JAZZ EM AGOSTO 2013 / 2 – 11 AUGUST / LISBON 01
Jazz em Agosto festival is celebrating its 30th edition in 2013 with a 10-concert series that will take place between August 2nd to 11th on the festival’s main stage, the Open-Air Amphitheatre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In addition, nine film and documentary sessions will be screened at the Foundation’s CAM - Centro de Arte Moderna in the Multipurpose Room.
The programme for the 30th edition, reflecting the identity that has come to embody this festival, includes musicians that Jazz em Agosto’s public will be familiar with, musicians whose approach has been defined by an on-going and restless search for new musical paths and aesthetics and who, this year, will be playing with new projects and in new line-ups.
John Zorn will be one of the most notable presences – the artist turns 60 this year, and is celebrating with a large European tour that Jazz em Agosto is thrilled to be associated with.
The programme also features an additional concert, with free admission, taking place on July 25th
and also held in the Open-Air Amphitheatre, to mark another event: the 30th anniversary of the CAM, where Jazz em Agosto emerged as part of the ACARTE program. This concert will feature Maria João’s new OGRE project, drawing parallels with the 1st Jazz em Agosto festival, in 1984, when the opening concert was precisely the Maria João Quintet.
As part of this 30th edition of Jazz em Agosto, we are also publishing a book of essays written by the jazz critics and thinkers Stuart Broomer, Bill Shoemaker and Brian Morton, who were invited to do so by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The book, which will be published in English and in Portuguese, aims to shed light on the lives of 50 of the musicians and groups who, over the past three decades, have helped shape the festival’s identity and are already part of contemporary jazz history; the essays will be complemented by a selected discography.
JAZZ EM AGOSTO 2013 / 2 – 11 AUGUST / LISBON 02
Jazz em Agosto 2013 begins by focusing on John Zorn, one of America’s most prolific musicians, who turns 60 this year and whose birthday the festival is proud to share.
The three projects that the composer and saxophone player is set to play will feature key musicians from throughout his career: Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn, Kenny Wollesen, Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista and Ikue Mori.
- The Dreamers is a project that revives the conceptualism of John Zorn’s 2001 album, The Gift, lounge music evoking 1950s easy-listening, with hints of a blend of South American and Jewish music.
- Essential Cinema, cinema with a live soundtrack, a songwriting project for underground filmmakers, heavily included in the Filmworks series by Zorn’s label, Tzadik, where he releases his works merging cinema and music. It includes the screening of films by Maya Deren, Joseph Cornell, Harry Smith and Wallace Berman.
- Electric Masada will wrap up the focus on John Zorn. It is the electric version of Zorn’s core group, Masada Quartet, formed in 1994, drawing on influences from Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis and from John Zorn’s traditional Jewish musical roots.
- Drumming GP plays Max Roach M’Boom is the concert by the Portuguese percussion group, hailing from Oporto and founded by Miquel Bernat, who have developed a remarkable body of work in contemporary music. The show will call on resident Brazilian drummer, Alexandre Frazão, to recreate the M’Boom percussion ensemble of Max Roach who, during the 1980s, explored non-western percussion textures.
- Elephant9 featuring Reine Fiske, a Norwegian electric jazz group consisting of Ståle Størlokken, Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen, Torstein Lofhus and Reine Fiske: A Scandinavian jazz ensemble known for its surprising and ever-shifting sound heavily featuring the Hammond B-3 organ.
- The Thing, a trio consisting of Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Paal Nilssen-Love, needs no introduction. After their performance at Jazz em Agosto 2004, they return this year with The Thing XXL, an extended ensemble that brings fresh twists to the music of the renowned free jazz group, with Mats Åleklint, Terrie Ex, Jim Baker and Peter Evans.
- As well as taking part in The Thing XXL, Peter Evans will be debuting his new group, Peter Evans Octet, around Europe – an extended version of his recent quintet that includes, among others, Sam Pluta on electronics and Jim Black on drums. Peter Evans is one of modern music’s most acclaimed trumpet players.
JAZZ EM AGOSTO 2013 / 2 – 11 AUGUST / LISBON 03
- Composer and saxophone player Anthony Braxton presents Falling River Music Quartet, featuring new chamber music that is the result of a number of new compositions began in 2005, intersecting musical pieces with hints of painting, transforming his musical system and making it more lyrical and spatial. The band includes names well-known to the festival’s audience, such as Mary Halvorson, Ingrid Laubrock and Taylor Ho Bynum.
- Mary Halvorson Quintet will also be making its national debut, mirroring her international acclaim as a guitarist. A disciple of Anthony Braxton, Halvorson brings along a quintet of musicians, Jonathan Finalyson, Jon Irabagon, John Hébert and Ches Smith, exploring rock and roll’s turbulence with jazz’s fervour.
- The 30th edition of Jazz em Agosto will culminate with a performance by Pharoah Sanders, the charismatic saxophone player who collaborated with some of the biggest names in jazz, such as Sun Ra, Don Cherry and, especially, John Coltrane. Pharoah & The Underground is a project dreamed up by Rob Mazurek which unites his trios, São Paulo Underground and Chicago Underground.
The programme will also include the screening of nine films at the Multipurpose Room of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s CAM - Centro de Arte Moderna, scheduled at 6:30pm to precede the Open-Air Amphitheatre concerts:
- John Zorn Cycle: Treatment for a film in fifteen scenes, a summary of four films produced by John Zorn whose starting point is a script written by the musician/author; it was shown at the New York Film Festival 2011;
- aTensãoJAZZ (2011), a documentary series on one possible history of jazz in Portugal, created by Rui Neves and directed by Paulo Seabra, is to be shown in full, two episodes a day, from Sunday to Friday;
- WORLD SAXOPHONE QUARTET concert at Jazz em Agosto 1987 (RTP Archive);
- SUN RA ARKESTRA concert at Jazz em Agosto 1985 (RTP Archive);
