~Japanese New Year’s Decorations~ To celebrate and decorate the New Year, let us introduce
some Japanese traditional decorations.
★Kadomatsu: A pair of pine decorations placed in front of
the gates of a house or building, consisting of pine and
bamboo branches which are considered auspicious in Japan.
★Kagamimochi: A decoration of two Mochi, round and flat rice cake,
in which a smaller one is placed on top of a larger one.
Two Mochi is said to represent the sun and moon and
symbolizes happy longevity. After the New Year holiday,
on January 11, depending on the region on January 15,
we split the Mochi into small pieces and cook with Oshiruko,
or stewed sweetened red beans, or with Zoni, a flavored soup with such
ingredients as vegetables and seaweeds. We call the occasion
“Kagami-biraki”. A Happy New Year 2019 from ICIEF BOARD staff!
