourselfExcellence canmake you succeed in lifeand also make you see not onlywhat you have becomebut you can becomeExcellence can help you not only become a stronger orsmarter person, but also a BETTER person

This week's theme was excellence and main idea behind this theme was to understand that realmeaning of excellence, real meaning for our li fe and specially for our toastmaster life. Toast-

master is the platform which gives us many opportunities to learn, to practise and to become abetter communicator. But is it enough or do we need something else something more to reachthat higher level?

I think everyday we come across so many situations in our life when we need to communicateour ideas, our proposals, our feelings and that communication is successful if our audience isable to understand what we want him/her to understand. To demonstrate the same, in themeeting we had a special session - "Learning from Videos", where we played a number of vid-eos from very diverse sources (Toastmasters, TED, Movies etc) just to demostrate the variousaspects of communication successfully employed by speakers. Each speech was followed bydiscussion amongst members present over various aspects of speech delivered and it was verywell received session.

The meeting had a very small gathering and Akhisented a very nice and informative speech on "Msame was evaluated by our first timer evaluator "S

who did a fantastic job at the same. I am thankfulmembers present to make this meeting excellent.would not have been possible without your presesupport .

MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH contd..7 NovemSteve Jobs is known for egotism, wearing blue jeans with black mock turtle-necks (besides Apple). The first time Steve Jobs was CEO of Apple, his ham-handed management style got him fired and his unwillingness to license his soft-ware dampened the company's growth. He won't produce anything he doesn't

think beautiful. He develops his vision by examining the products of competitorsand asking himself what he likes about them andwhat he wants them to have. He did that with MP3players, then cell phones and smart phones and incame the ipod and iphone and now the ipad. Appleproducts are inspiring because of the single mindedfocus of this company on design perfection. This pas-sion for perfection in details transfers to the owners ofApple products.

What lessons can we learn from Apple??Ask yourself are you investing in a product or your

career for the short term or long term?. Can you beemotionally involved and passionate in your work? Can you spend additional 20% to invest in a long last-ing product or service or do you want to compromise? These are choices thatwe face everyday but Steve Jobs proves that there is a market for Quality andApples stock price and market capitalization proves that there the future is se-cure for companies which have a uncompromising on their principles

Life would be so difficult without Apple!

    Sameep Taneja

You are the most hardworking but yet when itcomes to handle a project, the boss always findssomeone else. Hasnt that happened with yousometime soon?? There is another component

over and above your talent, your hard work, yourefficiency and that is luck. Luck is something whichgets an extreme importance in the various endeav-ors we undertake in our daily life. How many if usactually believe in it?

The most peculiar part of this component is that weonly remember it for negative reasons. The same luck is not visible we achieve something. In that case its always about hard work, ouciency and our talent. Luck is not prevalent at that juncture of time. Wea funny thing in the meeting and asked for adjectives to describe lucthe answers were sad, bad, hard, tough, good, etc. The point is thnegative ones outnumbered the positive ones. So If we are feeding ouwith all these negatives, how on earth can we think of luck returningfor us?

The man who persists through the bad luck is the one who keeps on and he is the one who is there when the good luck arrives Robert C

Luck is just a chance of happening of fortunate or adverse events. Al

have both good luck and bad luck and the only way to find more of

fortune is to take up more chances. Stand a little more, fight a little

and you will win a little more. Remember to be gratuitous and sp

thought when the good luck comes. After all, the magic word work

    luck too. Akhil Sood

NovembTHE HYDE PARK- Toastmasters Edge9The Hyde Parkin London is famous for its Speakers Corner, which allows anyone and everyone to speak on a topic for as long as they can unless the police finds it o

and the Hyde Park police has had a history of being offended very rarely even on sensitive issues. As a salutation to the freedom of expression, we bring Hyde Park

don to our newsletter, and invite everyone to publish their comments on a certain topic, which for this month is: "The toastmasters edge"

I joined JPKU Toastmasters about three and half years ago and I cansee a remarkable change in my way of speaking, interacting with otherpeople and handling situations. I would like to share the same:

    1. Confidence: The biggest positive outcome of my joining Toastmas-ters have been the remarkable enhancement in confidence levelwhile speaking over a topic I know, I dont know in unknown setting.

    2. Listening skills: Evaluations section is a very important part of toast-masters meetings and this has definitely made me able to listen andappreciate to other peoples' ideas in a better way.

    3. Networking: I being an engineer have always been in company ofother engineers and Toastmaster was a good way to expand my net-work beyond people of same profession. The wide variety of profes-sions that people come here definitely adds to my social network. Its avery nice platform to interact and meet people and befriend them.My experience of last 3 odd years has been quite satisfying and I amsure it will even get better with each meeting..

TM no longer stands for Toastmaster, I interpret isas 'TowardsMagic'. Have you ever imagined that the wordswe use to communicate are so powerful, if usedproperly can create Magic. Toastmaster's helpsus identify how to harness this power and makeour communication nothing less than a perform-ance. Whether talking to a friend or addressing alarge audience, you can stun anyone with yourchoice of words, body language and tonality. The

biggest advantage that Toastmaster has providedis the ability to predict the outcome or desired im-pact of my speech on my audience. Making peo-ple feel the pain & pleasure at the same time, in-stigating confidence & ready to die for atti-tude are just some of the outcomes one can cre-ate. These special moments can be rightly termedas 'magic moments'. Would suggest everyonethink of moving 'Towards Magic' .

    Ritu Arora

In the last four years toastmasters has made me realize afew things

    1) It doesnt matter whether you stand first, second orthird, what matters is to learn through performance andcompetence.

    2) Who won the best evaluator is not important, giving anhelpful and inspiring feedback is important.

    3) It doesnt matter how many certificates or trophies youwon, what matters is how many lives you have touched.

    4) How good a speaker you become is nowhere close to

how good a human being you becomeEverything I have learnt in life, is through Toastmasters.

Toastmasters has notonly shown me the at-tributes i am lacking atbut also has given methe platform and men-tors to enhance myskills and become moreconfident in life
