    SEPTEMBER 2010

Toastmasters has not only helped improve my public speaking skills but has also given a

chance to meet, interact and befriend truly amazing people. My toastmasters journey

started on May 12, 2007 and has seen many ups and downs in last three and half years. I

had to take a break from toastmasters because of studies and I rejoined only this may. This September has beenimportant for me. I started taking active part in Toastmasters activities and finally delivered a speech after a

break of almost three years. Through this newsletters channel, I would like to thank all fellow toastmasters fortheir support and guidance.

This September was also a month of competitions. Humorous Speech and Evaluation contest at both Club level

and Area level were held this month. My congratulations to the winners and best wishes for the upcoming Divi-

sion level contest. Also, Our club has received Smedley Award for adding nine new members in the months ofAugust and September.

In this issue, Club President Malkiat Bindra talks about contests and shares his vision for the club, DTM Ritu

Arora shares her views about competitions, and Sangeeta Malik presents her thoughts on how each one of us

can carve out their unique identity. In the Hyde Park section we invited new ideas that could become a part ofour meetings and received some exciting new thoughts. We will attempt to test and incorporate these over the

next few meetings. Read about two new toastmasters in the Know Thy Toastmaster section.

    Hope you enjoy reading!!!

4 WOULD YOU DO IT AGAINSo Mike Tyson beat the hell out ofyou, and you hear Ding DingDing. You go back to your cornerin the boxing ring, knowing thatyou have to face the same guy

again, in the next round. You areprobably thinking This guy willmake a pulp out of me.

Have you ever felt that way?Have you ever lost a contest?Have you ever given up on your-self? I have.November 2007, Mangalore, I hadlost the first District Contest of mylife. It was so easy to put theblame on someone else: the Judges were unfair, the weather was just too humid, thestage didnt like me, the food was too spicy, the other contestants were cuter looking. Oh I

could blame just about anything, but the reality was, I was just not that good.

So I decided, I am not going to participate again, ever.

That phase lasted for about 3 hours, till I stepped out for dinner with a friend and fellowcontestant who had lost as well. Over dinner we spoke about our strategies, ourstrengths, our weaknesses, and the disappointment and despair at not winning. Tearscame and tears went and soon we found ourselves laughing at what we had done, andwhat the other contestants had done. We spoke of the good times we had while prepar-ing, the fun and the learning. We talked about the experience, and that had been grand, and then my friend asked me a seemingly innocent question: Would you do it again?

It was then that I realized, we all fail, at different stages in our lives, but we still go on. Likea child who learns how to walk for the first time, falls, gets up tries to walk, falls again, stands up again, tries to walk again, and keeps falling till he finally learns how to walkwithout falling.

For the sake of the win, for the sake of the experience, for the sake of the fun in thepreparation, and probably for the sake of proving to myself that I could, I did do it again.

Whether I won or lost is immaterial, because I did win friends, and the self-confidand I did win myself the right to pen this story down.

Over the last few years, I have realized, that sometimes its okay to tell people I ambecause I lost or It hurts, its okay to let people see your tears, and its okay to ha

long face. In my opinion, it shows you are strong enough to openly talk about your ings. Whatever you do, do not quit, here are a few lines from my favourite poem:

Often the struggler has given up,When he might have captured the victors cup,And he learnt too late when the night slipped down,How close he was to the golden crown.

So, rise and shine, and hone your skill, strategise for strength alone may fail. Go f

again, another contest season is just round the corner, can you hear the Ding D

5 CARVE OUT YOUR OWN STATUENo matter what you appear on your exteriors, peep withinand you will see an immense potential, potential to changeinto a beautiful form the form which you envision for your-self the form that is going to be your final master-

piece.an incredible piece of your vision and hard work.

Your hand creates what your mind conceives. The world con-sists of three kinds of people. First- there are those whodream. Their mind conceives a larger picture, a beautifulone yes, I want to be a master speaker and no one canmatch my communication skills. They just love their dreamand never go a step beyond that. Are you really one of thosewho stepped forward, became a member but when it cameto speeches just worked on the wonderful rule of procrastina-tion?

Then there is another kind. These are those who dreamedand just started on a marathon. They may be just moving in

a direction which does not lead them anywhere. They mayjust drift through life and allow circumstances to push them to and fro. Or they may be-come the rabbit who takes a leap, and then goes into a deep slumber after a phase, re-alizing too late in life that they have goofed up!!!

Are you the ones who plan, prepare and execute? This is the third kind, the righteousattitude of the winners. Your attitude determines your altitude. So here we go carving astatue for ourselves.

Creating a statue is very much like creating a life. You have seen a glimpse of what youreally want to be. A master sculptor really has to have a clear concept of what he wantsthe marble to transform into. One mistake can ruin the whole piece. So he starts with thepencil drawings, the ones which help him sketch and erase and re sketch time and

again till he is satisfied with what he wants. Life does allow us to sometimes go backand correct ourselves but a good planning will always help us save time, money, energyand our self esteem. How about the test run? Unlike the sculptor who can make hiswooden or clay statue to test the final product we cannot have a miniature model of lifebut can have a test run of our speeches again and again, if we are sculpting one aspect. Now let us start with a swift blow. Chip away that from your personality which is not

really required. Such peripheral parts must go or else the negatives in you whave got accustomed to will always stay glued to you. Similarly chip away fspeaking skills the flaws you were not even aware of. Evaluations will be a grehelp you with.

Sculpt your life and give it a form. It is a fine art of actually slowly and delicateing your statues intended shape and beauty. Our lives are sculpted primarily byple we associate with and the books we read. In a similar manner, sculpt your swith a fine chisel to give your rough draft the final shape.

Then comes the time of sanding your statue with the adversities of life which statue the final form and makes it a masterpiece and add substance to it. Wherconsider speaking skills, all your goof ups and a steady encouraging hand of yotoastmasters will push you through and help remove them with a gentle sandpaing.

Finally we come to the polishing of our masterpiece to let the whole world beautiful a piece we are. Remember the painter always gives a first stroke, obs

faults, repairs them, adds another coat, still not satisfied with the sheen goes finishes it its full glory. Are you ready to go through all the effort of moulding sonal statue your life? Let us first work with the smaller goals in life your ccation skills and see if this format works. If it does, call it Sangeetas law of your Statue and give her a Nobel Prize for her first article.

    MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH6

    AKHIL SOOD

Sometime in 2004, when I used to cross Akshard-ham temple everyday, to attend my college and at-tain my basic education. No, I didnt get any morereligious than I ever was but my thoughts alwayswandered through the under construction site thatwas opposite to the temple. Immediately my mindcreated digital images of 2010 and the only city Ihave ever lived in, Delhi, how beautiful it will lookwhen it is ready to stage the CommonwealthGames 2010. Its September 2010 and the muchanticipated games are about to start, the million dollar question are we ready? Icould not see any visible initiations being made as late as 2007 and thats when I hitthe concept Just in time

We Indians are too smart and we seem to know the precise moment we shall startworking to accomplish the task in time. For the games it was in 2008. We neededtwo years and not seven. Suddenly I realised it simply not about the games. Its inour blood and is directly related to the different stages of our lives. Preparing for

exam in school, Making presentations in colleges and offices. We always started afew days late and yet managed to finish well in time. I felt something moving withinme to change me, to change the mastered art of just in time and the only way Icould do that was to declare it in the meeting. So the theme was decided to be justin time and believe me I again decided in a real test of time again.

The meeting started a little late and was blessed by the presence of esteemed per-sonalities Immediate Past District Governor DTM Deepak Menon and Area Gover-nor DTM Ritu Arora. There were four speeches including Deepak Menons StraightTalk, Vinay Yadavs Icebreaker Sumit Doras OverConfidence, and Sameer Khat-tars Sustained Development. The best speaker was won by Sumit Dora. Ritu Arorawon the best evaluator for evaluating Deepaks speech

Sanchit Gupta served as the table topic master and he ensured that everyone getsan opportunity to speak on some interesting topics related to the central theme forthe meeting. Ritu Arora won the best tabletopic speaker. In Unison, we all pray that the decision to do nothing for 5 years doesnt backfires

and somehow we manage to organise the Games without any more hassles. The

more important part was that we decide to do away with this habit of just in time.

Every Toastmaster chooses to take up multiple roles

during the course of her or his journey as a Toastmas-

ter but if the Toastmaster happens to be an Executive

Committee member of the club, the option of choosing

does not exist. The author has been suffering from asimilar lack of options, partly because of his role in the

Executive Committee and partly because of the

dearth of members interested in taking up the role of

the Toastmaster of the Day. Are the club members

    reading this?

    Meeting on September 4, 2010:

September 5th is a special occasion, and that is not

just because the otherwise drab and boring class-

rooms are decked up in gold, silver and colors of the

rainbow or because on the day teachers can be easilytalked into not teaching, but because the day cele-

brates one of the oldest professions and undoubtedly the most critical one for hu

gress teaching. The meeting on September 4, 2010 was all about the impact o

    Learning.

A Toastmasters Club is a great place to learn. One not only learns the nuances o

speaking and builds leadership skills, but also learns about Rubiks cubes and ac

pack of cards, about the alphabet V and the speeches of Swami Vivekananda. T

world is available while one is choosing a topic for the next speech and the entire

gets served on a platter to everyone attending a Toastmasters meeting.

During the meeting, Akhil presented his fourth project, Nitya introduced

the audience to street jazz and Deepak Menon presented a collectionof Swami Vivekanandas speeches. Vikas had taken up the role of the

Table Topics Master for the meeting and his experiment of testing every

speakers perspective on different items with respect to yesterday, to-

day and tomorrow was very well received and involved every speaker.

MEETING THEME OF THE MONTH contd..7

    ANEESH JAIN

    Meeting on September 18, 2010:

The JPKU Toastmasters Club Humorous Speech and Evaluations contests were held

on September 11. The Area C2 Humorous Speech and Evaluations contests were

scheduled to be held on September 26. The meeting on September 18 was midway

between the two sets of contests, and aptly theme of that meeting was Competition.

Competitions play an important role in our lives. They help set performance bench-

marks for us. The zeal to outdo competition provides a participant with the impetus to

prepare better. The better preparation results in better results. This is how mankinds

progress gets accelerated. The competition between erstwhile Soviet Union and

United States led to great progress in space technology. More progress was made in

space technology in those two score years than was made in two hundred. But com-

petition has its ills. Every progressive society or organization manages to balance the

good and the evil of competitions and gets the best out of those, to generate enough

enthusiasm in the participants to prepare and perform better, yet not enough to start

    discovering ways around the rulebooks.

There were three speakers during the meeting. Ankush presented his icebreaker andrevealed to the audience how he learns from every individual around him. Biswajit de-

livered his eighth project on how ants manage to work in the most efficient way with-

out competing with each other. Ritu delivered her one hundred and third about how

competitions have changed her life and how she missed them now. Ritu also con-

ducted the Table Topics round and all the participants were somehow linked to a

    Pepsi drinking competition.

SeptemKNOW THY TOASTMASTER9Sanchit Aggarwal was born and brought up in Delhi. He completed his schooling from Laxman Public School and post-

that he joined Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), Delhi. Sanchit got a rank under 100 in the entrance test. His hobbies include movies,. He is a gadget freak and loves reading about technology. He also loves playing table tennis

and has won some inter-school and inter-college table tennis competitions. He works as a Technology Consultant with

Abus Security Center, which is a video surveillance firm. Lets know more about the toastmaster from himself...

Q1: How did you come to know about Toastmasters?Hearing about Toastmaster was a sheer accident. I met a good friend of mine after 2

years for a dinner. It was a nice evening, and as everybody does we were sharing ourpast 2 years experience with each other. In the conversation, he mentioned that he is a

member of a club known as Toastmasters Club. He briefly told me about this uniquesociety. Once I went home, I googled about this club and thought to myself that thiscould be an opportunity to overcome my public speaking fear. But still I was indeci-sive before my first meeting. Once I attended the meeting, I realised what this place

can do for me, and then there was no turning back. Today I am a proud member ofJPKU Toastmasters club.

Q2: How will you like to sum up your experience at Toastmasters so far?It feels that I have joined a college again. But this time, its a much more encouraging

place. I have participated and organised many events in my college days, but I wasmostly backstage. Toastmasters has given me an opportunity to overcome all thosefears which I never left in my college. I love the way meetings are conducted where

each person can play a role whether he/she is delivering a speech or not. Everything isso much structured that it makes the participant much more comfortable than he/shecan be anywhere else. I also love the concept of the manual, where the goal of everyspeech is clearly defined, and the evaluation is done keeping that goal in mind.

Q3: Where can Toastmaster help you? What heights do you want to attain?

I have been to some meetings now and I have also given my Ice-Breaker speech. I feelthat joining this club is not only improving my public speaking confidence but the actof writing speeches is also provides me a totally different outlook of the topic I choosefor writing. Also, listening to others speak on varied topics makes me ponder over the

same issue.Although there are many engineers in our country, but it is a very small world. Every-

body is more or less alike. But Toastmasters has given me an opportunity to meet peo-ple from diverse backgrounds of different age groups with whom I can interact freely.I am looking forward to finish my manuals and move on to the next step. After sometime, I would like to go beyond and explore whatever opportunities I can get.

Q4: You are working with a startup; how importanteffective communication is for a company in its ini-

    tial stags?

In a startup, there is only one policy, Every man forhimself. Team work is pivotal for any firm, where eve-

ryone has a defined role to play, but in start-ups thesituation is a little different. In start-ups everybody, oneday or the other, needs to play a role which is not thepart of his/her job description. I work as a Technology Consultant, which describes my job as a

designer for projects, but many a time I have played a role in sales and marketing activities of pany, where I was sent for presentations or client meetings to explain the solution. In start-ups

expected to be a good speaker, or at least somebody who can put forward his/her ideas clearly everybody, when required. All these reasons make communication skills very important criteri

    survival.

Q5: You have interest in movies; how do you think movies are changing the way we think

    have?

Movies are a medium by which a storyteller sells a dream, which people can see and observe. romantic love story or a movie on a social issue. Movies give its viewer a new perspective. Buthe times it is forgotten as soon as we leave the theatre. Movies do have a potential to bring a schange in our lives or to bring a new dimension to the way we think but personally I dont thin

today except for its entertainment value, it has achieved anything. I understand that the basic fany movie is its entertainment value but sometimes it feels nice to see movies which are not on

taining but also conveys a social message. My favourite Hindi ones are Swades and Rang de BBoth are patriotic movies but sheds light on totally different issues.

Q6: Any suggestions for fellow members or the concept in general?

The speeches, table topics, joke/word of the day and then finally the evaluations. All

these activities provide an all-round development to any individuals public speaking

skills. But just speaking fluently doesnt make anyone a good public speaker. The body

language also plays a pivotal role. The best way to improve the body language is by

acting. We can conduct a skit of about 10-15 minutes once a month with 5-6 mem-

bers. It will help us improve our body language as well as our timing and speed.

SeptembKNOW THY TOASTMASTER10Ankush Gupta is a club member from the institute across the street i.e. Indian Institute of Technology,

Delhi. Ankush is of the opinion is that thinking mathematics is always better than learning it. Lets knowmore about the toastmaster from himself.

Q1: How did you come to know about Toastmasters and how has beenyour journey so far?Answer: I was introduces to toastmasters by Sanchit Gupta, my friend and afellow member. I joined about 3 weeks back and has just given an Icebreakerspeech. The journey has not been long but it has been pretty interesting. Met alot of new people, made some new friends and have started improving mypublic speaking ability already.

Q2: In your ice breaker speech, you mentioned different people who havehelped you in your journey of life, can you elaborate it here?My life is strongly influenced by my friends. I would like to mention a few.Sanchit has always inspired me to try new things with confidence and not toworry too much about consequences. Nitin and Vikash always tell me how to

take life easy and be there for everyone else when conditions are not favor-able. Dhariya is a symbol of ultimate dedication towards his work. And thereare many others, who have helped me at every step of my life. It is indeed myprivilege to know all these wonderful f riends.

Q2: You are from Mathematics department in IIT - D; where do you thinkcommunication is necessary for a mathematician?Actually I am a living proof that communication is necessary for a mathemati-cian. These days, it may be nay field or Job, You got to convey your ideas inthe best possible manner hence, you need good communication skills. If youridea is good, but you are not able to convey it properly than its no use.For me personally, they are important as I feel more confident about myself ingeneral. Also if u are fun, interesting and can speak well to people, you tend to

diffuse early in a group and make more friends. So that way these are impor-tant to everyone

Q3: Where can Toastmaster help you and what do you want to attain fromyour Toastmasters experience?Toastmasters helps me in a number of ways. First being:

    1) It makes me feel positive aboutme being a very good speaker someday.2) The variety of people I meet inevery meeting, all different ages, diffbackground and diff aspirations isanother thing3) Of course in every meeting, Ilearn a lot about the correct usage ofEnglish language and Do's andDont's of being a good speaker

Q4: Any suggestion for the fellow

members or comment about anysection in the Toastmasters meet-ing?

I have just started and I like every fellow member here. For the club, meeting are weAll the three sections are nice and has something for everybody. At this time, I don't suggestions on changing the structure or Format of the meeting.

and the Hyde Park police has had a history of being offended very rarely even on sensitive issues. As a salutation to the freedom of expression, we bring Hyde Park

A role that we could introduce at the end of the meeting could that be of the Hark-master. I have seen this role played in a number of meetings included a club

meeting I recently attended in Vancouver. This is a great tool to help improve thelistening skills of the club members and ensures that everyone pays attention. The Harkmaster makes notes all through the meeting of different things said byanyone who takes the floor to speak. At the end of the meeting the Harkmasterasks question such as "who said .. .?" or "why did Aneesh start playing the gui-tar?" etc. The members who wish to answer should put up their hands and berecognised and are not supposed to just shout out the answer. To make it com-petitive, we can present a certificate to the best listener for answering most ques-tions correctly.

Another innovation could be a vote for best anchor of the meeting - members pickfrom Toastmaster, TT Master and GE. We could also consider introducing a cer-tificate for the best supplementary evaluator. This would need time requirementsto be framed for supplementary reports specifying perhaps only the maximum

    Deepak Menon

I suggest we introduce a new section in our Toastmasters meeting the perspe

TMs need to pair up; the pairs are announced by our Toastmaster of the day.

are placed on the table Initiator and follower. The Initiator gets to offer perspa topic of his/her choice anything in general such as traffic, mobiles, a popula

book (all Toast masters rules apply) for a duration such that the follower beco

fortable with it. The follower can then choose to provide a perspective for or a

initiators views. The time allocated to the initiator is 1- 3 minutes and total time

to the pair is 4 minutes.

This exercise takes care of two things. First, it has an element of preparation

the initiator can talk about anything s/he is comfortable with. Secondly, unlike

ics, the follower gets to hear a good explanation about the topic and also tim

about it before s/he gives out a perspective. Both have to compete for air tim

tent and provide as many perspectives as possible. Feel free to make sugge

am completely open if you wish to improvise on the idea.

    Sumit D

Toastmaster meeting is a great learning opportunity where we learnfrom each other. Besides that there are numerous resources(speechesfrom TED, movies, famous personalities, advertisements)on internet from which we can learn how ideas are presented. I be-lieve these could be used as another learning tool.

We could have a new section Learning from Videos (or some better

name), which will happen once a month. We need to have allotted atleast 3045 minutes for it, so that we can see and discuss 2-3speeches. We need to arrange for projector, Laptop and Speakers forthat. I have a good collection of videos, which I would like use for afirst 2-3 trial sessions.

It can work like this: each week, one of the members presents a review of the book he/she may have completed reading in the recentpast. Time limit for presenting the book review can be 5-7 minutes and the speaker can be free tochoose the manner in which he wants to present (simple speech, props, slides etc.). The advantageswill be: 1) it will promote the habit of book-reading among club members, thereby helping the mem-bers in their speeches as well as table-topics; and 2) it will help other members to pick up a book onthe basis of a review presented by someone (it is always easier to choose a book which has beenread and appreciated by someone else rather than picking books randomly).

In fact, I have another idea. If introducing a new section is not possible, then let's have one meetingevery month in which one of the speeches needs to be a book review. This way, members will alsobe able to contribute to their CC goals by presenting a book review. Like "killing two birds with onestone". I had presented a book review as one of my speeches and it was good fun. I am sure otherswill enjoy it as well.

There are some existing things i will like to change1) speech slot allocation rather than volunteering for speech to get a good mixof speeches and speakers on a day2) audience need to respond and give written feedback to the speakers. I feelmost people dont do this3) sometimes the attention of audience is not there on the speaker and it canmake his life tougherSome new things i will like to see1) video recording2) i also support vikas's idea of sharing a 5 min video and then discussing it3) we shall have new member interviews in the meeting rather than the news-letter, its much more interactive and receptive
