Dear readers,

Because together is better, JCI Quatre-Bornes never failed in believing in the ‘Power of ‘We’.

As 2014 winds down, we have learned further about people running into our paths for a reason, and if we look for ways to learn and grow altogether…then we all end up as winners!!!

Here are we heading nearly into 2015, and hopefully to a future full of promises and achievements!!!

Our heartiest thanks to JCI Mauritius and to all its local chapters/members, whose continued support allows JCI Quatre-Bornes to function and expand.

On this ending note, I take the opportunity to thank to my editorial team for their hard working spirit this year round :), being a tremendous pleasure working with them all.

Wishing you all readers a good festive season!!! Stay tuned…

2014 Local President

The Power of WE

“WE”… one word, but ohh so important… because it regroups many, irrespective of age, caste, creed, religion into one unit, with one thinking process, and often with a single objective.

When I was approached to take the leap and leave JCI Curepipe and join JCI Quatre Bornes and be its Local President for 2014, the first reaction was one of honour.. then came the realization that the task ahead was a mountainous one, as the chapter had, apparently gone through troughs of poor administration in the previous year. Alongside came the realization that it had an ageing membership list whose turnover was long overdue… A tedious task, which, when seen with hindsight, could not have been done by any single person, however well-intentioned and prepared. Hence the concept of “The Power of WE”.

JCI Quatre Bornes needed a motto which would get all its existing members together… One which would represent togetherness and one which could denote unity… “The Power of WE” gave me courage to think that the task ahead was one which is being shouldered by not one, but a group of people, the first ones being the Local Board and the Comité des Sages comprising Senators. And then the work began…

2014 had been a year of intense rebuilding in JCI Quatre Bornes… Many were removed from the members’ list for non-payment of dues, others were purged from the members’ list for bad attitude and inability to respect the synergy of the organization. But it did not stop there. A new constitution was voted in, which reflected better the reality of the Organisation, especially in terms of the Local Board’s composition. Another aspect of the rebuilding was the creation of a recruitment strategy. Getting rid of some was fine only as long as they were being replaced by much more dynamic and willing members and aspiring members. A special thank you here to the 2014 Local Board members in their relentless effort to find potential aspiring members and in inviting them to the organization.

The “Power of WE” eventually prevailed throughout the year… WE organized a great Savinia event, WE participated in the JCI Mauritius National Debate Competition, WE participated (and won) the JCI Mauritius National Public Speaking Competition, WE celebrated individuals and promoted their development by organizing a training on professional photography, WE organized a national amateur photography competition which had a very wide impact, WE organized a successful JCI Mauritius 2014 National Convention… Not bad for an organization which, in December 2013 was more than a leg in a coffin, isn’t it?

WE have now set the ball rolling for a better future. New administration framework is on, adequate finance has been secured, and WE can now only look forward to 2015 and its Leaders to bring JCI Quatre Bornes back to moments of glory.

The Power of WE… a reason to show that together positive changes can be achieved.

Behind the Power of WE

Page 7: Jci qb e newsletter issue 3

JCI has been steadily working on bringing positive change to communities.

Change that matters is the type of change which is meaningful and embraced by people going through the change. It is about leading a type of change which can be sustained over time.

Sadly, often enough, people who are at the heart of change, are not involved enough and do not feel like it matters to them. We hear of people undergoing change regularly talking of it as an external event, as something which matters little to them.

Therefore leading change that matters is about making it matter to those people living the change.

The JCI Active Citizen Framework seeks to ensure this by having any project starts with a needs analysis done through a consultative approach so that change which is needed is identified by people in need themselves.

We should therefore be diligent in getting this essential step right in any project we embark on.

My induction course was a rather nice experience. At first, when walking through the doors of JCI as an aspiring member, I was feeling slightly nervous as I didn’t know what to expect but excited nonetheless. It’s a feeling that most of us had. Luckily, I recognized a few faces in the room as almost all aspiring members are there. I instantly felt at ease in the same ‘newbie’ boat as the others. It was a great opportunity to get to know all the other aspiring members.

Part of the induction includes various topics varying from different sections within the JCI. We were encouraged to share our experiences and ideas on certain topics related to JCI and its community service. As I had expected, there’s work to be done both independently and within the groups to keep me on my toes for the years to come. Some lessons are common sense and you will have heard before, but it truly is an important part of the course because at the end of the day, we are in one of the most challenging non-profit international non-governmental organization.

I got to know the new members a lot more. Friendships have been made with people I had hardly spoken to before. I know what to expect and what is expected from me as from now. The Induction prepares us for more exciting experiences in the coming days, months and years in JCI.

I’m expecting to contribute as much as possible in JCI and really get my teeth into it and at the same time, meet a whole new group of people and enjoying each and every moment. Overall, the induction programme helped me feel not only confident about taking on my role as a member of JCI but also comfortable with the people I would be working with. JCI has a great culture and I cannot wait to kick-start working with them.

JCI member Thaleena.

After being an aspiring member for a few months, I finally swore-in as a JCI Quatre Bornes Member on the 6th of September 2014 – on the same day as the 2014 JCI Mauritius CYEA Awards Night at Voila Hotel, Bagatelle.

Dressed in formal attire, I reached the venue. I was seated among the then ‘to-be Jaycees’. After the JCI Creed and JCI Vision and Mission and speeches, the aspiring members from the individual Chap-ters were called one by one. When I heard my name, I was all excited and nervous at the same time, for I had to face the audience which I seldom do!

After reciting the JCI Oath with the other aspiring members from JCI QuatreBornes –with the help of 2014 Local President Quatre-Bornes Kiran and 2014 Local President Curepipe Veenandi – we received our pins from Senator Godere and 2014 National President Prashant, I could not figure out the reason why Jaycees wore this small pin with so much pride…until I got mine :)

The Swearing-In Ceremony is just the first step towards a prosperous JCI career which I am looking forward to have.

JCI member Vrinda.

JCI Quatre-Bornes Amateur Photography Compe on

The Junior Chamber International of Quatre Bornes (JCI Quatre Bornes) has launched few months back the Online Photography

Fiesta Competition namely the ‘JCI Quatre Bornes’ Amateur Photography Competition, targeting young people across the

island, whereby the theme was “Fascinating Mauritius”.

The aim of this photography competition was to promote individual development of young citizens by giving them a platform to

show their photography skills through portraying Mauritius and its people. The project also aims at promoting JCI principles of

active citizenship by fostering development opportunities for its members and the community alike.

As quoted by Ansel Adams, a great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being

photographed; this has been fully demonstrated through the photo entries received in the competition.

A fascinating Mauritius decrypted through its marvellous landscape, its luscious beaches, and buildings - each photo captured by the

amateur photographers. Creativity, imagination and originality have been unleashed and revealed. The purpose set for this

competition has been fully achieved.

The panel of jury members comprising of Mr Samuel Appadoo, Mr Pat Veerasawmy and Mr Roy Suraj, all professionals in the

photography field, have scrutinised and marked each and every photo received by the participants as per the criteria set, where best

three photos as per jury marking were designated.

The second phase of the competition, basically the ‘Facebook contest’ has allowed the public to like their favourite photos. The

authors of the first three photos with the maximum number of likes have been selected.

The Prize Giving Ceremony was held on 29 October 2014 at the Ratatouille Restaurant, Ebene. The members of the JCI family, the

jury panel, winners and participants in the competition have been united to congratulate the winners of the Amateurs Photography

Competition. All the photos entries were exposed to the members present and on each and everyone’s lips only one word could be

read, “Fascinating”.

The salient and proud moment of the event was when participant and winners present came forward everyone present to explain

with great pride how they have captured their photos and shared with us some of the key photography techniques they had used as

well.

Teamwork, dedication, hardwork, patience and willingness to make this project a sheer success have been shown by the team

members namely local secretary Dana, Ismael, vice president Jhateen, Vrinda, Rajneesh and local president Kiran Bhujun. The dream

team had showed a blend of new members’ willingness and dedication to achieve together with the experience and guidance of

senior members. The “Power of We” established once again.

It gives me great pride to have been part of this project as project director, proud to have worked with dedicated members and proud

of the big success of this competition. Many experiences have been gained through this whole project and the journey to be a jaycee

in its true sense has just begun. A Hearty Congratulations to All Winners, continue clicking and showing the best part of the world

through your camera and originality.
